Horns and Halos
Horns and Halos Horns and Halos is a fascinating, unexpectedly tragic story about one man's downfall in the brutal world of perception-driven media and politics. In the late 1990s, author James Hatfield wrote Fortunate Son, a biography of then-candidate George W. Bush that alleged, among other things, that the future president used cocaine during the '70s. St. Martin's Press fast-tracked the project, but recalled the book when Hatfield's earlier prison time for murder conspiracy became known. Horns and Halos follows what happened next: Fortunate Son was picked up by tiny Soft Skull Press, run by a passionate, Mohawk-topped young man named Sander Hicks, but the long, uphill battle to restore credibility to the work proves ruinous. The film is notable for access to the anxiety and roller-coaster emotions of Hatfield and Hicks, and there's plenty more despair in deleted scenes offered on this two-DVD set. Special features are especially important and useful here for added context, including raw footage of protests at Bush's inauguration, performances by Hicks and his band White Collar Crime, a profile of the film created by public television's KCET, and much else. --Tom Keogh

Open Question: Question about editing certificate?
I graduated from college about one full year ago, and despite landing many job interviews for entry-level editorial jobs I have not yet gotten a job. Right now I'm interning with a literary magazine and am going to enter the University of Chicago editing certificate program. My question is this: Does anyone know if an editing certificate program is helpful for landing jobs? I'm just not sure if the job outlook for editing/publishing jobs is so bad that maybe I should start training for a technical career of some sort. I'm putting a lot of hopes that I can get great training/a career network through this editing certification, but I'm just wondering if anyone here is really in-the-know about whether editing careers are even feasible right now. Thanks for any help you could give me! (more...)

Open Question: Is there a literary agent out there willing to take on a new author of fantasy?
I have five completed novels, the 6th nearly 80% finished, and I just need someone to help me get a foot in the door of the literary world. I'm looking for perhaps a new literary agent or someone in the publishing business who has a strong interest in fantasy and is willing to give a new author a chance. Please no stupid or mean answers, I'm completely serious and it's not nice to insult people's dreams. (more...)

Open Question: Are my extra curricular activities adequate for a good college with my GPA?
I'm currently a Junior and plan to apply to colleges such as University of Chicago, Emory, Duke, and Wake Forest. My GPA is low (3.67 unweighted, 4.5 weighted), so I'll probably have to rely on extra curriculars, etc. a little more. Please let me know your honest opinion; if it seems inadequate, I'll still have some time to improve. Thanks! ~ 4 years of policy debate-- first in the district in 2008, National tournament qualified (competed in Las Vegas), Quarter finalist and octafinalist at 2 national tournaments, First place at the Samford Institute tournament, several speaker awards ~ In 2008, I single handedly founded an international literary and art magazine which has published works from people from all across the US, Sweden, Canada, etc. It has received around 10,000 readers. I'm also currently the editor-in-chief. I've also designed and maintained the website for the magazine. ~ In late 2008/ 2009, single handedly founded an online organization that encourages people of all ages to engage in hobbies that will make their lives more meaningful. It has members who's shared their success stories from all across the U.S. I've designed and maintained the website for the organization. ~ 10 poems/photography published in 8 international literary and art magazines. Each have about a 20% acceptance rate. ~ Established website where I sell my photography, and have had pretty good income in place of a job. ~ Co-president of the AI club in our high school for 3 years. During my co-president years, the club has won the "best interest club" award from our high school. ~ I helped establish another club in our school during Sophomore and Junior year. I'm currently the co-vice president of that club, and it has more than 100 members. ~ Piano for 6 years-- state champion in 2007, honorable mention in state in 2008, district winner for 3 years (fresh-junior), winner of sonata competition in 2007, consistently invited to play in private recitals, etc. ~ I've volunteered at a selective Science center, the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America. I have over 500 hours of community service. ~ I've worked in a lab at a state university over the summer. ~ I've attended 2 national debate institutes over the summer I'm sorry that was so long. I've just never shown anyone my extra curriculars, so I'm a bit insecure about them. Please let me know if it's very unique, mediocre, or poor. Thanks! (more...)

Open Question: What does a Literary Agent do exactly?
My Editor has advised me to contact two Agents he used to work with but I want to know what a Literary Agent does? I know they contact the publishers for you, but how do they do it? Just through email or post or do they actually go and speak to them? What happens if after two or so years, the Agent cannot find a publisher, what happens then? If one Agent offers to help me publish my book, would there be a contract to sign? This is the first time I've tried to publish anything so I don't know that much about it. Thanks for the help. Voting Question: Is it impossible to publish your writing?
Okay, so I'm working on a book. I know about literary agents, and I know that it's hard to publish a book. But from what I've been reading, it sounds near impossible. I'm nervous, and I don't want to be turned down. Is it really hard to publish a book? And is it true that out of all the writers who attempt to publish their writing, only 2% make it? If you want, I can send you a sample of my writing to see my chances. :/ (more...)
