Hours rawhide

KONG ORIGINAL
KONG ORIGINAL Original Kong Black, Large. The 1st Kong made was black because the absence of dye leaves this chew toy the most durable of all chew toys. The design was developed to remove and prevent tarter build-up and produce a gum workout while giving that large dog many hours of fun. Made of tough, natural rubber, its durability is only exceeded by the tactile satisfaction offered by the substantial flex of this hollow dog toy. There have been many copies, but this product is truly one of a kind for the pet professional.

Open Question: Do you leave your dog inside when you're gone? What can I do for my bored dog?
I have a puppy- still a pup I think- 9 months old. She's a chihuahua/cocker spaniel mix we think. I am a teacher and am gone for about 4.5 hours, come home for a long lunch because of my prep, and am gone again for about 2 hours. I have a large pen (two exercise pens together) for her outside including her crate and toys. No matter what toys I leave for her, she doesn't play with them. She loves rawhide, but will only eat them in a person's presence. Other than that, she just sits in her crate waiting. I have thought about letting her stay in the house while I'm gone, but knowing her she'd poop and pee everywhere out of fear or boredom, or chew up everything. Yes, she's completely potty trained, but it's still a fear? If your dog stays inside all day, how did you train them NOT to get in to anything? Also, what can I do with toys for her? She likes treats in her Kong, but won't touch it unless I can see her. (more...)

Resolved Question: Remedies for separation anxiety...with destruction?
About 3 weeks ago I rescued a Siberian Husky from the LA shelter. He had multiple bite marks all over his body. A torn ear and most just fur and bones. We've worked through most of his issues except for the separation anxiety, which seems very severe. He's broken out of his crate and is now only in a wire crate. Even from the wire crate he is destructive. I put the crate by the window but he has managed to get his teeth on anything nearby to destroy. This morning he kept rocking the HUGE crate back and forth, smashing the DVD player and almost knocking the TV down. He doesn't mind the crate so long as I'm in the room, but if I go upstaies he'll start howling and crying. It sounds like he's being murdered. I don't acknowledge him until he calms down, but sometimes that can be awhile. I put the radio on. Brought a "Dog Sitter DVD for him to watch. Put compressed rawhide, treats, toys in the crate. He'll pee and poo on everything in his crate. I have another husky and a cat, but he just wants to be around me. I exercise him anywhere between 1 1/2 - 4 hours a day. I've purchased one of those comfort mist that's suppose to mimick the scent of their mom. Not sure how to help him and I'll also admit I'm losing patience. There's not a day that goes by that I haven't had to clean up after him. He's a good dog except for this separation anxiety thing. Any suggestions out there on what I can do to help him? I have tried leaving him alone free to roam the house. Not only did he break into the cupboards and eat all the food...human, dog, and cat, he peed and pooped everywhere, even though he knows how to use the doggie door. The house was completely trashed. He's fine in the crate as long as I'm in the room. Thanks for all the suggestions. I used a combination of them...going away and coming back, blanket over the crate, and some Rescue Remedy. The blanket over the crate worked the best. Thanks again everyone! (more...)

Resolved Question: Dog ate rawhide and now is sick.?
Over the past 4 days my dog has devoured a HUGE rawhide bone. I had no idea until now that there could be terrible side effects of this. Unfortunately for me and my dog, he has began to throw up. It started around midnite and has gone on every 45 mins or so for the past 6 hours. After doing some research I learned that he could have an intestinal blockage, however when I took him outside at 2:30 and 5:30, he was able to poop with no problem. His stool is soft but not runny or pudding like. He ate some grass, came in and threw up again. Other than the throwing up he seems fine, maybe a little tired. He is refusing his water and food however. I'm wondering should I rush him to the vet or just treat it as an upset stomach and give it until this evening or tomorrow morning before taking him? Any advice??? ***Sometimes I have the tendency to over react to situations and I don't want to rush him to the vet to find out it is nothing really, that is why I am asking should I wait.*** I took him to the vet at 8:00AM. The vet said it was too early to tell if there was an obstruction, given that he was able to go poop without a problem. He did however give him some anti-nausea meds and told me to monitor him until the morning. If he seems to not be drinking water or going poop anymore I have to bring him back in in the AM. Thank you all for the great advice! (more...)

Resolved Question: my otherwise healthy pomeranian just started having?
bloody jelly like diarrhea. She doesn't seem to be bothered by it at the moment. I plan on taking her to the vet's in the morning because we live in a small town and there are no 24 hour vet clinics, and the roads are impassible due to ice. Is there anyone who knows what might have caused this, and if there is anything I can do to make her more comfortable until morning. We did give her a rawhide pigs ear yesterday. (more...)

Voting Question: What is it about raw hide products?
Why do most people endorse the use of rawhide products because my dog becomes obsessive about them! Unfortunately she will spend hours without eating or sleeping or going outside. Even tempting her with things she loves doesn't make a difference. This WILL be the last time she'll receive any. What causes this type of behavior? Why is she so hostile? It's only the raw hides! How do I deal with this? (more...)

Resolved Question: How can I stop my puppy from biting and jumping?
I rescued a puppy (german shepherd/ rotti mix) who is about 8 weeks, he was a stray, so no telling how much time he had with is litter. He has a severe biting and nipping problem. I have tried yelping high pitched, if you watch Cesar.....I have tried the shhht and making my hand a mouth and "biting" his rear end, even laying him down on his side and back to see if he will submit (he doesn't calm down even after 30 minutes), I also tried grabbing the back of his neck and pulling him away. Nothing is working. We go on two thirty minute walks a day and he does great, walks on my right side, slighty behind me. When we get back he is exhausted for about two hours then starts up again. He gets tired of his rawhides and we play fetch until he gets bored of that too. I have taught him sit, down, and targeting (touching his nose to my hand or a post-it), fully house-broke him, and trained him to sleep quietly in a crate all night; he has picked up all of those with ease in the past 10 days. PLEASE help, I love my puppy, but this chewing and biting has got to stop. I know he is intelligent, but ignores me when I try to correct the biting. (more...)

Resolved Question: Do you let your dog roam free in the house when you're out?
I tether my dog up next to her bed when I go out and give her a rawhide bone. I'm only out for about 2-3 hours at a time. If I let her be "free range" she'd get into the trash, eat things, tear up whatever she can find... and pee. Will she outgrow this, or is crating/tethering your dog standard procedure? I've only had her 1 month so we're working on manners and proper behavior. I'm hoping to have her trained to be good unsupervised she's about 2 years old but I got her from the pound so it appears she's had no training (more...)

Resolved Question: Are the pressed rawhide bones healthy for dogs?
My 7 month old.. 90 lbs Bullmastiff puppy loves to eat these bones. She can eat an entire eight inch bone in about one hour. How often should we allow her to eat these? We have been giving her them every few days.. Thanks! (more...)

Voting Question: Help! My puppy Nips, and then Pees indoors!?
My puppy is now 14 weeks old. He is a good natured Lab/Golden mix. The only problem I am having, is he won't stop nipping at me! If I am walking from room to room, he will follow me nipping at my heels. I stop, turn my back to him, firmly say no, wait for him to stop, and then move on, and my very next step will be followed by another bite. If I am sitting at my desk, he will bite me, and cause mischief in general - I know he just wants to play, but often I will have spent the last 2 hours walking and playing tug of war, or throwing a ball for him, and then he will still do this. I have tried ignoring him when he bites me, but when I ignore him, he pees on my carpet! He has plenty of toys and rawhides, and I will often put them in one big pile on the floor for him to play with, but he loses interest in them quickly, unless I am directly interacting with him. There is no where safe I can lock him up other than his crate, but I do not want to use his crate as a punishment. Unfortunately, I have had no choice but to lock him in his crate several times now. He is really starting to get on my nerves, any advice?! Thanks! Thanks for the advice! I didnt know that dogs could smell hormones, thats really interesting. I should of been a bit more clear about the ignoring and peeing cycle. It is not immediately after I ignore him that he pees. Typically he will look confused for 15 seconds or so, run out of the room, play somewhere else, come back, look confused again, and then pees on my carpet. All in all its about 2 or 3 minutes after I start to ignore him. I assumed he does it for attention. Another example is if I take a shower in the morning, and instead of leaving him in his crate, I let him roam around my room, he will poop by the time I get back, even if I had taken him outside before getting in the shower (I have since started putting him back in his crate while Im in the shower) Hoping for some more wonderful advice :) Thanks!
