For his third collaboration with director Sam Mendes (after American Beauty and The Shawshank Redemption), composer Thomas Newman has come up with one of his finest scores. The music mixes modern atmospheric quasi-rock touches with Middle Eastern influences (with particularly great success on the tracks "Welcome to the Suck" and "Zoomies."). The latter manifest themselves in both the beats and the instrumentation--the credits include soloists on exotic instruments such as the bowed cumbus (a type of banjo-like lute) and the processed xaphoons (a sax made of bamboo). All the more jarring, then, when the CD's handful of songs pop up. (It's quite a jolt to hear Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry Be Happy" after four eerie instrumental tracks.) The other song picks are obvious but well chosen: T-Rex's "Bang a Gong (Get It On)," "Naughty by Nature's "O.P.P.," Public Enemy's "Fight the Power," and Tom Waits's "Soldier's Things." Still, it's Newman's work that propels this CD, not the pick-up songs. Surprisingly, Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries," which figures in one of the movie's most memorable scenes (when soldiers watch Apocalypse Now), isn't included here. --Elisabeth VincentelliAudio CD: Explicit Lyrics, Soundtrack

Sid and Marty Krofft created many wildly creative series for Saturday morning television. One of the most memorable was Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, the story of a sea creature, Sigmund, who runs away from his family's cave by the ocean and is adopted by two human children. This DVD from Kid Rhino showcases the first 4 of 29 episodes that originally ran from 1973 to 1975, and gave us quite interesting characters like Sigmund, Big Mama, and Sheldon the Sea Genie (played by comedian Rip Taylor). The shows are chock full of pop culture references from the time period, and feature many familiar voices behind the monsters. Although the plot rarely changes (the kids must keep Sigmund hidden from the other humans around them, despite the trouble that he causes), they are all enjoyable to watch. Each episode concludes with a song written by the team of Boyce and Hart (responsible for many of the Monkees' early hits) and sung by star Johnnie Whitaker (Jody on Family Affair). Of course, the theme song, "Friends," is widely remembered and as hummable as it ever was. The foam rubber and goggle-eyed monsters are far from scary, but do provide a glimpse into the past, when high-tech special effects weren't necessary to create fantasy worlds. The show revels in its simplicity, and it appears as if the actors had as much fun making the series as we do watching it. --Zachary LivelyDirector: Dick Darley, Murray Golden

A good wizard finds his magical powers diminishing as this Rankin/Bass production based on the Peter Dickinson novel opens. His nemesis, the evil Ommadon (voiced by James Earl Jones at his deepest and scariest), swiftly takes advantage of the situation. Who will save the world? Why, none other than a young scientist-novelist-game inventor, named Peter Dickenson (mildly voiced by John Ritter), who is zapped from the future back into the time of dragons. Populating this Japanese-animation fantasy film are the titular fire-breathing dragons, the wizards, a knight, a maiden, some elves, and--in a feminist departure from tradition--a heroic bowwoman. The battles are fairly mild and most of the virtuous characters recover, making this a good choice for family viewing, as well as a staple for the fantasy fanatic's video library. --Kimberly HeinrichsDirector: Arthur Rankin Jr., Jules Bass

The title episode features the band of strange-haired 9-year-olds from the Nickelodeon series sorting out the familiar giving-versus-greed debate of Christmas. Consumer-minded Helga searches for the perfect present to impress Arnold while he searches for the lost daughter of his friend, Southeast Asian immigrant Mr. Hyunh. Helga gets some "really boss" snow boots as an early gift, while Arnold strikes a deal with a government official who will search for the daughter if Arnold can find a pair of... you guessed it--snow boots. This double episode crams a lot of goodwill and redemption into its brief 26 minutes. Also included is a bonus 11-minute episode, "Snow Day," which features a dutiful Arnold helping out his landlord grandfather while his friends frolic in the snow. Will Arnold get a chance to have fun before the snow melts? Just leave it to Grandpa. The themes are aimed at grade-schoolers, but preschoolers will enjoy watching animated big kids in action. --Kimberly HeinrichsDirector: Craig Bartlett, Cullen Blaine, Larry Leichliter, Steve Socki

If you're a ten-year-old girl, this sequel to Disney's 2001 hit will completely transfix you. How could it not? Bubbly Mia (Anne Hathaway), the American teenager who in the first film learned she was actually European royalty, finishes college and--whoosh!--heads off to Genovia, where he's given a closet full of fabulous clothes and jewelry in preparation to rule the kingdom under the tutelage of grandmother Julie Andrews. Throw in a horse and a volatile but innocent romantic attraction to the dreamy young stud (Chris Pine) who's also vying for the throne, and you have the kind of stuff that prepubescent girls rhapsodize about at slumber parties. Oh--and there's a slumber party here, too, featuring a bevy of cute, international young princesses mattress-surfing down a giant slide. Resistance is futile. For the rest of us, though, director Garry Marshall has managed to make his Laverne & Shirley days seem positively Shakespearean in comparison. The movie is precious, padded (two hours!), and pandering twaddle; Andrews, in her role as Queen Mother, is even shoehorned into a faux-hip-hop duet with Disney Channel favorite Raven (one of many, many grueling moments intended to sell the soundtrack). Then the film takes a maddening left turn three-quarters of the way into the plot and decides that, despite all the preceding consumption and connubial fantasies to the contrary, it's really about feminine emancipation. But don't worry--what causes you to smack your forehead in frustration will go right over the heads of its hypnotized target market. --Steve WieckingDirector: Garry Marshall
