Saint Catherine's Monastery, Sinai, Egypt: A Photographic Essay (Metropolitan Museum of Art Publications)
Saint Catherine's Monastery, Sinai, Egypt: A Photographic Essay (Metropolitan Museum of Art Publications) The Holy Monastery of St. Catherine, situated among the mountains of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, is the oldest continuously active monastery in the world. Recorded as a Christian pilgrimage site as early as the fourth century, it is located where Moses is thought to have seen the Burning Bush and to have received the Ten Commandments. In the sixth century the great Byzantine Emperor Justinian provided a handsome church and fortifications for the monastery. Later generations of pilgrims added other gifts; there are still frequent pilgrims there today. In this beautiful and informative book, the isolated Monastery and its buildings are presented in many newly commissioned colour images that include the richly decorated sanctuary of the sixth-century church and the world's most outstanding collection of icons. Along with an introduction by His Eminence Archbishop Damianos and an essay on the Monastery by Helen Evans, the book offers powerful photographs of the site, some of which are provided from the Monastery's archives, with the descriptive captions written by the monks of the Monastery.

Passaconaway's Realm: Captain John Evans and the Exploration of Mount Washington
Passaconaway's Realm: Captain John Evans and the Exploration of Mount Washington Now that New Hampshire's dominant White Mountain peak can be climbed relatively easily in a long day, or more comfortably ascended by car or cog railway, it is easy to forget that it was once considered by Native Americans and most European settlers to be too sacred and formidable to attempt. In fact, mountain climbing was relatively rare until recent times, making the fifteen ascents of Mount Washington between 1632 and 1804 all the more remarkable. Passaconaway's Realm is a concise, historically and scientifically correct, and very dramatic story of Mount Washington's earliest climbs and the men who made them in pursuit of botanical specimens; meteorologic, geographic, and geological data; and personal adventure.

Incorporating sources that have never been utilized, Russell M. Lawson highlights the interaction of the wilderness landscape and the native peoples with such British-American newcomers and invaders as Walter Neale, Darby Field, John Josselyn, Captain Wells, Robert Rogers, Nicholas Austin, Governor John Wentworth, Jeremy Belknap, and Manasseh Cutler. He focuses on rustic frontiersman Captain John Evans, a founder of Fryeburg, Maine, an axe-man and hunter, but also the wilderness guide for the men of science during the 1784 Belknap-Cutler expedition. Lawson describes in close and intriguing detail the personal relations and aspirations, the logistics and difficulties, and the scientific aspirations and outcomes of this key early ascent.

Resolved Question: Harry Potter Innuendos?
* What d'you mean, I'm not brave in bed?" said Harry, completely nonplussed. * "...I know you did Mark Evans two nights ago --" "He was asking for it," snarled Dudley. *"I heard you last night," said Dudley breathlessly. "Talking in your sleep. Moaning." *"Ah well...wand still in your jeans?" *"JUST BECAUSE YOU'RE ALLOWED TO USE MAGIC NOW YOU DON'T HAVE TO WHIP YOUR WAND OUT FOR EVERY TINY LITTLE THING!" * "You two just Apparated on my knees!" "Yeah, well, it's harder in the dark --" * "There was a groan of bedsprings, and Harry's mattress descended a few inches as George sat down near his feet. "So, got there yet?" said George eagerly. * "...screwing up her eyes each time with the same pained expression she had worn back in Harry's bedroom." * "Ron was lying sprawled on his back with his mouth wide open." * "Quite astonishing, the way you contrive to wriggle out of very tight holes." * "Or any part of your body, really, we're not fussy where we stick this." * "...when it appears, it is always equipped for the seeker's needs. Dobby has used it, sir," said the elf, dropping his voice and looking guilty, "when Winky has been very drunk." * "She's somethin' when she's roused, Olympe...fiery, you know...'spect it's the French in her..." * "He was rather taller than Snape, who, Harry noticed, had balled his fist in the pocket of his cloak over what Harry was sure was the handle of his wand." * "Stand up and take out your wand, Potter." * "I thought not," said Snape, watching him closely. "You let me get in too far. You lost control." * "Manners, Potter," said Snape dangerously. "Now, I want you to close your eyes." Harry threw him a filthy look before doing as he was told. He did not like the idea of standing there with his eyes shut while Snape faced him, carrying a wand. * "He was on all fours again on Snape's office floor." * "Ron wrenched the hangings apart, and Harry stared up at him in the moonlight, as he lay flat on his back." * "Yeah, Montague tried to do us during break," said George. "What do you mean, 'tried'?" said Ron quickly. * "Well, we'll soon find out, won't we?" said Snape smoothly. "Wand out, Potter." Harry moved into his usual position... * "But whether James really did take off Snape's pants, Harry never found out." * "...did things with a wand I've never seen before..." * "Sirius pushed his chair roughly aside and strode around the table towards Snape, whipping his wand out as he went; Snape whipped out his own." * "Snape eyed Harry, tracing his mouth with one long, thin finger as he did so." * "Well?" said Ron finally, looking up at Harry. "How was it?" Harry considered for a moment. "Wet." He said truthfully. * "What did he do to you, Diddy?" Aunt Pentunia said in a quavering voice, now sponging sick from the front of Dudley's leather jacket. "Was it-- was it you-know-what, darling? Did he use-- his thing?" * "He bit hard on his pillow, to stop himself from making a noise." * "Running to Daddy now, are you? Is his ickle boxing champ frightened of nasty Harry's wand?" * Harry snorted. He walked around the room again, looking anywhere but at Ron and Hermione. "So what have you two been doing if you're not allowed in meetings?" he demanded. "You said you'd been busy." * "Say hello to him [Hagrid] for us!" called Hermione, as Harry proceeded down the ward. "And ask him what's happening about...about his little friend!" * "... every part of him screaming for release, Harry felt the creature use him again..." * "Fred and George were looking particularly annoyed; both were bandy-legged and winced with each movement..." * "Don't put your wand there, boy!" roared Moody. * "He came last night, when you were in bed," said Mr. Weasley. * "He let out a long, slow breath and stared up at the brilliant blue sky. Every day this summer had been the same: the tension, the expectation, the temporary relief, and then mounting tension again...and always, growing more insistent all the time, the question of why nothing had happened yet." * "Anyway, its a nightmare of a year, the fifth," said George. "If you care about exam results, anyway. Fred and I managed to keep our peckers up somehow." * "He [Harry] tried to eat, but it was like chewing carpet." * Put that away, will you?" said Sirius finally, as James made a fine catch and Wormtail let out a cheer. "Before Wormtail wets himself from excitement." * "I see," said Uncle Vernon, looking from his white-faced wife to Harry and hitching up his trousers. He seemed to be swelling... * "'Don't kill Cedric! Don't kill Cedric!' Who's Cedric -- your boyfriend?" * "Ha ha ha, Harry, look at it--" said Ron, watching it disgorge its gaudy innards. "Harry, come and touch it, bet it's weird--"..."Harry, look what's happen--no--no, I don't like it--no, stop--stop--" * "Kreacher won't *quite* as * "Kreacher won't *quite* as devoted to him as to my mother, but I still caught him snogging a pair of my father's old trousers last week." * "One more lesson like that and I might just do a Weasley." * "That was me," he said. "I was slashed..." * "...which left Harry free to sit down on the grass between the beech and the bushes and watch the foursome under the tree." * "Kreacher was disappearing through the door to the hall, looking back at them malevolently as he hitched up his loincloth..." * "Harry's heart began to pump very fast indeed. Defence against external penetration?" * ...She pressed hard on the top of his head. "Doesnt it ever lie flat?" she said desperately. Harry shook his head. * "Panting, Harry fell forwards over the hydrangea bush, straightened up and stared around. There were several faces peering trough various nearby windows. Harry stuffed his wand hastily back into his jeans and tried to look innocent." * "He and all the other Wea (more...)

Resolved Question: Greyline Tours in Denver.... worth it?
http://www.grayline.com/Grayline/destinations/us/denver.go I'll be in Denver from Wednesday until Saturday (short trip). I've lived in Florida my whole life, so my wife and I are looking to see some of the spectacular sites in the Denver area. I'm not usually the type to go on a tour, but I figure one of the 9-10 hour tours might be a good way to cram in a bunch of stuff. The Greyline Tours I've been interested in are as such: DENVER MOUNTAIN PARKS - Red Rocks Park - Bear Creek Canyon - Buffalo Bill Cody Gravesite and Museum - Lookout Mountain Duration: 4 hours $40.00 WHISTLES, BELLS AND MOUNTAIN PEAKS - Travel up Mount Evans - Lunch at Echo Lake Lodge - Ride on Georgetown Loop Railroad Duration: 9 hours $95.00 I have no idea what any of these places are.. but they sound cool! lol. I am renting a car while I'm there, so theoretically I could drive myself to some of these places. However, I wouldnt have a tour guide providing historical information. Any insight on this? Thanks! Resolved Question: Harry Potter Fanfiction Tell Me What Ya Think?
I forgot my other yahoo thing & i had posted this so i didnt steal it if you were wondering well here we go anway... All I Ever Wanted Was You Okay, don?t be afraid, you?ll be just fine. Okay now get a firm grip, and push up with your legs. You can?t be afraid. Show no fear?be confident, brave, be bold! Alright ready to try?? A tiny little first year looked up at him?and nodded in awe. He laughed okay, mount your broom?now on the count of three, I?ll be right up there with you. One?Two?.THREE!? Whoosh! And they were up, floating a couple feet above the ground. ?We did it!? cried the little boy. ?You did it. Way to go kid ?Alright, now here?s the fun part?the brooms going to do all the hard work and you get the fun part?think where you want to go, gently lead with your hands and?.wooohooo!? He was off flying circles and loops around the little boy who was gleefully laughing with delight? They had been out there for almost an hour. I couldn?t believe my eyes. The jerk. The ego. The constant annoyance that had been in my life for seven years now was in front of me, only he wasn?t a jerk or an ego?he was sweet, and kind?patient and?amazing. I had had about enough of the birthday merriment upstairs and come outside for some fresh air. I heard voices and wandered over to the Quidditch Pitch, and who did I find? None other than James Potter and tiny Douglas Pine. My first instinct had been, of course, to turn and run, stay away from Potter was a constant voice in my head, but something about the way Douglas was laughing touched me, and I was curious to see more. Earlier that week the first years had had their first flying lesson. Apparently he was scared and the other boys had been teasing ever since. I had been standing in the shadows of a tree for so long now, watching the little boy finally succeed, and the expression on his face was so priceless, I just wanted to kiss Potter for putting it there. ?Alright bud, I think that?s about enough for one night, what do you say?? Douglas nodded and then beamed up at his hero. ?You go on ahead, I?ll catch up with you later, k?? ?Okay!? Douglas sprinted towards the castle and as he hit the stairs I could hear him laughing again. I looked at James and he was just standing there chuckling pleasantly at the boy?s contagious laughter. When you could no longer hear Douglas he sighed, and still smiling, carried the broomsticks toward me. I was so curious, so intrigued by this stranger before me, that I again ignored the voice in my head telling me to run fast and hard, and instead stepped out of the shadows?. ?Hey there Potter,? he jumped at the sound of my voice, obviously unaware anyone else was outside. ?Oh Merlin, you scared me?? he peered into the shadows to see who it was and I stepped out, ?Evans! Oh, uh?hi? um?what are you doing out here?? I shrugged? ?Nothing really?just came out for some air, and heard you guys, thought I?d see what was going on. ?You didn?t want to go to Meg?s party?? ?Oh! No, I just figured, everyone would be busy celebrating, so no one would notice if we just slipped out?You don?t think she minded, did she?? ?Oh of course not, that?s not what I meant.? ?You know?that was a really sweet thing to do James.? ?Oh?I didn?t do anything??he seemed so awkward, so shy?so unlike the James Potter I thought I had pegged so well! ?Doug was just scared, and then they teased him, I-I just thought he could use a friend ?sall,? he mumbled quietly looking down at the grass, cheeks beginning to blush. I could not believe this was the same guy?I stopped for a minute and smiled, I couldn?t help it. He paused looking back, ?What?? ?You?re different tonight James.? ?Yah!? he smiled shyly and I laughed? So this was the true James Potter, he wasn?t cocky or conceited, he wasn?t tripping over his own ego as usual, he looked so sweet, so real. ?Lily can I ask you something?? ?Mm-hm. Shoot. As long as it?s not, ?Evans want to go on a date?? I laughed. ?Oh?? I was about to shoot myself, stupid Lily! ?Okay?? ?No wait, I didn?t mean it,? he shrugged, ?No really James?I?m sorry?I like talking to you like this.? ?Did you just say you liked me Evans?? ?Hey?? Oh no, was it only cocky Potter in disguise, but he just laughed jokingly and I laughed too. Phew. He was silent for a while, and he looked like he was trying to pluck up the courage for something?James Potter lacking courage? Never! ?Lily, I just have to tell you something,? I met his eyes and nodded, he took a deep breath? ?I?m in love with you,? I gaped at him. Love? ?What? I-I thought you just. I- I uhh what?? ?Oh,? he seemed hurt and a little confused. I watched his eyes shift left and right trying to make sense of everything that was happening in his head. I smiled, I loved his little habits, the way his brow furrowed when he concentrated, the way his smile could melt my heart. We were almost back to the castle. ?Well Evans I?ve got to put his broom up, I borrowed it from Madame Hooch.? Oh my God, I just realized what I was thinking. ?So I guess I?ll see you later.? Wait, I love you, I?m in love with you too! Don?t go. ??Night Lily,? he turned away dejectedly. Say it! I love you! Say it out loud! I?m in love with you! SAY IT NOW YOU COWARD! COME ON DO IT! NOW! ?I?M-IN-LOVE-WITH-YOU-TOO!? He froze. ?What?? I breathed for the first time in ages. I smiled and went to him, ?I?m in love with you too. I think I?ve always been, I was just so determined not to feed your ego?? It seemed to take him a minute to process and then we both laughed? ?You know, all I wanted was you.? ?Don?t worry, you?ve got me,? he smiled and I melted?I was all his? Shyly he leaned over and kissed me. It only lasted a few seconds, but to me it felt like a decade. Our fingers intertwined and they fit perfectly. I looked in his eyes, he had me? and he always would. (more...)
