Christmas Eve and Other Stories
Is the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's Christmas Eve and Other Stories a holiday rock opera? Or perhaps just a holiday prog-rock disc? Or maybe it's New Age? Whatever the case may be, this isn't your typical Christmas album. Filled with electric guitar solos, plenty of synthesized keyboards, a children's choir, and lively drumming, Christmas Eve can only be compared to one other record, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other holiday disc, The Christmas Attic. On this CD, angelic vocal solos (on numbers such as "The Prince of Peace") are interspersed with driving instrumentals. Sentimental, occasionally bombastic, but as high-concept as holiday albums can be. --Jason Verlinde

The Lost Christmas Eve
If you're looking for something out of the ordinary for the season, The Lost Christmas Eve is for you. This final entry in the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's rock opera trilogy is perhaps their most ambitious and complex in the series. Like its predecessors, The Lost Christmas Eve tells the story of heaven's youngest angel called back to earth to continue Jesus' unfinished work. This time he lands in New York City to help redeem not only Christmas, but the soul of humankind itself with a story line that rivals anything Frank Capra ever dreamt up for the big screen. Conceived and composed by Aerosmith and Savatage producer Paul O'Neill, most of the song were penned O'Neill, Robert Kinkle, and Savatage founder and keyboardist Jon Oliva, and features the rest of the seminal Florida metal band on the record. While not as bombastic as Savatage's fourteen rock epics which touch on topics as diverse as the Russian Revolution, the 15th century explorer Ferdinand Magellan's descendants, and Beethoven's last night, the record still has a grandiose, almost over-arching baroque feel, with its prog-rock organ swells and electronic alchemy. The best moments are during the soaring instrumentals, on tracks like the "Wisdom of Snow," "Wish Litz," "Christmas Bells, Carousels & Time," and the majestic rendering of "O Come All Ye Faithful." --Jaan Uhelszki

Riverdance - The Show
Riverdance--The Show is a cultural phenomenon that defies criticism for the enthusiastic and leaves everyone else scratching their heads. The wonderfully talented cast, headed by the Riverdance Irish Dance Company, bewitchingly spins (and stomps) its Celtic folk choreography featuring numerous breathless solos by Michael Flatley (since departed) and Jean Butler. The mellifluous Riverdance Orchestra boasts Davy Spillane, who coaxes plaintive lamentations out of a peculiar instrument that resembles a bagpipe in a metal leg brace. For Enya fans, there is the sound-alike choral group Anuna, who casts a similarly New Age-style vocal spell. Also thrown into the mix are such disparate folk traditions as American gospel and Spanish flamenco. Though it's only 70 minutes long, Riverdance is repetitive by half. But judging from the ecstatic audience ovations and the continued foot-stomping during and after the curtain calls, too much is still not enough. --Richard Natale

Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker (American Ballet Theatre)
The American Ballet Theater version of the Tchaikovsky classic, a 1977 studio rendition directed by Tony Charmoli, has become a holiday perennial on PBS stations and home video. It's a favorite of parents who want to give their kids the gift of culture--and with good reason. There's a loose fairy tale plot to keep dance neophytes interested, and Boris Aronson's eye-candy production design is a series of lavish dioramas. From an imperial-era Russian Christmas party out of Tolstoy, a young girl named Clara (Gelsey Kirkland) is whisked in dreams to an imaginary world populated by the animated creations of the wizard toy maker Drosselmeier (Alexander Minz), who prances on his stick-thin limbs like a Dickens illustration come to life. The main attraction is, of course, Mikhail Baryshnikov, one of the greatest classical dancers of the century, at his absolute peak of athleticism and precision. An opening slow-motion montage diagrams his fabled smoothness of execution, elegant airborne trajectories that have a feather-light perfection. Music lovers who know only "The Nutcracker Suite" will relish the chance to hear this great score all the way through, conducted with lilt and vigor by Kenneth Schermerhorn. --David Chute

The Best of Victor Borge Acts I and II
Victor Borge was a master at combining two seemingly disparate elements: comedy and classical music. While the Dane's dapper dignity fit the image of "longhair" music, Borge undercut it with broad physical comedy, clever spoofs, and off-the-cuff wit. A pioneer in the field of live comedy recordings, Borge is nevertheless best appreciated on video, and The Best of Victor Borge Acts One and Two captures a 90-minute concert that includes many of his most famous routines. He chides late-arriving members of the Minneapolis audience ("I come from Copenhagen and was here before you!"), falls off the piano bench, and reads his sheet music upside down. There are a few unwitting guests: a stagehand drafted to turn Borge's pages, soprano Marylyn Mulvey who tries to sing a Verdi aria through Borge's teasing and scolding, and Sahan Arzruni as he and Borge play a two-piano Hungarian rhapsody on a single piano by climbing over and around each other. Borge also presents an opera "written by Mozart but credited to Salieri" ("so you can imagine what kind of opera it is") and proves that he's not merely a clown by skillfully performing a set of waltzes and lullabies. In addition, two of his best-loved sketches are nonmusical: Inflationary Language, in which numbers in language, like the economy, are increased ("I'll go back to Elevenessee.... Three-dleoo."), and Phonetic Punctuation, in which a period is read aloud to sound like fft and an exclamation point fsss fft. Like Anna Russell and PDQ Bach, Victor Borge helped make classical music accessible to a wide audience by showing that it could be laugh-out-loud funny. --David Horiuchi

Open Question: Muslim Girl Forbidden Love?
I,23, really like this Islamic girl, 25, and she really likes what I do (art related/work). Now, I've hung out with her a couple of times. She always compliments something of mine: my work, art, music, parking skills, etc. She on the other hand is in the financial industry and is well off.
Interesting enough, she was coming to see my office and was robbed in the area. Despite that she came out and saw me again. She doesn't wear the Islamic hijab - just contemporary clothes. I was talking to her the other time and she mentioned that her family is religious and that she is even more so. (Maybe I heard the other way around because I was nervous :)
She drives a nice Sports Car and loves Club music and goes to concerts. I don't know about you, but this sounds like an American girl (she came here when she was 4). But many of the times I've flirted with her through text messages, she would claim she's weird or challenge them (in a playful demeanor), instead of simply flirting back. They are interesting conversations to read though.
I found out shes a virgin (Hey I know how to ask provoking questions). My question is will she be able to adapt (not change religion) to being a girlfriend and if so does deprivation of sex make her "crazy in bed"? Any psychologists her? Or is it the total opposite that she is used to the lack of sex. I'm think she must have a sex drive, be it a little dusty lol.
I know there are more attractive girls out there that I know, but this one seems special. Its just something about her that makes me feel arm inside. Every second I'm not with her, I feel like I'm wasting all my talents on some crappy girl haha...I must be a hopeless romantic.
I'm predicting a lot of you will say forget it, nothing I could do, but rest assured I'm going after her!!! Just need some pointers :)

Open Question: Why is my Sony 8GB Walkman now pairing artist sorting in groups of 2 letters instead of 1?
I guess it's not a big deal, but my sony walkman mp3 pairs letters in groups of 2 under artist (in music library). By this I mean, instead of letting me move left/right to go to artists with the letter A, B, C, D, etc., it only gives me the option of AB, CD, EF, GH, etc. Most letters take up the full screen, so I don't even see the second letter without scrolling the whole way down out of the first letter.
It wasn't like this originally. I formatted (deleted all the songs) the mp3 because I had my non-full albums listed under their artist just as "all" and it counted "all" as one huge album with the same cover art, so I took the effort to go through my WMP and give album titles for all the songs. Once I re-synced, it now does the two letter thing.
I can't find anything in the settings that dictates this. Can you help?

Open Question: Is there a way to win his heart?
I'm a high school junior, intelligent (okay, I'm a nerd), into art and music. He's a senior at the same school; tall, dark, handsome, etc.
We have both been on the Speech & Debate team since the beginning of last year, and I've had a crush on him for just about that same amount of time. I've actually dated two other guys since I met this guy, but at least part of the reason I've broken up with them has been because I love this other kid.
Late last summer I indirectly told him that I liked him (you know the old middle-school tricks with notes and best friends? Yeah. I am that ridiculous). He called me on the phone and told me things like "You brighten my day" and "it's great when you come visit me at work"... but that he didn't want a relationship.
I tried to let it go.
We actually became closer friends after that; but it really just made me like him more. Sound like a soap opera? I should sell the rights to this story, because it gets better!
He actually started to act different; I could never tell if he was just insanely kind or he was flirting with me, which would be sending a serious mixed message. He did things for me like run back to the bus (the parking lot was a mile away in this instance) to get my sweater. He told me he wanted to be my Debate partner. And every Speech practice, he would call my cell phone to let him in the school doors (practice is after-hours).
I asked another boy to winter formal last month; This guy was there, too, of course, and we all danced as high school students do and it was super fun.
I told him that I liked him still via an ongoing email message; he told me "I don't think you understand, and I don't really either. We need to talk, in person, if that's ok with you."
That was a few weeks ago, and though we've seen each other around school and stuff, we haven't discussed this particular matter.
There is a two-day tournament coming up; we two are debate partners, so we'll be spending countless hours together, mostly bored out of our minds waiting for the next round to begin.
What should I do?
