Saint-Saens' Samson et Dalila - San Francisco Opera
Saint-Saens' Samson et Dalila - San Francisco Opera In an introductory talk for this production, conductor Julius Rudel revives the time-honored discussion of whether Samson et Dalila should be treated as an oratorio (Saint-Saëns's original intention) or an opera (his final decision). The San Francisco production chooses a solidly operatic approach, leaning more toward the style of a Hollywood biblical epic than that of an oratorio. Operatic features include colorful (even downright exotic) costumes, brisk tempos, hyperactive choreography for the orgiastic bacchanale, generally brisk tempos, and a spectacular ending that brings down not only the curtain but the scenery.

The story of Samson and Delilah excites skepticism in many modern minds; it is the story of a superhero who loses his power because of a haircut, suffers captivity, is blinded and humiliated, and gets his strength back just long enough for a spectacular suicide that destroys his enemies. The San Francisco visuals, exaggerating improbabilities, do not make it easy to suspend disbelief. But the singers go right to the psychological and emotional heart of this tale of seduction, betrayal, repentance, and expiation. Shirley Verrett and Placido Domingo were their generation's most celebrated exponents of the title roles. They were at their peak in 1981 when this performance took place, and they generate enormous emotional power. They are well-supported by an excellent cast, notably Wolfgang Brendel (Le Grand-Prêtre de Dagon) and Arnold Voketaitis (Abimelech). --Joe McLellan

Black & White
Black & White James Toback's portrait of white and black culture mixing it up on the streets of Manhattan is like two films colliding. In the center of the swirl are a group of upper-class white teens (led by Elijah Wood and pop singer Bijou Phillips) who appropriate hip-hop culture to rebel against their affluent lifestyle, and a posse of gangstas and drug dealers (led by rap producer Oli "Power" Grant) who are themselves trying to get off the streets and into the business culture through their music. Aging indie filmmaker Toback has long shown an interest in character contradictions and quirks. Here the dynamic works: The two groups are genuinely curious about one another and mix with a cautious but untroubled ease. Less successful is the contrived drama that orbits this cultural mix but never quite meshes--such as Ben Stiller as a self-loathing New York cop who blackmails college basketball star Allan Houston into betraying his boyhood buddy turned street criminal.

Toback spices his Altmanesque style of restless camera work and impressionistic intercutting with attitude, nervous energy, and in-your-face sex. There's an interesting story to be told here, but the provocative cultural mix gets lost in the self-conscious melodrama and only periodically roars to life, notably in the edgy, unpredictable scenes with Mike Tyson (an inspired bit of casting that works marvelously). Also featured are rapper Raekwon, supermodel Claudia Schiffer, Brooke Shields, and Robert Downey Jr. --Sean Axmaker

Open Question: APPLYING FOR HIGH SCHOOL! application essay help!....... PLEASE!?!?
this is what they want (copied and pasted) "The purpose of this portion of the application is to help the committee get a sense of you as an individual, what you are like and what interests you. Please write, in fewer than 500 words, any information which you think will help us to do that." is this good?: My name is _______. I am a student currently attending _______, a blue ribbon school, in _______. I consider myself to be a well-rounded student. I participate in athletics, including alpine ski racing for the USSA (United States Skiing/Snowboarding Association), NYSSRA (New York State Ski Racing Association), and NASTAR. I also have a strong passion for music and theatre. In my school, I play the role of Mae "Mama" Peterson, one of the female leads, in this year's production of Bye Bye Birdie. I have taken piano lessons for a little over a year, yet my ability has increased tremendously in the short amount of time. I took singing lessons for four years and apply my skills earned practicing piano to continually expand my range. Also within my school, I participate in the winter and spring concerts, both vocally and instrumentally. I feel a very important part of being a good citizen would be putting in community service hours. Every Tuesday, I volunteer at the church I attend, _______, and teach first graders about our religion for an hour and a half. I am also a part of the National Junior Honor Society and put in time to discuss community service projects. Although some might say there is nothing to gain, I feel there is a sense of pride and accomplishment that comes when I help out others. I am hoping that there are others, like me, who are able to say the same. (the lines are personal info that i dont wanna post) is it good? (more...)

Resolved Question: Who Owns Blu-Ray ??????
okay so this is from wikipedia please read it and help me with my q. The "Blu-ray Disc Founder group" was started in May 2002 by nine leading electronic companies: Sony, Matsushita, Pioneer, Philips, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, and Samsung. Spearheaded by Sony Corporation, on February 19, 2002 the companies announced[2] that they were the "Founders" of the Blu-ray Disc and later changed their name to the "Blu-ray Disc Association" on May 18, 2004 to allow more companies to join their development. Some examples of companies that signed in include Apple, TDK, Dell, Hewlett Packard, The Walt Disney Company, Warner Bros. and Universal Music Group. As of December 2007, there are more than 250 members and supporters of the Association. - Wikipedia so does that mean say, apple could sell blu-ray to microsoft xbox? or do they not have that authority, cause i thought sony had more power over the rights etc. (more...)

Open Question: Any tips for applying for Physical Therapy school?
I am currently in my senior undergraduate year at University of Oregon where I have finished my human physiology major and desire to apply to PT schools. I am nervous about applying to schools because my credentials include: Overall GPA: 2.72 GRE score: 1010 / 1600 Experience: PT shadowing (30 hours) and more to come Hospital Patient Discharge: 200+ hours Recommendations: 1 PT, 1 PT/professor, 1 Professor Extracurricular activities: 11th and 12th Grade Catholic school Counselor, 13 years of piano under Oregon Music Teacher's Association During my sophomore year, my grades suffered due to the fact that I was not happy with my bio major (changed it that following summer) and my mother was diagnosed with late stages of breast cancer. I observed and accompanied my mother during PT sessions which was an eye opening experience to me. Over the years, I have improved, showed personal growth and racked up better grades but I believe I am in a tight situation when looking at grad schools. What can I do to maximize my chances to get accepted to PT schools? With my current GPA, should I not even bother applying to schools with minimum GPA of 3.0? (more...)

Resolved Question: Best use of a Rock song on a programme trailer, R&P...?
Good evening R&P :) Here in Britain, Channel 5 is going to be broadcasting a documentary series called "Warzone" following the lives of troops in Afghanistan, at Kandahar Air Field. To trailer the upcoming show, the music they chose was... the opening of Hendrix's version of 'All Along the Watchtower'. Did it suit the show? Of course it did! It was perfect ~ really evoked the memories of watching "Woodstock", and the associations of Vietnam. So ladies and gentlemen {and whatever else you may be}, what, in your opinions, are the best uses of Rock songs on programme trailers? And it has to be trailers, *not* adverts. Links appreciated ~ sorry, no one has put "Warzone" on Youtube yet! ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ Dani! {{{HUG}}} Very nice choice :) ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ Another one they've just done : Trailer for series 2 of "Ice Road Truckers" uses Jimi's 'Crosstown Traffic' (more...)

Resolved Question: R&P: Spectacular! vs HSM?
So I recently learned of some movie Nickelodeon plans to release in 09 titled "Spectacular!". I thought it was going to be some crappy High School Musical variant but then I saw this promo video where I guess the leading guy is singing. Now growing up in an age where teenagers who think they can sing are immediately boosted to idol status and given record label contracts just because they were on Disney is very sad, but I have to say Nickelodeon seems to be bringing in some real talent, as in people who actually know how to sing. If this dude put out an album, I think I'd buy it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4uDNeibqQs&feature=related So I guess my question is, are there any of todays teen stars who you think actually deserve everything that comes their way, and are there any who you actually think are overlooked? Maybe some people who do have talent but are always bashed on because of their association with Disney and the type of music they create? mq: Did you like that song? I did LMAO Spooks! That is not Josh Peck, this guys name is Nolan Gerard Funk =D The dancing is unnecessary, thanks for that Starlight. (more...)

Resolved Question: R&P: a song about being rescued or saved?
Swiss rescue officials say they found two missing skiers after spotting the light from their MP3 music player. The Swiss air rescue association Rega says it received a distress call from the French tourists late Friday but the skiers' phone battery went dead before they could be reached. The two men were eventually found after midnight in steep, wooded terrain by a helicopter crew that spotted the light from their digital music player. Amazing? you bet and a question is inspired whats a song about being saved or with rescue in the title WB Sabby missed you! everything good with ya? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNbTC6xLVg0 Save me - Aimee Mann SABBY: doing better, I took a day off myself yesterday it was time for me to "get a Life" lol, feeling great now!
