Stradivari's Genius: Five Violins, One Cello, and Three Centuries of Enduring Perfection
Stradivari's Genius: Five Violins, One Cello, and Three Centuries of Enduring Perfection Antonio Stradivari (1644—1737) was a perfectionist whose single-minded pursuit of excellence changed the world of music. In the course of his long career in the northern Italian city of Cremona, he created more than a thousand stringed instruments; approximately six hundred survive, their quality unequalled by any subsequent violin-maker. In this fascinating book, Toby Faber traces the rich, multilayered stories of six of these peerless creations–five violins and a cello–and the one towering artist who brought them into being. Blending history, biography, meticulous detective work, and an abiding passion for music, Faber takes us from the salons of Vienna to the concert halls of New York, and from the breakthroughs of Beethoven’s last quartets to the first phonographic recordings. This magnificent narrative invites us to share the life, the intrigue, and the incomparable beauty of the world’s most marvelous stringed instruments.

Strategies for Teaching Strings: Building a Successful String and Orchestra Program
Strategies for Teaching Strings: Building a Successful String and Orchestra Program Strategies for Teaching Strings is an essential guide for prospective, novice, and experienced string teachers. Acclaimed instructors Donald L. Hamann and Robert Gillespie share their years of experience, providing readers with all the information and skills necessary to teach string instruments in schools and to develop a successful school orchestra program.
Based on national standards for teaching strings and orchestra, the text begins by introducing the string instrument family and presenting an overview of the school orchestra program. Subsequent chapters--divided into three levels of string competency corresponding to elementary, middle, and high school skills--cover performance goals and objectives, strategies for teaching technical and performance skills, and solutions to common playing problems for each ability level. Rehearsal planning and preparation, rehearsal techniques, practical approaches to teaching improvisation, student recruitment and retention, and choosing literature for the school orchestra are also covered. The book is enhanced by illustrations and photographs that demonstrate correct playing techniques and fingering positions. An appendix includes information about special pedagogical approaches and professional string associations. A full listing of the national content standards established by the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) and by the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) appears in Chapter 6.

Open Question: How do I find a sailboat music box? I am looking for a specific one.?
When I was younger, we got a sailboat music box at a garage sale, I believe. It was copper (or at least it looked like copper) It had a music box piece below it that I had to wind up to make it play a tune. As it played the tune, the sailboat would rise up and down (looking like it was sailing on waves) because its bow was resting on a part of the music box. As the music box turned and made music, a bar protruding from the front of it would make the boat's bow rise and fall. It broke a long time ago, and most of the pieces have since gone missing. I have looked all over the internet. Do you know where I can find one like it? I only have the little wind-up music box part now, which says Jokiwol, made in Japan. Searching for that yielded no results either. (more...)

Open Question: The Man With The Hoe by Edwin Markham; need help with this poem. (EXPLANATION like context clues etc.)?
The Man with the Hoe Bowed by the weight of centuries he leans Upon his hoe and gazes on the ground, The emptiness of ages in his face, And on his back the burden of the world. Who made him dead to rapture and despair, A thing that grieves not and that never hopes. Stolid and stunned, a brother to the ox? Who loosened and let down this brutal jaw? Whose was the hand that slanted back this brow? Whose breath blew out the light within this brain? Is this the Thing the Lord God made and gave To have dominion over sea and land; To trace the stars and search the heavens for power; To feel the passion of Eternity? Is this the Dream He dreamed who shaped the suns And marked their ways upon the ancient deep? Down all the stretch of Hell to its last gulf There is no shape more terrible than this ? More tongued with censure of the world's blind greed ? More filled with signs and portents for the soul ? More fraught with menace to the universe. What gulfs between him and the seraphim! Slave of the wheel of labor, what to him Are Plato and the swing of Pleiades? What the long reaches of the peaks of song, The rift of dawn, the reddening of the rose? Through this dread shape the suffering ages look; Time's tragedy is in the aching stoop; Through this dread shape humanity betrayed, Plundered, profaned, and disinherited, Cries protest to the Powers that made the world. A protest that is also a prophecy. O masters, lords and rulers in all lands, Is this the handiwork you give to God, This monstrous thing distorted and soul-quenched? How will you ever straighten up this shape; Touch it again with immortality; Give back the upward looking and the light; Rebuild in it the music and the dream, Make right the immemorial infamies, Perfidious wrongs, immedicable woes? O masters, lords and rulers in all lands How will the Future reckon with this Man? How answer his brute question in that hour When whirlwinds of rebellion shake all shores? How will it be with kingdoms and with kings ? With those who shaped him to the thing he is ? When this dumb Terror shall rise to judge the world. After the silence of the centuries? in the poem what do these word mean plato swing of pleiades rift of dawn peaks of song reddening of the rose dumb terror (more...)

Voting Question: I am having problems with 8th grade drama, anyone have an answer?
I just found out that all my 'friends' are a bunch of assholes. This girl, Amber wanted to start a fight with me, because I was trying to find where my so called bff was and looked back. She was hanging out with Amber. No big deal, I know Ivy has other friends, and I d0n't kn0w Amber t00 well. Amber got up in my face about how I better stop looking at her like that. She had 3 friends holding her makinmg her look tougher. No big deal I've heard about people like her. I stood straight up, evened my voice, stared her square in the eyes and said, "You don't scare me, and I wasn't even looking at you, why would I?" She responded by yelling crap at me about how she will beat me up, and I said even again, still staring her in the eyes, "Look if your gunna do something do it now, otherwise shut the hell up and stop wasting my time." She yelled, I kept track of the seconds. 1.2.3 Okay I started walking away, not fast not slow. She did that thing where it looks like she's running after you, but her friends were keeping her going really slow. 2 weeks later this shit is still happening everyday before school, and even on my way to get on the bus. It even got so bad the teachers were pulling me out of class to tell me someone told them I said that Amber is a pervert, and that Amber can knock me down in 2 seconds flat. So I talked to Ivy and said "You don't have a problem with Amber, and she seems to like you so please ask what her problem is, and why she keeps messing with me." The next day she said "Lexi, you are my old best friend, we've been best friends for 4 years now, and we had fun, but Amber is my NEW best friend, and we have m0re fun." S0 I t0ld her if she was gunna be like that that I don't want to hear her whining when Amber dumps her the exact same way she did me. Then I changed my mind and told her to tell me when Amber does that so I can look at her and say "Karma's a bitch isn't it? Well so am I and I don't ever want to talk to you again." right before walking off. 2 hours later the "leader" of the table, a guy that I never liked too much who used to go out with Ivy, told me "Don't bother trying to sit at the table." I responded with "I don't WANT to, there are other places, I'd rather spend my time than with you perverts, that make jokes about eating ice cream and when I'm angry. No I have better friends than you." He then said "Amber is taking your place at the table." I got pissed. I punched him 3 times, and said I didn't wasnt to sit at the table, but now I WILL." He tried to hit back, I ducked he hit a wall, and gave up on hitting me back. I went to sit down and everyone that was already there was saying how Amber was better than I am and how I can't sit next to them any more. I gave up, and sat next to a guy that they don't like, his name is Nathen, and we get along, but I never consdered us friends, until that day. When I sat down him and the other person at the table a girl that was in 7th grade, named Raven asked me if I was okay and what happened. I told him that Amber was getting on my last nerve, but that I was okay. When we dumped and went outside we told a couple of jokes I was in a better mood. Amber and my old posse walked up and started saying crap, so I told Raven a yo mamma joke, to ignore them. Amber said too much, I turned and looked at her and said "You know what, I don't care what you say about me, but I am a better person than you simply because I don't feel the need to be a bully. I am who I am and you need to leave me alone." She started yelling about "Why don't you say it to my face?" Nathen said "Amber quit being so retarded, and go away." She got mad, and I said "I'm scared, that if I get closer to your face, that I'll go blind from the ugliness radiating from it." Ivy, Travis, and Alex were "holding her back" this time. I rolled my eyes and walked very slowely to the band room. Raven and Nathen went but just stayed and talked to the teachers. I put my sax together, got my music and got orginized. While I was doing that like 20 kids ran in, staring with Amber and Amber was saying "Bitch I know Mrs. Bell you can't hide from me!" I said "Oh what a pity I was just thinking that my IQ would drop for every second I spend near you. So I ranaway in fear for my intelignce." She started trying to get near me, but the bell rang and she went to class. I told my mom what happened, that was on Thursday, before Christmas Break. She was going to get me transferred to Broken Bow, where my best friend goes to school now, but on Friday when she went up to the school she tripped and broke her kneecap, so I have to stay in Idabel for a couple of weeks. How do I get Amber to leave me alone? When Alex and Travis, and Ivy ask about my mom, and act like we're still friends what exacly do I say? I''m thinking fuck you, she's hurt cause your a bunch of assholes. If she wasn't hurt, I wouldn't be in this hell-hole school, but it all comes back to YOU so gey the I am asking for help not people critisizing how long the story is. I dindn't put the stars must have been the website censoring it. Wow, didn't I just say that I calmly looked her in the eyes and said everything in an icy voice. Nathen was about to come undone on her, which is why I decided to go to the band room. WOW from beep down those are some really good answers. I never said Ivy was a great best friend, I said "I just found out all my friends are assholes." which includes Ivy. (more...)

Resolved Question: What would you conclude my style/personality is?
From this: Hair: I love to change the color! I straighten and tease it. Right now it is light brown, dark brown lowlights and almost platinum highlights, shoulder length-ish shaggy layers. I put little bows in it sometimes... Makeup: Already pale- try to look paler. Light pink lip, lots of black eyeliner and shadow (blue-grey eyes). My skin is bad so I cover it up with lots of concealer, foundation, and powder! Clothes: I like skinny jeans- in bright color or stonewash; or just plain. I like random cutesy t-shirts. I own a lot of black. I weak a black oversized zipper hoodie all the time. Studded belts. Converse and vans. I look older than my age. I am rather large - I am 5 7 and I wear a size 13-15 pant. In other words- I have curvesAccessoriesesories: I like this sweatband with a pink cassette tape print. Bows for my hair, bracelets, arm warmers, suspenders, funky colorful sunglasses, non-prescription black square frame glasses, Me! I hate preps/plastics. I listen to post hardcore, emo music. I act a LOT older than my age, very mature, and handle a lot of other people's situations when they ask for advice. I don't really like myself at all and I think poorly of myself. I think I'm ugly. I am really crazy and clumsy. Totally random. I am unpredictable to the point where I scare myself. That's it! Ask questions if you want! I never said I was emo or that I wanted to be. And to all you fuckers who say I'm fat- I kinda already knew that bright ones! (more...)

Voting Question: is this monolouge good for my audition?
Im auditioning for an arts school next year. and i would like to know if this monolouge is good for me, im 14 by the way. LEANOR (bangs gavel) Ladies! Ladies! Uh, thank you, Clara. Clara, that's enough! Stop the music, will you? There now. Hasn't this been fun? Like our July 4th parade! Now you might as well go back to your seats, girls, because we're not going to announce the winners until you're all settled. In the meantime, I want to take this opportunity to thank Leena Carlson, our program chairman. Stand up and take a bow, Leena, whoever you are! There she is! She's that Marilyn Monroe! (ELEANOR leads the audience in applause) Now there's been a nasty rumor going the rounds that Leena dreamed up this whole fantasy party so that she could show off that red sequin dress . The way I heard it, she paid $400.00 for it to wear on her anniversary, but when Bill saw that it was cut down to her appendix practically, he wouldn?t let her out of the house in it! Not anywhere there's men! Not true, not a word of it. I happen to know that Leena borrowed this contest idea from the Chicopee Women's Guild, and the dress she got from her sister-in-law, who used to sing with a rock band. So shame on you gossip, whoever you are! ( speaking to judges offstage) Are you ready yet? What? (turns to consult unseen judges.) Oh. I'm supposed to tell you Jackie O's that the judges thought you were all very good, especially that one in the pink, with the blood on her stockings: but the ground rules say very plainly that our heroine can't be anybody who's married to somebody who's more famous than she is. So I'm afraid we have to rule that Jack was, no matter what he said to the French that time! Of course that eliminates you Nancy Reagans, too---and I suppose it 'd even apply to me, if I were out there in the running! ! I knew I never should have married that upstart Franklin. (looking off) Now? (goes offstage, returns with a paper) At last! The moment we've all been waiting for!.The runners up in today?s contest are-! Fanfare, please, Clara! (piano fanfare) Susie Coombes as Heloise, and Rochelle Singer as Lady Godiva! Take a bow, girls, and ladies, give them a big hand! (more...)
