KitchenAid K45SS Classic 250-Watt 4-1/2-Quart Stand Mixer, White
KitchenAid K45SS Classic 250-Watt 4-1/2-Quart Stand Mixer, White KitchenAid's stand mixer is a substantial piece of equipment: 250 watts of mixing power make child's play of creaming butter, kneading dough, and whipping cream. The kid in you will appreciate how quick and easy it is to mix up a batch of cookie dough; the 4-1/2-quart bowl can hold up to 8 cups of flour, which translates into as many as 192 sweet treats.

This model comes with three attachments: a flat beater for making batter, meat loaf, and all textures in-between; a wire whip for egg whites, mayonnaise, and more air-infused creations; and a hook for mixing and kneading yeast doughs. All three are solid in construction and easily secured to the beater shaft with a simple twist; untwisting them is a bit trickier because the attachment stems are short and can be hard to grasp, especially if they get the least bit greasy. The bowl itself locks tight to the base.

Standing 14 inches high, jutting out a foot, and weighing more than a grown woman's bowling ball, this stand mixer isn't the sort of appliance you'll wipe down and put away. Better to find a square foot of free counter space for easy access; besides, this machine is as pretty as it is rugged--you'll want to show it off.

To complete the package, KitchenAid includes a spiral-bound guide with instructions, mixing tips, and 67 recipes, from crispy waffles to a caramel walnut banana torte. --Betsy Danheim

My Man Godfrey (Hollywood Classics Collector's Edition)
My Man Godfrey (Hollywood Classics Collector's Edition) Director Gregory La Cava deftly balances satire, romance, and social comment in this 1936 classic, which echoes Frank Capra in its Depression-era subtext. The Bullocks are a well-heeled, harebrained Manhattan family genetically engineered for screwball collisions: father Alexander (Eugene Pallette, of the foghorn voice and thick-knit eyebrows) is the breadwinner at wit's end, thanks to his spoiled daughters, the sultry Cornelia (Gail Patrick) and the sweet but scatterbrained Irene (a luminous Carole Lombard), his dizzy and doting wife, Angelica (Alice Brady), and her "protégé," Italian freeloader Carlo (Mischa Auer). When Irene wins a society scavenger hunt (and atypically trumps her scheming sister) by producing a "lost man," a seeming tramp named Godfrey (William Powell), all their lives are transformed. With the always suave, effortlessly funny Powell in the title role, this mystery man provides the film's conscience and its model of decency; the giddy, passionate Lombard holds out its model for triumphant love. In a movie riddled with memorable comic highlights, the real miracle is the unapologetic romanticism that prevails. --Sam Sutherland

Kid Galahad
Kid Galahad Elvis Presley tries on boxing gloves for Kid Galahad, one of his post-Army pictures that still has some fresh air and innocence in it. First spotted crooning from the back of a pickup truck, Elvis plays an ex-G.I. newly returned to his foresty birthplace, where shifty Gig Young runs a boxing camp. Naturally the kid turns out to have talent with the gloves, and a gamblers/mobsters/boxing formula soon kicks in. Meanwhile, Elvis turns his attention to Joan Blackman (from Blue Hawaii) and Young resists making an honest woman of girlfriend Lola Albright. Charles Bronson, who didn't get on well with Elvis, has a hefty role as an incorruptible trainer. The songs squeezed in around this are humdrum, and even the best ones can't accurately be described as rock & roll. Director Phil Karlson, a dab hand at action films (The Phenix City Story), gets some savagery into the fight scenes, and the early location work has a nice breezy feel. As for Presley himself, the early signs of stupor are beginning to be apparent; after the enjoyable opening reel he lacks the old spirit, looking understandably unengaged by the material or his co-stars. --Robert Horton

Open Question: Protestants, Why do us Catholics have statues in Church?
Why do us Catholics have statues in Church? PLEASE DON'T DELETE. THANK YOU. I gave you everything why we have statues in Church with the most beautiful art in the world too. give it a thought; what if someone can't read and we can use pictures to show them the story of Jesus and of Moses. read this about one of your own. Anything can be an idol if we worship it as a god We have to be careful not to turn anything into an idol. Matt Redmond, the great evangelical worship leader stopped playing music in his Church for 3 months because he said that the congregation was worshiping the music and not God. He recognized that they were idolizing the music. Anything can be an idol if it takes the place of God. For some people money is an idol, for others it is their work, or a beautiful movie star. For me when I was growing up, fame was an idol. Even when I got on Broadway and in the US national Tour of "Cats," I was not happy. It was not enough, because fame was a false god. I could really relate to the big hit song of the 80's called "Fame". The lyrics were "Fame, I'm going to live forever. I'm going to learn how to fly." Fame was an idol for me. After I turned my life over to Jesus, I gave up music for 10 years to straighten my head out and focus on the Lord. I'm so grateful to be able to sing for him today. Now read why we have statues in Church. Statues helped the illiterate people For the first 1600 years of Christianity, most people couldn't read or write. Every stained glass window and statue in medieval Churches told a story. Illiterate people could look at the stained glass pictures on the windows of the Churches and understand the story. So not only were the statues and paintings beautiful and reverent, but they were also very functional. They told the Bible story and the Priest could point to them during his homilies. Statues and stained glass were, for them, teaching tools and reminders. If we walk around any classic sanctuary and we'll see the statues, each saint holding his symbol. A well trained Christian could learn the stories of all those saints, and pass them along to his children, even if he couldn't read. This also explains the classic format of the windows: a large central picture surrounded by a host of smaller vignettes. With proper explanation, one could learn the whole story of, say, John the Baptist, along with all important tie-ins to the life of Christ. These were not false images to be worshiped, but reminders of the story of Salvation. Statues helped me Another reason I have no problem with statues is because they were part of a decisive moment in my decision for Jesus. I walked in off the street to St. Joseph's oratorio in Montreal and saw a few elderly women putting their hands on the feet of the statue of Jesus, whispering prayers and humbly walking away with their heads bowed. I was very moved and said to myself, "These women have faith! Maybe the Church isn't a cold stone building full of hypocrites" - which was my attitude before that moment. I did not run over and worship the statue. I went upstairs a lay down in front of the cross and turned my life over to Jesus Christ who saved me. These women witnessed to me by expressing their faith through art. The Bible and statues Here are several Biblical passages where we see statues that are used as a vehicle through which the faithful worship and honour God. "Make [a statue of] a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and every one who is bitten, when he sees it shall live. So Moses made a bronze serpent, and set it on a pole; and if a serpent bit any man, he would look at the bronze serpent and live" (Num 21: 4-9) "In the sanctuary were two cherubim, each ten cubits high, [15 feet high!] made of olive wood..." (1 Kgs 6:23-28, 7:23-26) "Make two cherubim of beaten gold at the two ends of mercy seat, fastening them so that one cherub springs direct from each end" (Ex 25:18) "The Dwelling itself you shall make out of sheets woven of fine linen twined and of violet, purple and scarlet yarn with cherubim embroidered on them" (Ex 26:1) In the Old Testament it is forbidden to eat pork, but in the New Testament the Lord says that all foods are clean, and he lifts this ban. Likewise, Catholics believe that when God revealed himself to mankind he lifted the ban on making visual representations of him. I think deep down most Evangelicals understand this, otherwise they would not be able to go to any movies that have images of Jesus in them. They would consider movies like "The Nativity" blasphemous. Nor would they be able to have children's illustrated Bibles with pictures of Jesus. The Greek word "icon", means image. Jesus is the visible image of the unseen God. Here's the opening quote on the Vatican's fine art collection. 122. The fine arts are rightly classed among the noblest activities of man's genius; this is especially true of religious art and of its highest manifestation, sacred art. O Of their nature the arts are directed toward expressing in some way the infinite beauty of God in works made by human hands. Their dedication to the increase of God's praise and of his glory is more complete, the more exclusively they are devoted to turning men's minds devoutly toward God. (Vatican II, SACROSANCTUM CONCILIUM , 122) If we replace the word "art" with "music" in the above statement, I'm sure the Evangelical music industry would say "ditto." So in summary, Catholics should keep sharing their art with the public and Evangelicals should keep making their music. Also the Catholics should try to make better music for the Lord (that's what I'm trying to to) and the Evangelicals should get a little more visual Art. You're starting to catch up with the posters and stuff. Iconoclasm In the Greek, iconoclasm means "image breaker". This heresy, like its name suggests, has a paranoid fear and rejection of the use of images or icons in religion. With the exception of High Church Anglicanism, most Protestant Churches have a heightened aversion to the use of sacred pictures or objects in their worship services, whose attitude they assumed, ironically enough, from Islam. Other contemporary sects who can be considered iconoclasts include the Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses. Although present throughout the Church's history, the most infamous period of iconoclasm occurred in the eighth century. Because of the Islamic incursion in North Africa and Asia minor during this period of history, Emperor Leo III and iconoclastic Eastern bishops sought to sanitize the Faith of images which were offensive to Muslim eyes. In so doing, they believed that conversions to Christianity might be more likely. Through the reigns of Leo III, Constantine V, and Leo IV, iconoclasm was ruthlessly enforced by the systematic destruction of icons, statues, and sacred images. Not until the Second Nicaean Council in 787 A.D., some 60 years later, was the ancient Catholic tradition restored and a distinction made between adoration ("latria") and veneration ("dulia"). The Council re-affirmed the constant custom of venerating religious images and icons while at the same time renouncing "icon worship". Biblical evidence for the Church's position can be found in these passages: Exodus 25:18 Exodus 25:18-22, Exodus 28:33-34, Exodus 37:7-9, Numbers 21:8-9, 1 Kings 6:23-28 1 Kings 7:23-29, 2 Chronicles ch. 3-5. Protestants, you have your so called good rock bands. That make people worship the music and not God. that is so sad. Catholics, we have Bach, Mozart, Andrew T. Miller, all the Classical Music that was made for the Churches. the question is; Why do us Catholics have Statues in Church? the rest of it is the answer why. (more...)

I'm trying to find the name of this song. It's from the 1930's or 1940's, and I think the genre is big band, but I don't know. The only lyrics I have are "eyedi eyedi eyedi eye; odie odie odie oh; eedi eedi eedi eee..." Yeah. I don't even know if I spelled that right, but that's all I got. I've heard it a dozen times, but I just can't find the artist or title. I think the man who sang it was black, but once again, I have no idea. If anyone has knowledge of classic big band/swing music, I'd appreciate the help. Thanks! (more...)
