Mozart - Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) / Haitink, Finley, Hagley, Fleming, Glyndebourne Festival Opera

Mozart's immortal adaptation of Beaumarchais's satirical tale has always been a Glyndebourne staple, so it was appropriate that this delightfully traditional production of
Le Nozze di Figaro was chosen to reopen their refurbished opera house in May 1994. John Gunter's set design is airy and uncluttered, leaving the actors plenty of breathing space, while director Stephen Medcalf likewise allows the characters to speak (and sing) for themselves. Gerald Finley's Figaro and Alison Hagley's Susanna make a charming central pairing; Renée Fleming and Andreas Schmidt are a formidable aristocratic duo, while Marie-Ange Todorovitch fills Cherubino's trousers with pleasing playfulness. Bernard Haitink and the London Philharmonic sparkle, as of course they should. Unfussily filmed, this is as close to the real thing as you're likely to get without a Glyndebourne season ticket.

Gluck - Orfeo ed Euridice / Leppard, Baker, Speiser, Gale, Glyndebourne Festival Opera

For her farewell operatic performance in 1982, Dame Janet Baker, one of the 20th century's finest operatic performers, bowed out with her signature role in this classic production of one of opera's purest masterpieces. The story is archetypal: a love so strong that it conquers death. It is told with a deceptive simplicity that does not deprive it of great depth. It was a wise choice for a momentous occasion, and the resulting video is a classic of the highest quality--noble, superbly controlled, expertly balancing intense passion and deep serenity. It is a superb memento of a great artist.
Orfeo ed Euridice makes enormous demands of the mezzo-soprano, which Baker fulfills precisely, but it is not quite a one-woman show. Elisabeth Speiser (Euridice) and Elizabeth Gale (the God of Love) are not quite up to her level, but they provide adequate support. The chorus of demons is vividly scary in its finest moments; the blessed spirits are rather static and the concluding dances rather long, but they precisely embody the spirit of Gluck's limpid music. Raymond Leppard conducts with a detailed knowledge of the proper style. --Joe McLellan

Baby Einstein - Baby Mozart - Music Festival

It's called "the Mozart Effect," the notion that exposing youngsters to the melodies of the maestro can improve verbal ability, spatial intelligence, creativity, and memory. It's a pretty big leap of faith to understand that effect unless you personally see a toddler react to the stimulation. The Baby Einstein folks have a series of tapes (
Baby Einstein,
Baby Bach) that add visual stimulation to the bouncy recordings (using vibraphone, Rhodes electric piano, and even a glockenspiel). The melodies are heard against colorful imagery of spinning tops, wave machines, soft baby toys, mobiles, and the like. Several parenting groups and magazines have heralded the tapes for children 1 to 36 months, but the Orwellian aspect of introducing babes in arms to the TV screen may cause many to just pick up the CD.

Open Question: Where to go on vacation this summer (read details please)?
I'm from Connecticut, 21and looking for something to do this summer.
I was thinking about Summerfest, but now that I look at it it seems way too "country" for my tastes and I only know two of the performers for this year so that's a bad sign. Plus, it's totally centered around music for the most part, the other events don't interest me.
We were thinking about Hawaii but it's pretty expensive and I don't want to go somewhere for only two days.
Anyone know of any places my mother and two others (friends for both of us) could go, even if we may split up at times? I'm kind of interested in some festival type thing but something large if it's that.
If you're going to name a place can you give me some reasons WHY we should go other than it's name. And I prefer we stay in the US.
Thanks for any help.

Open Question: Paris in March, music, festivals, events, tourism?
I'm going to Paris for a little over a week from 3/19- 3/28 of this year 2009. I plan to go to the Louvre, Notre Dame, Sacre Coeur, etc. etc. etc., but I'm wondering if anyone knows of any concerts, festivals, or maybe even sporting events that will be happening around that time? I'd really like to see a concert while I'm there. I'm into classic rock, and indie, jam bands, that sort of thing. Thanks for your advice.

Open Question: Is there Chinese verion of the report "Temple Bar"?
I am looking for the Chinese version of the below article. If you read it be4, please show me its mandarin version, Thanks.
Temple Bar
It?s tacky. It?s touristy. It?s packed with falling-down-drunks at night and carpeted with vomit of a morning but Temple Bar, the city?s prime entertainment and eating spot, still has a certain something.
As one of Dublin?s oldest area, Temple Bar?s fortunes have ebbed and flowed for centuries. The western boundary, Fishamble Street, is the city?s oldest street, and dates to Viking times. Crime and prostitution moved in during the 18th century, followed by small craft and trade businesses in the 19th century.
By the first half of the 20th century Temple Bar had sunk into decline, along with most of central Dublin. A 1960s plan to build a major bus depot here was put on hold and by the 1980s the dilapidated area was home to a thriving community of artistes and cultural groups who paid low or no rents. The government soon recognized that local energy, and in 1991 began a major revamp.
Ironically, among the tourist-fodder restaurants and pubs, you?ll find some excellent galleries, off-beat shops and an independent cinema.
On Saturday Dublin?s foodies, families and city strollers amass at the excellent organic food market in Meeting house Sq to sample everything from tapas and farmhouse cheeses, to oysters and Guinness.
By night from May to September the square transforms into an open-air cinema, sometimes accompanied by live music from the Ark?s outdoor stage, as part of the annual Diversions festivals.
