The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter - Criterion Collection
The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter - Criterion Collection To cite Gimme Shelter as the greatest rock documentary ever filmed is to damn it with faint praise. This 1970 release benefits from a horrifying serendipity in the timing of the shoot, which brought filmmakers Albert and David Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin aboard as the Rolling Stones' tumultuous 1969 American tour neared its end. By following the band to the Altamont Speedway near San Francisco for a fatally mismanaged free concert, the Maysles and Zwerin wound up shooting what's been accurately dubbed rock's equivalent to the Zapruder film. The cameras caught the ominous undercurrents of violence palpable even before the first chords were strummed, and were still rolling when a concertgoer was stabbed to death by the Hell's Angels that served as the festival's pool cue-wielding security force.

By the time Gimme Shelter reached theater screens, Altamont was a fixed symbol for the death of the 1960s' spirit of optimism. The Maysles and Zwerin used that knowledge to shape their film: their chronicle begins in the editing room as they cut footage of the Stones' Madison Square Garden performance of "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and from there moves toward Altamont with a kind of dreadful grace. The songs become prophecies and laments for broken faith ("Wild Horses"), misplaced devotion ("Love in Vain"), and social collapse ("Street Fighting Man" and, of course, "Sympathy for the Devil"). Along the way, we glimpse the folly of the machinations behind the festival, the insularity of life on the concert trail, and the superstars' own shell-shocked loss of innocence.

Gimme Shelter looks into an abyss, partly self-created, from which the Rolling Stones would retreat--but unlike its subject, the filmmakers don't blink. --Sam Sutherland

Live 8
Live 8 Two decades years after Live Aid addressed the issue, lethally oppressive poverty in Africa remains a blight on the planet. Thus, in the Summer of 2005 activist Bob Geldof staged an even more ambitious series of continent-spanning concerts dedicated to raising funds and public consciousness about international debt relief. This expansive four-disc chronicles those shows in one of the most ambitious concert documents ever attempted, capturing all of the highlights (and a few complete artist sets) of concerts in London, Philadelphia, Toronto, Paris, Berlin and Moscow. Underscoring the events' sense of unity, the performances here span both generations and genres, offering veteran rock fans often muscular sets by Elton John (including a woozy take on T. Rex's "Children of the Revolution" with Baby Shambles' Pete Doherty), The Who, Sting (who sharply reprises a trio of Police favorites) and the ubiquitous Paul McCartney. But the highlight of the Jurassic set's contributions are a reunion of Roger Waters and his long-estranged Pink Floyd bandmates on a sonically flawless five-song whirl through highlights of Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall; footage of their rehearsal for the show is contained on the set's equally eclectic fourth disc of bonus materials. But there are highlights here for nearly every taste, be they a fine sampling of contemporary UK and Australian rockers ( Coldplay, Jet, Razorlight and especially blistering performances by Stereophonics and Kaiser Chiefs), a little hip-hop nostalgia (a joyous Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff leading what seems half of his Philly hometown in a goofy singalong of the "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" theme); showy turns by pop-meister Robbie Williams and chateuses Mariah Carey, a rousing set by Black Eyed Peas (featuring Rita and Stephen Marley on a cover of "Get Up Stand Up"). Other one-off duets include Coldplay and Richard Ashcroft doing a fine version of the latter's "Bittersweet Symphony," Stevie Wonder with Rob Thomas ("Higher Ground") and Adam Levine ("Signed Sealed Delivered"), a tender take on "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan and Josh Groban and McCartney and George Michael taking an upbeat turn via "Drive My Car," before Macca closes out the London show by leading its various participants in an obligatory singalong of "Hey Jude." Royalties from sales of the set will go to the Band Aid Trust for the relief of hunger and poverty in Africa. --Jerry McCulley

Open Question: Why does my College Application Essay SUCK?
it's disoriented but it can't be that bad? someone give me feedback? please? Zhen Zhong I often stock myself up with books and movies on a rainy day. They provide an escape to my conscience and keep it busy. However in no means are they ?dream worlds? I slip into when the cold hard world is too much to take. Facing up to one?s problems is the best way to avoid regret and the best way to provide faster release. I always have my own back and a good grasp of reality. I?m quite content with myself and where I am in life. I have a great family, a consoling home, and unswerving friends. I enjoy hanging out and shopping as much as reading and writing. My favorite class in school is Gymnastics where I can loosen up and concentrate on the winning goal. I love my part time job as a coffee Barista for Starbucks, it often reminds me that I am independent and can survive outside of my parent?s allowances. I believe in reason and logic and tradition. I am swollen with pride of who I am. Loosing is never an option I would choose. I try my best to achieve my goal and never let small adversities stand in the way. I am determined because I have motivation. I always have motivation because I have pride and love competition. I don?t deem I will ever loose, and simply repudiate and loath loosing. Playing the violin is both a hobby and an artistic expression; During school I was awarded many orchestra excellence certificates and was in the String Ensemble, National Music Honor's Society: Tri-M and passed the level 6 New York NYSSMA with an A+ with the piece "Hoe Down" by Copland. Aside from my musical accomplishments, I was awarded with Principle?s List and Honor?s Roll certificates. I was in the Mu-Alpha Beta National Math Honor?s Society and the National Honor?s Society. I love the arts, including acting, plays, theater, movies, TV, poetry, stories, fine art, domestic art, modern art, and every other art out there. To put it short, I enjoy the finer things in life. To not have the finer things in life is to not have pleasure and therefore I am determine to be and do the best that I can, provided that I am blessed to have the education and needs that I have. My parent?s have always been an inspiration. Over the years, they?ve managed to own a expensive house in Long Island, (being immigrants themselves and speaking poor English at first) and support a family of 5 with very few times where the wants and needs aren?t met. They have always been there for me and I know I can always count on them. These days, I?m looking for answers to questions. I love learning and learning about what I love. My main goal though is to be wise and knowledgeable. I am fascinated with myself and what I am made up of -why my body and mind functions the way they do. For that reason, the biologic and health fields has a great allure. I believe learning is valuable and beneficial both physically and spiritually. It?s a win-win situation. (more...)

Open Question: Are men naturally more artistically creative than women?
Are men naturally more artistically creative than women? People are always saying how women are more in touch with their emotions, express emotions better, etc. But, I can't think of a more humanly ingenius form of emotional expression, than the arts. And, virtually all artforms today and throughout history are & have been dominated by men. Painters/Sculpters - Impressionists like Van Gogh and Monet. Renaissance painters like Da Vinci and Michaelangelo. Modern pop artists like Andy Warhol & Keith Haring. And even today, in a post-feminist world where women now have more opportunities than men -- men still dominate painting, with artists like Shepard Fairey, graffiti artists like Saber, Banksy, Retna, Mear, Cope2, etc. Architecture - Take a look at this site, of the greatest 20th-century architects & building designers. http://architect.architecture.sk/ ALL MEN. And the top architects today are all men. Don't say "women don't have opportunities" because a woman is more likely to go to college than a man. So, even with the advantage & privilege society gives women, men still dominate. Acting/Theater - The top-10 paid actors in the world: Will Smith, Johnny Depp, Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, Leonardo Dicaprio, Bruce Willis, Adam Sandler, Nicolas Cage, Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell. As you can see, no women made the list. The top producers, directors, and writers are also men. The creative geniuses behind the vast majority of movies, TV shows, and theatrical plays you see are men. Fashion - Yes, even fashion. Although this industry caters mainly to women, the brains and top designers behind most of these lines are men. Firstly, most women's clothing was originally invented by men (and at one time, originally worn by men). My girlfriend has her own fashion blog, where she talks about all the latest fashions. And I notice that at least half of all the women's fashions she features about on her blog are clothing items designed by men. The list of top fashion designers are as follows: Yves St. Laurent, Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, Perry Ellis, Calvin Klein, Russell Simmons, Marc Ecko, Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton, Giorgio Armani, Gianni Versace, Sean Combs, Hugo Boss, Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana, Salvatorre Ferragamo, Guccio Gucci, Dov Charney Music - Virtually all music genres are dominated by men. Everyone from classical masters of Beethoven, Bach, & Mozart, to rock bands like Aerosmith, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, & Metallica, to Hip Hop artists like Jay-Z, Ludacris, LL Cool J, Run-DMC, 2Pac, & KRS-One, to Soul/R&B greats of Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, etc... other genres dominated by men: Jazz, Blues, Country, Techno, Heavy Metal, Reggae, Funk, Disco, Salsa, Reggaeton. The best-selling album of all time is "Thriller" by Michael Jackson. And besides the artists & lead singers being dominated by men, most of the backup musicians that play instruments are male. And I can venture in to other artforms, like magicians, circus performers, dance, etc. -- all where men dominate. And I know one of the feminist responses will be "yeah but women didn't have access to the schooling/instruction that men had to learning the mediums, etc." You do realize that many of these men were self-taught geniuses? Beethoven did not have a teacher or go to any schools. Da Vinci was also self-taught. Rappers do not go to "rap school" either. If we were to assume that women & men are equal when it comes to artistic creativity, then we should've seen just as many self-taught female geniuses as we do male geniuses, without schooling. But we don't. Are males more artistically creative than women? scottishguy: Exactly! As I said before, women now have more opportunity and privilege than men... more women are going to school and are encouraged to go to school. Yet, they are still behind men in the "real world" despite all of this. And men actually score higher on SAT's than women, for the record. Capone: Yes, but eccentricity amongst artists is not exclusive to men. The women that are brilliant in these fields tend to be eccentric as well. Dracula: LOL@ Paris Hilton. Please tell me you're not serious. She's not an "artist". She's a heiress socialite & bimbo, that got famous for giving a guy a blowjob. Oprah is also not an artist, she's a talk show host and a business mogul. Half of your list is of people I've never heard of. But, you should read "The Mrs." post. She said that feminists would begin to list artists -- but for every female artist you list, I can list 10 or more. And all 10 males will be greater artists than the one female artist you listed. So what's your point? Oh yeah the top comedians are male too. Forgot about that one. Men are funnier than women. Dracula: Rap is an art. It takes skill and is a form of expression. You just never really tried listening & understanding it. Kate: Tommy Hilfiger, Puff Daddy and Dov Cheney have multi-million dollar companies. I consider them serious fashion moguls. Donatella's relationship with Gianni is why she became known. She used his name (literally) to get to where she is. And, Yves St. Laurent has been far more influential than Coco Chanel. You said "Gianni is dead", but what difference does it make? So is Coco Chanel. NEXT. Dracula: Oprah is more known for her businesses and show than her acting. Yes, she did do some acting bits, but, if you were to just focus on that -- she is not considered one of the "top" actors in Hollywood. She hasn't done enough to be considered that. As far as Paris Hilton -- I didn't know being in reality TV made you an "artist". She's mainly famous for being a heiress & socialite; her "artist" ventures like that failed pop-album are considered side-ventures. Spuddy: I never once said anyone "invented" fashion. Find where I supposedly said this. I said most of the most notable fashion designers have been men. Are you assuming I know nothing about fashion because I'm a male? How sexist of you. And, Jimmy Choo is a male. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Choo I FORGOT CULINARY ARTS! THE TOP CHEFS ARE MALE TOO! I FORGOT ABOUT THAT! Spuddy: Whoever once said there weren't other designers on the Jimmy Choo's line? I only mentioned Jimmy Choo because he was the originator and he is a fashion designer. You then brought up a woman designer on the line as if that somehow contradicts whether or not Jimmy Choo is a designer. It doesn't. According to my sources, Jimmy Choo still designs. Whether it's for his original line or not is irrelevant. The fact is, he's a fashion designer. You still didn't show where I claimed anyone "invented" fashion. And, why would you assume I know nothing of it? Must be because I'm a male. My girlfriend is majoring in fashion merchandising, so I've gained quite a bit of knowledge from her. (more...)

Open Question: How do you find meaning/deal with this pointless, throwaway society we have created?
Where anything goes, people don't care and are shallow as hell, and life just seems to have no point or soul to anything. Everything is work, the TV shows are generic and suck, and the meaning of life is all but lost? I mean it's stupid, I was even watching TV shows last night like scrubs, and even though I keep reminding myself, "it's just a TV show," I can't help but to notice that the actors only care about looks, their own stupid self-important lives, and pretty much add to the meaninglessness and pointlessness of everything; it's like you're a hospital staff, even though it's a comedy, you act like it's all BS. Same with movies. It's nto really fair to pick on scripted shows/movies, but that's just one TINY TINY example of a HUUUUGE problem. I mean nowadays the average American doesn't care, doesn't live by ANY rules, anything goes, and other people are either in the way, don't matter at all, or if you need something from them, you find a way to get it. There's no more "hi how are you?" and really meaning it, wishing the best for anyone (but yourself); it all seems to be gone. All the guys nowadays want is to be leaders, have money, be in charge, know it all, go on power trips, hot girls to have sex with and then dispose of, the girls want all the makeup, cars, insurance policies, hot men to play around with, and rich men to marry, this society around us, really....is like that, and has absolutely NO meaning or purpose, and then half the people end up on drugs, look at our celebrities, drugs, DUI's, meaningless drama, it all ends up going to hell, a few people die, others end up miserable, it's like 80% of our population is on the road to meaninglessness and hell, and then when some of it actually ends UP turning their lives to hell, they cry it's not fair, oh and that's not even the biggest crime. The biggest is, these same people who DO succeed, end up brainwashing and instilling their value system through the music, the tv, the shows, the movies, the marketing, the businesses, the schools..and it trickles down and affects everyone else/society,...which just creates MORE problems, drugs, mayhem, etc. See what I mean? It's all pretty much meaningless hell, and I've luckilly at least thought it through and realized it but now it's like, what am I supposed to do abotu it? lol. And also, how does one find meaning and deal with everything around us pretty much? It's like, NO I won't conform to the stupid public, rave about the latest fashion or movie, or some other b8llshit. It's all bs. I'm not falling for it. The people on top KNOW these things, they just have the power, so they want to continue making sure everyone else is brainwashed enough so that they keep their stupid power over everyone. WE...the dumb people make these people rich. We MADE Katy Perry, Marilyn Manson, Madonna, and all the other countless of "fools" who are now multi-millionaires. So is there really any hope? I personally don't think so, but hey, it's worth trying. (more...)

Open Question: How do you cope with being open-minded and living in the ghetto?
I was born in Latin America, and I moved to the states like 5 years ago. I'm getting my citizenship soon. My family back in Latin America is lower class. My mother went to college and she used to work as a secretary for a private institution. Even though I was poor I grew up with what some people call "middle-class values". Like you don't spend money that you don't have, independence was always very important, having manners, understanding that wearing expensive sneakers won't fool anyone about my economical background, etc. I'm not saying only middle-class people behave this way, I'm just saying that's usually the label people use. I also grew up listening to Rock, blues and other types of music, saved money and bought my own electric guitar, learned about philosophy while going to school, etc. What I mean to say is that I grew up with an open mind about things. But then we were lucky enough that we moved to the United States, and I was really happy about it. The only problem is what happens to a lot of Latin Americans that moved here from their countries. You end up living in the ghetto. Don't get me wrong, I was living in a poor neighborhood back there, but I had friends in those neighborhoods who were educated, people that were more like me. It's been so hard after I moved here. So many people in the ghetto behave like animals, everybody seems to idolize rappers, and so many people waste their money on stupid shoes and clothing that are so expensive it just doesn't make sense. I had a girlfriend once, but that didn't go too well. She was a nice person, but she would spend all this money on sneakers, plus the fact that a lot of people act in a very rude way, which apparently they don't perceive a being rude. I read a lot about sociology, and psychology, so I understand a lot about American culture. I don't feel like I'm better than the people that were born where I live now, I understand they're just people who have a hard life. And I have no problem with "interracial" relationships, I actually feel sorry for them and wish there was something I could do to stop them from being so ignorant about so many things. But the fact that I feel that way doesn't help me when it comes to make friends or find a girlfriend. I mean, I've been called "******" more than once because I don't wear baggy pants like they do. American culture is so black and white. When I go to free dating websites I usually get matched with white girls, which would be fine by me, but it's such a big deal here. Plus women usually date up, so once you tell them you live in the ghetto that's the end of it. I met Asian girls that I like too, but for some reason they usually go only for the white or the Asian guy only. A have seen a few black and latino girls that I actually liked but then there's always one or two kids and some crazy baby daddy that just got out of prison of something like that. I like America, but I hate the ghetto. I went on vacation last summer, back to my country, and I hooked up with a couple European girls, and my friend moved to Germany thru a program and he has an European girlfriend. Some times I wonder how come some Americans still see themselves as having a freer society than so many countries in Europe. I don't see how I can be offending anybody. My question was deleted before. I'm just asking if there's anybody that's been in a similar situation and how they've managed to turn it into a learning experience. If possible at all. (more...)

Open Question: Does this sound like a good idea for a book? ?
I won't reveal too much, but it'll be called "Dependance Day". It'll be a dystopian novel similar to 1984 by George Orwell. It's about our world completely dominated by an oppressive, tyrannical breed of humans called the "Forns" (I might change the name) who keep the rest of mankind below them thanks to propaganda, fear and making the consumption of alcohol, drugs, fast food and other "modern junk" necessary. Followers of the regime are praised, but nobodyh cares because everybody lives off booze and stimulants and are kept in place by sadistic police forces, yet never revolt because education and propaganda tell them they are perfect and that society is fair and easygoing, even though they are exterminated once they get old or sick with "death-syndrome2 (an unknown, inexplicable disease much like Cancer that kills off random people. Its purpose and cause remain a mystery until the end). The only national holiday and celebration in the society is "Dependance Day", the date when the "master race" people "liberated the world from freedom". Concepts such as religion, art, homosexuality, individuality and war are all inexistent, thanks to indoctrination imposed upon the people. The "master race" humans however are all fit, cultured and wealthy. The plot itself will revolve around a young member of the society who doesn't fit in, who is independant and creative (he accidentally heard a piece of music, which is restricted for the master race, as a young boy, and his remembrance of the tune inspired him) and cynical towards the society. Desperate to escape the world he finds so boring and oppressive, he overhears rumours of a community in the far corner of the world seperate from the society, where the people are artistic and free-thinking yet not members of the master race. I won't reveal much more about the plot: I don't care if what I mentioned gets copied, as I'm quite imaginative and will think something else up if it does (i'm only 15 and have all the time in the world). What I wanted to ask obviously was: do you think it's a good idea/concept? What should I work on? Should I introduce more characters? etc. Thanks. (more...)
