Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events
Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events The characters of Daniel Handler's popular children's book series spring to life in this playfully macabre screen adaptation from director Brad Silberling. Contemporary scoring master Thomas Newman may launch the musical proceedings with the brief, Disney-esque flourish of "The Bad Beginning," but the sound of a needle being brusquely dragged across that record brings us to the composer's true intent: a teasing romp through occasionally dark, rhythmically charged musical corners. Employing his patent take on post-modern impressionism to a greater degree than he did in Finding Nemo, Newman gives a decidedly contemporary spin to the oft-cliched concept of children's music. His score is a an inviting fusion of his tense, ever-inventive, ensemble studio concoctions and a Euro-Goth sensibility inspired by the film's visual sense. Alternately bright and brooding, with a surprise at nearly every turn (not the least of which is "Loverly Spring," a full reprise of the score's creepily saccharine opening song), Newman's score is yet another tribute to his restless, seemingly boundless creativity. --Jerry McCulley

Chicken Little
Chicken Little This soundtrack offers a pretty standard mix of new songs, old chestnuts, and excerpts from the score (here by John Debney). On the new tip, Joss Stone and Patti LaBelle engage in an overheated battle of the divas on CD opener "Stir It Up," a bouncy piece of fluff that sounds more like Aretha Franklin circa "Freeway of Love" than classic soul. Other originals include Barenaked Ladies' "One Little Slip" (this movie's answer to Counting Crows' "Accidentally in Love" from Shrek 2) and the Cheetah Girls' peppy-but-bland cover of "Shake Your Tail Feather." But the real highlights are the songs performed by the movie's vocal cast, which includes Joan Cusack, Garry Marshall, Zach Braff, Steve Zahn, and Amy Sedaris. Their group cover of Elton John and Kiki Dee's "Don¹t Go Breaking My Heart," for instance, sounds as if half of them were drunk in the recording studio (and this is meant as a compliment.) Braff's a cappella version of "We Are the Champions" is smashing and Cusack and Zahn's take on the Spice Girls' "Wannabe" is completely demented. The kids will laugh; their parents will laugh even harder for completely different reasons. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

The Island
The Island After supplying something known as "additional music" to many films since the late 1990s, Steve Jablonsky seems to have become the go-to composer for director-producer Michael Bay. Jablonsky's score for Bay's sci-fi thriller The Island shows the influence of its producer, Hans Zimmer. "The Island Awaits You" sets up the mood, which is oddly muted for a movie directed by explosion-master Bay. Even a track titled "Mass Vehicular Carnage" is merely ominously low-key, oddly sounding like something by dank trip-hopper Tricky. Elsewhere, the electronic number "Starkweather" successfully creates a feeling of oppressive tension before integrating elements of the main theme. Unfortunately, in his effort to avoid big ka-booms, Jablonsky can be overly subdued; while nothing is jarring, nothing makes much of an impression either. Actually, there is one jarring thing on this CD, and it's the Prom Kings' nu metal/funk hybrid "Blow," tacked on at the end like an afterthought. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

The Front Page
The Front Page Howard Hughes produced this first film version of the Ben Hecht-Charles MacArthur play, fresh from its wildly successful Broadway engagement; it's at once a close transcription of the stage piece and, under Lewis Milestone's aggressively inventive direction (which includes using a bouncing camera to underline the rapid-fire dialogue), a typically eccentric, anything-goes bit of early sound filmmaking. Pat O'Brien, in one of his first films, flies through the role of Hildy Johnson, the ace tabloid reporter with dreams of getting married and going straight; sleek Adolphe Menjou is his boss, the wily editor Walter Burns, who's desperate to keep Hildy on staff to cover an upcoming execution. Director Howard Hawks added whole levels of thematic depth and dramatic tension when he made Hildy a woman (Rosalind Russell) in his 1940 remake, His Girl Friday, but the Milestone version has its own gritty integrity and even manages to challenge Hawks in the strength of its supporting cast: Mae Clarke, Walter Catlett, Frank McHugh, Edward Everett Horton, Slim Summerville, and George E. Stone. --Dave Kehr

Open Question: Rune readers. Another question for a beginner?
So I went out and bought some gems last night. They are oval and a very pale pink. I spent most of last night holding onto them and fingering each one individually to help them absorb my energies. So soon I should be able to start painting them. However, according to "Wicca: A guide for the solitary practitioner" by Scott Cunningham I should have twelve stones (although he lists a total of 28 runes between pages 188 & 196), but most of the sets I've have found online had closer to 24 stones. Which is best? Most common? Storing my stones: I will be keeping my stones in a drawstring bag. Does it matter whether the bag is velvet or satin? Does one have more magical properties? Does one protect from outside energies better? Thanks for your time everyone! Light and Blessings! (more...)

Open Question: Second part of my story! How'd i do?
Heyy heres the second part of the story. (heres the link to the first part if you havent read: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AnE3bTgOD83.WYiVZpAvB0Psy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20081221212839AATCYJD ) I turned around and went back from the way i came from....i was walking the empty halls once again.. i guess i'm sorta hoping i'll run into him again if i go this way... he seemed different... like no one else i know.. i wonder why ihave never seen him before.. I entered the library and found a free table and sat down.. i took out my history book and opened it up to page 136 The Life of Anne Boleyn... ahh so thats what her name was.. I started writing my report and got about half a page done.. then i got lost in my thoughts about what had happened earlier.. then it hit me.. I dont even know his name!.. well no use thinking about him now this school has over 2,000 students i'm never going to find him without knowing his name and him not knowing mine... i finished up my report and packed up and walked those empty halls one last time to the main doors. I have to head home now its already 4:00... and i have to prepare dinner and help my younger sister with her homework and do the laundry, then finish my english homework too.. I better get going i have a lot to do.. I hate but love my walk home. An oximoron I know. Its not distance i hate becasue its only a 3 mile walk from the school to home. Its not time, although i do tend to run late, but its only a half an hour walk. What i hate is what i see. Friends, couples, Familys.. Everyone. They all have someone to walk with, to talk to, to be with. Me? Nah i'm always alone. But i guess thats my fault. No matter how hard someone trys to get close i push them away becasue i'm afraid to get hurt again. Damn trust issues. I could fix them if i would just let go but its harder than that.. the one thing i need to let go is still here.. still following me around like a lost puppy dog. worst thing? i cant do anything about it.... I love my walk home becasue it gives me so much time to think, which i tend to need with my mind. And its beautiful. Especially in the fall. My favorite season. The trees usually go orange, red, and bright yellow. Except for last year there was too much yellow for my liking, but it was still beautiful.. I've already passed past the towns local drugstore, the shabby little community breakfast place, walked threw the depressing dark ally that i use for a shortcut across town and past the donut shop. But now, right around this corner and up a little bit is my favorite part. Our community memorial park. i'm not really quite sure who the memorial is for but the place is amazing. so i'm guessing whoever its for must be really important to. I stop in my favorite spot each time i walk home from school, which is practiclly every day since my ride lives in florida for winter, its a beautiful stone fountain that just keeps running now matter how cold it is outside with a wooden bench right in front of it with a name engraved but its been there so long i cant read it. to get here you have to walk on a long gravel path, past a few willow trees and one white birch, and threw some bushes... i guess its not the main attraction of the park to most people, but to me its the best. its my escape i spend most of my weekend here reading. Well i'm here on this bench, my bench, once again. but i cant stay for long, even though i wish i could just sit here forever, i have to go home and do my normal routine. So i get up reluctenly, and go back threw the bushes and past the one white birch and the few willows on the long gravel path, back to the main road, my house is only one block away now. so i'll be there soon.. oh God i wish i didnt have to go home today.. nothings different today than any other really.. but i just dont wanna go home. Okay thank you for reading AGAIN! and there is still more to come.. i guess its gonna be longer than i expected. I didnt really like this part as much as i like the first part but this is more like a gradual upclimb to the next parts and it was more of an info imformer and it'll makes sense later haha... specially that part bout her trust issues. .... OH! and i'm SO sorry for taking so long with it.. just i can only right when i feel a certain way or the voice is way off. but yea haha. But again thank you so much for reading =) P.S bad punction/proofreading i know but give meh a break i write at like 1-3 am haha okay ya nevermind thats still early but hey my grammar sucks what can i say? thank you for putting up with it though <33 (more...)

Resolved Question: First time casting. Which Rune set should I get? ?
I've been wanting to learn how to cast runes. I found a book and stone set at B&N that looked nice, but it was $35-- that's a lot of money. I have found many sets of Runes on ebay that range between $10 and $20. They look nice but I don?t think they come with a guide book and without one, I wouldn?t be able to recognize the symbols. So here are some links to different sets I've found and I'm hoping that someone with experience may be able tell me which is better. Thanks for your time! -Lindsay This book looked really nice and it says it comes with a set, but it doesn?t show one. As this set is used it is very cheap. http://www.alibris.com/booksearch.detail?invid=9709902113&wquery=casting+runes&qwork=2640602&qsort=&page=1 This set is very lovely. It comes with a velvet bag and some kind of guide. The price isn?t great, but better then $35. http://cgi.ebay.com/Natural-Gemstone-Runes-HEMATITE-Runestone-Kit_W0QQitemZ150304025399QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item150304025399&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50 This price is better then the last and it has all I'm looking for, but the stones are not flat which, to me, seem like it could make interpreting difficult. "Now that stone is kinda side ways. Does that count?" or "if I turn my head this way I can see that one. That changes everything!" Stuff like that. http://cgi.ebay.com/MD-AMETHYST-RUNES-25-Elder-Futhark-runestones-silver_W0QQitemZ130256147527QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item130256147527&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A15%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 (more...)

Open Question: Hey, could you read through this? I was wondering whether i could make any changes.?
?Hill creates Hilliard?s thoughts about his imminent meeting with Barton in detail on pages 39 to 41 and 46 to 50, but we learn very little of Barton?s thoughts, except for one line of dialogue: ?I saw your things. I knew you?d arrived.? He hesitated. ?To tell you the truth, I was frightened to death of you!? Using pages 40-41 as a model and also of what you have learnt of Barton?s character and Hilliard?s background, create the episode where Barton enters the apple loft and first sees Hilliard belongings.? Barton slowly made his way up the splintered, wooden staircase, clutching on to the sides he heaved himself up, stretched and struck his head on the rafter. He looked up slightly whilst vigorously massaging his head, and muttered, ?I?ll have to remember that one.? As he stepped up on to the noticeably uneven floor boards, they creaked, a sour scent of cider reached Barton?s nostrils and he creased his forehead. His eyes swept the room and rested momentarily on a trunk. Neatly put to one corner, the tarnished leather trunk sat. A firm lock buckled it tightly shut. The name ?John Hilliard? was engraved on the side of the trunk in faded black ink. A pale cane walking stick with a rounded silver knob was propped up against the murky white- washed wall. Barton walked over to the belongings. He stretched out a hand to touch the walking stick, but hesitantly withdrew. Maybe he was soon to encounter the presence of a more mature man thought Barton. Strict. He hadn?t actually had the chance to reflect upon whom he would have to share the room with. Barton began to feel perceptibly nervous. Barton knew inside that he was not a shy person, yet the lack of belongings of the other had created a barrier of reluctance to meet him. He inched away from them. A candle was rested upon a stained, upturned cardboard box throwing a shaft of light around the room. A dusty armchair was placed in the other corner of the narrow loft. Barton walked across to it and seated himself down. He took out a double folded photograph wallet, with a family picture on one side and just Miriam Barton on the other side. They were all smiling at him. He beamed back at them. He clutched the leather wallet close to his chest. He unstrapped his own case and began to unpack, taking his shaving things out. Coulter had brought up a white, enamel bowl filled with water earlier on. The bowl itself was as big as his own hands when he cupped them together. Barton dipped a finger into the water. It was cold. He began lathering his face with his shaving brush, whilst humming to himself. He could hear the distant booming of rifle grenades, so he stopped and listened intently, rather intrigued. He wiped his face clean on a rough towel and walked over to the elongated window. He reached out a hand to open it and fresh air greeted him carrying with it an aroma of crisp, burning leaves. He looked down upon a fringe of trees studded with rich- coloured berries brimming with juice. A filthy- looking dog was slouched across some cobbles chewing on a bone enthusiastically. Conkers were littered on the ground like pearls of polished mahogany. Autumn. A stone pathway had embedded itself in the thick, long grass. The canvas of a sky was beginning to dim turning into grey slate. The silhouette of the village of Percelle could be outlined distinctly in the distance. Barton had been standing there, perched on the rusty hinges of the window for a while now soaking in the atmosphere, whilst nibbling on a slab of Chocolate Menier, devouring the enriching flavour. The strong perfume of the burning leaves curling with the heat was making him feel rather hazy. He went back over to the armchair, and opened his copy of The Turn of the Screw. For a while he was absorbed by the contents of this novel, but kept getting distracted thinking about his family. His mother would probably be in the kitchen right now. Cooking. Barton?s sister alongside her, sitting on the stool, beside the sink, keeping her mother company. He missed their presence already. He could the hear sound of voices directly below him. He stopped to listen. There were two men. One had quite a deep, rasping voice and the other had a much softer, gentle voice. He felt he was back at school again. He began to drift slowly off to sleep, and started to think about this ?John Hilliard? who he was soon to be acquainting himself with. He felt tense. He swivelled around to take once last glance at the blemished, leather trunk and the walking stick, carefully propped up against the wall, in a very upright manner. Why were there very little belongings, he thought? Even the trunk itself was rather small. No family pictures lovingly placed on the side of his camp bed, or magazines, or newspapers thrown carelessly on to the camp bed. At once Barton heard the ruffled sound of footsteps beneath him. He opened his eye In answer to the first answer..I copied and pasted it from word doc :P and thank you for taking the time to read..much appreciated (more...)
