The Notebook

Based on Nicholas Sparks' novel, director Nick Cassavetes film spins the bittersweet tale of a 60-year romance, as seen from the polar perspectives of its promising youth and the travails of an old age cursed by Alzheimer's. Its soundtrack effectively echoes those polar dramatic concerns, with composer Aaron Zigler's gentle orchestral score largely giving voice to the character's melancholy present, while a rich, well-chosen slate of vintage material by Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller imparts a restless energy to their youth. There's a certain schmaltz to much of Zigman's work here, yet cues like "House Blues/The Porch Dance.." and "Noah's Journey" argue he's achieved something more elusive than mere melodramatic wallpaper with the deceivingly difficult task at hand; it can't be easy to have your work seasoned with the likes of Ellington's sassy "Alabamy Home" and Goodman's still-vibrant "One O'Clock Jump." Sharply contrasting versions of "I'll Be Seeing You" by Holiday and Jimmy Durante bookend the soundtrack, perfectly evoking the story's alternating shades of hope and fading nostalgia and framing Zigman's understated work in the bargain.

The Notebook

When you consider that old-fashioned tearjerkers are an endangered species in Hollywood, a movie like
The Notebook can be embraced without apology. Yes, it's syrupy sweet and clogged with clichés, and one can only marvel at the irony of Nick Cassavetes directing a weeper that his late father John--whose own films were devoid of saccharine sentiment--would have sneered at. Still, this touchingly impassioned and great-looking adaptation of the popular Nicholas Sparks novel has much to recommend, including appealing young costars (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) and appealing old costars (James Garner and Gena Rowlands, the director's mother) playing the same loving couple in (respectively) early 1940s and present-day North Carolina. He was poor, she was rich, and you can guess the rest; decades later, he's unabashedly devoted, and she's drifting into the memory-loss of senile dementia. How their love endured is the story preserved in the titular notebook that he reads to her in their twilight years. The movie's open to ridicule, but as a delicate tearjerker it works just fine.
Message in a Bottle and
A Walk to Remember were also based on Sparks novels, suggesting a triple-feature that hopeless romantics will cherish.

Cinderella (Disney Special Platinum Edition)

Disney's adaptation of the beloved fairy tale became a classic in its own right, thanks to some memorable tunes (including "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes," "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo," and the title song) and some endearingly cute comic relief. We all know the story--the wicked stepmother and stepsisters simply won't have it, this uppity Cinderella thinking she's going to a ball designed to find the handsome prince an appropriate sweetheart, but perseverance, animal buddies, and a well-timed entrance by a fairy godmother make sure things turn out all right. There are a few striking sequences of pure animation--for example, Cinderella is reflected in bubbles drifting through the air--and the design is rich and evocative throughout. It's a simple story padded here agreeably with comic business, particularly Cinderella's rodent pals (dressed up conspicuously like the dwarf sidekicks of another famous Disney heroine) and their misadventures with a wretched cat named Lucifer. There's also much harrumphing and exposition spouting by the King and the Grand Duke. It's a much simpler and more graceful work than the more frenetically paced animated films of today, which makes it simultaneously quaint and highly gratifying.

Open Question: Is this what feminism does to women? Adults playing with fake babies?
To me this is just creepy:
WASHINGTON - Many people like to stop and play with newborn babies, but now some adult women are playing house with fake babies.
Some women are even going as far as taking day trips with the fake babies to the park, out to eat, and even hosting birthday parties for them.
Forty-nine-year-old Linda is married with no children of her own. Now, she says she feels like a mother because she has Reborns -- dolls made to look and feel like the real thing. ABC 7 Talkback:
"It's not a crazy habit, like, you know, drinking, or some sort of, something that's going to hurt you. It's like a hobby.and it doesn't really hurt anybody," Linda said.
These women are paying big bucks for this hobby, from $100 to a few thousand dollars. For Reborn owner Lachelle Moore, the fake babies fill a void.
"What's so wonderful about Reborns is that, um, they're forever babies," said Moore, who has grown children and grandchildren. "There's no college tuition, no dirty diapers... just the good part of motherhood," she added.
In her Kansas City home, Moore even has an elaborate room for the dolls. She organizes birthday parties, bakes a cake and even invites guests.
Psychologists say there could be a problem if and when these women stop interacting socially with others in their life.

Open Question: Fiance is really starting to get on my nerves?
My fiance is really starting to get on my nerves. We've been dating for almost 6 years and recently we decided to go on and get married. I'm 39 and she's 38. She's been married once already and this will be my first marriage. Ok, the first thing that's pissing her off is that fact that I didn't get down on one knee and do the traditional proprsal. But we've been talking about it for months so it's not like it would have been a surprise. The next thing is that I gave her the ring during Christmas and granted it's only the 8th of January and she says she's tired of the girls on her job asking her when we're getting married. Meaning, what's the date. Stop me if I'm wrong but I don't know too many couple that get engaged and 2 weeks later their date is set. But then what's wrong with her just telling her friends, "we haven't set the date yet." The next thing she's complaining about is that when we're out somewhere I'll still refer to her as my girlfriend and not my fiance. Ok, maybe she's a little right about that but who cares what you're called?
Lately we both have been fighting a cold. I lost my job back in December and have been looking for work. Yesterday she took the day off and she literally expected me to wait on her hand and foot. I'm just as sick as she is but she's the woman and I was suppose to pamper her.
Last night the kids had to go to church for an activity. Her two sons and my daughter. So I took them about 5 PM. I had planned on cooking when I got home but when we got to church they had dinner prepared so me and the kids ate there. I texted my girl letting her know that I had also stopped by my mom's house and she gave me some left over fried chicken from Sunday's dinner and I knew I wasn't gonna get home until after 8 so she could warm up some of the chicken and eat that instead of waiting on me to cook something. When I got home she complained that I hadn't even offered to fix her some soup or anything. She was too ill to go open a can of soup and warm it up while I was gone but she wasn't too ill to go outside and move her car. We have 3 cars. Hers and my two. I normally park my second car on the side of the driveway but I had parked hers there because I drove mine and it was in the yard. My girl hates when I put her car on the side. She only wants it parked in the driveway under the carport. She's a girl and wants the special treatment. Ok, when I got home her car was back under the carport but she couldn't open some soup.
She's really starting to get on my nerves. I really think she's a spoiled little princess.
What do I do to get her to understand that a cold is not pneumonia. She had the house to herself to rest quietly for 3+ hours but the minute I got home she lit into me because she said I didn't care about her.

Open Question: Is your City/Town centre turning into a Ghost town?
You are made to feel like a criminal for taking your car into any City/town centre, And IF you can find somewhere to park it you are usually £2 out of pocket BEFORE you start your shopping (Typical parking fee...Like you don't already pay enough money to run your car) THEN there is the harassment from plebby chavs who have nothing better to do than roam around city centres like wild pack animals, When you can shop online from the Comfort of your own home is it any wonder Town and city centres are quickly becoming ghost towns.

Open Question: parents peace corps-Swaziland 1970s-information? help?!!?
Hey, My parents served the peace corps in the 1970s in Swaziland
My godfather was a student of there's who is now in the US with a family and is a Very successful doctor
my parents spent two years there teaching school, my father did metal working/woodworking my mom did reading and other things, my godfather is pure African, My parents have always told me from when I was little about Africa. I'm working on a school report about it now and this report alone is half of my grade, I'm trying to track down photos and information about them and what it was like when they were there.
I'm not sure if I'm spelling this right but my godfathers name is Begamoosa as in beg-a-mouse-a they've always talked about seeing fighter jets flying over with neutron-bombs on them and coming back later with out any bombs.
I've seen slide shows of them in African attire spears beads, what you would see the African hunters wearing in ghosts of the darkness type dress standing with a Family. also the game park having a sing with the number of people killed by snakes(only white people were on the sign) as the school master told them they didn't count their own on the sign because there would be just to many. I would really like to find some photos of them or the school they worked at any information would be great, also I'm not sure the EXACT year they were there, but the king after they left stepped down and let his son into power, also his son (the king) was a student of theirs. this almost history is one thing that I would like to record write down learn as much as possible about it and let others know about it.
My parents went into the peace corps in boulder colorado I believe.
few of the others that went with them got sent home for AIDS/home sicknes and other things. my parents last name is Gossett. also part Cherokee one of the more disliked family's of the Cherokee as I have heard.
thank you for reading if you can give me any information or tips anything at all would be great!

Reflection on Recycling Activity
Recycle. What a vigorous word that never quite pronounced itself in my daily activities, at least not until a month ago. As I sipped the remaining drop of diet coke and mechanically threw the empty container into our overcrowded garbage disposal, the word recycle bombarded my mind. Quite a while back, my family had planned, what seemed like an organized and easy arrangement, to recycle and earn a little cash for recreational activities, but it seems that they, including myself, have become very lazy and unmotivated to go through with the task. Well, I realized that I needed to do something about that.
I began to remember various commercials, which have become increasingly popular, about becoming active in the ?green? community by recycling and saving energy. So, I consciously plowed through our pantry and retrieved a separate garbage bag, proudly hung it on the knob outside our pantry and threw the vacant can into it. With no further delay, I motivated my family into a recycling plan, which involved recycling empty soda cans and paying monthly visits to my father?s company called Bighorn Bolt & Anchor. My father unselfishly let me recycle some usable pieces of steel he had been using for boat projects. Within a month or so, I had obtained over three hundred and sixty four cans of diet coke, amazingly, and about fifty pounds of steel. With my truck loaded and ready to go, I drove down to the Empire Recycling Center near West Park Plaza, and deposited my treasures. I proudly went home with fifty seven dollars in hand. Now having finally recycled, I hope to put my newfound habit to use.
Through this experience, I realized that recycling is a way of life. Once we have made that choice to implement all the steps of recycling in our daily lives, and stick to that choice every single day, recycling becomes second nature to us. Sure there will be lapses; because we creatures have habits. But no matter, we push on. Every small contribution to the recycling movement and the initiative to protect our environment adds up to how our present society eventually shapes our nation?s and the Earth?s future.
As I press the issue further, I have begun to recycle even more products throughout my household, such as light bulbs and newspaper, even though they do not hold a high value in the recycling market. Along with recycling new products, my family and I have also planned to establish a neighborhood recycling program, which involves distributing a separate recycling bin to neighbors, which will be collected each month. Within the course of this experience, a new sense of accomplishment has publicized its way into my life, and even though the activity may be petite and vigorous, there are no regrets. Now that the habit of recycling has pronounced itself into my life, I feel that it will become an unregretful habit throughout the span of my life, and hopefully influence others to follow in the habit of reducing, reusing, and recycling.
Please comment or give me corrections.

Open Question: I think my dog has Kennel Cough?
She has been gagging/hacking all day as if she has something stuck in her throat, and a clear liquid has been coming out of her mouth- almost like she is drooling excessively. She still eats and drinks normally and her activity level is as fast paced as ever. I was just wondering if it could perhaps be something more serious, or is my own assumption of Kennel Cough a pretty sound one? How long until a dog begins to show symptoms after being exposed because the only time in recent memory she has been around other dogs was about a week or so ago at a dog park?
Also, could anyone recommend any home remedies? My vet is out of town, and my dog won't let anyone else examine her. If it could potentially be very serious, I could muzzle her maybe.
I don't know if this is important or not, she is a little over a year old, and a 10lb rat terrier mix.
Well, guess I'll muzzle her and take her to the vet first hing tomorrow. The more I research kennel cough the more I doubt she has it, I think she might have a small object in her throat that I can't see.
