Pikes Peak Route
Pikes Peak Route This video chronicles the history, operations and route of the Colorado Midland with hundreds of rare historic photos. Coverage of the Midland Terminal includes about two minutes of black and white motion pictures from 1929 and about 11 minutes of color motion pictures from 1949. Locomotive sounds and train crew interviews come from a rare 1949 wire recording made on the cleanup train just before the Midland Terminal was scrapped.

The Colorado Midland carried commerce between Colorado Springs and Grand Junction, serving the silver camps of Aspen and Leadville. The Cripple Creek gold camp was served by the connecting Midland Terminal Railway. Passengers were carried to the resorts at Glenwood Springs, Cascade, Green Mountain Falls and Woodland Park. Trains crossed the Continental Divide through a tunnel at 11,500 feet above sea level, a tunnel reached by a spectacular series of loops of track. The winter of 1899 closed the railroad for 78 days.

As a result of government action, the Colorado Midland ceased operations in 1918, just after a new owner had invested millions. By 1921, that owner had given up and abandoned the railroad. This railroad abandonment, the largest to its time, would mark the beginning of the decline of American railroads. The Midland Terminal bought the track that connected its own Cripple Creek line to Colorado Springs and operated trains between Cripple Creek and Colorado Springs until February of 1949.

Resolved Question: Has anyone used a company to assist with the British Three Peak Challenge?
My friend and I are wanting to complete the Three Peak Challenge (climbing Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis in 24 hours) and try to raise some money for charity. We were looking at going with a company that provide transport between mountains and a guide whilst walking as some of the hike is during the night. Does anyone have any recommendations on companies. The cheapest one we've found so far charge £399 each which is a massive chunk out of the money we've raised. :( Cheers for your help (more...)

Resolved Question: Has anyone ever driven down Pike's Peak without brakes? (this mountain is in Colorado, 14,000 feet high)?
A few years ago, my car lost its brakes because I had air in the lines after doing my own brake fluid flush job at home. At altitude the air in the line expanded and my brakes were non-functioning. The pedal went right down to the floor. Also, when I changed my brake fluid, I put the wrong type in and it ruined the rubber seals on the master cylinder, so that also wrecked things. Anyways, it was a nice drive up and the scenery was breathtaking. But the drive down was even more breathtaking. I put the car into LOW (1st gear) in my automatic equipped car and slowly came down the mountain, pulling off to the side pull-off zones to let the other drivers pass by me. I was only going about 15 mph so that I wouldn't "run away" down the mountain. I was just wondering, has anyone else lost their brakes coming down a really steep mountain like this? I was in a 1995 Toyota Tercel with Automatic Transmission. I had one hand on the door handle, ready to be able to jump out of the car at any moment when necessary, just in case the car began to pick up speed and run-away down the steep grade. Lucky for me the automatic transmission didn't have too much slip in it and it kept the car's speed under control really nice. But if I tried 2nd gear instead of 1st gear, I probably would not have made it, so anyone trying what I just did, DON'T USE 2ND! Always stick with the lowest gear possible = 1st gear. And I was a major pain in the butt for the other cars as I was going so slow, so I pulled off at every available pull-off spot and came to a complete stop with my parking brakes. (more...)
