Bryn Terfel - We'll Keep a Welcome

Bryn Terfel is the most recent in a long line of great Welsh singers (and certainly one of the greatest)--a people who proverbially are "born with music in the blood and poetry in the soul." Here, he sings the songs of his native Wales: hymns, folksongs, art songs, tender lullabies, yearning songs of love and homesickness, and heroic, defiant patriotic songs--including the Welsh National Anthem, which opens and closes the program. Terfel's voice, flowing out effortlessly like a golden stream, is phenomenal for its incomparable beauty, its range of dynamics, its inflection, and its intensity; his expressiveness is simpler and more natural than usual, and seems really to come straight from his soul. In honor of another great Welsh tradition, two splendid male choirs accompany him; in the fine orchestra, the English horn and harp soloists are particularly striking. The only false note on this heartwarming disc is the lush, garish orchestration, which runs counter to the ingenuous spirit of the songs and often almost resembles a soundtrack. The prime example is the lovely lullaby that's popular in English as "All Through the Night." Terfel sings it with wonderful simplicity; the orchestration is out of a grade-B movie. No wonder, therefore, that the more magical moments are those in which Terfel sings alone with a cappella chorus, harps, or piano; especially in the quiet, inward songs. The accompanying booklet is done beautifully, with stunning photographs of the Welsh countryside, a brief account of Welsh history and music, and texts in both Welsh and English.

Poems of New York (Everyman's Library Pocket Poets)

New York City has always been a larger-than-life, half-mythical place, and this collection offers an appropriately stunning mosaic of its many incarnations in poetry–ranging from Walt Whitman’s exuberant celebrations to contemporary poets’ moving responses to the September 11 attack on the city.
All the icons of this greatest of cities swirl and flash through these pages: taxis and subways, bridges and skyscrapers, ghettos and roof gardens and fire escapes, from the South Bronx to Coney Island to Broadway to Central Park, and from Langston Hughes’s Harlem to James Merrill’s Upper East Side. Wallace Stevens, e. e. cummings, W. H. Auden, Dorothy Parker, Elizabeth Bishop, Allen Ginsberg, and Audre Lorde are just a few of the poets gathered here, alongside a host of new young voices.
Encompassing as many moods, characters, and scenes as this multifaceted, ever-changing metropolis has to offer,
Poems of New York will be treasured by literary lovers of New York everywhere.

Not Much Fun: The Lost Poems of Dorothy Parker

A succinct, yet enlightening introduction and footnotes with quintessential Dorothy Parker anecdotes and quotes serve as brilliant foundation for this collection of "lost" poems. In fact, they are pieces that Parker discarded as not fit for publication, and Parker enthusiasts will notice that many foreshadow more-polished later versions. Though Parker once described her verse as "horribly outdated--anything once fashionable is dreadful now," it's clear that even her "unfit" works are far from dreadful.

Open Question: my poems(easy 10 points!)?
am a 13 year old girl first of all
imaginary-
i was alone,
without a friend.
i made you up,
straight out of my head.
my fantasies,
my long lost dreams,
concealed in you,
made up by me.
as time passed,
my love for you grew,
the person made up
that nobody knew.
all my day,
all my night,
thinking of you,
we never fight.
i get so obsessed,
it's hard to believe,
your not really there,
an emotional test.
i dont know why,
this could make me cry,
but these thought of you...
need to die!
too much time,
with you in my mind,
i need to be preoccupied.
with something new,
just not you!
as time progressed,
i thought about you
more than i thought about the others i knew.
i know its sad,
it makes me mad.
once dominating my head.
and now you're dead.
my ex-immaginary friend
-holly bessey. jan.6 2008
thats just what i get.
why do i get so stressed?
my life is a giant mess.
everyone else seems fine.
my feelings are hidden inside.
and then there goes the school bell,
now my life is more hell!
no one wants to try,
to see what i have inside.
all the pain they cause
rewarded with applause.
the say everyone has friends.
they say it AGAIN and AGAIN!
but y why dont I have...just one?
ive forgotten the meaning of fun.
people laugh at me.
i only want to be free!
from the terrible things they say.
every single day.
so i hide myself.
from this small...mean town.
full of steriotypes.
haunting me i try to fight.
they see this DUMB, WIERD girl.
taking over my place.
when really i am deep and dominant
ME is left anonymous.
i pretend your watching me
or see me as i write.
i know you will never know me.
and that fills me with fright!
the feeling that im nothing.
i know its far from true.
i want to show you who i am
i know you will nver understand.
i just want to be ME again.
long ago i had 1 friend.
she was all i thought about.
every day and night.
i clung to her much harder
after every time we fight.
now she says she hates me.
and that we never were.
shes just like everybody else
but im still devoted to her!
i still try to be myself.
but ive built these walls.
surrounding my heart.
not to keep people out.
but to see who cares wnough to climb them.
my familey is all against me
i cant be who i LONG to be.
maybe because im gay
they all turn away.
i tried hard to fit in!
but YOU always win!
i live life full of fantaises.
and dreams that may never be.
but still i will hold on.
and still i will be strong.
when i get away.
things might go my way.
i live for the future.
left sick from the past.
which isnt over yet.
but thats just what i get!

color definitions!
red- fire, forcive, rebellious, flames, bright, random - red
blue- innocent, naive, sad, happy, subtle...but attracting, seemingly polar opposite of red. - blue
black- sad, lingering, depressing, posesses every color imaginable. complete darkness, closed in, pessamistic, seemingly negative on the outside...but somehow appealing - black
white - polar oppisite of black. extremely naive like a new born, never experienced anything, ability to change into any other color without affecting the color itself. optimistic, open, free.
fact: when black and white are together they are beautiful, perfection of a color combination. although they are complete opposite...absolutely NOTHING alike they match perfectly...but, when they mix they create gray. the most boring sad depressing color in the world. because when they are alone they stand out as individuals with extreme contrast. mixed they have no...self. they are one. seperate yet together...such as stripes or dots are beautiful. two opposites in harmony together - holly.

Resolved Question: how does this poem make you feel?
I went to a party,
and remembered what you said.
You told me not to drink, Mom,
so I had a sprite instead.
I felt proud of myself,
The way you said I would,
that I didn't drink and drive,
though some friends said I should.
I made a healthy choice,
And your advice to me was right.
The party finally ended,
and the kids drove out of sight.
I got into my car,
Sure to get home in one piece.
I never knew what was coming, Mom,
something I expected least.
Now I'm lying on the pavement,
And I hear the policeman say,
the kid that caused this wreck was drunk,
Mom , his voice seems far away.
M y own blood's all around me,
As I try hard not to cry.
I can hear the paramedic say,
this girl is going to die.
I'm sure the guy had no idea,
While he was flying high.
Because he chose to drink and drive,
now I would have to die.
So why do people do it, Mom
knowing that it ruins lives?
And now the pain is cutting me,
like a hundred stabbing knives.
Tell sister not to be afraid, Mom
Tell daddy to be brave.
And when I go to heaven,
put ' Mom my Girl' on my grave.
Someone should have taught him,
That it's wrong to drink and drive.
Maybe if his parents had,
I'd still be alive.
My breath is getting shorter,
Mom I'm getting really scared
These are my final moments,
and I'm so unprepared.
I wish that you could hold me Mom,
as I lie here and die.
I wish that I could say, 'I love you, Mom!'
So I love you and good-bye.
i got this in an email encouraging people to not to drink and drive and it really got to me. i felt like crying after reading it! what do you think about this poem?
PLEASE note that it was not me that wrote this! i got it in an email!
thanks

Resolved Question: Yup. It's another thoughts on my poem question.?
OK well I don't like this poem as much as the one I put on Y!A a few months ago but I'd still really appreciate any opinions.
Whatever I write it sounds too cliche
Nevertheless, inner feelings are true
Sometimes a storm cloud, sometimes the first ray
All bring me back to rainbow thoughts of you
You've made me see that the past is the past
My future could be so much better than now
You know what? It will, 'cause the spell you cast
Has made them all smile, a line in their brow
Telling you in person may freak you out
With pen and paper, I'm writing it down
You may not know the things I want to shout
Don't feel bad, you deserve the polished crown
As a friend, your highest among the ranks
The only thing I want is to say thanks
Do you think it's too cheesey? I also think I went overboard with commas.
thank you!!

Voting Question: i started this poem for my girlfriend, anything i can add?
it starts of like this: (F.Y.I-- the title is " If You Could See")
If you could see inside my soul
see inside my heart
you would see how much i long for you
whenever we're apart
If you could see inside my head
if thoughts were things to see
you would know how i cherish you
how much you mean to me
Knowing i can talk to you
about anything and everything
and knowing together we will get
through whatever life may bring
I could search the world over
and this i know is true
I would never find a love
like the one i found with you...
-now what do you think i can add to it before my final stanza?
final stanza:
So if you could see inside my head
if thoughts were things to see
you would know how blessed i feel
to have you here with me

Voting Question: This Happened Once Before...No Reply-y-y?
Need help deciding whether this girl is interested in me or not, to me its a guessing game. I have been talkin or trying to talk to her since the beginning of November. She worked with me at the time, I have a new job now. I know she was slightly interested at the time, gave me her number and always flirted. Whenever she was down I brought her favorite colored flowers n wrote her a poem especially for her. Took her out to eat a couple times, than the next day when I told her i would be away for a week she got sad cause she wanted to go out sooner. She works two jobs so she barely has free time, sometimes working doubles. Before I went away for Christmas vacation I surprised her with a present at work n she loved it, I told her I wouldnt be coming back to work there when I return but made it known that I would still like to see her. Now I am still on vacation, return Monday but am a little unsure. The only time I heard from her are when I attempt, by sending her a text askin how everythig is about once a week. If it weren't for me I wouldnt have heard from her on Christmas (she went home for Christmas), and thats the last time I did hear from her... I sent her a message New Years Eve and to no avail...I have a hard time factoring in the gaps we dont speak into whether or not she is still interested. In other words I misread what she does not say and read too much into when she does say something. Maybe I am thinking to much into it, but if someone like another person would they make an effort to keep in touch? Also what should I do when I get back, thanks for taking the time for my long boring sob story lol

Voting Question: I'm having my 17th birthday party and having trouble with invitations?
I'm turning 17 on the 28th, and my party is going to be on the 31st. It's not all that exciting. I'm just having about 20 friends over for appetizers, a movie, and whatever else they want to do (like guitar hero or something).
I wanted to do an invitation with a rhyme or a cute short poem on it. Problem is I can't think of a poem myself. So are there websites that I can find one? Or can one of y'all think up one for me?
Emily, turning 17. Party is chill, at my house. Appetizers and movie.

I wonder if it's that simple?
I am twenty-two, colored, born in Winston-Salem.
I went to school there, then Durham, then here
