Textile Mills and Cotton Plants Illuminated in Vintage Movie: The Greater Goal DVD (1953)
This is one of the more well-made industry films that touts big business as the key to American prosperity, freedom, and social development. In the most high-flown rhetoric possible, the narrator explains how the southern textile industry was creating enlightened industrial progress, "The race to compete has led -- as it inevitably must -- to better mills, better methods, better men, and eventually to a better way of life!" There is a montage of factory shots showing how various types of cloth are made, but the interesting part of this movie is afterwards when we see the mill town itself, replete with happy white workers and their families. We see the town surrounding the mill, "The production of this mill does not stop with cloth. Perhaps its most important product is this (we're shown a suburban street with houses), the comfortable American home. A place and an atmosphere a man can earn for his family and for his future." The picnic, the company tennis courts, and the comfortable working environment are all promoted as the "new way" of American industry, a way where the worker was valued and protected instead of abused and exploited. This is a superb vintage film that divulges the landscape of the textile industry in postwar America.

Voting Question: Tie dying cotton shirts with Food Coloring or Kool Aide?
I've learned that cotton shirts are not easily dyed with food coloring or kool aide, however, I just need these shirts to last a couple hours for a retro/hippie birthday party next week. Has anyone used food coloring or kool aide to dye a cotton shirt? If so, were your results good enough to wear for a couple hours? Thanks!!!

ok so im turning 16 in july n im starting to plan 4 my hopefully PERFECT sweet 16 [never 2 late 2 start early??] well my theme is Ashtin's Retro Night Club...[im a girl] n im into the neon colors n dance clubs right.. well i have quite a few ideas but not sure its enough... im very big into lots of ideas n lots of details.. it counts [2 me anyway] well heres some of my ideas but i need some help with more....

Resolved Question: How can i wear a cotton top as a dress ? Need warm but IN FASHION legwear suggestions? Pics incl?
i have this very long, comfy 70s retro top and but i'd rather wear it as a dress. i am slender so there's no weight issue, i can wear pretty much anything. the top is long enough (mid-thigh) but outside is pretty cold so i need some trendy BUT WARM legwear. what would you suggest ? how can i make it work ?
or should i just throw a long cardigan on top of it and just wear tights for bottoms ?

Resolved Question: how would you define my style?
im just wondering.
i like cotton tanktops and dresses, often layered with long-sleeved shirts underneath in this weather. i have a thing for heavy embroidery, but i cant stand sequins or glitter on my clothes. i love skinny jeans and sometimes wear so lows. i like beaded jewelry; and quirky vintage jewelry as well. still, i have a lot of brand name silver jewelry like chanel. on another note, i wear band and retro t shirts and converses, too. my hair is black (not dyed), layered (but not scene), straightened and a few inches past my shoulders. i also like hoodies and uggs. and i love wearing baggy cardigans with leggings on cold days. lol. i usually wear eyeliner and mascara to school.

Resolved Question: Should I spend 100 dollars on a sweater?
The minus is it just seems like too much money for a sweater, especially considering it's half synthetic (cotton polyester spandex blend).
The plus is it's so slimming and flattering, and a great colour for me. It has a maroon and grey retro 30's stripey pattern and a very stylish wide cowl neck with a nice drape. My other sweaters are more ordinary and baggy and two to five years old.
Should I do it??!!
I'm not a kind of person who would buy something expensive I'm only going to wear a couple of times. I figure I would wear it at least 100 times so it would cost a dollar a day.

Resolved Question: What's my style?
I like the whole vintage look, but not the stereotypical 50's retro look necessarily, more the distressed vintage look. I also am finding that I like the whole grunge look, also going along with the distressed theme. I like some of Abercrombie and Fitch's clothing as well as American Eagle and Hollister's, but not the preppy kind, more the distressed kind. I HATE emo, goth, and preppy looks. I LOVE Urban Outfitters. I really like the whole natural/neutral type of look (don't confuse it with boho) I also like to wear some guys clothing (:(:
Heres an example of what I would wear:
A distressed Abercrombie guy's t-shirt with skinny jeans and a pair of clogs. Or, a distressed forest green tee shirt under a natural-colored sweater with a cotton blue plaid skirt and tweed shoes. Sounds nasty, but its nice. Or, ripped jeans with leather flipflops and a dark colored tee.

Resolved Question: looking for groovy retro furniture in london?
i'm trying to furnish a flat and i really like retro furniture, like 70's boxy, leather sofas. quite a few shops have cottoned on to this being trendy and prices can be sky-high, for example, camden market has a couple of arches filled with amazing furniture but it's hundreds of pounds. does anyone know of little-known shops or areas in london where people won't have cottoned on to 70s furniture being collectible, where i may still be able to find a bargain? thanks y'all!
