Unless you've spent the last few years hiding out in some cave in Tora Bora, you certainly know Bob Rivers as America's funniest song parodist. With such riotous ditties as 'Have Yourself An Ozzy Little Christmas' and the totally tacky title track, Seattle's #1 morning man's uproarious new White Trash Christmas will have you ho-ho-ho-ing all the way to the trailer park. The album is highlighted by 'Osama Got Ran Over By A Reindeer', which was the hilarious holiday hit of 2001 at a number of radio stations across the country. Atlantic. 2002.Atists: Bob Rivers

It's not opera; it's not a pop concert; it's not Broadway. It's all of these and none of them. Once you accept the fact that this sequel to the original blockbuster concert recording is less about music and more about entertainment and the power of musical personalities, you can appreciate what you're hearing as an event--phenomenal and bizarre, momentous and frivolous. This is an occasion to celebrate the voices and egos of three huge superstars, and to have fun listening as Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, and Jose Carreras interact, bouncing lines off each other and playing to the overwhelmingly enthusiastic audience. Much of the fun and flavor of the concert is dependent on seeing the action, though, and without the visuals you notice flaws in the singing much more. Domingo comes off as the more solid performer, and his voice is in far better shape than the other two. But if you crave big, high, and loud--and you don't take your opera too seriously--you'll love this disc. --David VernierAudio CD: Live

This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual "early music" periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing "fa, so la" exercises, which was called "shape note" singing because some places taught singing with notes as shapes--circle, rectangle, diamond, triangle. But it's the music that counts, and there are treasures here. They include two versions of "Amazing Grace," one familiar, one with an unusual melody and a piece called "Blooming Vale" which is as sophisticated as anything on their previous albums. "Shall We Gather at the River" is performed with a clarity and loveliness that makes us forget that it's normally sung as background to movies about the Great Depression. The foursome sometimes sing in rich harmonies and occasionally alone or in pairs or trios. This is glorious Americana and highly recommended. --Robert LevineAudio CD: Import

Even casual jazz and blues fans know those seminal American styles journeyed north from New Orleans and the Deep South, along the Mississippi River. But that tributary's penetration into the nation's heartlands, and its passage through a much broader, more diverse array of cultures, affords a richer portrait of how root musical styles have merged, diverged, recombined, or survived against the potential regimentation imposed by mass media and a more mobile, modern society. It's this latter process that provides the thread for director-producer John Junkerman's four-hour documentary, Mississippi: River of Song, originally broadcast by PBS.Junkerman starts not in the Crescent City, from which African American musical hybrids emerged, but near one of the river's sources in northern Minnesota, winding his way through the varied populations and past a sometimes surprising melange of transplanted European, Asian, and South American musics. From Ojibwa powwows, traditional Hmong reed players, and Scandinavian fiddle groups to forceful gospel choirs, German polka bands, Mexican conjuntos, and alternative rock, Junkerman and his team capture American music beyond the glare of New York, Los Angeles, and Nashville. The pilgrimage does strike special sparks when it reaches the blues, R&B, jazz, zydeco, and Cajun strongholds further down river, yet much of the program's freshness stems from the stopovers that reveal unexpected cultural collisions.
Thrash folk singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco serves as narrator, bringing a warm enthusiasm to her connective commentary, but much of the underlying historical, cultural, and personal insight comes directly from the musicians. --Sam Sutherland

Director-producer John Junkerman provides a vivid, organic portrait of American music and the survival of its root influences in this four-part odyssey down the Mississippi. Although the familiar African American idioms of the Deep South figure vividly in the series' overall scheme, the early legs of the journey offer a welcome overview of other nationalities and traditions encountered along the way. This second volume traces the trip from Galena, Illinois, to Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, reflecting the musical boundaries between North and South, as well as the encounter between rough-hewn rural music and more sophisticated urban styles. Veteran folk songwriter and instrumentalist John Hartford provides a wonderful point of entry. Beyond his formidable charisma as an affable, effortlessly rootsy curator of "old-timey" country music, Hartford also pilots a rear-wheeled riverboat during his summers, and his views of the music and the land are seamlessly integrated. The hardy popularity of bluegrass is exemplified by the Bob Lewis Family, while a nearly forgotten St. Louis soul legend, Fontella Bass, is rediscovered alive and very well as a gospel artist partnered with her mother, Martha. A crack high school marching band, Missouri-based alternative country rockers the Bottle Rockets, and the French New Year's revel of the Ste. Genevieve Guignolee round out this relaxed but engaging ride, narrated by alternative folk star Ani DiFranco. --Sam Sutherland
