City Life - Steve Reich / Ensemble Modern
City Life - Steve Reich / Ensemble Modern Born in 1936, Steve Reich is one of the most significant American composers of the 20th century. Having established a distinctive musical sound early on in his career, within what is known today as the Minimalist School of American composers (or Post-Minimalist, which he prefers), originating from the 1960s after John Cage's experimentalism, he is rightly placed today alongside other major American composers like Terry Riley, Philip Glass and John Adams.

Manfred Waffender's major documentary traces the background to the creation of City Life. Reich masterfully captures sounds from New York City street life with the aid of two sampling keyboards and microphone, forging the noise of the city street into a work for string quartet, wind, percussion and two pianos.

The film culminates in a performance of the piece from the Frankfurt Opera House, with the Ensemble Modern conducted by Sian Edwards.

Steve Reich's City Life was nominated for the Prix Italia and at the Banff Television Festival and Input 96.

Just for the Hell of It/Blast-Off Girls Just For the Hell of It (1968, 81 min.) - Teens run amok in the Drive-In double bill from the incredible Herschell Gordon Lewis! A gang of nihilistic delinquents raise hell in a suburban community by doing whatever they want, whenever they want, Just For the Hell of It! When things get dull, they hop in their '67 Mustang and commit senseless acts of cowardly chaos. "Blast-Off Girls" (1967, 83 min.) - Slimeball manager Boogie Baker tries to turn a small-time teenage rock band into an overnight sensation with the help of pot parties, blackmail, and plenty of Blast-Off Girls in H.G. Steve Reich: Music for 18 Musicians
Steve Reich: Music for 18 Musicians This has to be Steve Reich's most difficult work to perform; but he's done it. Several times. Music for 18 Musicians is for violin, cello, two clarinets doubling bass clarinet, four women's voices, four pianos, three marimbas, two xylophones, and a metallophone (vibraphone with no motor). It's a 1974 composition that focuses entirely on the rich staccato that gives minimalism its unique sound. However, Reich turns all of this into actual music by adding the richness of the metallophone and the women's voices. Whatever else people may have said about minimalism, pro or con, a work such as Music for 18 Musicians demonstrates its legitimacy. --Paul Cook

Reich: Different Trains, Electric Counterpoint / Kronos Quartet, Pat Metheny
Reich: Different Trains, Electric Counterpoint / Kronos Quartet, Pat Metheny Different Trains (1988) will probably go down in history as Reich's masterpiece. And deservedly so. Reich's phase-shifting minimalism is made dazzlingly entertaining in Different Trains, which is scored for string quartet and digitally sampled voices that repeat bits of speech concerning trains and Reich's experience with them growing up. The sinister part here is than some trains carried Jews to death camps. That's here as well. The Kronos Quartet has also never sounded better. Electric Counterpoint (1987) has one guitar--Pat Metheny in this case-- playing to 10 pre-recorded motifs, also on guitar. You absolutely need this. --Paul Cook

Sound Unbound: Sampling Digital Music and Culture
Sound Unbound: Sampling Digital Music and Culture The groundbreaking mix CD that accompanies this book features Nam Jun Paik, the Dada Movement, John Cage, Sonic Youth, and many other examples of avant-garde music. Most of the CD's content comes from the archives of Sub Rosa, a legendary record label that has been the benchmark for archival sounds since the beginnings of electronic music. (For a complete list of audio credits, see below.)

If Rhythm Science was about the flow of things, Sound Unbound is about the remix?how music, art, and literature have blurred the lines between what an artist can do and what a composer can create. In Sound Unbound, Rhythm Science author Paul Miller aka DJ Spooky that Subliminal Kid asks artists to describe their work and compositional strategies in their own words. These are reports from the front lines on the role of sound and digital media in an information-based society. The topics are as diverse as the contributors: composer Steve Reich offers a memoir of his life with technology, from tape loops to video opera; Miller himself considers sampling and civilization; novelist Jonathan Lethem writes about appropriation and plagiarism; science fiction writer Bruce Sterling looks at dead media; Ron Eglash examines racial signifiers in electrical engineering; media activist Naeem Mohaiemen explores the influence of Islam on hip hop; rapper Chuck D contributes "Three Pieces"; musician Brian Eno explores the sound and history of bells; Hans Ulrich Obrist and Philippe Parreno interview composer-conductor Pierre Boulez; and much more. "Press 'play,'" Miller writes, "and this anthology says 'here goes.'"

Contributors: David Allenby, Pierre Boulez, Catherine Corman, Chuck D, Erik Davis, Scott De Lahunta, Manuel DeLanda, Cory Doctorow, Eveline Domnitch, Frances Dyson, Ron Eglash, Brian Eno, Dmitry Gelfand, Dick Hebdige, Lee Hirsch, Vijay Iyer, Ken Jordan, Douglas Kahn, Daphne Keller, Beryl Korot, Jaron Lanier, Joseph Lanza, Jonathan Lethem, Carlo McCormick, Paul D. Resolved Question: Using tapes to make music?
There are a few examples of musicians that have used tape recordings as a musical base, like Steve Reich and Kronos Quartet did in Different Trains or Brian Eno's use of an evangelist preacher. I heard once a British recording of a homeless singing and a cello accompanied him which was great but I haven't found it again. Could you give me some more examples? I didn't know the name so I've already learned something. I'll check on your suggestions. But using another song to make your own is also the definition of a cover. I'm really only interested in using non musical recordings specially when it's actually a document recording. (more...)

Resolved Question: Do you agree that Philip Glass has pretty much altered ALL music we hear today?
I hear the same minimalist themes in car commercials, movies, radio bumpers etc etc etc... and its not as if other contemporaries like john adams, steve reich really compare, i mean philip glass just kept at it over and over and over until his style has left its mark on our entire culture. DO you agree??? I t amazes me --the extent of his influence on popular culture today. (more...)
