The Tiny Perfect Mayor: David Crombie and Toronto's reform aldermen
The Tiny Perfect Mayor: David Crombie and Toronto's reform aldermen When David Crombie won his surprise victory in the 1972 mayoralty race in Toronto, everyone thought it was a victory for citizen activism and for a saner approach to urban development. Was it?

This book examines Crombie's performance on a range of major issues--housing, highrises, downtown development, environmental matters, Toronto Island, subways and expressways. Caulfield contends that despite the efforts of a cadre of committed reform-oriented civic politicians, Crombie's mayoralty largely buttressed the status quo and the old-guard politicians he fought so hard to defeat in the first place.

The Tiny Perfect Mayor is a pointed, critical examination of one of Canada's most prominent civic politicians of the 1970s.

Open Question: I didn't go to prom should I go to my college winter formal? ?
High School was rough for me. Well it was good until junior and senior year. junior year my best friend and i stopped being so close because he got involved with a lot of people that were just no good. In march he commited suicide. Shortly after that my boyfriend since 8th grade broke up with me. needless to say senior year by the time prom and graduation came around i wanted no part of it. my mom was supportive and even took my brother away for that weekend. With my next semester's bill came a calender of events for the spring. I noticed that Feb 5th is a winter formal. I got to a TINY school where everyone knows everyone and their business. I have my group of friends at school but other then that I usually go to the sister campus to have fun and party with. My question is, do i go to the winter formal? My only friends at my campus are guys and it would be wierd to go as "dates" but when i go there the only people i will be around will be some same three guys I am friends with. I want to go because even tho prom isn't suppose to be the highlight of a person's life it's a night to remember. If i do go, do I ask someone from the main campus? Do I ask my ex boyfriend to take me? Do I just go with my few friends? (more...)

Resolved Question: Is it sexy that I'm a writer?
What do you think of this? I'm applying to write for the website phonearena.com... When wireless becomes incorporated into niche culture current events, the foot traffic at a tiny T-Mobile kiosk in Carbondale, Ill mall becomes an inside-information booth. I?ve been in wireless for a while now, and every time I meet anyone, randomly or at work I hear the same question, posed in a formidable manner and presented as if their information acquired will override the information no one truly knows: ?Now that I?m on Verizon can I text other Verizon people for free?? ?Now that Verizon bought Alltel will I have to switch to T-Mobile?? I usually tell them the same answer. I say: ?let me see your phone? and if they show me a handset with the words ?Alltel? on it, I simply say ?you?re on Alltel for now, and that as far as any of us, in the wireless business or not, know thus far.? This merger is a beautiful mess. It has created such a stir, and furthered the impression that wireless companies have absolutely no idea how to run a fair business. The public, at least from the perspective of a salesperson, believes all of us are money grubbing, overcharging, scandalous-seething fat cats. It?s become common to be accused of just seeking commission from a client instead of honestly wanting to help them, and that?s hurtful to someone who actually loves to sell wireless. Yet, on the other hand, the promotion of smaller companies is exciting. I worked at a Verizon Wireless agent for 2 years. I enjoy seeing the potential a locally owned company can have while selling a major necessity. I am a fan of grassroot operations. I left Verizon Wireless after the Alltel buyout to work for a T-Mobile agent. T-Mobile, as of now, isn?t very prevalent in Southern Illinois. With this merger, however, the increased competition between carriers and the population shifting due to their disgust of a major company will make T-Mobile expand. With the multiple towers guaranteed to us in this area, coupled with the fact the only T-Mobile dealer here is a locally owned agent, makes the company exclusively interesting. Within the time I?ve worked with the public peddling cell phones I?ve seen both sides of this mess. While at Verizon the customers were bitter, their bills were ridiculous, their phones were replaced 6-7 times, ect. The people I deal with at T-Mobile (and some of them are the same I had at Verizon) are so much happier, simply because their getting start over with something new. (more...)

Resolved Question: Book of short stories? Lemony Snicket contest? The Sun Bird? Tiny country? Moving Manhattan?
I got this book a few years ago, it is a collection of short stories by various author, for children I thick, seeing as it was in the children's section. On the book jacket there was a story started by lemony snicket, the author of a series of unfortunate events, and the contest was to finish the story, and send it in. I don't think that the jacket would be on the book now, though, because the contest will have already happened. One story in the book I remember bu title, and that was The Sun Bird, which was a bout a group of people who enjoy eating exotic and endangered animals (I cannot remember their formal name). They travel to eat the sun bird, or Phoenix. Another story was about a boy who discovers the village he lives in is actually his entire country, and is shocked. The third I remember was about Manhattan, which states floating away from the mainland... Does anyone know the title of this book?? Or at least know what I'm talking about?? That would be soooooooooooooooooo helpful, THANKS so much!! (more...)

Resolved Question: PLEASE ANSWER! what do you think of this epilogue? any criticism welcome!!!!!!!!!!!!!?
here is a brief and vague summary of my story so that you will understand the epilogue. i will be altering it a bit so that no one can steal it (i know it's a dumb precaution, but whatever. i'm also not implying i'm good enough for anyone to take my story, but again, whatever) a 13 year old girl discovers a curious item while searching through her grandmother's basement. it pulls her into a seperate realm where a mysterious woman grants her a gift. the woman is secretly stealing some of the girls' essence (this is revealed toward the end of the book) when the girl is transported back to her world, she meets an average boy who turns out to be not-so-average. strange events occur, and they embark on a journey to silence the magical woman once and for all. they barely succeed, and dispose of the magical item in the ocean. also do you think i should remove the bit about the box in the ocean...that little paragraph with the fish and yaddah yaddah Foaming waves roiled and slammed against the shore. The sun, suspended high in the sky, glared down at the beach goers, refusing to allow them escape without its red-hot brand. The little girl with the brown curls and the green pixie eyes splashed through the water, carefree and joyous. The boy with the missing teeth and the blue eyes was floating with the current, drifting too far out to sea. Suddenly, he was swimming back to the shore, a bright smile illuminating his face. ?Grandpa! Grandpa! Look! Look what I found!? He emerged from the water, sand in his hair and water dripping down his bony body. He hiked up his swim shorts and tora across the burning sand to his elderly grandfather. The old man was in his late nineties, but somehow still full of life. He sat under a yellow umbrella in the shade, his green eyes matching those of the little girl. He did not speak; he did not force an explanation. Many years had taught him patience. His hands were clasped in his lap. The little boy did not speak either, but displayed a tiny, rusted box on his pruned palm. ?I found a treasure chest, Grandpa!? He exclaimed, crouching down to open it, but the rusted lock would not give way. The boy looked up at him knowingly. ?The pirates must have protected it with magic.? The boy rattled it and listened, satisfied to a tinny clunking. ?Perhaps it is filled with dark pirate magic. I wouldn?t open it,? the old man advised. ?Neither would I,? the little boy replied. He scampered back to the shore and slid the box into the water. The waves carried it out of his range, and the box sunk to the bottom of the ocean. With an inaudible thud, the lock cracked open to reveal another box. This one fell open with the rolling motion of the waves, and revealed a miniscule locket. A curious fish swam by, investigated for a moment, and swallowed the thing in a satisfactory gulp. ?Grandpa, why do you think the pirates got rid of their treasure?? The boy asked as he returned to the old man. ?Oh, I don?t know. But I think it?s time we return home. The sun is too much for this old man,? he said with a chuckle. The old man gathered the young girl in his arms and made his way back to the boardwalk. A young, boisterous man jogged by slowly, music in his ears. ?Hey Rob!? how old do you think i am based on my writing style? actually, morgaine (i think that's how to spell it) yes i did and i would LOVE to have more of your input (more...)

Resolved Question: question about a concert?
ok so i am 13 and me and my best friend (also 13) just bought our tickets for the Britney Spears Circus tour at the Staples Center In LA, for April 17,2009. Now i have two questions: 1. Are our seats bad? here is the link:http://www.staplescenter.com/wide.php?page=event_detail&event_id=648 we are the pink section seat 210 row 3 sat 5&6.... i know it is kinds far back, but like everything else is sold out, and the tickets where 150 each. will we even be able to see her? or will she be a tiny spec in the distance. 2. Will we be ok. It is our first concert alone, she has been to about 7 concets (with parents) and ive been to 3(with parents) and i know the staples center is big, and we are only 13, and we are wondering if we will like get around fine, or if we will like get lost, or drunk britne fans harass us! haha. it isnt really an option for any of of family member or parents to go because (a) they hate britney :P (b) tickets are $150 each. and (c)we already bought our tickets so it would be hard to buy a 3rd, in the seat next to us. THANK YOU happy new year :) (more...)

Resolved Question: I was wondering if you all would read my poem and tell me what you think? It is a poem about Christmas?
Hi everyone I am a person that loves to write poetry and I wrote this poem in my own views of what Christmas is/ I was wondering if you would be so kind as to give me your opinion about it. Thank you in advance for everyone that answers my question. "The Birth Of Jesus Christ" One night over Bethleham a star was shineing bright. Shineing up so high in the sky it was touched by heaven's light. All the animals gathered around to see the new baby sleeping sound. Everyone gathered to see the sight of the glorious event that took place that night. A tiny sweet babe lay asleep in the hay. he is God's priceless love he sent to us that day. As the tiny babe lay asleep in the hay,A star touched by heaven brought forth some holy rays. The people came in one by one, bringing gifts from the heart for the holy one. The gifts that came in were few but some, but the best gift of all was the boy that played his drum. The stable was the only place, for Mary to give birth with God's holy grace. God has sent us a savior for one and for all. His name is "Jesus" that is what he is called. He knocks at your heart saying "please let me in" for I am your Lord, the Lord of all men. Ask for forgivness for all of your sins, and through His Grace they will all turn to be amends. If you follow the Lord life's storms will be mild. For God will take care of you if you are his child. His presents so sweet his light is so mild he will chase away the evil and also the wild. The enemy will tempt you this is for sure,But if you follow Jesus he will keep you secure. His blood and his life he has given for you, for as much as you love him he loves you too. Walk with him, lean on him he will show you the way, to make it threw each dark day, no words are needed there is nothing more to say. What a beautiful gift God gave us on this very special day.
