Kalinka: Russian Folk Songs
Kalinka: Russian Folk Songs Dimitri Hvorostovsky, born and bred in Siberia, has Russian folk music in his soul. So do about 100 million other Russians, of course, but they don't have his magnificent voice. When his artistry is joined with that of the Saint Petersburg Chamber Chorus, the result is hard to beat, especially when the arrangements were made by such composers as Shostakovich and Rimsky-Korsakov. Don't expect happy songs, although some of the offerings on this disc, such as the title song "Kalinka," have their rollicking passages. In characteristic fashion, the lyrics dwell plaintively on laments for lost love or melancholy recollections of the Russian countryside. Unusually for a Russian chorus, the Saint Petersburg ensemble is not dominated by the lower-pitched male voices but by the women, blissfully free from stridency, who swell their cadences in the way so typical of Russian liturgical music. The disc is accompanied by the Russian text and a useful English translation, although both suffer from minor errors. --Ed Killham

Fall Color Trees of the Eastern Forests
Fall Color Trees of the Eastern Forests Part travelogue, part easy-to-digest botany lesson, this video is the perfect primer for any traveler who's planning a trip to the Northeast, whether for the 1st or the 21st time. With soothing instrumental guitar as a backdrop, Fall Color Trees of the Eastern Forests gives no fewer than 45 trees the up-close treatment. Not only will you understand why the seasonal changes are taking place, you'll be astonished at how interesting it can be to note the differences between a linear and an elliptic leaf. In case you get swept away by the beauty of the close-ups and don't catch the name of a particular specimen, a chart of leaf characteristics and a list of the trees, in order of appearance, are printed on the inside cover flap of the video's box. It's a gorgeous private preview of "the greatest show on earth." --Valerie J. Nelson

I was walking through the forest on my way home and it felt like someone was following me. I turned around. All i saw was darkness. I kept walking. Suddenly i here foot steps behind me. i didn't tun around this time. I started to run. I was running as fast as i could. Running through bushes and trees. Suddenly my foot got caught on a tree root. I fell with a thud. I started breathing harder. Frantic, I looked around. No one was there. Then, someone grabbed me from behind and threw me to the ground. I saw a man with dark eyes and sharp teeth. He came closer to my face. He opened his mouth, and then then someone grabbed him from behind and threw him to the ground this time. It was another man, but with a more charming look. Before I could run he said, "Are you ok? Did he hurt you?" I just stared. He tried to help me up but instead I got up and ran. He grabbed me by the arm with a tight grip. "Whats your name?" he said quickly. I answered, "Amy Louise, now just leave me alone so I can go home". I said it kind of mean but I didn't care i just wanted to go home. Well that was the story, but not all of it plz give me a title to IT! (more...)

Open Question: What was this TV show? Urban Legend stories told, real or fake, was on TLC I think?
This show was not Unsolved Mysteries, or Beyond Belief I know. It was where they would tell stories and then say at the end of telling them If they happened or not. They told really famous legends. And right before they went to commercials, they asked a question, and told you the answer when the show was back on. I think it was on TLC, or discovery or something around there. Here are some of the stories I remember on it: A family was on a pick nick, when the grandmother died, so they put her on top of her car, but the car later got stolen. A man finds a rat head in his KFC chicken. A man's car is stolen while he is at a baseball game when the SF earthquake happens, and the car with the thief is crushed under a bridge. A man brings a dog to a Chinese restaurant, an ask if they can watch him, but they mistakenly cook the dog a feed it to the people. A man burns a cactus, and discovers snakes in it. Firefighters find a dead scuba-diver in a burnt tree in a forest. A man takes a cursed rock from an Island, and has bad luck. Can somebody tell me the name of it please? Thanks! (more...)

Open Question: what does the pegasus story mean to you?:D?
Our story begins long ago in the ancient land of Greece, where there lived a young man named Bellopheron. Bellopheron was known far and wide for being the handsomest and bravest youth in the entire land, and a great athlete. He was a kind boy who loved to help others and was loved and admired by all. He was a favorite of the King, whose name was Proteus. King Proteus was a good ruler, but too often unsure of himself. In the kingdom was an evil man named Slymius Criticus who, through deceit and flattery, became one of the king's counselors. Slymius was a coward who was forever criticizing others because he excelled at nothing himself. He was deeply jealous of Bellopheron and feared him, as evil always fears goodness. Whatever Bellopheron did, Slymius found fault with it. Slymius even tried to turn the King against Bellopheron, but for once Proteus did not listen to him, for Proteus was fond of Bellopheron and rejoiced in his accomplishments. Slymius grew desperate and devised a wicked plan to be rid of Bellopheron. "My sire," he said to King Proteus, "The monster Chimera is a scourge upon the land, terrorizing your people. Send Bellopheron to kill Chimera. He is brave and strong. He will be able to rid us of this monster." Now, Chimera was a horrible monster that had a lion's body and a lion's head that roared and spat lightning and smoke. Its tail was a horrible serpent that hissed fire, and growing out of its back was the grotesque head of a goat with horns as sharp as razors which brayed a horrible shrieking wail that would deafen any man. No man had yet been strong enough to kill the monster, and many had died trying. Slymius expected that Bellopheron would meet his death as well. The King knew little of such monsters and trusted Slymius. He called upon Bellopheron and asked him to kill Chimera. Bellopheron put on a brave countenance, bowed low to the King, and said, "It shall be done." But Bellopheron was scared. He did not feel that he was so great a hero that he could succeed where so many others had failed. He did not trust his own powers and was fearful that he too would fail. So he went to the temple of the wise goddess Athena to ask for her guidance. Athena's temple was a dark and mysterious place, with cool white marble walls. The heavy incense and gentle sound of rippling water lulled Bellopheron's senses. He fell into a deep sleep and dreamt that the Goddess appeared to him in a halo of radiance so bright that he could barely look at her. "Bellopheron," said the Goddess, "the only way to find Chimera is with the help of the winged horse, Pegasus. The only way to tame Pegasus is with a magic bridle. And the only way to kill Chimera is with a magic sword. Here is the bridle. Here is the sword. Go to the fountain of Pirene, and you will find Pegasus." Bellopheron awoke and thought "What a foolish dream! No man has ever seen a winged horse!" But when he got up, to his amazement he saw lying next to him a golden bridle of marvelous craftsmanship and a golden sword. When he lifted the weapon and waved it in the air, he could almost feel the enchantment within it. He thought then that his dream must have been real, and this gave him courage. So Bellopheron set off on a journey to find the fountain of Pirene, a famed spot in a distant part of the land. The fountain was set in a secluded forest with green trees, luxuriant grass, and beautiful flowers. As he approached, Bellopheron could see the great winged horse, which no mortal had seen before, drinking at the fountain. Bellopheron crept quietly closer, hoping to surprise Pegasus, but Pegasus suddenly looked up from his fountain and trotted over to him. Pegasus let him put the bridle on without a hint of protest. "This bridle is indeed enchanted," thought Bellopheron. The young man jumped on the horse's back and Pegasus leapt in the air like the most graceful of birds and flew higher and higher. The landscape grew smaller and more distant as they flew, until Bellopheron could almost reach up and touch the clouds. Then Pegasus flew past the clouds so that Bellopheron could see the stars twinkling in the cool dark sky. Pegasus swooped and dived, did figure eights of joy, for he loved flying and adored being led by such a kind and brave rider. Birds flew past twittering, and Bellopheron could barely contain his excitement. All of a sudden Bellopheron heard a faint noise behind him and turned his head. Out of the far distance he saw a black speck at the horizon growing larger and larger as it came nearer and nearer towards them, accompanied by what sounded like a thousand beating wings. (The sound grew louder and became deafening as the object grew larger until he could see that it was Chimera.) The lion's head roared and bellowed, the snake's head hissed and spat, and the goat's head brayed. Three monsters in one, Chimera came charging at Bellopheron with all three mouths gaping wide and screaming, bellowing smoke and fire, ready to tear (more...)
