By quadrupling the number of people behind bars in two decades, the United States has become the world leader in incarceration. Much has been written on the men who make up the vast majority of the nation’s two million inmates. But what of the women they leave behind? Doing Time Together vividly details the ways that prisons shape and infiltrate the lives of women with husbands, fiancés, and boyfriends on the inside.
Megan Comfort spent years getting to know women visiting men at San Quentin State Prison, observing how their romantic relationships drew them into contact with the penitentiary. Tangling with the prison’s intrusive scrutiny and rigid rules turns these women into “quasi-inmates,” eroding the boundary between home and prison and altering their sense of intimacy, love, and justice. Yet Comfort also finds that with social welfare weakened, prisons are the most powerful public institutions available to women struggling to overcome untreated social ills and sustain relationships with marginalized men. As a result, they express great ambivalence about the prison and the control it exerts over their daily lives.
An illuminating analysis of women caught in the shadow of America’s massive prison system, Comfort’s book will be essential for anyone concerned with the consequences of our punitive culture.

Open Question: Help with F1 student Visa and family issues?
I came here a few years ago and I got my F1 student visa for only 2 years even though I was a freshman student. My visa has expired but my university has given a new I-20 uptil my graduation which means I am legally allowed to stay in the country until i graduate. I really want to visit my family in summer but apparently, if I leave the states, i will need to apply for a new visa before I could re-enter and risk the chance of not getting the visa and not graduating. I just dont know what to do. Why am I being put in a situation where I have to choose between family and education? when i spoke with the international student office, they clearly told me I do stand a high chance of my visa being rejected as my brother came on student visa and now he is a legal immigrant and they would assume, i will do the same. The real fact is I love the education here in states, I want to graduate from the US but i dont wanna live here forever. I want to leave after I gradutate but I have nothing to show my ties with my home country. What do I do? Can I send my passport by mail and get my visa renewed before leaving or any suggestions at all?

Open Question: LADIES AND GENTS!!! i need your ADVISE!! please please please!!! x?
hi ladies and gents...happy new year!! first of all if you just want points can you go now please? this is a long post, i would appreciate it if ya took time out and generally gave your advice! thanks a lot, appreciate it!
Me, and my friend went to stay with another of our friends from university (we are english and we study in england), we went to Denmark (my friends family lives there but they are still english). My friend brought along his cousin to stay in Denmark and i fancied her like anything! She didnt know though...
She added me and my friend on facebook before we went out to stay there, so both of us messaged our friends cousin, you know getting to know her etc ...
When I stayed in Denmark with my 2 university friends, and the lady i liked too...i fancied her so much! she was good looking, but it wasnt that it was just her personality, sweet and geniune...
When we went back to england we didnt message each other for a while, she got a boyfriend then split up after like 3 weeks...anyways on facebook, then suddenly we are sending each other essay messages more or less! (because we struggle to keep it short haha) private messages like sooo long, on average 1,500 each! takes me like an hour or so to write them. she says she enjoys writing and hearing about me, you know staying in touch with me...she keeps in contact with my other friend but only small wall posts on facebook, not long messages to each other...
I dont think im bad looking, if i was in her shoes i would think 'this guy aint bad looking, and yet i love writing to him, he listens and takes time to write back...could there be something between us?' do you think she could think that between us? the thing is she is cousins with my friend, who i am at university at..i am going to see her soon, it has been like 5 months since i last saw her, us 3 again are going out to see her in wales (live in engalnd) at her university but i hope im not in the 'friends' zone doomed to stay there, and that she just thinks im a really nice guy friend lol because i dont know what she thinks!! help!!
When i was in denmark i didnt really pick up on any flirting signals, apart from one random touch on the arm when she was speaking to me and i sware she said 'so cute' once after i said norway is beautiful country we should visit, or something like that!
the fact of the matter, we are sending long messages to each other, her longest one was 2135 words! mine was 2500 words! it takes us a while to write back but to write that much to a girl...does she think of me as a friend or something more do you think? i should really talk to her when i see her, tell her how i feel...sorry im going on, really would appreciate your advice...
thanks a lot and a happy new year to all!! x
p.s. i know i shouldnt really post this in this section, but i feel i will get a better, more grown-up response than putting it in singles and dating, thanks a lot x

Open Question: I got a DUI ..... discriminated against !?
Hi I'm 22 I'm very responsible kid I currently attend Yale University.I have my own car, my own apartment, I'm an intern at a local law firm and I am currently a marketing and publishing manager. I have my head on straight, I've always made consciences decisions. I was visiting old High school friends back home in V.A. We decided to drive to Washington that night just to go clubbing. I had 1 beer and one shot before 10 because I knew I had to drive around 5 in the morning after the club closed. That was very little alcohol plus I gave it 5 hours to metabolize. I was perfectly fine was coordinated was not at all showing physical or mental signs of intoxication. But I was pulled over for going 72 in the 65 ..ludicrous then the cop requested if they could search my vehicle. I said I'm a law student I know my rights if you have to ask then that means you obviously don't have probable cause to search my car. Then the copped agreed then his attitude became completely pugnacious and he gave me a breathalyzer I said officer you can obviously tell I'm not intoxicated he said well you should know due to the implied consent law your required to take a breathalyzer then I agreed and blew into it. My alcohol content was .02 more that's less then a child thats been sucking on cough drops. I was arrested over night and my license is currently suspended for 7 days. Do you believe this was fair? Would he have arrested a 20 year old white male for having a damn .02 alcohol level? Do you believe I was discriminated against. Whats our input on the situation?Do you find it funny that must people that are 21 aren't charged with a DUI unless their blood alcohol level is AT LEAST a .08. On the police report he said I may have had a low BAC but I seemed to be affected which was a lie.
I know his has nothing to do with being gay but this is my normal section and I feel comfortable getting answers from you guys thanks.

Sorry for the horrible grammar, I was rushing.
I'm not exactly an English major either lol.
Bull shit ADULTS do not get DUI for 0.02 BAC levels thats the equivalent to 1/4 a beer.
I'f I was a pretty little blonde named britney driving a Range Rover I doubt I would have got arrested for a .02 BAC be real. You can believe we live in a colorblind society but we don't
and when was going 72 on the interstate ever considered speeding come on people are going 85 on the interstate I was in the SLOW LANEEEE !!
I'm not at school right now this is yahoo answer. I wasn't aware I'd have to write a astonishing thesis sorry.

Open Question: Him and this girl? He's hurting bad, help please!?
Well he met her in university, she's a tad older than him, but it doesnt bother him, and he's first year and she's not. She has a boyfriend though in Europe and she lived in middle east her whole life. She tells him she ALWAYS has a good time with him EVERYTIME we hang out. They talk almost every day, and hang out every other day.
Cuddles and holding hands when watching movies, and they walk arm & arm when going around the city. She's very touchy, sweet and somehow a little flirty with him, joking around about being together and stuff like that, he's crazy about her but this boyfriend...
Her boyfriend lives in Europe and she lives in middle east, she lives 5-10 minute drive from my brother so they see each other alot. she talks about him sometimes, makes him feel unconfortable. They have been together for a year. He comes to visit sometimes
How can he find out if she likes him?And this long distance relationship stuff, is she lonely, using my brother, or might she really have feelings. We arent sure if she is happy in the relationship with her bf, she seems happy but doesnt mention anything t my brother. He gets mixed signals. He's confused. And its really hurting him, and i cant stand to see him like this.
Help him please!
All help is appreciated =) Thanks ! xx

Open Question: I want to invite one of my closest friends, a girl to my stag weekend but my fiancee says no way?
I am getting married in the summer and my brother is planning my stag do which is to be a weekend away somewhere like Prague or such.
I am 30 and since I was 7 years old one of my closest and dearest friends is a girl who lived next door to me while I was growing up. I want her to come to my stag do with me as I can't imagine going without her, and it's not really going to be a total booze up, strip club visiting type thing just a nice weekend away with my closest mates.
Anyway my girlfriend asked who was going and when I mentioned my female friends name she hit the roof and said she was vetoing that one.
Now the thing is that my girlfriend has always been jealous of my friend. When I first met my fiancee at university I wasn't really interested her as I was still carrying a big torch for my friend, this went on for a while but once I realized that we were never going to be I let it go and over the years my feelings for her have changed I love her dearly as a friend but know now that she was always right in her view that she and I would not make a good couple.
It doesn't help that she is very beautiful and I think my fiancee thinks I compare her to my friend which I don't, but I think she still feels overshadowed by my friend and as a consequence she has never really got to know her.
Anyway I just don't know what to do my friend is pretty laid back and would probably be okay with not going is she knew it was upsetting my girlfriend and in a way it seems like not such a big deal but I worry about where it will end. Will she try and stop me seeing her altogther? Thats just something I could never do. So I think that maybe I should just lay my cards on the table now so we all know were we stand but I'm worried that this will upset my girlfriend and I really do want to marry her and start a life with her I just don't know whay she is so bent out of shape over my friend. If anything was going to happen between us it would have happened, you know? We have already had 23 years of oppertunity and apart from one night when we were both 14 nothing has ever happened.
So what should I do bow to her wishes or put my own foot down?
Actually thats not true in this case we all get along really well.

Open Question: when will the biggest genocide against helpless poor people in this century stop?
Responding to media reports that Israel had bombed a UN school serving as a refuge for Palestinian civilians, Congressman Dennis Kucinich is calling for a Congressional report on Israel?s possibly illegal misuse of US weapons. His letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice follows.
Dear Dr. Rice:
I am writing concerning Israel?s military offensive against Gaza, which began on December 27th. I support Israel?s security and its right to exist in peace, without the fear of rocket attacks from Hamas. Moreover, I abhor the violence being visited upon the citizens of our firm ally. However, no nation is immune from the legal conditions placed on the receipt of U.S. military assistance.
I believe that with the current escalation of violence in Gaza, a legal threshold has been reached, warranting a Presidential examination and report to Congress. I hereby request an examination of Israel?s compliance with the provisions of the Arms Export Control Act of 1976 (AECA).
While neither the AECA nor the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 (FAA) define ?internal security? and ?legitimate self-defense,? I believe that Israel?s most recent attacks neither further internal security nor do they constitute ?legitimate? acts of self-defense. They do, however, ?increase the possibility of an outbreak or escalation of conflict,? because they are a vastly disproportionate response to the provocation, and because the Palestinian population is suffering from those military attacks in numbers far exceeding Israeli losses in life and property.
Israel?s current military campaign in Gaza has inflicted a significant toll on Palestinian civilians and society. Israel?s recent aerial and ground offensive against Gaza has killed nearly 600 and injured over 2,500. The Associated Press reported: ?children are paying the price? The United Nations has said the death toll includes 34 children? But the broad range of Israel?s targets?police compounds, fire stations, homes of militants, Hamas-run mosques and university buildings?means most shelling is occurring in residential areas.?
The extensive destruction of such civilian institutions violates Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits the wanton destruction of property and collective punishment of a civilian population. There have also been reports of bombings of United Nations (UN) schools, despite the fact that Israeli Defense Forces were allegedly given coordinates of the facilities prior to the current escalation in violence.
The blockade that Israel has imposed on Gaza since 2006 has further exacerbated the extent of collateral damage, as hospitals and morgues have been unable to cope with the magnitude of deaths and injuries as a result of the current escalation in violence and hospitals lack proper supplies needed to treat the injured.
I believe that Israel?s use of defense articles provided by the U.S in the current Gaza military attacks may constitute a violation of the AECA. At a minimum, the conflict is sufficient to warrant an immediate report to Congress as required by 22 U.S.C. §2753. Please contact my office by close of business on January 7, 2009 with the date the report will be submitted.
Sincerely,
Dennis J. Kucinich
Member of Congress
