The Votes That Counted: How the Court Decided the 2000 Presidential Election
The Votes That Counted: How the Court Decided the 2000 Presidential Election
The struggle over the outcome of the 2000 presidential election inspired countless books, most of them hasty political critiques. However, with this book, Howard Gillman had different aims from the beginning: to create a lasting, authoritative document of the 36 days between the election and its legal resolution, to offer an accessible overview of the legal strategies and debates, and to assess the influence of politics and law on the judges who shaped the outcome of this historical controversy.

Open Question: What do you suppose the Supreme Court was paid to put a loser like Bush into the White House in 2000?
Can you imagine how much damage could have been avoided had the votes actually been counted. We might have even avoided a 9/11 attack. It was Bush asleep at the switch that invited our Arab brothers to kick the crap out of us. Thanx Bush - you're almost gone now after stealing the entire National Treasury - and certainly stealing our national honor! (more...)

Open Question: Why is it considered petty of the Republicans to challenge the Coleman/Frank election results?
The Dems challenged the Chambliss election in Georgia and they had a runoff. The Dems in Illinois voted to NOT have a special election to fill Obama's seat because survey's showed the Reps would win that seat since Blago was a Dem and voters were mad...so they allowed the appointment...ultimately of Burris...questionable at best in light of his campaign donations ($20K to Blago) and kickback (700,000 to his firm from Illinois government contracts awarded in last 4 years...since Blago has been in) The Dems in Minn.'s recount actually want to count ballots in twenty-five precincts that would bring the total of votes cast higher than the actual number of people who voted! In Ramsey County, 177 more votes have been counted than people who voted on Election Day. The canvassing board, in effect, is admitting that it is counting fraudulent, duplicate ballots! In some cases absentee ballots, particularly from troops serving overseas, have been counted. In other cases, not. One ballot, on which Franken was crossed out and replaced by "Frankenstein" was counted as a Democratic vote. Apparently, when a ballot was challenged, a copy was made to facilitate examination. But, in many cases, the canvasser failed to label the ballot as a duplicate. Then, in the recount, all the ballots were counted, ensuring that the challenged vote was not only counted, but counted twice. What makes all of this suspicious in the extreme is that each of these errors inured to Franken's advantage and eroded Coleman's election night lead until the Democrat could claim victory. The people of that state care and so do the candidates...I don't determiine what I care about as any barometer of what is important or right. In the initial results, there were no signs of election results fraud, now there are...a good reason for any law-abiding candidate of any party to protest and fight to the end...if only to seek justice for the winners and expose the perps. I would have supported Franken had he actually won...my black mayor (republican) lost his bid for California Assembly by just a few votes, and even though his opponent is a corrupt union-funded dem, I didn't reject her win...even though I hated the smear she launched in the campaign...there were no signs of election fraud. We should fight all election fraud, regardless of the "winner" and we should not "cry wolf" (fraud) when it is just a close election, but not close enough for a recount. (more...)

Resolved Question: Are you for or against the appointment of Roland Burris to Obama's Illinois Senate seat? Why or why not?
I'm totally for it - I've read about his personal biography online, and Burris seems a no-nonsense guy who works hard and doesn't get into scandals, and he's pretty progressive on the social issues (which matters to me) and would be a solid choice for the Democrats. And plus, we don't have a lot of time to waste anyway, and every vote is going to count if Obama wants to pass his economic stimulus bills. So I totally want him to get the seat. Your thoughts, and why? (more...)

Resolved Question: What happened to "count all the votes"?
Remember when this was the mantra of the liberals. Now in MN, there are votes that will not be counted, or have been counted twice. Where is the outrage? Oh, wait, this is a dem we are talking about, I am sure the libs will justify the counting fraud that has gone on. Votes in the trunk of a car, votes not being counted from a heavily GOP area... hmmm. where are the dems screaming about this? They still will not shut up about 2000 and 2004, but now somehow it is ok NOT to count every vote. Is this not true hypocrisy? Ash, facts are facts, Gore went to the courts first in Florida to try to overturn the vote in 2000. Dems in Ohio in 2004 tried to do the same thing. Going to the courts is something the dems started. Open Question: What are your thoughts on the Minnesota Senate race?
If you haven't been paying attention to the last seat yet to be decided in the Senate, here is a quick update. The final count after we have counted wrongly rejected absentee ballots find Franken ahead by about 250 votes. Again this is not a certified result, Franken has not been officially elected yet. According to state law, the election cannot be certified until all legal challenges are resolved. It was no surprise that Coleman filed a challenge today in court. He has two main arguments. He believes that the process used to select wrongly rejected absentee ballots to be counted varied from county to county. This would imply that there were 87 different legal standards by which these ballots were judged. He also claims that some ballots were counted twice (possibly up to 200). When a ballot is not read by the optical scanner, a exact duplicate is made and is scanned. Some duplicates did not exactly match originals and both the duplicate and the original were counted as separate votes in the hand recount. Coleman claims that these are not valid because the original and duplicate do not match. This could actually prove to be very interesting. I want to know what everyone else's thoughts are. (more...)

Open Question: How about we enact laws so that no more "votes" found in the trunks of cars can be counted and for that matter?
any votes found anywhere but where they belong should be counted - and if votes just happened to be "found" the person who was the responsible party for the election be prosecuted with failure to do their job? I am referring to Franken OOY; yes I am that mean, lol. (more...)
