Rockers - 25th Anniversary Edition

Writer-director Theodoros Bafaloukos responded to Jamaica's siren call all the way over in Greece and came to the island to make this 1977 movie about a band of Rasta men/Robin Hoods getting their own back at the expense of those perennial bloodsuckers, the "uptown top rankings," as men of money and position are called in Jamaica. The reggae star-studded cast is undoubtedly the movie's most rewarding feature, though some reggae fans have objected to the demeaning sight of the incomparable late singer Jacob Miller threatening a friend with a knife over a purloined chicken leg or the equally great singer Gregory Isaacs exacting chump change for unlocking a tourist's rental car. However, these and other great reggae figures are also seen here in full and glorious performance at their peak. In fact, this film provides our only extended visual record of Miller's kinetic performance style and one of the best pieces of footage on Isaacs. Although
Rockers doesn't approach the multilayered complexity of
The Harder They Come and it does betray a little superiority now and then to its characters, there are plenty of laughs as well as insights into life at the time for Jamaica's growing Rastafarian movement. Drummer Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace makes an unlikely though quintessentially Jamaican leading man as he moves between wooing the rich man's virginal daughter and making pit stops at the shack he shares with his wife and children. His band of accomplices is priceless, and the scene in which each struts in his own "stylee" to Peter Tosh's "Stepping Razor" is alone worth the price.

The Harry Partch Collection, Volume 1

This newly remastered reissue marks a welcome return to the catalog of the first volume of the classic 4-CD collection that was formerly available on the CRI label. The works recorded on this disc span the first six years of what Harry Partch (1901-1974), slightly tongue-in-cheek, called the "third period" of his creative life. They show him moving away from the obsession with "the intrinsic music of spoken words" that had characterized his earlier output (the vocal works of 1930-33 and 1941-45) and towards an instrumental idiom, predominantly percussive in nature. This path was to take him through the "music-dance drama" King Oedipus (1951)-the culmination of his "spoken word" mannerto the "dance satire" The Bewitched (1954-55), in which his new percussive idiom manifests itself. The three works on this disc show Partch before, during, and after this period of transition. In their quiet, forlorn way, the Eleven Intrusions are among the most compelling and beautiful of Partch's works. The individual pieces were composed at various times between August 1949 and December 1950, and only later gathered together as a cycle. Nonetheless they form a unified whole, with a nucleus of eight songs framed by two instrumental preludes and an essentially instrumental postlude. Although foreshadowed by the dance sequences of King Oedipus, the Plectra and Percussion Dances (1952) are the first of Partch's major works to be wholly instrumental in conception. They stand in relation to Oedipus as a satyr play in relation to a Greek tragedyhence the work's subtitle, "Satyr-Play Music for Dance Theater." He felt that after the prolonged period of composition and production of Oedipus it was "almost a necessity to give vent to feelings and ideas, whims and caprices, even nonsense, that seem to have no place in tragedy." The final work on this disc is Ulysses at the Edge, written at Partch's studio at Gate 5 in July 1955. Ulysses, which Partch describes as a "minor adventure in rhythm," is unique among his mature compositions in that, in its original form, it did not call for any of his own instruments. The version recorded here, for alto and baritone saxophones, Diamond Marimba, Boo, Cloud-Chamber Bowls, and speaking voice, is considered the third version of the piece.

Open Question: Did depression take away a good part of your life?
I call it the 'lost years' of my life. I was under medication, and felt like an aimless zombie. Now I see my peers who have clamoured while I was busy trying to live in a dream world, I feel so behind time.
Has anyone been thru this? considering my crisis years took away a large part (4 yrs?) of my prime young adulthood.. my grades were bad though I was not stupid.. I just was failing through school and life because I didnt have any life left (product of depression). Am so glad I'm out of it now. But it feels like I killed opportunities in my youth.
What say you?
I believe depression is a deep product of an existential crisis. It's telling you to look into yourself, and find your true life purpose. I never thought I would get out of this, but I did, so heads up guys! I have finally found my passion and thus positivity, so am slowly climbing out of it with the light of positivity.

Open Question: I am guy and absolutely NOT a gay. How do you meet other guys?
I am a straight guy, of course.
Please help me out how to meet guys because, this year,
I was elected as a leader of our church's youth choir club and mostly of the youths are males. I want to create a personal relationship with one another to motivate them on joining the club.
I am thinking to say "Hi/hello" to them, but it's kinda awkward! A guy saying "hi/hello" to another guy? They might think that I'm a gay. And i really hate gays! Sorry gays(I don't want to mean to hurt you but gays in our locality are so .... - i don't want to say it!).
Actually, from the day i was born until 2008, i am an introvert, that's why i am very shy especially on meeting new people. Now, as my new year resolution, i want to go the outside world I had enough of myself. I want to meet other people, get into their lives by being a good friend. But how?
Well, meeting new girls, for me, is soooo easy. lol! I learned them from my elder brother. Hehehe... =D
You're all **** thinking that i am gay.
What a dope!

Open Question: Why have religion? What is it for?
I am still confused and searching for answers. I am no atheist. I feel connection to something greater than us. But cold hard fact i also understand and like the fact there are some explanations to the world around us.
It may be because of my youth that i cant focus hard on my questions, that i ask about spirituality, and find answers. Usually answers come quickly and easily but this doesn't.

Open Question: I have an important question!?
I'm doing a curriculum fair project and I would like to do something relating to younger kids and the catholic church...any ideas? Some ideas I had were World Youth Day. An awesome thing would be like an all children's church, but I don't know if there's such thing. Any ideas? thank you!

MY VISION
My vision of the world of tomorrow,
Is one without undue sorrow.
And my vision of the youth of tomorrow,
Is one of immense intelligence,
Which aliens would like to borrow.
To follow my vision of the
Race called humanity,
Is one of final commonality.
As colour, caste, creed and communality,
Will be all lost in eventuality.
Where the mind shall rule,
And the head will be held,
Above the shoulders,
Of each and everyone,
As we shall love each other,
Not be enemies,
Instead we shall inherit a world of peace,
I envision we shall pass on a vision,
A message of eternal salvation,
Of calm and peace, as it was a singular nation.
There will be no wars or terrorists to crack,
There will be neither any nuclear attack.
Nor fear of famine and human disaster,
The mind will only be the human master...

Open Question: What do you think? opinions? poem?
I had to write a poem for english in 55 words that said something about who I am. I was wondering what kind of impression this poem gives. If you care to answer, then that's awesome!
The shy girl
Speaking with her smiles
Looking up to stars
Not people
Falling into darkness
Like snow falls from the sky
A quiet winter night
Drawing inspiration from eternal youth
Not reality
Motivated by the world
In its most ntaural state
Finding beauty
In an ugly place
Foolish to believe the world can change.
I don't mean if it's good or not, just the impression it gives.

Open Question: I know I am smart -- but why are my grades so low?
I have a IQ in the 140 range but my grades are only in the high 70s (B+), low 80s (A-). I used to have ADHD, but I do not think I have it anymore.
In terms of my classes, I am able to sit through them, but a large majority of them bore me. English for example, when we did essay and newspaper analysis, I couldn't stand it. But when I was asked to do a lecture on human nature (as shown in Brave New World), and when I was allowed to do ancient literature for my final project I did quite well. In maths and sciences, I get really bored, and only do my homework for the sake of doing homework (if at all), but the funny this is when I get home I find myself doing research on advanced combinometrics, and watching lectures on neurology, psychology, and quantum physics just to name a few.
I am a social person. I'm very confident, and am actually a public speaker (as I've spoken at several conferences to students, teachers and business peoples about my involvement in activism).
All my friends do is sleep, drink, and party -- yet they are getting higher marks then me. I try to talk to them about any university level subject and they have no idea what I'm talking about. I try to tell them about my philosophical theories of the mind and they have no idea what I'm talking about. I try to tell them about the psychology behind much of the school systems and how they are killing the potential creativity of youth, and they walk away. Ahaha...
Moreover, I am able to easily grasp the concepts in the university lectures I listen to, and the research I do. But some of the high school stuff gets me frustrated. I am a poor math student, but I know my capacity for logical thinking is way above normal... it doesn't make sense
Why am I not doing well in school? Shouldn't I be? I mean, I'm in the gifted program...
I don't attempt to tell everyone I am smart. If fact I try to hide it because if they find out I'm gifted I'll be ostracized. But I only talk to students about high level academics when their interests are relatively in the same subject. But nevertheless it still goes over their heads.
In terms of conduct, I conduct myself very well. I am one of the nicest people in my school, I am a leader in groups, I hand in my work on time... although, I usually don't care much for the subject I am working on.
