The Runner: A True Account of the Amazing Lies and Fantastical Adventures of the Ivy League Impostor James Hogue
The Runner: A True Account of the Amazing Lies and Fantastical Adventures of the Ivy League Impostor James Hogue A classic american story of a homeless drifter who tries to start a new life by applying to Princeton University, based on the acclaimed New Yorker article.

Based on one of the most talked-about New Yorker articles from the past decade—soon to be a major motion picture.

On the morning of March 30, 1988, a police detective named Matt Jacobson arrived at a storage facility in St. George, Utah, with a warrant to search for stolen bicycles. Among the stolen goods and dusty athletic trophies in Locker 100, Jacobson also found some recent correspondence showing that the thief, James Hogue, had been dreaming of a new and better life as a person named Alexi Santana—a self-educated Nevada cowboy who could run a mile in just over four minutes and had applied for admission to some of America's finest universities, including Stanford, Princeton, and Brown.

Thus began a classic American narrative of self-invention that falls somewhere between The Great Gatsby and The Talented Mr. Ripley. Hogue's story—how he fooled the Princeton University admissions department, got straight A's, made the Princeton track team, dated a millionaire's daughter, and was accepted into the elite Ivy Club before his deception was finally exposed—turns out to be both an intensely affecting profile of a dreamer and the limits of his dream, and a striking indictment of the Ivy League "meritocracy" to which Hogue wanted so badly to belong.

Taking off from his widely read New Yorker article, David Samuels adds substantial new reporting, telling the sad story of Hogue's itinerant life after he was expelled from Princeton and providing fascinating new insights into the Ivy League's most famous impostor.

An Inca Account of the Conquest of Peru
An Inca Account of the Conquest of Peru Available in English for the first time, An Inca Account of the Conquest of Peru is a firsthand account of the Spanish invasion, narrated in 1570 by Diego de Castro Titu Cusi Yupanqui—the penultimate ruler of the Inca dynasty—to a Spanish missionary and transcribed by a mestizo secretary.

Titu Cusi tells of his father's maltreatment at the hands of the Spaniards; his father's ensuing military campaigns, withdrawal and murder; and his own succession as ruler. This vivid narrative illuminates the Incan view of the Spanish invaders and offers an important account of native peoples' resistance, accommodation, change, and survival in the face of the Spanish conquest. Ralph Bauer's outstanding translation, annotations, and introduction offer critical context and background for a full understanding of Titu Cusi's times and the significance of his words. Co-winner of the 2005 Colorado Endowment for the Humanities Publication Prize.

Resolved Question: What do you know that these people don't ?
Khabibullo Abdusamatov, mathematician and astronomer at Pulkovskaya Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences: "Global warming results not from the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, but from an unusually high level of solar radiation and a lengthy - almost throughout the last century - growth in its intensity...Ascribing 'greenhouse' effect properties to the Earth's atmosphere is not scientifically substantiated...Heated greenhouse gases, which become lighter as a result of expansion, ascend to the atmosphere only to give the absorbed heat away."[13][14][15] Sallie Baliunas, astronomer, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics: "[T]he recent warming trend in the surface temperature record cannot be caused by the increase of human-made greenhouse gases in the air."[16] Reid Bryson, deceased, former emeritus professor of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, University of Wisconsin-Madison: "It?s absurd. Of course it?s going up. It has gone up since the early 1800s, before the Industrial Revolution, because we?re coming out of the Little Ice Age, not because we?re putting more carbon dioxide into the air."[17] George V. Chilingar, Professor of Civil and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Southern California: "The authors identify and describe the following global forces of nature driving the Earth?s climate: (1) solar radiation ..., (2) outgassing as a major supplier of gases to the World Ocean and the atmosphere, and, possibly, (3) microbial activities ... . The writers provide quantitative estimates of the scope and extent of their corresponding effects on the Earth?s climate [and] show that the human-induced climatic changes are negligible."[18] Ian Clark, hydrogeologist, professor, Department of Earth Sciences, University of Ottawa: "That portion of the scientific community that attributes climate warming to CO2 relies on the hypothesis that increasing CO2, which is in fact a minor greenhouse gas, triggers a much larger water vapour response to warm the atmosphere. This mechanism has never been tested scientifically beyond the mathematical models that predict extensive warming, and are confounded by the complexity of cloud formation - which has a cooling effect. ... We know that [the sun] was responsible for climate change in the past, and so is clearly going to play the lead role in present and future climate change. And interestingly... solar activity has recently begun a downward cycle."[19] David Douglass, solid-state physicist, professor, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Rochester: "The observed pattern of warming, comparing surface and atmospheric temperature trends, does not show the characteristic fingerprint associated with greenhouse warming. The inescapable conclusion is that the human contribution is not significant and that observed increases in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases make only a negligible contribution to climate warming."[20] Don Easterbrook, emeritus professor of geology, Western Washington University: "global warming since 1900 could well have happened without any effect of CO2. If the cycles continue as in the past, the current warm cycle should end soon and global temperatures should cool slightly until about 2035"[21] William M. Gray, Professor Emeritus and head of The Tropical Meteorology Project, Department of Atmospheric Science, Colorado State University: "This small warming is likely a result of the natural alterations in global ocean currents which are driven by ocean salinity variations. Ocean circulation variations are as yet little understood. Human kind has little or nothing to do with the recent temperature changes. We are not that influential."[22] "I am of the opinion that [global warming] is one of the greatest hoaxes ever perpetrated on the American people."[23] "So many people have a vested interest in this global-warming thing?all these big labs and research and stuff. The idea is to frighten the public, to get money to study it more."[24] William Kininmonth, meteorologist, former Australian delegate to World Meteorological Organization Commission for Climatology: "There has been a real climate change over the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries that can be attributed to natural phenomena. Natural variability of the climate system has been underestimated by IPCC and has, to now, dominated human influences."[25] George Kukla, retired Professor of Climatology at Columbia University and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, said in an interview: "What I think is this: Man is responsible for a PART of global warming. MOST of it is still natural."[26] David Legates, associate professor of geography and director of the Center for Climatic Research, University of Delaware: "About half of the warming during the 20th century occurred prior to the 1940s, and natural variability accounts for all or nearly all of the warming."[27] Marcel Leroux, former Professor of Climatology, Université Jean M Science advances through hypotheses based on a set of assumptions. Other scientists challenge and test those assumptions in what philosopher Karl Popper called the practice of 'falsibility.' Trying to disprove hypothesis is what real science is all about. Yet the hypothesis that human addition of CO2 would lead to significantly enhanced greenhouse warming was quickly accepted without this normal scientific challenge. As Dr. Richard S. Lindzen, Professor of Meteorology in MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences said, the consensus was reached before the research had even begun. Adherents to the hypothesis began defending the increasingly indefensible by launching personal attacks, essentially trying to frighten scientific opponents into silence. All four major global temperature tracking outlets (Hadley, NASA's GISS, UAH, RSS) have released updated data. All show that over the past year, global temperatures have dropped precipitously. A compiled list of all the sources can be seen here. The total amount of cooling ranges from 0.65C up to 0.75C -- a value large enough to wipe out most of the warming recorded over the past 100 years. All in one year's time. For all four sources, it's the single fastest temperature change ever recorded, either up or down. This was for 2007 and when the 2008 mean temp came out it was down again. I would like to see the names of all the pro global warming scientist that belive it is caused by humans. Resolved Question: i guess i just need opinions?
My boyfriend and i were living in Colorado temporarily. We got in an argument one night because the bank account was overdrawn. Because of the volume of our voices someone in our apartment complex called the police. My boyfriend was then charged with 3rd degree domestic violence. There was no violence just an argument between a couple. I left the apartment to avoid further fighting. When i returned i was questioned by the police. I had a rug burn on my arm from the couch that had nothing to do with him. They asked to take pictures and tryed telling me that i had finger marks on my neck because he choked me. I refused pictures because the only reason they tried was to make there case which is false in many aspects. I explained to the officer that i am fair skinned and when i get upset i get all blotchy and red and tend to scratch and pull my hair and things like that. I recently found out after one of his court dates that the police report says that he hurt my elbow and neck. I did not give that info to anybody because as i said before that wasnt the case. He has been to 2 court hearings so far and has plead not guilty. In our case there was no domestic violence just a neighbor that we obviously bothered with our noise. He now has two more court dates one in march that i am sopenad to testify. The problem is i have nothing to testify against but because of what the police wrote down it will be my word against theirs. Any advice????? (more...)

This information is taken from their annual reports. An annual report is a summary of a company?s financial results for the year along with its current financial condition and future plans. This report is directed to external users of financial information, but it also affects the actions and decisions of internal users. A company uses an annual report to showcase itself and its products. Many annual reports include attractive photos, diagrams, and illustrations related to the company. The primary objective of annual reports, however, is the financial section, which communicates much information about a company, with most data drawn from the accounting information system. The layout of an annual report?s financial section is fairly established and typically includes the following: Letter to Shareholders Financial History and Highlights Management Discussion and Analysis Management?s Report Report of Independent Accountants (Auditor?s Report) Financial Statements Notes to Financial Statements List of Directors and Officers This appendix provides the financial statements for Krispy Kreme (plus selected notes), Tastykake, and Harley-Davidson. The appendix is organized as follows: Krispy Kreme A-2 through A-17 Tastykake A-18 through A-24 Harley-Davidson A-25 through A-30 Many assignments at the end of each chapter refer to information in this appendix. We encourage readers to spend time with these assignments; they are especially useful in showing the relevance and diversity of financial accounting and reporting. Special note: The SEC maintains the EDGAR (Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval) database at www.SEC.gov. The Form 10-K is the annual report form for most companies. It provides electronically accessible information. The Form 10-KSB is the annual report form filed by ?small businesses.? It requires slightly less information than the Form 10-K. One of these forms must be filed within 90 days after the company?s fiscal year-end. The judge has said i can have 4-6 week long visits per year. I have read the eckert case wich the illinois supreme court established as criteria to remove a minor child, and beleive the judge has slighted the imortance of me being a part of his life and his quality of life without me. The mother has not looked into cheaper housing here in the chicagoland area or any local schools. Can i appeal her decision in a higher court? Please help my sons psycholgical and emotion stability is at stake, and this will affect him forever. i have made every visit and pay 200 dollars a week in child support and always have paid. the judge says i am an example of what a good father is in the state of illinois so how can she grant this request? I think i can drive at least 10 hours a day, considering i bust my butt at work 8 hours a day i can sit on my butt for at least 10 :) Also are these google estimated times accurate? i am going to have my dog with me so i have to account for stops walk her and let her go to the bathroom... any suggestions or from people who have made the road trip from east to west or west to east? should i stick to this 5 day timeframe or just hang out in the citys i stop in and have a leisurely route? (more...)
