Pearl Harbor: Uss Utah & Uss Arizona
Pearl Harbor: Uss Utah & Uss Arizona To call Pearl Harbor a throwback to old-time war movies is something of an understatement. Director Michael Bay's epic take on the bombing that brought the United States into World War II hijacks every war movie situation and cliché (some affectionate, some stale) you've ever seen and gives them a shiny, glossy spin until the whole movie practically gleams. Planes glisten, water sparkles, trees beckon--and Bay's re-creation of the bombing itself, a 30-minute sequence that's tightly choreographed and amazingly photographed, sets the action movie bar up quite a few notches. And in updating the classic war film, Bay and screenwriter Randall Wallace (Braveheart) use that old plot standby, the love triangle--this time, it's between two pilots (Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett) and a nurse (Kate Beckinsale) who find themselves stationed at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, during what they thought would be a nice, sunny tour of duty. Then, of course, history intervened.
br/> For the first 90 minutes of the movie, Affleck and Beckinsale find a nice, appealing chemistry that plays on his strengths as a movie star and hers as a serious actress--he gives her glamour, she gives him smarts. Their truncated romance--the beginning of which is told in flashback so we can get right to the point where he has to leave her to go to England--works, thanks to their charm. They're no Kate and Leo from Titanic (a strategy the film strives hard toward), but they're pretty darn adorable in their own right. Hartnett, as the not entirely unwelcome third wheel, squints bravely but makes only a slight dent in the film. Everyone else in Pearl Harbor--from Cuba Gooding Jr.'s brave navy seaman to Jon Voight's able impersonation of FDR--is pretty much a glorified walk-on, taking a backseat to the pyrotechnics and action sequences that keep the three-hour film in fairly constant motion. But when that action does take hold, Pearl Harbor is quite a thrilling ride. --Mark Englehart

Land of the Red Rocks: Utah, Arizona, and Colorado
Land of the Red Rocks: Utah, Arizona, and Colorado Splendidly colored and fantastically shaped, the red rocks of the American Southwest dominate this 51-minute tape as they do the Four Corners area. Narrator Roy Conrad begins at the beginning, with the Earth's formation, and then lands viewers in modern-day Sedona, Arizona, to start the tour, aided by a series of unidentified tourists, park rangers, and apparent experts. Each area is identified by map and then visited by the camera, with considerable time spent at the enormous artificial Lake Powell, created by the building of the Glen Canyon Dam. Next stop is Utah's Canyonlands, and Zion and Bryce National Parks, the latter known for its "hoodoos"--humanlike figures of pink rock. In a remote pocket on the floor of the Grand Canyon, viewers meet a Native American tribe who operate a lodge and campground. In contrast, Colorado's Mesa Verde offers stunning remains of the cliffside apartments that supported more than 400 Anasazi people before they mysteriously vanished. Viewers get a look at some of the 15,000 petroglyphs decorating rocks within the Albuquerque city limits, and then it's back to Sedona for spiritual quests. It's a whirlwind tour that will leave armchair travelers wanting to see more. --Kimberly Heinrichs

A Video Postcard from The Grand Canyon
A Video Postcard from The Grand Canyon The lonely; towering buttes and surreal rock formations; which lie within the Navajo Nation's Monument Valley Park and in Canyon de Chelly National Monument; are familiar Southwestern icons. See the many mesas; buttes and arches that were sculpted through time. Marvel at the ancient dwellings and drawings; witness the sun's spectacular effect on the landscape; and see snow draped over the ageless sandstone pinnacles. Some aerial views give a unique perspective of the terrain. The Native American flavor of the musical background compliments the scenery. Put this DVD in a computer to run the Tourmaps.exe program for a virtual tour of the state and see maps to some other amazing destinations in Arizona.

Open Question: Which route from Los Angeles to Salt Lake for least snow?
I need to drive from Los Angeles to Salt Lake area a week from tomorrow and am scared of driving in snow, because of this I need to know which of the following 2 ways would but me in snow for the least amount of time. I have the option to either leave from LA and drive the I15 way through Arizona and Nevada or option 2 is to drive from La to Sacremento (where family lives) and then take the I 80 to SLC. I know heading to Sac will take longer but it would be worth it if there is less snow the rest of the way to Utah. PLEASE HELP!!! (more...)

Resolved Question: Which state would be better for me? Arizona or Texas?
So right now I'm living back in Massachusetts. Due to circumstances I may be moving to Maine. Hopefully that's only temporary. I hate the snow. I've also lived in Utah and South Carolina. Eventually I'd like to settle down in Austin Texas or Phoenix Arizona. Both seem equally appealing. Austin because I'm a musician and Arizona due to the dry weather and desert landscape. The dry weather helps because I'm severely asthmatic. So what do people think? I've worked mostly in call centers and a homeless shelter. For fun I like to do the music thing, play a ton of poker (and maybe find somewhere I could go to card school and work as a poker dealer?) work out and do some gaming. I'm a really laid back person and I get along with mostly everyone. So given all that, which do you think would be more suitable? Keep in mind I don't mind living a very quiet simple lifestyle. Cheaper housing would be ideal. Mobile home parks are fine. I'm not too picky. Thanks a ton in advance. (more...)

Open Question: Should the Arizona Cardinals just forfeit and save their frequent flyer miles for next year............?
I'm never usually EVER this confident in my team, I didn't even talk trash before the Bama-Utah game, because I kinda knew Bama wouldn't show up. The Cardinals couldn't beat my high school on the east Coast, and the Panthers are coming off a bye, getting healthy. Resolved Question: Does anyone see the difference between Israel and hamas?
Gaza War Diary III: If Mexico shelled Texas, like Hamas shells Israel By Bradley Burston Analogy One: A fanatical religious party wins a string of elections in Mexico's northern states, then stages a civil war to drive out the federal government and take full control. The party's charter demands the return to Mexico of the occupied territories of California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Texas. Firing homemade rockets and more advanced projectiles smuggled in from Iran and China, the party's gunners can hit a total of one of every seven Americans, or 43,598,000 people, in a broad swath which includes Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, Albuquerque, Austin, San Antonio and Houston, and Las Vegas. In all of these areas, pre-schools, grade schools, and universities are all forced to shut down. Families sleep in bomb shelters, and return to them several times a day during air raids. Businesses are shuttered, and the economy shuts down. ______________________ Analogy Two: A man comes into your home. He has a gun he made himself. He points it at your family. He fires, but misses. The gun has little accuracy. He fires repeatedly, missing again and again. You have a much better gun, made in a real factory. It is in the drawer in the bedroom. Demonstrators in London and San Francisco - who are distant relatives of the gunman - stage a protest, calling you a murderer and demanding that you keep the well-made gun in the drawer because it would be a disproportionate response. The man with the homemade gun, it turns out, is a religious fanatic who lives across the street. You were once his landlord. There is much bad blood between you. He races back across the street. He has a larger weapon that he smuggled in through his basement. He shoots from behind his younger son. He wounds your daughter. You take out a rifle. You aim for him and hit the son, killing the boy. The demonstrators are now calling you a Nazi and chant "Slaughter the Landlord!" [In his defense, the neighbor explains that you have kept him and his family locked in the house, and have at times, failed to pay his water, gas and electric bills, causing them to be sporadically turned off. This is some years after the neighbor send out his older son, nicely dressed, to knock on your door. Your older daughter opens the door. He greet her politely, and presses the detonator on a homemade bomb.] ______________________ And finally a word about... Analogy Three: Gaza as the Warsaw Ghetto Jew-haters the world over adore this one. It solves a number of problems at once: It denies and diminishes and exploits the Holocaust, does disrespect to Holocaust victims and survivors alike, alleviates European guilt over complicity with the Nazis, alleviates American guilt over inaction in the face of the annihilation machine, misrepresents both the cruel reality of the Gaza Strip and the cruel reality of the ghetto, dismisses the humanity and the vulnerability of the million Israeli Jews and Arabs within rocket range, and ignores completely the role of Hamas, the Islamic Jihad, the Popular Resistance Committees, and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, in having sent thousands and thousands and thousands of rockets and mortars into Israel. As a bonus, pro-Palestinian demonstrators in San Francisco [where else?], referencing the the Warsaw Ghetto analogy, recently beat up a small number of pro-Israel demonstrators, reportedly shouting "Slaughter the Jew" at them in Arabic. Open Question: So all you people that are so critical of Israel..how you answer this.?
All I keep hearing is how Israel shouldn't protect themselves because they are on Palestineian land. So answer me this.. what makes you any different from them? Where do you live? West coast? New Mexico? Arizona? Utah? Texas? If you don't call yourself a hypocrite.. then when do you plan on giving this land back to Mexico? What about you in the Plains, northeast, and most of the south? We need to give that land back to the Native Americans don't we? Umm didn't we take that land from them? How are we all going to fit in the Louisana purchase land? So if Mexico attacked the US.. wanting some of that land back.. we should just sit down and redraw the US maps?? Now how is this any different that what Israel has done? You still think they have no right to defend themselves? i'm not swapping Israel from Palestine. Don't try to twist words. what I'm saying is would you be opposed to the US defending the southwest from Mexican attack? what about Native American's wanting their land back? You don't think we should defend? just give the land back? if you think we should.. that is hypocrisy. (more...)

Resolved Question: Why should English NOT be adopted as the official language of the US?
I am writing a 6page paper where I discuss both sides. Currently, I have an amazing section for why we should have English as our official language, but I fall short in explaining why we should not. I was thinking of discussing reasons such as - Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and California were part of Mexico and therefore, we should not REQUIRE them to speak English - it goes against what our nation stands for-- freedom and the such but neither of these are good arguments! Please help!! (more...)
