Open Question: How much, is too much exercise for St. Bernard pup?
....meeting a litter of St. Bernard pups at a local rescue this weekend. Will only adopt if we connect with a pup BUT would like to know how much exercise is TOO MUCH for a Berny pup. Our current dog is 35-40 lbs and a lab "mix" whatever the "mix" is, it's HIGH energy and we are wondering if it would be too much for a Berny (with the breeds "hip issues"....) Seriously though, our dog (only 9 months old) would NEVER sleep if she wasn't sent her bed (we crate trained her) over night.... (more...)

Open Question: We just rescued a 1 1/2 year old male St. Bernard. He seems to have been abused by a male prior to adoption. ?
He barks at any male. Even when the male just leaves the room and then returns. He paces and will even jump over things if he feels trapped. He will bark at the TV when a male actor comes on. He will also not take treats from males, only females. After a few moments with the male he will be ok. This is a rescue, and I can return him if I can't work this out. If anyone can offer some advise I would appreciate it. (more...)

Resolved Question: Advice needed; city terrorized every New Year's Eve by alcoholic Saint Bernard...?
"Brandy" was trained as a rescue dog in the Alps, and does love the schnapps and the cognac; years ago she was turned loose by her owners and now lives in the nearby woods, where she usually causes no problems. New Year's Eve, however, is a different story. Tomorrow, as people fill the store parking lots with their liquor purchases, they will be keeping a sharp lookout for Brandy, but it will do them no good---this is one crafty canine! Before they realize what has hit them, Brandy will come barrelling out from the snowdrift she was hiding behind and tackle them, before running off with the liquor. She also leaves slobber puddles for the unwary, who slip and fall helplessly, while she gracefully leaps over them, snatching the shopping bags in her jaws as she passes....all of those year's treading dangerous Alpine peaks has forged this dog into a world class gymnastic fur ball, and no one can stop her! The police have tried everything, but Brandy outwits them; her heavy fur makes her invulnerable to even the most deadly bullets---that is, when she doesn't smack them back at the officers with her dextrous tail! She is excellent at crafting snow too, and many times the officers have come back to their squad cars to find them encased in a frosty prison, which they have to spend hours digging it out from. There just is no matching wits with her! There is nothing worse than seeing the city bums running for their lives, shopping carts in a hurry in front of them, chased by a fearsome Saint Bernard with its tongue lolling in the wind, anxious to get at their quarter-filled bottles of Thunderbird and Night Train! I know that it will be an uneasy holiday, with everyone on the lookout for the sight of those paw-pad prints in the snow. What can we do? (more...)

Voting Question: How much does it cost to Show a Saint Bernard?
I want to get into showing, I have always adored every animal but dogs above all! I have grown up with Saint Bernards, but they were all rescues we fostered and adopted from a saint bernard rescue like 10mins from my home. Ever since I was 15 I always wanted to start showing Saint Bernards, but my mom said we couldn't afford it. I live on my own now, and all the dogs we had are staying with my parents I saved up a total of $5,341 to get a show potential Bernard puppy form a repeatable breeder. But what else does it cost? I am in college to become a animal cruelty officer, so I know now isnt the best time but in a year or so. How does showing a Saint Bernard cost all in all???? Resolved Question: My rescued saint wants to be left alone. She is a 3 year old st. bernard. She enjoys being loved on, but ?
likes to be alone. She tends to want to be in a room away from everyone. She likes to just hang around outside. I walk her and try and give her lots of attention, but she doesn't even want to lay in the living room when I watch tv. She will come to me to get a nice pet then she goes on and does her own thing. Is this normal? Is something wrong with her? I've been patient and thought maybe it was because she was in a new home, she has livened up a little bit, but not much. All the research I found on st. Bernard's say they love attention and like to be with their people why is she so different? How can I help her start to enjoy being with her new family. I have had her for about 6 months now. Resolved Question: I have a 3 year old st. bernard. She was rescued about 6 months ago. I've researched the breed and know they?
are very lazy. My saint tends to sleep most of the day. Even when my other dogs are playing she will usually just lay there and look at them. She loves to go for walks and car rides and usually I will try and get her to run around the house. Other then that she just sleeps and lays around the house. She has been to the vet and is healthy. I don't mind her slumber activity I just feel like maybe I'm not stimulating her enough. She is walked daily and loves to lay outside in the cold. My question is for those of you who have owned a st. is this normal? Am I not doing something to make her happier? I think maybe because of my other dogs I assume she needs more activity and running about. Is there something saints really love to do other than sleep? I love her and just want her to be happy. barry was a famous St. Bernard that worked as a mountain rescue dog. He lived at the monastery at the Great St Bernard Pass near the Swiss-Italian border and was responsible for saving over 40 lives Barry was an expert rescue dog well versed with the rescue drill and amongst his famous rescue adventures there is this famous story about a young boy who was found stranded on an icy ledge, all covered with thick snow under an ongoing, heavy snowfall. It was not possible for any man to climb that icy ledge, but Barry braving all adversity crawled inch by inch to the injured boy. As the drill has it, Barry started licking the boy's face but the snowfall was too heavy and the ledge too difficult to climb for any monk to reach the boy. So, there was no help coming. The boy, however, woke up due to Barry's warm licks and wrapped his arms around Barry's strong neck. The dog pulled him carefully and bravely from the ledge and brought him to safety. and.. balto who led his team on the final leg of the 1925 serum run to Nome, in which diphtheria antitoxin was transported from Anchorage, Alaska to Nenana, Alaska by Train and then to Nome by dog sled to combat an outbreak of the disease. if you do not know about either dog please do not answer. and please stick to the question and dont answer with togo or any other dog not that i have anything against them.
