Silent Film about the Virtues of Beer Drinking: For Good Living DVD (1937)
Silent Film about the Virtues of Beer Drinking: For Good Living DVD (1937) This silent film explores the manufacturing process, and virtues, of beer in the early 20th century. The video possesses great camp value: through bizarre text boxes one speaker extols the healthiness of drinking large amounts of beer! But, as with most silent films, the most striking aspects of it are the beautiful moving images of now historical brewing facilities. For Good Living is the perfect film for people interested in home brewing, classic brewing, or just the history of beer.

Voting Question: Is Viacom being fair demanding 22% to 36% rate increase on it's 19 channels to Time Warner cable customers?
These 19 Viacom channels include MTV, Comedy Central, Spike TV, TV Land, and VH1. Even though ratings for these have fallen, Viacom wants a big 22% to 36% increase in the rate they get from Time Warner Cable and their subscribers, reasoning that customers spend 1/5th of their time watching Viacom channels, but Viacom's rates comprise less than 1/5th of subscribers' total cable bill. In other words, Viacom is claiming to have been undervalued so long, that the time is now to adjust their price up to where it should have been all along. This increase is THREE TIMES what Viacom previously agreed to in the rate contract they signed with Time Warner. So Viacom wants to break their contract to hold Time Warner ransom for more money, and is threatening to make all those 19 channels go dark tonight at 12:01 a.m. Jan 1, 2009, if Time Warner doesn't relent to the big increase. Does this sound really fair to you? Viacom has been known to be very aggressive negotiators and has pulled dramatic stunts like this in the past. I know this as an industry insider and corporate lender to numerous media companies. Viacom's negotiations with the big corporate banks were different than those with cable operators, but it was clear, they felt they were the 800 pound gorilla in the market and could command from vendors and others, whatever they wanted. It was their whole strategy for acquiring channels, consolidating market share, and increasing their negotiating power. There is nothing illegal with this as long as there is not TOO much industry consolidation such that it could be considered anti-competitive or nearing an oligopoly (anti-trust lawsuits would follow). Actually, I suspect one may be brewing from this latest standoff. I'm also a Time Warner subscriber and while I don't want these channels to go away, I also don't like being held ransom when Viacom wants to break it's contract and play power politics to squeeze us for more money. If they felt they were so undervalued back when they signed the original rate deal, why didn't they speak up then? A deal's a deal! It's not cable subscriber's fault that Viacom's ratings and ad revenues have dropped or that they were not as rate aggressive as they could have been when they negotiated their original deal with Time Warner. This feels much like the "Bailout Deal" for Wall Street where average taxpayers are being tapped to pay for the bad judgement of big financial companies. When is this madness and irresponsibility on the part of not-so-bright senior management going to stop? Do you support the position here of Viacom for 22% to 36% rate increases above the contracted rate increase? Or do you support Time Warner trying to hold the line for subscribers and who is the second largest cable operator in the U.S.? (more...)

Resolved Question: Did I paraphrase correctly? If your an english teacher/professor or just really good at writing please help??!?
Ok I am doing a research paper and I would like to know if the paragraphs I fixed if they are paraphrase enough. Also should I change anything or take anything out? Thanks. Original information same as on website: Starbucks Corporation is a worldwide coffeehouse chain based in Seattle, Washington. Starbucks is the largest coffeehouse company in the world, with 15,012 stores in 44 countries. Starbucks sells drip brewed coffee; espresso based hot drinks, other hot and cold drinks, snacks, and items such as mugs and coffee beans. Through the Starbucks Entertainment division and Hear Music brand, the company also markets books, music, and film. Many of the company?s products are seasonal or particular to the devotion of the store. Starbucks brand ice cream and coffees are also sold at grocery stores. In the 1990s, Starbucks was opening a new store every workday, a speed that was persistent into late of the year 2000. Domestic growth has since slowed, although the company continues to expand in foreign markets and will open a net of 900 new stores outside of the U.S in 2009. The first location outside the United States and Canada was established in the 1990s, and they now make up one third of Starbucks? stores. By late March 2008, Starbucks had more than 16,226 stores worldwide, including 11,434 stores located in the United States. On July, 1, 2008, the company announced it was closing 600 under performing company owned stores and cutting U.S expansion plans among growing economic uncertainty. On July 29, 2008, Starbucks also cut almost 1,000 non retail jobs as part of its bid to re energize the brand and enhance its profit. Of the new cuts, 550 of the positions are layoffs and the rest are unfilled jobs. These closings and layoffs have effectively ended the company?s period of abundant growth and expansion that began in the mid 1990s. The original Starbucks was opened in Pike, Place Market in Seattle, Washington in 1971 by three partners: English teacher Jerry Baldwin, history teacher Zev Siegel, and writer Gordon Bowker. The original Starbucks location was at 2000 Western Avenue from 1971-1976. That store then moved to 1912 Pike Place as of today it is still open. Entrepreneur Howard Schultz joined the company in 1983, and after a trip to Milan, Italy, advised that the company sell coffee and espresso drinks as well as beans. The owners rejected this idea, believing that getting into the beverage business would distract the company from its most important focus. To them, coffee was something to be prepared in the home. In 1987, Starbucks opened its first locations outside Seattle at Waterfront Station in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Chicago, Illinois, that same year. At the same time of its initial public offering on the stock market in 1992, Starbucks had grown to 165 outlets. The first Starbucks location outside of North America opened in Tokyo in 1996. Starbucks entered the U.K. market in 1998 with the achievement of the then 60-outlet, UK-based Seattle Coffee Company, re-branding all its stores as Starbucks. By November 2005, London had more outlets than Manhattan, a sign of Starbucks becoming an international brand. In 1999, Starbucks experimented with eateries in the San Francisco Bay area through a restaurant chain called Circadia. These restaurants were soon turned into Starbucks establishments. In April 2003, Starbucks completed the purchase of Seattle's Best Coffee and Torrefazione Italia from AFC Enterprises, bringing the total number of Starbucks operated locations worldwide to more than 6,400. On September 14, 2006, competitor Diedrich Coffee announced that it would sell most of its company owned retail stores to Starbucks. This sale includes the company owned locations of the Oregon based Coffee People chain. Starbucks has changed the Diedrich Coffee and Coffee People locations to Starbucks as of summer 2007, although the Portland airport Coffee People locations were excluded from the sale. Starbucks' chairman, Howard Schultz, has talked about making sure growth does not weaken the company's traditions and the common goal of the company's leadership to act like a small company. In January 2008, Chairman Howard Schultz resumed his roles as President and Chief Executive Officer after an eight year hiatus, and replaced Jim Donald, who took those posts in 2005 but decided to leave the company in late 2007. Schultz's main challenge is to restore what he calls the "distinctive Starbucks experience" in the face of rapid expansion. analyst believe that Schultz must determine how to contend with higher materials prices and enhanced competition from lower-price fast food chains, including McDonald's and Dunkin' Donuts. Dunkin' Donuts is an international donut and coffee retailer founded in 1950 in Quincy, Massachusetts by William Rosenberg. In 1946, William Rosenberg founded Industrial Luncheon Services as a company to deliver meals and coffee break snacks to customers in Ok since it didnt all show up go to my other question similar to this its shorter. 7.) Coors Brewing Company and its 5-year literacy campaign commissioned a poll of 1000 adults to promote national literacy. Voting Question: Why does owning a tech company seem gay. No matter how rich it makes you?
Is it just me or does owning a company like Google, Microsoft and any tech company seem gay for a man to start or own? Seriously. Now owning a manufacturing company, or a beer brewing company, I can see that as being manly. But for some reason not a dot-com, or a pc maker or something like that. No matter how rich it makes you. It just doesn't seem manly. (more...)

Resolved Question: Unique names for a Coffee Shop?
As a college internship project, a group of friends and I are starting up a small coffee shop on campus. We have the basics down but we are having a hard time coming up with a unique and catchy name for our coffee shop. We of course thought of the obvious ones, but these were all taken by other area businesses. Daily Grind Common Grounds Brewed Awakening The Bean Company Here's a little more information about our business. We are located on campus, our store will feature comfortable seating (chairs, couches, bistro tables) as well as computers, newspapers, and magazines for student use. We are located in Northeast Wisconsin, Green Bay to be exact (We thought about Frozen Beans for the name, but thought that portrayed the wrong image). Any name ideas or other thoughts on the business are welcome :) (more...)

Resolved Question: I am a wedding and portrait photographer & I need advise from a commercial and fine art Photographer. ?
I am a wedding and portrait photographer and I need some advise about my first commercial/fine art job. I was contracted by a local brewhouse to shoot the brewing tanks for the purpose of artwork for the walls of the brewhouse. I agreed to do this at no charge and I will provide 10 of the 16 - 20X24 prints that will be displayed on the wall. In return my name and/or web address will be displayed on every print & I will retain all rights to the photos. And he will have a price on every print in his brewhouse, when they sell we will split the sale price minus the cost of the print. * The first question I have is; How much should I charge for the print? * The next question I have is that now he wants the photographs on his web site. He does not mind linking to my site. I know I want my shots on his site for the publicity however I would very much like to recuperate some of the cost I will be coming out of pocket for the prints for his walls. What is the normal procedure in this case? * Lastly, the manufacture of the brew tanks now want to buy the photos for there web site and I have no Idea what to charge them. I have 50 very good edited pictures of brew tanks. Should I sell them to the tank company as a lot? Or should I price the individual pictures? What should I charge? All suggestions and advise are greatly appreciated. (more...)

Resolved Question: XXX stock company issuing new 21 million $ offering?
After purchasing 1000 shares of XXX, company now selling $21 million worth of common stock, Series 1 and Series 2 Warrants. Obviously, the company, due to the crash, is needing money and is selling these 10.2 million shares of common, 7.68 million Series 1 warrents and 7.68 million Series 2 Warrants. My question: Is this sale by XXX to 'selected institutional' investors diluting the stock and lessening it's value? In other words, printing paper stocks like the FED prints paper money.. making the paper less valuable to me, the buyer. Is this offering a 'red flag' signal of bankruptcy brewing within the company and the possibility that I might lose my investment capital? Or, is this a common practice when the market reaches such a low point as it has lately? ABC is highly rated in it's field, but as with 99% of today's stocks, it's present price is very low. Any insight you may offer will be appreciated. (more...)

Resolved Question: Where can I find a coffee shop that uses a clover machine?
I know Starbucks bought the clover brewing company, but none of my local Starbucks have the clover machine, and all the people who work there just look at me with a blank stare if I mention the word 'clover'. They have a press release on this page: http://www.starbucks.com/aboutus/pressdesc.asp?id=848 But no information as to when specific markets will get them. I don't even care if its a starbucks or not, I just want to try a cup of coffee made in this thing, but I can't find one! I'm in Tampa Bay, FL. Help! Ha, well - I answered my own question. The Starbucks page has a search and you can add the clover as criteria. http://www.starbucks.com/retail/find/default.aspx I guess I'll leave this up in case anyone else is wondering about it. Ok, well, Starbucks has no stores in FL that have the clover, apparently. I guess the question is still open. Any clover brewers in the Tampa Bay area? (more...)
