My kids and their 3 friends play outside and come in and out (to get more toys or drinks or bathroom, etc.). Do you just teach them to wipe their feet? or do you make them take their shoes off? Or do you have a special way of handling this? Like rules about coming in and out? I feel like I have to vacuum 3 times a day just to keep up, so I give up and my carpet is a mess. Here's the scoop on the kitty poop. Literally the day after we brought Eme home from the Humane Society she was droopy eared and lethargic. Throughout the day she got worse so I took her to an emergency vet (as it was a Sunday). She had a high white blood cell count and fever and they needed to keep her overnight to give her fluids. The next day, she was better better so we brought her home and she was on Iams low residue food and antibiotics for 10 days. Around day 7, she was no better and had diarreha worse and had bright red blood in it so we took her to our regular vet. Again, high temp, high white blood cell count, an overnight stay at the vet. The vet suggested that perhaps the antibiotic was too strong for her little system (he is a naturalist) so we took her off the antibiotc and put her on probiotics and vitamins and started her on Hill's Prescription Diet id (very bland prescription canned food designed for kitties with intestinal difficulties) We also did a fecal test that revealed no parasites, totally normal. Ten days later, still diarreha, decide to do a more full fecal test (read: expensive) only to discover a certain enzyme whille normal was abundant in her digestive track so she was placed on penicyln (sp?) for 7 days. Still no effect, diarreha remains. So, as a last resort, the vet suggests trying steroids, a common treatment for cats with irritable bowel syndrome (although usually never for kittens - highly uncommon) so here we are, 6 days into Prednisilone steroid, no effect. Still diarreha. If she eats something random (like pizza last night left on the table) she gets really bad diarreha that is very mucoid. She is still growing and seems healthy otherwise so other than ruined carpets (which if we weren't so in love with her would be a 'last straw') I'm out of money, out of ideas, so is my vet. She can't possibly go on like this, can she? Can I? (incidentally if she goes more than once in the litterbox she leaves me a present on the floor) She was born on 8/8/08 so she's close to 5 months now, we got her when she was 10 weeks old. Please help...I thought cats were supposed to be easy... She's only been on Iams low residue (for the first 15 days) then when the diarreha got worse and the blood showed up we switched to Hill's Prescription id which she has been on for almost 2-1/2 months now. I have 5 & 7 yr old children so every now and then something is left out (like the pizza). But they know about her condition and really try to watch it. She is a little piggy though and will literally eat a tomato if it drops on the floor, I stay at home so I am able to feed her 3x a day. Oh yeah, we've maintained the probiotics and kitten vitamins for the last 2-1/2 months and will continue those... In answer to the question about Giardia - she had a "Microshuttle Ova Parasite Exam" (as described on the bill) which is supposed to be a full parasite screening which came out negative (I'll have to confirm about Giardia being covered though) Then when that came out normal we did another test called "Culture Sensitivity" (which was twice as expensive) that was sent to a lab at Texas A&M to have a full workup on enzymes etc. She's been tested for FIP/FELV and every other commonly known disease and has come back negative. I just moved in with my boyfriend. He lives on a small farm. I'm a city girl and kind of a neat freak. I don't have to have the house spotless or anything like that but I do like it clean. The problem is with all the chickens and turkeys running around the yard we are always tracking dirt and poop in the house. Luckily the house has no carpet but it is a constant sweeping and mopping only to have chicken poop tracked right back in. I have an area that I can make a sort of mud room?
