Open Question: Question about editing certificate?
I graduated from college about one full year ago, and despite landing many job interviews for entry-level editorial jobs I have not yet gotten a job. Right now I'm interning with a literary magazine and am going to enter the University of Chicago editing certificate program. My question is this: Does anyone know if an editing certificate program is helpful for landing jobs? I'm just not sure if the job outlook for editing/publishing jobs is so bad that maybe I should start training for a technical career of some sort. I'm putting a lot of hopes that I can get great training/a career network through this editing certification, but I'm just wondering if anyone here is really in-the-know about whether editing careers are even feasible right now. Thanks for any help you could give me! (more...)

Open Question: Is there a such thing as to many degrees?
I am currently a psychology major and I will receive my bachelors in about a year and a half. Then after I graduate I want to enroll in an accelerated Bachelors of science in nursing program at a local university (12 month program). Also I want another degree or certification in some other field (i am unsure which one) maybe speech pathology. I feel that since everything is so bad with the economy and people are having a difficult time finding jobs and losing jobs I want to be safe and always have a career and options. Am I being to cautious? (more...)

Open Question: Job/Skill/Career Poll?
Completely random..but I wanted to ask this in a section where I felt there would be more educated adults...rather than a bunch of teeny-boppers ;) 1) What do you do for a living? (job/career) 2) What degree/certifications did you need to do it? 3) How long did it take you to get those degrees/certs? 4) Do you enjoy it and does it pay a fair living? 5) What lead you to do it? 6) Did you happen to get a degree in one thing and take a job in something that didn't relate..if so..why? 7) How old are you and how long did it take you to get where you are? Ha..I wonder how many people will answer #7 honestly ;) (more...)

Open Question: Do women feel comfortable with male aestheticians?
For years, I've been thinking about a major career move. I have this idea of becoming an anti-aging specialist. I've discovered three different schools and or courses that would help me achieve this goal. I would have to become a qualified personal trainer from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, go to school for aesthetics (figured Skin Science in Utah might be the best choice) and receive a certification from the American College of Anti-Aging Sports Medicine. With all of these combined, I'd plan to open my own practice. Rather unique, because I actually have a passion for health, fitness, skincare etc. One Problem! How do women feel about having a male aesthetician? No waxing or make-up, although that's in the curriculum, but I'd be more concerned with doing facial services, skin evaluations and various other spa treatments, along with doing personal training sessions, and teaching fitness classes. The idea is to help others maintain and preserve their natural beauty without drugs or medical procedures. In my mind, this could be really exciting, and an extremely lucrative business. I just want to know what the women think, considering spa and wellness is a female dominated industry. Be honest. (more...)

Open Question: What is it like being a CNA?
Ok, so I would like to go to school to be a CNA this winter, and hopefully go on in the future to be an RN or PA (for PA school you need a certain number of patient contact hours, so I would need to be something like a CNA or LPN before I could be admitted to PA school). I would like the CNA certification so I can earn some money and get some experience before I start school. But it seems like everyone I tell my plans to replies that all I'll do as a CNA is change diapers all day long! Now, I'm sure that's part of it, esp. if you work in extended care (personally I would prefer a hospital setting but will take what I can get). Now, I know working in this field means you have to deal with the gross stuff, and I'm prepared to do that, but what else does a CNA do beyond this stereotype? I'd especially like to hear from someone who is a CNA in a hospital setting, about what your day is like! PS I already have a degree in education but want to make a career change (more...)
