Living in Indiana and having lived in Missouri I have always wondered why the dialect spoken here as well as much of the lower Midwest and Midsouth is called Southern English if it is not limited only to the south? In Indiana, even northern Indiana, in most of Missouri, Kansas, Central and Southern Illinois, parts of Iowa, Southern Ohio and Pennsylvania and even part of Nevada and Colorado people speak with a drawl. People usually mistake me as being from Texas or Tennessee even though I am from Indiana. In cities like Kansas City and Indianapolis people have a strong "drawl". We call it "country" and not "southern". I don't notice any difference in the way people talk in Indianapolis and Nashville. The sitcom "Mama's Family" was based out of Kansas City, MO. That's really how people talk in Kansas City and in Indianapolis too. Where I do notice the difference is in the Deep South like the lower half of Mississippi or Alabama and all of Louisiana. Those people truly have a Southern Accent where they don't pronounce the "r" and say "po" instead of "poor", etc. So why is the English dialect spoken in the Midsouth and lower Midwest referred to as a Southern Dialect if it is not only spoken in the south but in a large part of the Midwest? I'm really uneducated in this area...so...here's what i know. I'm not really sure exactly what i want to know, either... my wage is $7.50 an hour working in Denver but by the time i get what's mine, it's $6.30. I know some goes to the city and some to the state. is this considered "income tax"? what if i'm not a resident of Colorado? I've only been here four months and i plan on going back to Georgia next summer. my boyfriend doesn't have taxes taken out of his paycheck because he's a student. is this just full time students? if i give my old clothes to the salvation army i get a receipt because the donations are tax deductible. My mom makes about 25k yearly before taxes and has one dependent. Should i give her the receipt? What exactly is "filing your taxes?" do i have to do it? what's a "tax return" by the end of the year i'll have made about 5k, having only been employed the same number of months. will i get money back from the government? will i owe them more money? also, if i inherit part of a relatives estate (around 20k) next year, is that taxable? by how much? should i wait then, to donate my stuff to the salvation army until next year so i can write it off? i'm not my mother's dependent, my little sister is. i'm not in school and i'm 19, so i think she can't declare me as a dependent. Right now I attend University of Illinois at Chicago, this is a very science oriented univeristy and I major in Electrical Engineering, my gpa is roughley 3.0, I got a 30 on my ACT and I will finish up my sophmore year may 2009. Currently im a little depressed of this midwest weather, at one point in my life I lived in Colorado Springs and it was heaven on earth compared to Chicagos weather. I love this city and all, and i'm not against populated areas I just really wish the weather wasn't so gloomy it depresses me, compared to how I feel when the sun is shining. If anyone can give me a solid school with a good engineering program, in a city or town that is not crime ridden(Orlando, miami, etc) that would be awesome. Now i'll put up a list of things that would make it spectacular -not a low income area -tuition per year including board under 25k not including board under 20k -obviously it can't be too elite, because I'd like to get accepted -Not necesary but a solid plus if it is by an ocean -friendly area, with nice people which considering the weather they live in shouldn't be too hard -also I don't like small schools, I love meeting new people so if its small then it should be in a higher populated area Oh an I know im specific but im hoping maybe a college kid comes along an says oh hey thats my school an tells me about it, thanks alot in advance people! - (more...)
