In Between Dreams
In Between Dreams For a man who gets his biggest kicks surfing the waves and strumming his guitar on a lonely beach in native Hawaii, singer-songwriter Jack Johnson has carved out quite a remarkable career on the mainland. His 2003 album, On and On, debuted at No. 3 on The Billboard 200 and subsequently went platinum on the back of hit single "The Horizon Has Been Defeated." The follow-up, meanwhile, seems destined to shine even brighter. The drifting chords and soft voice are still in place, only now Johnson's instinct for melody has sharpened alongside his ability to self-edit. These small concessions make third album, In Between Dreams, his most conspicuous, particularly on tracks like the three-minute relationship drama, "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing," and "Breakdown," a song he originally recorded for Handsome Boy Modeling School's White People album remade here to reveal its full stripped-down loveliness. Imagine all the coconuts it will buy. -- Aidin Vaziri

Transatlanticism
Transatlanticism With songs equal to those on We Have the Facts and a lush, brilliant production that continues what The Photo Album started, Transatlanticism is easily Death Cab's best record to date. Much attention has duly been focused on doe-eyed singer/lyricist Ben Gibbard, co-star of the Postal Service phenomenon, and Ben's voice is as strange, beautiful, and as strong as ever on these songs, which deal with the difficulties of long-distance relationships. But guitarist/producer Chris Walla once again proves himself to be the band's secret weapon, layering subtle sonic touches throughout Transatlanticism, which is most definitely a "headphone record." This Seattle quartet is one of the only bands to really have picked up the intelligent, emotionally resonant, and guitar-driven indie-pop torch that Built to Spill briefly lit in the mid-1990s (before themselves heading off to the stoner-rock territory). DCFC themselves seem poised to finally break out to a wider audience, and they truly deserve it with this disc. --Mike McGonigal

Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense Over the course of three nights at Hollywood's Pantages Theater in December 1983, filmmaker Jonathan Demme joined creative forces with cinematographer Jordan Cronenweth and Talking Heads... and miracles occurred. Following a staging concept by singer-guitarist David Byrne, this euphoric concert film transcends that all-too-limited genre to become the greatest film of its kind. A guaranteed cure for anyone's blues, it's a celebration of music that never grows old, fueled by the polyrhythmic pop-funk precision that was a Talking Heads trademark, and lit from within by the geeky supernova that is David Byrne.

The staging--and Demme's filming of it--builds toward an orgasmic release of music, rising from the bare-stage simplicity of Byrne, accompanied only by a boom box on "Psycho Killer," to the ecstatic crescendo of "Burning Down the House," by which time the Heads and additional personnel have all arrived on stage for a performance that seems channeled from heaven for the purpose of universal uplift. (God bless Demme for avoiding shots of the luckiest audience in '80s pop history; its presence is acknowledged, but not at the viewer's expense.) With the deliriously eccentric Byrne as ringleader (pausing mid-concert to emerge in his now-legendary oversized suit), this circus of musical pleasure defies the futility of reductive description; it begs to be experienced, felt in the heart, head, and bones, and held there the way we hold on to cherished memories. On those three nights in December 1983, Talking Heads gave love, life, and joy in generous amounts that years cannot erode, and Demme captured this act of creative goodwill on film with minimalist artistic perfection. Stop Making Sense is an invitation to pleasure that will never wear out its welcome. --Jeff Shannon

Open Question: I think I may want to transfer colleges, but I'm not sure, should I?
I'm a freshman at a catholic college in Iowa. I came to the college expecting to find acceptance by the community even though I'm not Catholic-but that hasn't happened. The college is also very conservative...and I'm a bleeding heart liberal. I also came to the college intending to major in political science, but had a change of heart and am now a music major and the music department here is tiny. I play cello and there isn't even an orchestra, so I'm not getting the prep I need for a future career. I absolutely love the music professors here, but I am concerned that I will not be prepared for my career. I have managed to make friends and am starting to feel like I fit in the social aspect, but for my major, I feel I will leave ill-prepared. Would you recommend transferring? I'm doing music education-I would love to be a professional, but work is so sporadic that you can't count on anything! (more...)

Open Question: I need some help getting on my feet , i need a life counselor please someone?
Im 32 yrs old, live with parents, no job,im the only child, and i stay in all the time. I have a college degree in teaching. BUt i tried it and cant handle the stress and bad kids. It was a miracle i graduated. My piano and song writing is my life but i cant make any money with it and most schools cut the music departments so its hard to get a fulltime music job in a school. I stay home all day watching tv and working on my car. I work on my car 24-7 , i put stuff on it, take it off , put it on again and go crazy with it. My car is my entire life. Its old but nothing great. I have 1 friend who is a girl that like me a realllll lot but im not good enough for her. I know it. Obviously. The first problem is the heavy addiction to the car. I spend time and money on it. I cant put it down. How can you help me to put it to the side and focus on my priorities. The is very serious, i need a real sharp person to solve this problem . I dont have money so i cant go to a shrink. #2 My piano is my life, how can i get back into the music world again? Why cant i bring myself to play? Why is the car the only thing i can find peace in. #3 And why am i afraid to get a job other then in music teaching and get on with my life. Im not dumb , people say, im just lazy. Why cant i get off my ass? Why? I am just all used up with answers. Thanks , please help, i will be very greatful. I know im a stranger to you but i have no one else to help me. I think im just going to waste away.. sorry to depress you why can i only find happiness in my car fixings (more...)

Open Question: Question about my career and music?
Alright so I love guitar, I love music, and I love business. I would absolutely love to get into something dealing with guitar, I have been thinking about opening up a music store that will sell instruments (not just guitars) when I'm out of college, of course right now I'm only a sophomore in high school lol. But I don't know if a music store would bring me much money. And money plays a fairly big part in what I'm going to do. So, is there a different career that deals with maybe playing guitar THAT WILL ALSO bring me really good money? How about a studio musician? Anything? Let me know! Thanks! (more...)

Open Question: Feedback on my story intro?
okay, so this is going to be my first book and it is about these girls who are all from a small town in lower Alabama. They are all high school seniors about to graduate. Well the main character, Anna, is going to go to school at Yale. Her best friends are all going to local schools. All except one, who is going to Harvard. But it is just so far off. Anna and her friends decide to start a traveling notebook that they can pass among each other throughout the year. After graduation they all go on a road trip together to Vegas. After they get back they have to start getting there stuff together for college. And when it is time to go, they give the notebook to Anna first, and they drew names for who gets it in what order. Well when she gets to Yale, Anna has trouble making friends until she meets Dylan (girl name) and they become pretty close. Dylan is from Georgia and she has had trouble adjusting to northern life too. (the weather, activities, etc.) and that is all i have planned out so far but i am thinking of TONS of ways the story can go from there. But anyways, here it is.... **************************************... "Mom? Has the mail ran yet?" Anna called her mom for the fourth time. She had been waiting for weeks and she was anxious. "Yea, it's on the table," her mom replied in a calm voice. How could she be calm at a moment like this? She ran to the table and grabbed the stack. There were three envelopes addressed to her. One was small, and the other two considerably larger. She opened the small one first. She was so nervous that she could barely get it open. With a shaking hand she pulled out the letter and unfolded it. "I didn't get in," Anna informed her mom in almost a whisper. Without speaking her mom grabbed her in her arms and started to comfort her. But Anna was not in the mood to hear it. She wanted to yell. "How could I not get in? I knew Harvard would be difficult to get in to, but I had perfect grades, I was the class president, I planned the prom, organized the blood drives and basically every program that was held at the school. I was even the yearbook editor. And apparently I'm not good enough for Harvard!" Anna was scared to call her best friends. They would understand, but she knew that Nadine had got in, and that would mean she got bragging rights. But they had always been there for her and she needed them now. So she picked up the phone and dialed Kayleigh's number. Sure enough, she answered and Nadine was there. Maybe she shouldn't tell Nadine right away. It might be best to tell her last. But she knew she couldn't do that to her. The best solution would be to tell them all at the same time. The place they usually met up at was Kayleigh's house, but that wouldn't do. Even though it was the most convenient, she would most likely be one of the first ones there and she couldn't have that. Not with Nadine over there right now. Maybe if they could all just come to her house, then it wouldn't be so bad. So she asked Kayleigh if they could come and within minutes, they were on there way. Next she had to call Elizabeth, Penelope, and Megan. They could all ride together so they were quick to come, too. While she was waiting on all of her friends to arrive, Anna went to the cabinet and got out a bag of popcorn. Then while it was poppin' in the microwave, she went to the coffee pot and put on a fresh pot. Although most people said they were too young for coffee, they had all drank it since they were little kids. Basically everyone where they lived drank coffee. She had often wondered if it was just that good, or if it had something to do with where they lived. Most likely where they lived. That did affect a lot of things about them. Like for example, their food, clothes, entertainment, and music. They ate deer meat, cornbread, and all sorts of Southern foods. For entertainment, they went to football games, rodeos, shopping in Mobile, and the going to the beach at the Gulf. Anna was pulled out of her train of thought when she heard the back door open. Her friends had given up knocking on the door long ago. They just walked in now. Anna turned and saw Kayleigh and Nadine walking in. They both had on blue jeans and a t-shirt but Kayleigh was rockin' her favorite pair of blue high-top Converses and Nadine had on a pair of Sperry's. They sat at the bar and looked at the stacks of mail. Shoot. Nadine saw the Yale and Princeton envelopes that she had forgot to put up. Anna hadn't even opened them yet, but she knew that Nadine would ask about Harvard. And as if on cue, Nadine chimed in. "Why haven't you opened your mail yet? I know you saw the college letters in the mail stack," she asked. "I just haven't gotten around to it yet," was all Anna could get out. Luckily she had put the Harvard letter and envelope in her room after she read it so Nadine wouldn't see that. But that couldn't stop her from thinking about it. That was basically all she talked about since receiving her a that last paragraph didn't quite fit.... sorry But i noticed how it was like the Traveling pants series when i read over it... but i actually got the idea from my friends... we have a notebook that we pass around from person to person... we have done it since i was in 7th grade and i just sorta put that in the story after i had the idea to write it.... Open Question: Should I fix my iBook or get a new notebook?
So, lately my iBook has been having a lot of troubles. It's about 2 years old and my sister's old notebook from college. She gave it to me this summer. In December one day it just all of the sudden stopped charging. I went to the Mac store and bought a new charger, and it still wouldn't charge. I went there again and the guy working there told me I could send it in to get every part fixed- but for $300. I need your advice. Should I go ahead and get it fixed, or pay $200 more to get a new laptop. I wouldn't be getting a Mac, since I can't afford to get one right now. =[ Oh, and if you think it's a better deal to just get a new one, do you have any suggestions of good, cheaper notebooks? I'm mainly going to use a new one for browsing the internet and maybe using word for school and stuff. I might put my music on it, but only if it has enough hard drive space and memory. (more...)

Open Question: how do I persuade my fiance that he needs to go to college?
I love my fiance to death! He's very smart and he can do just about anything, he knows alot about cpu's and web editing, music stuff (he's a musician and does music recording.) The only problem is he hasnt had a job in 2 years. Every job he's had he quit because of the supervisor, but he wants to get a permanent job, and he complains he cant get one, but I keep telling him to go to school and he will have a better chance at getting a job, even if he just gets an associates degree! But he doesnt want to and I'm in college and we are getting married next year, he has all these plans, and I think he is trying to get a job like tomorrow. But that's not possible with the economy like this...so I dont know what to do as far as persuading him to go to school....and NO I'm not leaving him because we've been together for 3 and a half years, and he's a very genuine and kind hearted person. NO NEGATIVE RESPONSES PLEASE, IF YOU EVEN THINK ABOUT LEAVING NEGATIVE ANSWERS PLEASE DONT COMMENT AT ALL!!! THANKS........ : ) (more...)

Open Question: I Need Tips for Singing?
Okay, so, I'm a fourteen year old High School Freshman and Mezzo Soprano who has never sung before in her life. I don't have a terrible voice (I don't think) but I have problems with staying on pitch (when singing along to a song, it's fine) and always have to clear my throat (I don't know why. I don't have a cold, there's just always phlegm in there.) So, for a Performance, me and two way more experienced singers are going to do a trio to "I Wish I Could Go Back to College" from Avenue Q. I have about a month to prepare, including about an hour a day working with my school music teacher. My question is: is there any way I can work on my pitch problems and prefect my voice at home? What are the best methods? Any help would be much appreciated. (more...)
