    * Map
    * 6 x 9
    * The most complete guide available
    * Fishing, camping, and hiking tips
    * Extensive list of waters and how to reach them

    Great fishing in breathtaking surroundings can be had in the Rocky Mountains, but you'll need this book, because unlike many remote destinations with fly-in access, these waters can only be reached on horseback or on foot. Part One covers gear and techniques for traveling, camping, and fly fishing, including practical advice on how to plan a trip, which hiking, camping, and fishing tackle and flies to bring (and which to leave at home). Part Two is a detailed guide to select destinations in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho and Oregon, all based on the firsthand experience of the author.

    Rich Osthoff is a professional fly tier and angling writer who has fished and hiked in the backcountry for 20-some years and written articles for the major fly-fishing magazines. This is his first book. He lives in Mauston, Wisconsin.

    Open Question: has anybody gone to the summer study program at penn state?
    I was looking at summer programs for high school students and this one sounded interesting. The Summer Study program at Penn State for 5-week College Credit Courses. (http://www.summerstudy.com/pennstate/main_5wk.cfm) I was wondering if anybody has any experience with this program? It seems like there's a lot of fun involved but not so much academics (from the videos and info)? If you have gone, was it worth the money? Did you learn/was it beneficial? Are the courses challenging or are they designed for standard-level students (for the college credit courses, not enrichment)? Was it enjoyable in terms of trips and recreational activities? Did you make friends easily? I'm sorry, I have a lot of questions but if you can contribute any info that would be great. Also, if you have gone to the other locations(Colorado, Paris) for the program you can comment. (more...)

    Resolved Question: What do you know that these people don't ?
    Khabibullo Abdusamatov, mathematician and astronomer at Pulkovskaya Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences: "Global warming results not from the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, but from an unusually high level of solar radiation and a lengthy - almost throughout the last century - growth in its intensity...Ascribing 'greenhouse' effect properties to the Earth's atmosphere is not scientifically substantiated...Heated greenhouse gases, which become lighter as a result of expansion, ascend to the atmosphere only to give the absorbed heat away."[13][14][15] Sallie Baliunas, astronomer, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics: "[T]he recent warming trend in the surface temperature record cannot be caused by the increase of human-made greenhouse gases in the air."[16] Reid Bryson, deceased, former emeritus professor of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, University of Wisconsin-Madison: "It?s absurd. Of course it?s going up. It has gone up since the early 1800s, before the Industrial Revolution, because we?re coming out of the Little Ice Age, not because we?re putting more carbon dioxide into the air."[17] George V. Chilingar, Professor of Civil and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Southern California: "The authors identify and describe the following global forces of nature driving the Earth?s climate: (1) solar radiation ..., (2) outgassing as a major supplier of gases to the World Ocean and the atmosphere, and, possibly, (3) microbial activities ... . The writers provide quantitative estimates of the scope and extent of their corresponding effects on the Earth?s climate [and] show that the human-induced climatic changes are negligible."[18] Ian Clark, hydrogeologist, professor, Department of Earth Sciences, University of Ottawa: "That portion of the scientific community that attributes climate warming to CO2 relies on the hypothesis that increasing CO2, which is in fact a minor greenhouse gas, triggers a much larger water vapour response to warm the atmosphere. This mechanism has never been tested scientifically beyond the mathematical models that predict extensive warming, and are confounded by the complexity of cloud formation - which has a cooling effect. ... We know that [the sun] was responsible for climate change in the past, and so is clearly going to play the lead role in present and future climate change. And interestingly... solar activity has recently begun a downward cycle."[19] David Douglass, solid-state physicist, professor, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Rochester: "The observed pattern of warming, comparing surface and atmospheric temperature trends, does not show the characteristic fingerprint associated with greenhouse warming. The inescapable conclusion is that the human contribution is not significant and that observed increases in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases make only a negligible contribution to climate warming."[20] Don Easterbrook, emeritus professor of geology, Western Washington University: "global warming since 1900 could well have happened without any effect of CO2. If the cycles continue as in the past, the current warm cycle should end soon and global temperatures should cool slightly until about 2035"[21] William M. Gray, Professor Emeritus and head of The Tropical Meteorology Project, Department of Atmospheric Science, Colorado State University: "This small warming is likely a result of the natural alterations in global ocean currents which are driven by ocean salinity variations. Ocean circulation variations are as yet little understood. Human kind has little or nothing to do with the recent temperature changes. We are not that influential."[22] "I am of the opinion that [global warming] is one of the greatest hoaxes ever perpetrated on the American people."[23] "So many people have a vested interest in this global-warming thing?all these big labs and research and stuff. The idea is to frighten the public, to get money to study it more."[24] William Kininmonth, meteorologist, former Australian delegate to World Meteorological Organization Commission for Climatology: "There has been a real climate change over the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries that can be attributed to natural phenomena. Natural variability of the climate system has been underestimated by IPCC and has, to now, dominated human influences."[25] George Kukla, retired Professor of Climatology at Columbia University and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, said in an interview: "What I think is this: Man is responsible for a PART of global warming. MOST of it is still natural."[26] David Legates, associate professor of geography and director of the Center for Climatic Research, University of Delaware: "About half of the warming during the 20th century occurred prior to the 1940s, and natural variability accounts for all or nearly all of the warming."[27] Marcel Leroux, former Professor of Climatology, Université Jean M Science advances through hypotheses based on a set of assumptions. Other scientists challenge and test those assumptions in what philosopher Karl Popper called the practice of 'falsibility.' Trying to disprove hypothesis is what real science is all about. Yet the hypothesis that human addition of CO2 would lead to significantly enhanced greenhouse warming was quickly accepted without this normal scientific challenge. As Dr. Richard S. Lindzen, Professor of Meteorology in MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences said, the consensus was reached before the research had even begun. Adherents to the hypothesis began defending the increasingly indefensible by launching personal attacks, essentially trying to frighten scientific opponents into silence. All four major global temperature tracking outlets (Hadley, NASA's GISS, UAH, RSS) have released updated data. All show that over the past year, global temperatures have dropped precipitously. A compiled list of all the sources can be seen here. The total amount of cooling ranges from 0.65C up to 0.75C -- a value large enough to wipe out most of the warming recorded over the past 100 years. All in one year's time. For all four sources, it's the single fastest temperature change ever recorded, either up or down. This was for 2007 and when the 2008 mean temp came out it was down again. I would like to see the names of all the pro global warming scientist that belive it is caused by humans. CARBON DIOXIDE MAKES UP 0.037% OF THE EARTHS ATMOSPHERES AND YET YOU DISMISS WATER VAPOR LIKE IT MEANS NOTHING TO THE ATMOSPHERE. LOOK UP THE PERCENTAGES YOUR SELF, IT IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE. Resolved Question: What to do for a short winter break vacation?
    Okay so I'm 15, I live with my dad and stepmom, and over this winter break me and my dad wanted to go on a little trip together. It would only be a weekend trip, so 3-4 days max probably. We live in Arizona (East Valley), and I was talking about maybe Oregon or Seattle, but the prices are too high I think. So we were planning on somewhere we could drive. So he was saying Flagstaff/Sedona and I was thinking that or Colorado maybe? The thing is, when I go on trips, I love doing activities and experiencing it. But my dad doesn't. Like I asked if we could go skiing or snowboarding and he said he wouldn't go. So where could we go that we could both participate and have a fun, yet relaxing time? P.s. My dad is a lawyer so price doesn't matter THAT much, but he wasn't gonna pay 1000$ in just airfare. (more...)

    Resolved Question: Where will I get in to College?
    I am in the IB program, but my grades are just OK- mostly Bs, some As and a few Cs in an extremely rigorous program. Lower (3.6 weighted) gpa sophomore year, but I improved- junior year my weighted GPA was a 4.2. SAT- 580 writing, 580 reading 550 math. ACT- 23 composite, but I received a writing score of 27, and 21 and 20 in math and science. For the Common app my essays were well thought out and genuine. Writing is probably my strength. I am involved in a lot of school activities, 2 in which I have leadership roles. So... I am applying to the following colleges. What are my chances? -Colorado College -William and Mary -Davidson College -Furman University -UNC Greensboro -Washington and Lee -Sewanee- University of the South (more...)

    Resolved Question: Advice on my future? (College/profession/path/etc.)?
    I am a junior in high school and starting to think about colleges and what I want to do. Before I tell you about myself, I will tell you the two professions i could look into going through college/med school/etc. to be: 1) Orthodontist 2) Architect Interests: I like hands on activities. I am good in physics and I enjoy understanding the concepts. I did great as a Freshman when taking Geometry. I do not like history. I like English, creative writing I guess. Math was never really considered a strong point of mine until recently I started to become better at it. My Dad is a Dentist. That's not why I want to become an orthodontist, but I guess it's information that might mean something. What else... I would enjoy constructing/designing the structure and inside of a house. But then again, with orthodontics I will (guessing) enjoy what I am doing, and i would be making a LOT more money. I know it's not all about the money, but it is a perk. If you have any advice let me know! Also, any college suggestions? Know anything about University of Colorado? THANKS. (P.S.- High school GPA: 3.6 SAT: Have not taken them yet, I have started tutoring Classes: The levels at my school (from lowest to highest) are CP2, CP, Honors, AP. Freshman year, I took half CP half CP2. Sophmore year I took 1 CP2, the rest CP. Junior year (current year) I am taking 1 honors and the rest CP. Senior year, I am going to take at least 2 honors and the rest either honors or CP. - I would appreciate any advice! thanks (more...)
