Steve Reich 1965-1995
Steve Reich 1965-1995 In the afterglow of his 60th birthday in 1997, Nonesuch Records delivered Steve Reich and his listeners an immense gift, this 10-CD retrospective of his work for the label, extending from his earliest tape-manipulation pieces to his most recent compositions utilizing samplers and the video artistry of Beryl Korot. Aside from the ear's liquid sense-making when it hears the dense and limber marimbas of Reich's Six Marimbas or his taut, dizzying Piano Phase, there is a physical response almost inevitable in Reich's music. It stuns and holds you. And he knows it. It's Gonna Rain struck an early chord of inventiveness, featuring an African American Pentecostal preacher's sermon and eventually spinning the title phrase into a jangling repetition of single words. Percussion works abound here: Clapping and Drumming stun with their deceptive similarity and warm clarity. Perennial favorite Piano Phase features pianists Nurit Tilles and Eduard Neumann synched up on two pianos and careening at full tilt in unison before their four hands fall out of time and phrase with each other, only to realign in a powerful swooping demonstration of energy and focus. The latter CDs hold abundant delights, many revealing Reich's late-discovered spiritualism and Judaica: Different Trains' examination of the Holocaust; Tehillim's shimmering Hebrew texts sung with fascinating choral power; Proverb's invocation of Perotin. Closing the set are recent pieces: Nagoya Marimbas, and the sampler-rich City Life and The Cave. --Andrew Bartlett

Tchaikovsky & Assad: Concertos in D major
Tchaikovsky & Assad: Concertos in D major In this live recording, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg proves again that she is a violinist and performer sui generis. Her pairing of a familiar favorite with the premiere of a brand-new work is as audacious as her playing, and she puts her very personal stamp on both. The Concerto by Clarice Assad grew out of the long association between the violinist and guitarists Sergio Assad, Clarice's father, and his brother Odair. The piece, written for Sonnenberg, is tailored to her strengths, her fiery temperament and her mercurial personality. Tonal and beautiful, its dreamy, long-breathing melodies offer the soloist ample opportunity to display her ravishing, infinitely variable tone; the lively, exuberant dances and excursions into the highest register exploit her masterful, brilliant technique. No composer could wish for a more persuasive advocate. Sonnenberg's approach to the Tchaikovsky is highly idiosyncratic, but also fresh and illuminating, especially in its unusual lightness and caressing capriciousness. Her tone ranges from throbbing intensity to floating, weightless delicacy; her romantic abandon, tempo changes and rhythmic liberties are unrestrained. Though she takes risks with a true virtuoso's fearlessness, even the fastest passages are models of clarity and her intonation is flawless. The orchestra supports her wonderfully, and brings out all the colors in Assad's shimmering, sparkling orchestration. --Edith Eisler

Voting Question: is elway coming back to the broncos? read below.?
Is 1 more comeback in store for Elway? By PAT GRAHAM, AP Sports Writer Dec 31, 6:34 pm EST Buzz up! Print Related Video Scariest playoff teamsScariest playoff teams NFL surprises & busts Fantasy: 2009 draft picks More NFL Videos DENVER (AP)?The Denver Broncos are a team in need of a comeback. No surprise, then, that John Elway?s name keeps popping up. The Hall of Fame quarterback has been mentioned as a possible part of the management team that replaces Mike Shanahan, who was terminated as coach and executive vice president of football operations. No. 7 in the front office? Shanahan certainly believes Elway?s presence could be a good move for the Broncos. ?We know what John Elway means to Denver,? Shanahan said Wednesday at his farewell news conference. ?If I was a free agent coming in and John Elway was there, I?d sign for no money.? The idea isn?t so farfetched: Elway co-owns the Arena Football League?s Colorado Crush with Broncos owner Pat Bowlen. However, the ex-QB is lean on experience, his only front-office background coming from running the Crush, a team whose season is currently on hold as the league figures out its financial situation. ADVERTISEMENT On the field, there was nobody better?at least there?s very little debate about that in Denver. Shanahan?s arrival as coach helped Elway break through and finally win not one, but two Super Bowls. Elway was named MVP of the second one and strolled off into the sunset after that. He engineered 47 winning or game-saving drives in his career, and now, many in the Mile High City hope he?ll be called on for another kind of save. ?John Elway?s got lots of things to do,? Bowlen said. ?He?s got a business life of his own. He?s a very busy man ? I haven?t talked to John. I don?t have any idea if he has any interest. But I do know he?s very busy doing a lot of other things.? Elway did not immediately return calls or e-mails seeking comment. Bowlen wouldn?t speculate on who he may be courting to run the club, but did say his priority is to find a head coach first, a front-office face later. He doesn?t foresee giving the next coach the same type of command that he afforded Shanahan. Names such as Bill Cowher, Scott Pioli and a number of NFL assistants, including Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, have been mentioned. ?I hope that I can replace him with somebody that can be on the same level that Mike was,? Bowlen said, trying to hold back his emotions as he talked about his close relationship with Shanahan. ?That?s obviously going to be very hard to do. I think it was time for the organization to move on and for Mike to move on. I have no regrets in making that decision. ?We?re trying to get a great coach to come in here. This job in Denver is a very attractive one.? Whoever he picks won?t be as well-known in Denver as Elway, who has turned into an entrepreneur, running a string of car dealerships before selling the company. His name is on a pair of fancy steakhouses in the area, he?s a shareholder in the Colorado-based Professional Bull Riders, Inc., along with Wayne Gretzky, and teamed with a store to produce his own signature furniture line. He?s also shown an interest in politics and has wedding bells in his future after his engagement to Paige Green, a former Oakland Raiders cheerleader whom he met at a celebrity golf tournament three years ago. His time is pretty well occupied these days. The next Broncos coach will inherit a prolific offense that has a franchise quarterback in place in Jay Cutler, who set team records for passing yards, completions and pass attempts while earning his first Pro Bowl nod. Elway even said last month how impressed he was with the maturation of Cutler, who famously claimed that he had a stronger arm than the Bronco great. ?He can throw the ball well and move around,? Elway said. ?The sky?s the limit for Jay as long as he continues to work hard.? Bowlen had a conversation with Cutler on Wednesday morning, reassuring the third-year quarterback who has a strong bond with quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates. A bond like Shanahan and Elway had in their heyday. ?Jay understands enough about the business of football, the game of football, to know there?s going to be coaching changes,? Bowlen said. ?I didn?t sense that Jay had any negative feelings about it. I?m sure he?s very interested in who?s going to be the next head coach. Obviously, he?s `The Man? around here now.? Elway will always be the standard among signal callers in Denver. Brian Griese and Jake Plummer couldn?t win the ultimate prize living under the shadow of Elway, while Cutler has yet to even make it to the playoffs. Could one help the other? ?I think John would be perfect for any organization, especially this one if that?s what he wants to do,? Shanahan said. (more...)

Open Question: POLL: Stimulus package for all Americans?
...what do you think? Give each head of household $100,000.00 with the stipulation that a portion of that money must be used to purchase a new vehicle from "The Big Three". Any leftover cash could/may be used towards mortgage payments, health insurance, etc. If you do the math, the "bailout" money will be better spent in the hands of consumers, not corporations. After all, it IS our money in the first place-let US use it wisely. I've edited this 'letter to the editor' a little bit (to shorten it). Source: The Rocky Mountain News 12-30-08. Resolved Question: Do you really believe this Some Mexicans leaving U.S.planning never to return & are they here only for money?
DENVER ? After going months without a full-time job, Daniel Ramirez has decided it's time to return to family in Mexico. Vicenta Rodriguez Lopez says she can't afford to live in Colorado any more because her husband was deported. Roberto Espinoza is going back, too. After 18 years as a mechanic for a General Motors dealership in Denver, his work permit wasn't renewed and he didn't want to remain in the country illegally. All are leaving Colorado in time for Christmas ? joining a traditional holiday migration that will number almost 1 million people, says Mexico's interior ministry. But they have no intention of returning to Colorado, a place that promised prosperity. Layoffs, dwindling job opportunities, anti-immigrant sentiment and the crackdown on illegal immigrants are forcing hard choices on many Mexican nationals in Colorado. Though not an exodus, some are returning to a nation they haven't seen in years. "You despair. You think, 'I used to earn $600 a week and now I'm getting half of that a week?"' said Ramirez, 38, who lost his Denver construction job in August. He left last week, driving to San Luis Potosi in central Mexico. Mexico's consul general in Denver, Eduardo Arnal, said more people like Ramirez are going home for good. He wants his six children to grow up in Mexico, where he thinks family values are stronger. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/world/mexico/stories/121508dnintmexicans.19d086e.html (more...)

Resolved Question: What do U think of this latest study Illegal Immigration Costs Colorado Nearly $1.1 Billion Annually ?
WASHINGTON, Dec. 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A report prepared by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) finds that illegal immigration costs Colorado about $1.1 billion a year, or about $612 for every native-born household in the state. The report, The Costs of Illegal Immigration to Coloradans, looks at just three essential state provided services and programs: K-12 education, public health care, and incarceration from criminal illegal aliens. According the report, illegal aliens in Colorado pay about $160 million in taxes, reducing the net costs to the state to $912 million annually. However, since most of the jobs currently held by illegal aliens would likely be filled by legal workers, at higher wages, the taxes paid by illegal aliens would have been collected anyway. The release of The Costs of Illegal Immigration to Coloradans coincides with worsening fiscal news for the state. While the state spends more than $1 billion on services for illegal aliens, Colorado is faced with a $101 million budget shortfall for the current fiscal year. -- Education. K-12 education for the estimated 84,000 children of illegal aliens attending Colorado public schools costs taxpayers $925 million. It costs the state an additional $68 million a year to provide for the special educational needs of nonEnglish-speaking kids. -- Health care. Uncompensated health care for illegal aliens costs Colorado $78 million a year. -- Incarceration. In addition to the human and economic costs of crimes committed by criminal illegal aliens, incarcerating the perpetrators carries a $38 million annual price tag. "Even in the best of economic times, $1.1 billion would be an unnecessary and unjustifiable burden on Colorado taxpayers," said Dan Stein, president of FAIR. "With Colorado, like nearly every other state, forced to cut vital programs and services these costs are simply untenable." In recent years, Colorado has taken limited steps to enforce laws against illegal immigration, including having two police units trained to identify and detain suspected illegal aliens. Gov. Bill Ritter has also appointed a special panel to examine other options for local immigration enforcement. "The costs of illegal immigration in Colorado are ten times greater than the current fiscal shortfall," noted Stein. "Given the stark realities faced by the state, it is critical that Colorado take the necessary steps to reduce the $1.1 billion burden associated with illegal immigration." The full report, The Costs of Illegal Immigration to Coloradans, is available at www.fairus.org. http://news.yahoo.com/s/usnw/20081211/pl_usnw/illegal_immigration_costs_colorado_nearly1_1_billion_annually_finds_newly_released_study_from_fair (more...)
