Writing Down the River: Into the Heart of the Grand Canyon

Photographer Kathleen Jo Ryan first witnessed the awe-inspiring spectacle of the Grand Canyon in 1987. A year later she rafted the Colorado River into the canyon, emerging from this transforming experience with the idea for a book: "Going down the river into the heart of the canyon is adventuring into a place of spirit. I hold a warm, overwhelming feeling of gratitude, respect, and humility for having been allowed to float and play through this majestic canyon." In
Writing Down the River Ryan shares her gratitude by inviting women writers to venture down the Colorado and contribute their "personal journeys." Gretel Ehrlich provides context--historical, geographic, and biographical--in the foreword, and 15 other writers join the celebration with their individual voices.
Sharman Apt Russell, author of When the Land Was Young: Reflections on American Archaeology, describes her initial peek: "My heart starts beating fast when I first see the Grand Canyon, looking down from the South Rim, the vertigo of too much space. My bones feel hollow, like a bird's bones." Annick Smith, editor of The Last Best Place: A Montana Anthology, writes about the roar of the rapids: "Then comes the fifth wave. We climb up and up, stroking hard, but we do not cut through. The wave grows. It's a demon curling above us. Its foaming dragon breath is distinct as a Japanese painting, alive. Now I am stroking air." Judith Freeman, author of A Desert of Pure Feeling, writes of the lingering aftereffects: "For many nights after I left the river I awoke in darkness with the feeling I was still in the canyon. I sat up suddenly in strange beds, in desert motels and distant cities, certain that I was still sleeping on a rock ledge or a spit of sand."
Ryan's photographs of rock, water, and sky round out this evocative portrait of a place unlike any in the world. Taken as a whole, Writing Down the River is a collection of personal reflections as well as a tribute to the unifying power of landscape.

Resolved Question: Does Hunter's Hill Apartments in Englewood, CO, still exist?
There was a major road called Yosemite Rd on one side and I think it was Xanthia on the other side. Down the street from Xanthia there was a park. I used to live there in the early 80's and I am wondering if it still exists. The apartments are brown and made entirely of wood. Actually when I was in Colorado in 2005 I did visit the place but I can't remember if the name was still Hunter's Hill.
I can't find them in the Yellow Pages. Does the apartment complex still exist? Or did they change their name?

Resolved Question: Why is self publishing is bad than going to a publishing place?
okay. people's I'm trying to publish a book it is all ready to 330 already and I think it will end at 500 pages but I'm hoping to squeeze it to 400 pages instead.
I been doing this since mid 5th grade and still am doing this right at this moment. I been not doing it so long until some people was urging me to get it publish *though I was thinking that before them but somehow I was like kind of put down sometimes because how long the story line is* and right know I'm trying to see if there is anybody out there that can tell me this question.
another one:
Does Publishing cost anything? *cause I seen some go to 399 or something like that*
Do you know some other place beside New York City to publish it? *Like anywhere from Texas up to Colorado to Wyoming to Michigan? Anywhere near there?*
What do you should NOT do when your trying to publishing a book in a hurry? *though i'm not in a hurry . . . I don't think I am...*
How long does a book get publish in how many days? does it takes months, days, or years? *If it takes years then I'm mad at my self* non of yall people *
thanks! help me! it will help me out great!

Voting Question: Psychics, help me! I'm so freaked out!?
All fakes please leave as well as people who are going to tell me psychics are fake. I have been recently exercising my psychics abilities. I write stories and just a while ago I wrote about plane crash on a runway. I got bored and decided to go on the internet. When i click the internet symbol on my computer the first page it goes to CNN. Then on the headlines it showed a plane crash on a runway at an airport in Colorado. IS this a coincidence or did i predict something without knowing? Go on CNN.com and look at the "Other News". It should be the first one. I'm so freaked out!

Resolved Question: If global warming is real, why are the glaciers expanding world wide?
We have all heard stories throughout the years about how the glaciers are the sure sign that global warming is real. However recent stories have shown that Al Gore's favorite scientist fudged his numbers for the UN IPCC Global Warming council. Not once, but twice now. See the story at:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/columnists/christopherbooker/3563532/The-world-has-never-seen-such-freezing-heat.html
In doing my research for this question, I also found a web site that listed all the glaciers that are growing worldwide. See this link for the links to the actual stories:
http://www.iceagenow.com/List_of_Expanding_Glaciers.htm
This web site has numerous stories listed.

is the second largest glacier in Norway. It is a

which has steadily increased in mass since the
1960s when heavier winter precipitation set in.)
Norway's glaciers growing at record pace. The face of the Briksdal glacier, an off-shoot of the largest glacier in Norway and mainland Europe, is growing by an average 7.2 inches (18 cm) per day. (From the Norwegian daily Bergens Tidende.)

Greenland glacier advancing 7.2 miles per year! The BBC recently ran
a documentary, The Big Chill, saying that we could be on the verge of an ice age. Britain could be heading towards an Alaskan-type climate within a decade, say scientists, because the Gulf Stream is being gradually cut off. The Gulf Stream keeps temperatures unusually high for such a northerly latitude. One of Greenland?s largest glaciers has already doubled its rate of advance, moving forward at the rate of 12 kilometers (7.2 miles) per year. To see a transcript of the documentary, go to

NEW ZEALAND
All 48 glaciers in the Southern Alps have grown during the past year.
The growth is at the head of the glaciers, high in the mountains, where they gained more ice than they lost. Noticeable growth should be seen at the foot of the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers within two to three years.(27 May 2003) Fox, Franz Josef glaciers defy trend - New Zealand's two best-known laciers are still on the march - 31 Jan 07 - See Franz Josef Glacier

- Argentina's Perito Moreno Glacier (the largest glacier in Patagonia) is advancing at the rate of 7 feet per day. The 250 km² ice formation, 30 km long, is one of 48 glaciers fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. This ice field, located in the Andes system shared with Chile, is the world's third largest reserve of fresh water.

Resolved Question: Do you think Obama's "National Security Force" is scary?
I've changed my mind after I read the entire excerpt from his speech. Here it is;
Obama, July 2, Colorado Springs, CO: [As] president I will expand AmeriCorps to 250,000 slots [from 75,000] and make that increased service a vehicle to meet national goals, like providing health care and education, saving our planet and restoring our standing in the world, so that citizens see their effort connected to a common purpose.
People of all ages, stations and skills will be asked to serve. Because when it comes to the challenges we face, the American people are not the problem ? they are the answer. So we are going to send more college graduates to teach and mentor our young people. We'll call on Americans to join an energy corps, to conduct renewable energy and environmental clean-up projects in their neighborhoods all across the country.
We will enlist our veterans to find jobs and support for other vets, and to be there for our military families. And we're going to grow our Foreign Service, open consulates that have been shuttered and double the size of the Peace Corps by 2011 to renew our diplomacy. We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set.
We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded. We need to use technology to connect people to service. We'll expand USA Freedom Corps to create online networks where American can browse opportunities to volunteer. You'll be able to search by category, time commitment and skill sets. You'll be able to rate service opportunities, build service networks, and create your own service pages to track your hours and activities.
This will empower more Americans to craft their own service agenda and make their own change from the bottom up.
It's not quite as scary when I have read the entire quote.
Bob S... Thanks for your comments. I see your point and I'm not looking for more and more government agencies. We need to scale back the Federal Government. What was being lauded was this "National Security Force" was a NEW federal law enforcement force that would be under the control of the President. That is not the case.

Resolved Question: Why am I locked out of Pogo when I requested to remain logged in?
To Whom I May Concern:
I was supposed to remain signed in. Today, I found my sign-in information not present at the Pogo home page.
I tried to acquire my sign in information but was unable to make it work. I paid for a year of Pogo and within 3 weeks I cannot sign in. What is going on? My name is Paul McNalley and the screen name is PaulMcNalley without the space.
With a couple of attempts of acquiring my sign in info. The system (Pogo) locked me out. I feel cheated out of a day of usage. I am going to Colorado in a couple days and being disabled rely on Pogo to help with my down time.

Resolved Question: Can you tell me about the University of Colorado System?
I applied to the Denver and Colorado Springs campuses, but I won't visit unless I get accepted. I would love to know some more about them both! Can you tell me about the dorms, people, campus, Denver and C.S. as cities (what is there to do?). Also, how hard are they to get into? (I've researched the average ACT scores and GPAs and stuff, but what else can you tell me?) Finally, is it really only around $20,000 for out of state students? That seems awfully low, so I'm wondering if I'm looking at the right page on the site. ANY info would be awesome! Thanks!

Share Print CommentsAs the election nears, examples of political dirty tricks are emerging with greater frequency.
On Tuesday, the Virginia Pilot reported that a phony Board of Elections flier was circulating the state "advising Republicans to vote on Nov. 4 and Democrats on Nov. 5." Voting, of course, is on the 4th only, creating fear among neutral observers and the Obama campaign that people were simply going to miss the opportunity to go to the polls.
Earlier this month, meanwhile, an anonymous flier was circulating in predominantly African-American neighborhoods in Philadelphia telling voters they could be arrested at the polls if they show up to vote with outstanding arrest warrants or unpaid parking tickets. This is also untrue.
Dirty tricks and phony fliers represent the dark underside of nearly every election. And certainly, when it comes to the current contest, these tactics started long ago. Last March, as Time Magazine noted, a letter was being sent around Colorado, warning that out-of-state students could not register if their parents claimed them as dependents in another state." One of the more common falsities making its way through email chains has warned voters in some states (updated below) that they will be turned away from the polls if they wore paraphernalia demonstrating their support for one particular candidate.
Since these antics are becoming more and more common we encourage readers to send in tips or episodes they have witnessed to the Huffington Post.
UPDATE: Several readers have pointed out that, in fact, several states do prohibit passive electioneering (buttons, t-shirts, etc.) in polling places. In Texas, for example, the law is as follows:
[A] person may not wear a badge, insignia, emblem, or other similar communicative device relating to a candidate, measure, or political party appearing on the ballot, or to the conduct of the election, in the polling place or within 100 feet of any outside door through which a voter may enter the building in which the polling place is located.
