Oxidant Air Pollution Impacts in the Montane Forests of Southern California: A Case Study of the San Bernardino Mountains (Ecological Studies)
Oxidant Air Pollution Impacts in the Montane Forests of Southern California: A Case Study of the San Bernardino Mountains (Ecological Studies) Since the 1950s, the pines native to the San Bernardino Mountains in Southern California have shown symptoms of decline that have proven to result from exposure to ozone, a major plant-damaging gas in photochemical oxidant air pollution. Because of their proximity to major urban areas, the San Bernardino Mountains have served as a natural laboratory for studying effects of oxidant and acidic air pollution on a mixed-conifer forest. This volume presents a body of research conducted over more than thirty years, including an intensive interdisciplinary five-year study begun in 1991. Chapters include studies of the relationships of biogeography and climate to the region's air pollution, the chemical and physiological mechanisms of ozone injury, as well as the impacts of nitrogen-containing pollutants and natural stresses on polluted forests. The synthesis of such long-term studies provides insights into the combined influences of pollutants on ecosystem function in forested regions with Mediterranean-type climates.

Resolved Question: Any internal referencing needed? Essay and sources provided.?
I had to write an essay, including internal referencing if needed. I'm not quite sure if my essay needs it. I will provide both the essay, and where I got the information. Please, help me. Essay:: The Geologic Time Scale is a scale used to define the relationships between events in the Earth?s history and the timing in which they occurred. The Geologic Time Scale stretches from the creation of the Earth; 4.5 billions of years ago, to present day; separating the periods, and eras by the events that occurred in them. The Cretaceous period is one period on this scale, following the Jurassic period. It is part of the Mesozoic era, and lasts from about 144-65 millions of years ago. This period includes many events that were important to the Earth?s history; the break-up of the super continent Pangaea, and the second most extensive extinction of the history of the Earth, for example. Every time period and era in the Geologic Time Scale had biotic factors (plants, animals, and organisms) in them. In the cretaceous period flowering plants began to flourish; changing the Earth?s landscape tremendously. They also supplied many plant-eating dinosaurs with plentiful and nutritious food. Cycadeoidea, another type of plant, evolved during the Cretaceous and went extinct with the dinosaurs. Other Cretaceous period plants included; Podocarpus, Betulaceae , Araliaceae, conifers, Corneaceae, Ginkgophyta , Magnoliaceae and Salicaceae. The cretaceous period was part of the ?Age of the Dinosaurs?. It may have seen more dinosaurs than ever before. In this period many huge carnivores appeared, including; the Tyrannosaurus Rex, and the Gigantosoraus. The first recorded placental mammals appeared in the beginning of the cretaceous. This period also saw the rise and fall of the toothed birds. Also, the earliest fossils of birds resembling; loons, grebes, cormorants, pelicans, flamingos, ibises, rails, and sandpipers, were from the Cretaceous. Every period and era in the Geologic Time Scale also had abiotic factors existing in them. In the cretaceous period the break-up of the super continent Pangaea was underway. At this time South America and Africa were separated, it also appeared that Europe, Greenland, and North America were still connected. This period was a relatively warm and subtropical one, with no polar ice caps. It was a time of high tectonic and volcanic activity. Many mountain ranges were also formed, including; California?s Sierra Nevadas, the Rocky Mountains, and the European Alps. Toward the mid-cretaceous, sea levels had risen, covering about one third of the land area. In the end of the cretaceous, the sea levels dropped, causing land exposure and greater extremes between equatorial and polar temperatures. The cretaceous period ended with the second most extensive extinction in the history of the Earth. This extinction included the dinosaurs, about half of all invertebrate marine organisms, and many other animals. The primary cause of this is thought to be an asteroid impact. There are also other theories, including; high volcanism, climate changes due to continental drift, and disease. This period marks the end of the ?Age of the Reptiles? and the beginning of the ?Age of the Mammals?. The abiotic factors of the periods and eras in the Geologic Time Scale affect the biotic factors in them. The climate changes, volcanism, and asteroid impacts may have caused the demise of many species of animals in the cretaceous period, for example. The rise and fall could have created, and destroyed habitats. Also, continental drift caused climate changes; tremendously affecting how the animals in this period lived. They changed the animals? and plants? natural habitats greatly. Abiotic factors have a huge impact on animals and plants. There were no humans living in this time frame, it was the age of the reptiles. Humans did not exist until millions of years later, until the age of the mammals. If humans had existed in this period, they would have to constantly adapt to the abiotic factors. In the beginning of the cretaceous period it was a warm, subtropical climate. If I were a human in the early-cretaceous, the only big adaptation I would have had to make would be defense; as, there were many carnivores significantly larger than a human. I would have to settle where there were plant eating animals, posing little to no risk to me and my young. For food, I would have eaten plants, and possibly smaller plant-eating-animals. If humans had lived during this period, they would probably be extinct, or close to it, by the mid-cretaceous; due to the dramatic rise in sea-levels and climate changes. The cretaceous period is one of many on the Geologic Time Scale. It mostly had a mild, subtropical climate. Also, flowered plants, dinosaurs, and mammals were flourishing. This period includes many events that were important to the Earth?s history; the break-up of the super continent Pangaea, and the second most extensive The sources are:: http://www.prehistory.com/timeline/cretace.htm http://www.factmonster.com/ce6/sci/A0857621.html http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/dinosaurs/mesozoic/Cretaceous.html http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/dinosaurs/plants/Cretaceous.shtml I know that it isn't cited yet. Resolved Question: What is Vancouver, BC, Canada like?
I live in Fort Worth, Texas and I love it here. But find the mountains, the ocean, and the conifers in the North West to be quite alluring. Homes there seem high (from looking them up), and I hear of Chinese gangs and an unsafe downtown? It looks good in photographs and I've been to Victoria, BC, Sidney, BC, Seattle, Washington, and Tacoma, Washington, so I assume Vancouver has a similar landscape.I'd love to hear what are the pros and cons of this city. Resolved Question: what does this poem mean? please help!!!?
LOST BROTHER I knew that tree was my lost brother when I heard he was cut down at four thousand eight hundred sixty-two years; I knew we had the same mother. His death pained me. I made up a story. I realized, when I saw his photograph, he was an evergreen, a brisdecone like me, who had lived from an early age with a certain amount of dieback, at impossible locations, at elevations over ten thousand feet in extreme weather. His company: other conifers, the rosy finch, the rock wren, the raven and clouds, blue and silver insects that fed mostly off each other. Some years bighorn sheep visited in summer? he was entertained by red bats, black-tailed jackrabbits, homed lizards, the creatures old and young he sheltered. Beside him in the shade, pink mountain pennyroyal? to his south, white angelica. I am prepared to live as long as he did (it would please our mother), live with clouds and those I love suffering w (more...)
