Does not having a national language in the USA discourage immigrant people from becoming assimilated? I mean, you go to ALMOST any country in Europe and people and services are usually only offered in their native language and any other second language. I lived in Spain for 7 years and most people do not speak English and you usually can not obtain services in English. I also lived in the UK for 10 years and you do not get services offered in Hindi and Arabic. By services I mean, as an example, you can't call the operator and get someone who speaks Arabic in Britain, or in Spain you can't call the operator and find someone who speaks German. I believe that not having a national language discourages immigrant people from assimilating. And it seems that most immigrants have no intention of learning the English language, since it is so easy for them to live here and not speak English. What are your thoughts? (more...)

A Guatemalan national who says he fled political persecution and a threat of execution in his native country to start a new life in America was sentenced Thursday to 2-1/2 years in federal prison for selling hundreds of out-of-state license plates to illegal immigrants on the Eastern Shore. Authorities said at a sentencing hearing Thursday that they have linked 56 automobile accidents, including five fatalities, to vehicles with license plates sold by the defendant, Felipe Jesus Mazariegos-Perez, 44. The operation, which Mazariegos-Perez ran from his trailer in Nelsonia in Accomack County for at least six years, netted him more than $200,000, an estimate the U.S. attorney's office says is conservative. The authorities, including the FBI, the Virginia State Police and immigration agents, found only a little more than $2,000 in the trailer when they arrested Mazariegos-Perez and his wife earlier this year. They don't know where the rest of the money went. Mazariegos-Perez's wife, Elvia Elizabel Soto-Ortiz, 26, was sentenced Thursday to nine months in prison for her role in the scheme. The couple, both of whom face deportation, have five American-born children who will now be living with relatives, the attorneys in the case said. Based in part on a Virginian-Pilot investigation in 2005, the authorities launched their own inquiry into the heightened number of vehicles with out-of-state plates, mostly from Tennessee and Mississippi, involved in serious crashes. While investigating a prostitution ring on the Eastern Shore, the authorities were able to get informants to record conversations with Mazariegos-Perez and his wife about the sales of license plates. After Virginia tightened its vehicle registration requirements, making it difficult for illegal immigrants to title cars, the migrant workers turned to states such as Tennessee, Mississippi, North Carolina and Georgia where it was easier to register cars under phony names. Mazariegos-Perez would drive to those states to buy the plates. PLEASE! Take time to read my little speech and critique it. It's supposed to be 5 minutes long. The speech topic is the National Theme: ?HOSA: Where One Person?s Passion Becomes Another Person?s Hero.? HOSA = Health Occupation Students of America MY SPEECH As children we were all afraid of something. Most of us were afraid of the dark; some of us were afraid of the boogey man or even going to school ? I know I was. The funny thing is that I don?t remember ever being afraid of any of these things but NOTHING on God?s green earth scared me more than the sight of blood, no matter how small. But this fear would not last. One day, when I was in the 4th grade my mom dropped me off at school and as always, I ran to the soccer field to get in some play time before classes began and what I saw would change my life forever. When I got to the dirt field I noticed a small crowd of people and weaved my way through the crowd to see what was going on. I saw the biggest pool of blood I have ever seen and hopefully that I would ever see. From that day onwards I was never afraid of blood. The story was that a kid who was about 10 years old came to school early and no one was there. He got bored and started swinging on the goal post. As he was swinging and playing the goal gave way, fell on him, and almost split his head in half. Now, the unfortunate miracle was that he didn?t die instantly but later died in the arms of his mom at the local hospital. I only wished I was there to comfort him and offer him some kind of hope. Let?s fast-forward to the present time. When I first came to the U.S from Nigeria in 2003 I was afraid and overwhelmed. I found myself in a foreign country and the only thing I could think about was: How can I survive here? When it came the time to choose a high school, my dad was trying as hard as he could to convince me to enroll in a school that specialized in specifics fields of study like Law, Art, Technology and Medicine. His grand plan was for me to become a medical doctor! To be honest with you, I had no interest in medicine but as fate would have it I?m in the medical field. As I speak to you right now I am halfway through my junior year clinical rotation and boy have I seen things? I have seen patients who not only are they physically helpless but emotionally hopeless. People who are longing, thirsting for someone to say: It will be okay. As I see these things, they remind me of that boy whose untimely death helped me overcome my fear of blood. I only pray that one day as a medical professional who was nurtured by HOSA and its principles I can bring comfort and peace to those who need it the most. If it was up to me, this years theme would be: ?HOSA: Where passion overcomes fear? and I can attest to that. (more...)

multi-trillion dollar spending spree? The whole theory behind contributing to a tax deferred retirement account is that hopefully you will be paying less of a tax percentage when you withdraw the money at or during retirement compared to the tax percentage that you would currently pay. For example, I'm advising my friends and clients to start splitting their contributions between post and pre-tax retirement plans, my favorite being the Roth 401k. It's important for hard working people to realize that the only real way to repay these debts is via taxation, and that we need to protect ourselves now from astronomical tax rates in the future. So the reality of the issue being that either we raise taxes to pay our debt, or we pay by leveraging our national resources to foreign countries - what is the best plan here? If I was President, my plan to raise capital would be rooted in the leasing of liberal college students to communist countries so they could come back home with some respect for America.
