Open Question: Religion has become more like a company brand rather than a form of belief systems?
In this 20th globalised world of ours, everything that we have from our head to toes, our background, our beliefs and etc all come with a brand.E.g If you come from a well-educated family, the school that you come from will become a brand,if you come from a religious background, your religion is a brand of your beliefs. These have resulted in people to have delusions of the forms of beliefs that they initially have from their own religious culture,is it merely a form of "brand" that needs to be reinforced or is it a belief that has been passed down by the creator that should be learnt? Open Question: A girl living with a parent..?
but is 27. So more of a woman now. Staying "at home"--mother's house until soon, becayse looking for a pl. but in the meantime, culturally it's common for my culture, but am American so I understand it's frowned upon here. If the parent is a widow, does it change any? if the daughter sticks around longer as in giving the mom company? it's a 3 bdrm., and otherwise the mother would be alone. Thx for the opinions, and, pls be nice. (more...)

Open Question: What do you think of this story?
É Sylvester Outley knows the harsh realities of drug addiction and street life, but he also understands the power of transformation. Once one of the ten most wanted criminals in Texas, Outley, a 1969 Goshen College graduate now is founder and director of SELF Inc., one of the largest drug rehabilitation programs in Philadelphia, Pa. Outley, along with Ed Î57 and Theo Hartzler Yoder Î58 of Archbold, Ohio, and Kathleen Zehr Î40 of Lowville, N.Y., will receive Goshen CollegeÎs most prestigious alumni award Ë the Culture for Service Award, named after the collegeÎs motto Ë during Alumni Weekend Oct. 4-6. Outley will talk to students and the public in a convocation at 10 a.m. Oct. 4 in the collegeÎs Church-Chapel; his speech is titled øFaith Works.Ó During the convocation, two Goshen College students will receive Barnabas Servant Leadership Awards for their on- and off-campus service to others. By age 30, Outley had been arrested 86 times for drug involvement and swindling, and was eventually sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in 1955 Ë years of paradox which he later said were dehumanizing, yet gave him self-understanding, allowing him to transcend drugs and gain meaning in life. He earned his G.E.D. and graduated from Goshen with a social work major. He earned masterÎs and doctorate degrees before founding the Socio-Emotional Learning and Family Center in Chester County, Pa., a therapeutic residential program for criminals, as well as Outley Professional Services, an outpatient drug and alcohol facility in Philadelphia, which became SELF. SELF now has a $4 million annual budget, encompassing emergency shelters, peer outreach, transitional housing and community revitalization programs. More than just sobriety training, SELF teaches that addicts must use the basic life principles of love, respect, truth, honesty, care, compassion and forgiveness to rebuild individual lives. OutleyÎs work in transforming the cityÎs shelters from havens for addiction and crime into bases for recovery and wellness has become the model for PhiladelphiaÎs entire shelter system. And SELF continues to allow people to realize their full potential as øhumans made in GodÎs imageÓ by rebuilding their lives Ë one at a time (more...)

Open Question: Why are Americans so miserable?
I've been around the world. Sure, the world and other countries have their problems, but America seems to be filled with people who just live for drama. Other countries, people live to work, live to enjoy life, live for many things; even in the bad countries, people have a reason to live; in America, they just drive around aimlessly, in moods, road rage galore, road games, mind games,...it's like and endless parade of rude drones who possess a three word vocabulary "K, gr8, l8r," and that's pretty much it. lol. Seriously, out of all the different countries I've DRIVEN in,...only America seems to be huge on the road rage. For example I could be driving fast because I need to get somewhere, and some ahole behind me decides to follow me and drive really fast, thinking that I'm somehow driving fast to personally play games with HIM.....as if that wasn't self-important and paranoid enough. Yes, only in America does it get THIS bad. Sure it exists elsewhere too, and other countries people blow themselves up, but honestly,.... America seems to suffer from the most "I'm special, I don't care, Move out of my f8cOP*)@# way, F U< i hate everything, " schizoid syndrome I've ever seen. It's a nightmare trying to drive anywhere, you can't really have really meanigful friendships with anyone, because it's all SO shallow, and no one's happy at the end of the day either. It's like a HUUUGE game of make-believe/pretend, it's all brainwashed by the media to top it all off, and it's just...sad. At the end of the day I've concluded that the American people are miserable and divided. They just don't care. And half of them put on a fake facade front for society to appear like they care or that they're smart, with it, happy,..to try to aspire to some "illusion" of greatness or completeness.....but they're still miserable inside, and are just faking it; contributing to the fakeness; the other half..LOL, they just flat out don't care and let it be known. Americans are also completely divided on political issues, racial issues, EVERYTHING. Even yahoo answers, someone always has to post a smart alecky response; then you have the know it alls, sociopaths, crazies,..all sorts of undesisrables. yes we even have our normal and great people thank GOD, because they offer tiny glimmers of hope, but most of this country has plunged into an immature cesspool of hell, and it wears on everyone eventually. It's just so...stupid. There's no culture, no pride, no soul, no nothing. Just mindless consumerism, and crap, bs. But my biggest question is,.. WHYYYYYYYYYYY!!!?!?! If we really are that much better off than alot of the world, then WHY are we still so miserable? My basic impression of Americans, and believe me , I'm AMERICAN..I'm just speaking on my other fellow citizens..they're either in two broad categories: either 1)ruthless dreamers; stuck in the clouds people who will stop at nothign to live in their delusions and achieve their dreams, and REFUSE to see things how they really are and 2)people who have no hope, have given up, and expect life to suck, and enjoy seeing others suffer. There is really a VERY low amount of 3)normal, sane, and realistic Americans. You may find them in textbooks or something, but not in real life. What the hell? (more...)

Open Question: How does Bourdieu's sociology fit into a Marxist argument?

Open Question: how would you explain the fregmentation of the philippines between the majority and minority cultures.?

Open Question: List down few good things in western culture that India lacks?

Open Question: I'm agnostic who is in a religiously conflicted bind. Would appreciate any advice from all sides.?
Okay, so I'm going to give a whole lowdown on my spiritual bind that I'm for whoever cares to listen and help me out. I don't know what to do and am being pressured from different sides in terms of religion. My mom was Jewish and I went to a Jewish Sunday school until around 4th grade, though I was never particularly religious. 4 years ago when I was in 6th grade, my mom died from a long battle with cancer and my sister converted to Christianity not long before that. My dad is not very religious though he comes from a Catholic family. I went a handful of times to Church over about two years following my mom's death because my sister wanted me to. After that I stopped going because it felt exactly like my old Jewish Sunday school, where whatever religious talk the preachers/rabbis/whatever said was accepted by all, only this time they were also preaching about Jesus. This made me feel weird about it, and gave me a sense that it wasn't totally genuine (this Church is apparently the best church in the area that I live in, Dallas). I never really got explanation or anything over why the teachings I was given in Church about Jesus and whatnot were true as opposed to what I learned being brought up Jewish, or vice versa. To put it really simply, I was just expected to accept whatever I was told. This caused me to think a lot about religion and god and the nature of all that. I mean whose to say that either side is right? They both are apparently speaking the word of God. It seemed like a question with no answer. As I pondered the question, I started looking at man's history of religion in general, at evolution, at a history of polytheism in all parts of the world, that only converted after they were forced to when conquered by a monotheistic culture. I decided not to affiliate myself with anyone, and remain agnostic. I am open to the possibility of God giving me a sign, or someone showing me the light, but I just have yet to see any such signs. Over Christmas, however, my Grandmother, who is admittedly very controlling and opinionated (very much like Lucille from Arrested Development if you watch that show :/), told me that her only wish before she dies is to see me baptized. I know she means well, but I also think it was not her place to say that. Nonetheless, it's made me feel very guilty the more I thought about it, which I kind of think was her intention. I don't feel any connection with any religion at the moment. I've been to Church and I've been to Synagogue. None of it feels right to me. I don't really know what to do. If God came down and gave me a sign I'd be open to it, as would I if someone truly enlightened me or something, but until then I'm stuck sitting here feeling guilty and conflicted. If you've read this far I thank you so much, and I would appreciate some advice on the matter. I'd love to know what you think or what you'd do if you were me, or anything really. (more...)
