Seconds of Pleasure
Seconds of Pleasure Though Rockpile managed only one, nigh-perfect album at the height of the '80s new wave boom, its members--Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Billy Bremner, and Terry Williams--had played together in various incarnations, in some instances for over a decade: Edmunds and drummer Williams had been in the '60s power trio Love Sculpture; all had played on Lowe's '78 album Jesus of Cool and Edmunds's '79 collection Repeat When Necessary. But Seconds of Pleasure became their most complete and satisfying pop statement--if their ironic swan song, as well. This newly remastered collection features the complete original album, as informed and vibrant a tribute to American rockabilly and R&B roots (with an amped-up take of Joe Tex's "If Sugar Was as Sweet as You" and inviting reworkings of Gene Chandler's "Teacher Teacher" and Chuck Berry's obscure "Oh What a Thrill") as any contemporary group has ever managed--especially considering three quarters of the material is either Rockpile originals or contemporary compositions, like "Wrong Again" by Squeeze songwriters/mainstays Difford and Tilbrook. The generous slate of bonus tracks features all four acoustic, live-in-the studio tracks from the Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds Sing the Everly Brothers tribute EP distributed with initial pressings of the LP; two fine live BBC recordings from '77; a cover of Graham Parker's "Back to Schooldays"; a band original, "They Called It Rock"; and a blistering live rendition of Parker's "Crawling from the Wreckage" from one of the band's last appearances together at the Concert for Kampuchea. Though Lowe may now downplay them as "a posh bar band" who "specialized in playing Chuck Berry music four times faster than anyone else," Rockpile was truly one of the great rock bands of their--or any--era. --Jerry McCulley

Prelude: The Best of Charlotte Church
Prelude: The Best of Charlotte Church Need more evidence of the record industry's obsession with youth? Consider that budding Welsh diva Charlotte Church was a ripe, old 16 when this, her first greatest-hits anthology was released. Spanning her first four releases, as well as some outside collaborations and unreleased material, this 18-track collection underscores the soprano's seemingly boundless potential--as well as some potential career obstacles ahead. Her crystalline, still-maturing voice is best showcased on classically oriented works like Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Pie Jesu," Franck's "Panis Angelicus," and her now-ubiquitous rendering of Delibes' "Flower Duet." She also excels on folk traditionals such as "She Moved Through the Fair" and "My Langan Love." But overwrought productions like the already-dated "Dream a Dream" and "Habanera," a faux-flamenco take on Bizet, nearly get the best of her. Still, her promising duet with fellow young phenom Josh Groban on "The Prayer" and her mature, dreamy reading of A Beautiful Mind's "All Love Can Be," as well as strong performances on the previously unreleased "It's the Heart That Matters Most" and "Bridge over Troubled Waters," are ample evidence of her potential for rewarding pop crossover--if she doesn't retire by 21. --Jerry McCulley

Dirty Girls
Dirty Girls Radley Metzger had carved out a nice little career for himself importing and dubbing European erotic dramas (such as I, a Woman) when he decided to direct his own. All that Euro-chic elegance comes through in his first film, The Dirty Girls, a handsome little picture short on story and tame by modern standards (there's more tease than striptease) but full of that happily hedonistic continental attitude. Shot on location in Europe, it's an elegant, low-budget picture about two call girls in the most beautiful cities of the world. In Paris, "the City of Love," a lovely streetwalker on the Champs Élysées spends an evening entertaining a series of clients, one of whom enjoys a woman in uniform. In Munich, "the City of Pleasure," a high-class courtesan brings pleasure to a pair of wealthy patrons while awaiting the return of her lover. Metzger and his cinematographer Hans Jura serve up the flirting and foreplay in a cool, chic black-and-white sheen. It's a modest effort but sets the tone for Metzger's future films: despite the title, Metzger treats sex as anything but dirty and maintains an unusual (for 1964) respect for his heroines. Bonus scenes at the end of the film feature slightly more explicit versions of a few scenes shot for the European market. --Sean Axmaker

Open Question: 2006 Chevrolet Equinox review?
I looked on Edmunds.com and they gave it a good review. Just wanted to hear from some who have worked on them or own one. Are they decent vehicles? Are there a lot of known problems with them? For the price they are (9,000 to 12,000) it almost sounds too good. (more...)

Open Question: anyone know any good reliable websites to determine market value of a car?
I just totaled my car and I think the other party's insurance company is trying to screw me. I'm looking for a bunch of websites to find the average market value of my car. I already tried KBB.com, edmunds.com, and nada.com. does anyone know of other reliable websites? And how come they don't have to reimburse me for the sales tax, title transfer and registration fees of my new car? Anybody have advice on this one? thanks a lot. (more...)

Open Question: Which car would be best for me to buy?
*** A LITTLE BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON ME *** My car recently broke down for good. I was not anticipating having to buy a new car so suddenly. I'm trying to pay off credit card debts and debts from college so I can finally move out of my parents' house. I don't want to spend a whole lot for a car, but I want something that will last a while and be reliable. I drive a lot (work is a 30 mi away, I work 5 days a week, doctor appt's once a week, 90 mi of driving both ways on that day including driving to work). I'm considered a high-risk driver on insurance until the end of September '09. Anything above a 2006 is too expensive to insure. I don't know much about cars and I've been hearing a lot of mixed reviews on the three I have chosen. Here are the three: *** THE THREE CARS I'M LOOKING AT *** 1. 2005 Dodge Stratus 42,000 mi $6,995 Power everything Cruise control 4 Cylinder 2. 2006 Hyundai Accent 51,279 mi $7,995 4 Cylinder 3. 2006 Chevy Cobalt LS 27,000 mi $9,000 4 Cylinder Cruise Control (I think ...) Comes with GM 100,000 mi bumper to bumper warranty with roadside assistance, etc. *** WHY I CAN'T DECIDE *** Chevy's seem to get mixed reviews. Some really like them, some think they're junk. Same for the Dodge Stratus. Some really like them (like my dad who knows a lot about cars), some don't (my boyfriend who said the Stratus was built after the Intrepid, which was built after his crappy Eagle Vision.) The Stratus also gets mixed reviews on Edmunds.com. A lot of people seem to have transmission problems with them. Accents get good reviews. Even though the Accent doesn't have the best mileage in the bunch or a warranty, the reputation makes me notice it. The awesome GM warranty on the Cobalt and the extremely low mileage is a huge threat to the other two, however, my 65-year old mentor (pretty smart guy involved in politics, economy, etc), says GM is on its way out, and while someone will inevitably buy it out, my warranty might not be any good. Does anyone have any input on this? Any suggestions for which car I should pick? /*** RESPONSE **/ I know that Toyotas and Hondas are the best. I really want a Toyota Yaris, however, they are newer models and not only cost more, but I cannot insure them. Honda Civics, even years old and with lots of miles on them still run around $15,000 ... wayyyy too much. Same with Nissans. I have looked into them all. I don't want to spend over 9k and I don't want to get a car older than a 2005. Autotrader is where I found these three. I live in Indiana. (more...)

Voting Question: Will living at home in your mid twenties and having a stupid looking car ever get you a girlfriend?
So yea, I am in my mid twenties and since graduation I moved home to help save money. I dont plan on living there forever, but at least to I have a steady job and a enough saved for a good down payment on a house. I also drive a 2 door toyota RAV 4, which in my opinion is one of the ugliest car on the road. http://www.edmunds.com/pictures/VEHICLE/1996/Toyota/4273/1996.toyota.rav4.10171-300x189.jpg Will this scare the ladies away?
