Steve Reich 1965-1995

In the afterglow of his 60th birthday in 1997, Nonesuch Records delivered Steve Reich and his listeners an immense gift, this 10-CD retrospective of his work for the label, extending from his earliest tape-manipulation pieces to his most recent compositions utilizing samplers and the video artistry of Beryl Korot. Aside from the ear's liquid sense-making when it hears the dense and limber marimbas of Reich's
Six Marimbas or his taut, dizzying
Piano Phase, there is a physical response almost inevitable in Reich's music. It stuns and holds you. And he knows it.
It's Gonna Rain struck an early chord of inventiveness, featuring an African American Pentecostal preacher's sermon and eventually spinning the title phrase into a jangling repetition of single words. Percussion works abound here:
Clapping and
Drumming stun with their deceptive similarity and warm clarity. Perennial favorite
Piano Phase features pianists Nurit Tilles and Eduard Neumann synched up on two pianos and careening at full tilt in unison before their four hands fall out of time and phrase with each other, only to realign in a powerful swooping demonstration of energy and focus. The latter CDs hold abundant delights, many revealing Reich's late-discovered spiritualism and Judaica:
Different Trains' examination of the Holocaust;
Tehillim's shimmering Hebrew texts sung with fascinating choral power;
Proverb's invocation of Perotin. Closing the set are recent pieces:
Nagoya Marimbas, and the sampler-rich
City Life and
The Cave.

Rounders 3

In this edition of "Rounders 3", all three of Evans' classic Rounders tales are here, "The Rounders", "The Great Wedding", and "The Orange County Cowboys", accompanied by the wonderfully authentic drawings of cowboy artist Grem Lee. In "The Rounders", Dusty meets a roan named Old Fooler, a horse whose hooves should be cloven, he's so mean-spirited. When Dusty's not trying to send Old Fooler back to the devil, he is nursing the wounds, both physical and emotional, inflicted by the evil horse. In "The Great Wedding", Dusty arranges to marry off his buddy, Wrangler, to a rich woman in Santa Fe, so they can all live happily ever after. High society in the Hi Lo Country will never be the same after a brush with these two rowdy range riders. And in the final, Spur-Award winning Novella "The Orange County Cowboys", modern times catch up with Wrangler and Dusty when their boss, Jim Ed Love, plans to sell his ranch, their only home, to a Japanese investor.

An Outdoor Family Guide to Rocky Mountain National Park 2nd Edition

Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park offers an unparalleled playpen for parents and their kids. But in order to enjoy this spectacular area to the fullest, parents should know how and where to recreate with their children. The
Outdoor Family Guide to Rocky Mountain National Park provides both practical advice and trip destinations--with ample consideration for little kids' needs and their parents' sanity. From the get-go, the author lays down the ground rules for successfully enjoying the outdoors with children in tow: "your wilderness experience is going to be radically changed ... traveling with children limits the scope of your activities, requires substantial planning for each outing, and demands a significant outlay of parental energy to ensure that your children's needs are satisfied." To this end, the guide offers hiking tips ("dehydration causes crankiness in children"), how-tos for enjoying the park safely (for instance, what to do in a thunderstorm), and a listing of special gear requirements. In addition, an overview chapter lists visitor centers and museums, and provides specific information on how to do all those things kids love--exploring, horseback riding, rafting, and biking--within the park. The rest of the book is devoted to trails, with hiking descriptions and at-a-glance details (difficulty, distance, usage, and elevation gain) to help you discern which trails are appropriate for you and your young trekkers. With this guidebook in hand, you'll also be able to dazzle your children by pointing out the flora and fauna, as well as local historical landmarks and facts. Detailed maps are also included. With a little courage, and plenty of sunscreen, sensibility, and snacks, both parents and their children can expect a wonderful wilderness adventure in the Colorado Rockies.

Resolved Question: Rockies reject Met offer of Heilman for Street & counter by asking for Feliciano too - Should the Mets accept?
Aaron Heilman and Huston Street at both arbitration eligible the next two seasons. Feliciano was paid 1.05 million last season. Heilman was paid 1.2 million. Both of them should get raises of roughly about $500,000 to $700,000. Huston Street was paid 3.3 million last season. He didn't end the year as a closer so his salary shouldn't rise much. And if he's traded to the Mets, he'll be an 8th inning set up man. So his salary is comparable to that of Heilman and Feliciano's included.Colorado's interested in Heilman and would plan on using his as a starting pitcher The Rockies are reported to be pursuing a left-handed reliever and it'd be more affordable to acquire the mediocre Feliciano than sign a reliever like Will Ohman. Feliciano's had better seasons in the past and needs a change of scenary like Heilman. The Rockies wouldn't be as interested in Schoenweis who's paid 3.6 next season.
I think it's a lot to give up for Street, but it's still probably worth it. Heilman won't get them Street alone. I thought it'd take a mid-level prospect/possibly major league ready player like Nick Evans or Mike Carp. But Feliciano is worth giving up. The Mets need to commit to a complete overhaul of their bullpen. Moving Feliciano would require the Mets to possibly sign one or two left-handers though with Schoenweis likely to be traded. I think the trade would be worth it if the Rockies gave the Mets a lower to mid level prospect in the trade.
http://blogs.nypost.com/sports/st/archives/2008/11/3_down_street_h.html
Left-handed hitters batted .178, had a .243 On Base Percentage & .277 slugging against him. So he might be a legitimate source as a left-handed specialist. But I think it'd still be in the best interests of everyone to look to trade him. Whether that is to St. Louis, Detroit or who ever.
Huston Street won't be paid closer's money next season because he didn't end the year as Oakland's closer and it'd be obvious he wouldn't be in the closer's role for the Mets. He might actually command more in Colorado with the uncertainty, although Corpas is likely to assume the role.
Street was paid 3.3 million last season. The most he'll get is 4 million which isn't closer's money. It's like a really good set up man's money. It's less than what Scott Linebrink and Octavio Dotel got last year. But it's about what Juan Cruz will get.
I think more highly of Feliciano than Schoenweis too. But his ERA has got up a run a year in the last two years. It went from 2.09 in '06 to 3.09 in '07 to 4.05 in '08. He's been on a steady decline. His decline from being one of the better situational lefty's to average to slightly below average has paralleled the Mets rise and decline in the past three seasons so it might be time for him to go.
There's no way Huston Street ends up the closer for the Mets. He was knocked out of the role in Oakland. He's a good back up option as you've mentioned though. They'd still need to find a good set up man like Juan Cruz if they were to make him the closer though. They'll sign K-Rod. Who else can? Or Fuentes at the very least. They'll get them down to lower prices. Or Wood or Hoffman at the very least.
The statistics I provided for left-handed hitter's numbers against was for Schoenweis.
I don't consider Huston Street to be among the top 10 closer's in baseball. Maybe not even in the top 20. If he were, why would Oakland knock him out of the role? Why would the Rockies not consider him their closer over Manny Corpas who alike was knocked out of the role?
Street's got potential. But his value would be more served as an 8th inning set up man for the Mets than a closer. As a Phillies fan, it'd only be natural to want to see him be the closer of the Mets over K-Rod or Fuentes lol But we all know that's not going to happen. The Mets bullpen was a mess and the last thing they need is a question mark closer.

Resolved Question: Should we be afraid of an Obama dictatorship?
Georgia congressman warns of Obama dictatorship
By BEN EVANS ? 1 hour ago
WASHINGTON (AP) ? A Republican congressman from Georgia said Monday he fears that President-elect Obama will establish a Gestapo-like security force to impose a Marxist or fascist dictatorship.
"It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he's the one who proposed this national security force," Rep. Paul Broun said of Obama in an interview Monday with The Associated Press. "I'm just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may ? may not, I hope not ? but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism."
Broun cited a July speech by Obama that has circulated on the Internet in which the then-Democratic presidential candidate called for a civilian force to take some of the national security burden off the military.
"That's exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it's exactly what the Soviet Union did," Broun said. "When he's proposing to have a national security force that's answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he's showing me signs of being Marxist."
Obama's comments about a national security force came during a speech in Colorado about building a new civil service corps. Among other things, he called for expanding the nation's foreign service and doubling the size of the Peace Corps "to renew our diplomacy."
"We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set," Obama said in July. "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."
Broun said he also believes Obama likely will move to ban gun ownership if he does build a national police force.
Obama has said he respects the Second Amendment right to bear arms and favors "common sense" gun laws. Gun rights advocates interpret that as meaning he'll at least enact curbs on ownership of assault weapons and concealed weapons. As an Illinois state lawmaker, Obama supported a ban on semiautomatic weapons and tighter restrictions on firearms generally.
"We can't be lulled into complacency," Broun said. "You have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany. I'm not comparing him to Adolf Hitler. What I'm saying is there is the potential."
Obama's transition office did not respond immediately to Broun's remarks.

Resolved Question: Mets Fans Would This Save Our Team?
First and foremost I am distraught over the fact history has repeated itself 2 straight seasons. In which, we had the NL East for virtually the whole year only to give it up in the end. What made matters even worse is that we beat the Phillies more times this year than they beat us. Something we could not say a year ago.
Anyways, our bullpen is a joke and they should give us a public apology for sucking. Billy Wagner is old and although he had a good year he makes me shaky because even though he throws with speed he is unbridled w/ his pitches. The rest of the bullpen is a joke.
In regards to our starters we have a good starting rotation but I think Pedro's time is up he has a huge contract and was brought here for the sole purpose of a WS. He has not lived up to the promise is just getting injured. The same as Orlando Hernandez we should get rid of him. Then we can make a run for the AL leader in strikeouts AJ Burnett he is likely to opt out and we would have Johann the best pitcher in the league w/ Burnett one of the best. We can also pickup JJ Putz he can be in our pen and definetly go after K. Rod who is a FA. We would have 2 of the best pitchers and the best closer in baseball.
As for the infield keep David Wright he was an emotional wreck he cares about winning. Yes, he hasnt come up big in the clutch, but he is young and a great player give it more time. Delgado should also stay he was great this year. Jose Reyes came up with a big hit should stay is very fast and blossoming into one of the best SS's in baseball. Luis Castillo that bum has to go trade him to Houston let us bring back Kazuo Matsui he is a better hitter, a much better fielder, and clutch look at what he did in Colorado. He is also a good base stealer that can compliment the greatness of Reyes in that aspect. Also Beltran is a good base stealer as well. This year as a Stro Matsui played behind Mark Loretta a more defensively sound 2Bmen. With the Mets Matsui would do good as our first option.
As for the OF get rid of Anderson, Alou, Pagan, Nixon, and Church who really screwed with us. Started off, fine then fucked it up beyond repair, and Evans. Then look to get Morgan Ensberg he is a great hitter and would give the Mets an added bat. Also the Mariners and Ichiro are having trouble lure him in he would be great in NY. He can do anything.
2009 Mets:
Starting Rotation:
1. Johann Santana
2. A.J. Burnett
3. Oliver Perez
4. John Maine
5. Mike Pelfrey
Bullpen:
Closer: K. Rod
7. JJ Putz
8. Aaron Heilman
---Get new bull pen pitchers
Infield:
C. Brian Schneider - Ramon Castro
1B. Carlos Delgado
2B. Kazuo Matsui - Damien Easley - Argenis Reyes
3B. David Wright - Daniel Murphy
SS. Jose Reyes
Outfield:
RF. Morgan Ensberg - Fernando Tatis
CF. Carlos Beltran - Stepped up; 2 bad in vein -
LF. Ichiro Suzuki - Endy Chavez
I meant Lance Berkman instead of Ensberg. Berkman is a great hitter.
Hey the Tigers did it. The Mets have more $ than them. And we wont suffer the same outcome cause the NL is easier than the AL.
