Downcanyon: A Naturalist Explores the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon
Downcanyon: A Naturalist Explores the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon Every writer comes to the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon with a unique point of view. Ann Zwinger's is that of a naturalist, an "observer at the river's brim." Teamed with scientists and other volunteer naturalists, Zwinger was part of an ongoing study of change along the Colorado. In all seasons and all weathers, in almost every kind of craft that goes down the waves, she returned to the Grand Canyon again and again to explore, look, and listen. From the thrill of running the rapids to the wonder in a grain of sand, her words take the reader down 280 miles of the "ever-flowing, energetic, whooping and hollering, galloping" river. Zwinger's book begins with a bald eagle count at Nankoweap Creek in January and ends with a subzero, snowy walk out of the canyon at winter solstice. Between are the delights of spring in side canyons, the benediction of rain on a summer beach, and the chill that comes off limestone walls in November. Her eye for detail catches the enchantment of small things played against the immensity of the river: the gatling-gun love song of tree frogs; the fragile beauty of an evening primrose; ravens "always in close attendance, like lugubrious, sharp-eyed, nineteenth-century undertakers"; and a golden eagle chasing a trout "with wings akimbo like a cleaning lady after a cockroach." As she travels downstream, Zwinger follows others in history who have risked—and occasionally lost—their lives on the Colorado. Hiking in narrow canyons, she finds cliff dwellings and broken pottery of prehistoric Indians. Rounding a bend or running a rapid, she remembers the triumphs and tragedies of early explorers and pioneers. She describes the changes that have come with putting a big dam on a big river and how the dam has affected the riverine flora and fauna as well as the rapids and their future. Science in the hands of a poet, this captivating book is for armchair travelers who may never see the grandiose Colorado and for those who have run it wisely and well. Like the author, readers will find themselves bewitched by the color and flow of the river, and enticed by what's around the next bend. With her, they will find its rhythms still in the mind, long after the splash and spray and pound are gone.

Resolved Question: Best places to see in Downtown Denver?
My boyfriend and I have lived in Colorado our whole lives but haven't really explored downtown Denver. We just want to spend the day walking around Denver and seeing all of the old buildings. Can anyone recommend the best ones to see or a website or book that would be a good guide? We are planning on spending money on parking and lunch but don't want to spend any other money. Thanks. Resolved Question: What is the attitude in France toward handguns, and can I get in trouble for selling a handgun in France?
Here's the deal - I went on a holiday to France (my fourth visit; I wanted to explore the "French Colorado" in Provence this time), but I accidentally brought a loaded handgun in my luggage. Airport security missed it. So, when I found the handgun in my suitcase at the hotel in Paris, I was very surprised. I was also worried, because I had no legal permits to possess it in France. So, I looked up information about "les banlieues" on the internet, and drove my rental car to a city called Clichy-sous-Bois outside of Paris. I drove into the apartment towers and rode around until I saw some black dudes selling drugs. Fortunately, one of them was from Nigeria and spoke English (my French is acceptable, but not great), and I made a deal to sell him the handgun and ammunition for 250 Euros. But now I feel kind of guilty and worried that I contributed to the crime situation in the Paris suburbs, because the guys who bought the gun were clearly criminals and drug dealers. What is the general attitude in France toward handguns, and could I get in any legal trouble for my gun sale? Assume I'm currently in London. Can they extradite me or something? Should I leave back to the US? I wish it WERE false, actually. If so, I could avoid these worries. (more...)

Resolved Question: Starting salary for a micro brewer?
I'm exploring career options, and I would like to know the starting salary for a micro brewer making beer. Possibly in Boulder, Colorado. Update to question ::: Yes, I realize that I do have to go to college, and get a masters, I'm aware of this. I'm a senior in highschool, and I've been accepted to CU Boulder. I want to major in microbiology, and I know that becoming a brewmaster is a potential option for me. (more...)

Resolved Question: I wanna do a multi-day hike, kinda like some bear grylls type stuff but less raw food. Any ideas?
So me and my buddy love the movie "Into the Wild" and we really wanna leave Dallas Texas for a bit. We wanna explore nature, through mountains, woods, rivers, etc. We are willing to set up camp and eat our own made food. We were hoping the expedition could happen over the course of 4 days or so. Any ideas? Like stated before we live in Dallas Texas and were looking to take a bus or ride share with someone to near by states such as Colorado, New Mexico, or even somewhere else in Texas. Please give ANY idea you have. THANKS! Oh and I don't wanna spend money to join some tour, I just wanna take a bus to somewhere, hitch hike somewhere, then start walking! (more...)

Resolved Question: Why is the media not talking about Obama and his connection with ACORN & their multi-state lawsuits for fraud?
ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) has been charged with voter registration fraud in many states. Workers paid by [liberal Democrat voter registration group ACORN] to register voters in Franklin County [Ohio] alone have turned in more than 500 forms with nonexistent addresses and potentially fake signatures, said elections officials (in Franklin County, Ohio alone)... Elections workers verifying new-voter forms discovered signatures with the same handwriting, addresses that were for vacant lots and incorrect information for voters who already were registered. ACORN has been implicated in voter registration fraud in several states, including Colorado, Michigan, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin. The media talks about Obama's Community Organizer background, but intentionally leave out that he was directly involved in ACORN. If Community Organizing is the lion's share of Obama's resume, then why are they not exploring his involvement in the fraud? Tabitha and Art of War, was the question too difficult to understand? This question has nothing to do with Exxon, McCain or anything other than what it asked. Are you too blind in your own faith to answer a simple question? Source? this is common knowledge. If you knew the Candidate, then you should know Obama's associations with ACORN and Project Vote. If you do not, then shame on you! You have a responsibility as a voter to know the candidates and the issues. It is obvious that you do not. Blind faith is what drove Mohammed Atta and the others to crash planes into the WTC and Pentagon. (more...)
