I got a 10 gallon aquarium for my already sick betta fish on monday. I got him a water heater to keep the water at the temperature is needs to be at. He had fin rot and some large white spots on his body when I did this, and he was starting to improve, but now he has taken a sudden turn for the worst. I noticed it yesterday. He had developed a large white spot on his head similar to the ones near the base of his body. His fin rot is back in full swing and it's worse then ever now. The underside of his body is falling apart and it looks like in shreds. His right eye is also pure black now while the other is kinda golden, I guess. He won't eat at all. I placed a pellet of his food right over his mouth and he nudged it then swam away. He just floats around the top of his tank all day and it doesn't seem like he can swim down. He hasn't eaten since Saturday. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong with him? I've been researching and nothing sounds like it. I can post a picture if you need it to visualize his condition. I took him to the pet store and the manager there told me that it was because his water was toxic, but it can't be that now that he's got 10 gallons of fresh water. I've also noticed that he hasn't left any droppings in a while. I can't remember when this started, but I can't treat constipation if he won't eat. (more...)

Hello. My fiance who has been into fish for a few years had got me into them so I decided to get myself a 55gl tank sometime last year, maybe in August. My Electric Blue was the 2nd fish in my tank. When I first bought him (I asked for a male and this is what I was given), he was such a bright beautiful blue, very pretty fish to look at. I was feeding my two fish the African Cichlid food (picture below). I finished setting up my tank (pots, plants, black gravel) and he was still very pretty. Later on I bought a hood and a light. Sometime after that I bought some "African Cichlid Mix" shells (not really sure of the name anymore, but from the same store I bought my EB). Its purpose is to set the right PH and Alkaline for the tank. Well, stupid me didnt rinse the shells first and just dumped the bag in.....with the fish still inside the tank. Eventually after a bunch of water changes that night, the water cleared and everything was fine. I figured my tank was still going through its changes and maybe my fish were freaked out so I waited a while till I got more fish. After some time had passed, I bought a few more fish and about a week later my tank got infected with ick (I think one of the new fish might have been sick). Anyways, after the ick went away I started to notice that my EB wasnt as bright as he used to be, but all my other fish were still the same bright color they always were. I decided to change their food to the Color Pellets to make him bright again (the Krill I've been giving them since day one, along with the Algae Waffers for my pleco). Well, needless to say I dont think the color pellets are doing a damn thing for my EB. All my other fish are just as bright as day one (all from the same store....except one, he died from the ick, I think got my tank infected in the first place). I'm posting some links below of some "before and after" pictures of my EB. The Alkaline and PH are the same as its been since day one.....I dont think that stupid Cichlid mix did anything except turn my water into chocolate milk. Anyway, Is there anyway I can get this lil guy's color back out? Is HE really a SHE and thats why it lost its color? Is he old already? Did I screw up my ONE fish's color? Whats the deal? Do you know what its called, or who makes it? Is it for any particular illness, or is it just simply a Cichlid buffer salt? Well, I ran out and tried to find a cichlid salt, but only found "API Aquarium Salt". Is this ok or should I return it and check a different store? I tried looking it up online to see if it was ok with africans, and a few pages said it was. I'd still like to get some other opinions on it. Also, is this ok to use with my pleco? (more...)

I've got to write an application to deffer from college for a year, and we have to state; 1. Our reasons for why we're doing it and; 2. Why they should allow it. I've tried to put them into paragraphs but I don't know what to include/ditch, it just sounds like pity-fishing if I include it all. My reasons are; ~Parents split in the middle of the year, disrupting plans for my future living and transport arrangements and my relationship with both of them (the good one moved away while the other one went on a 2 month holiday). ~Financial instability (as a result), so I started working more and uni slipped from its priority podium. ~Then influenza (coupled with the recent events) lead to an eating disorder/mild depression. That got my head so screwed I just forgot to care about uni (or anything) & had no motivation to even leave the house, let alone do my essays. I two subjects, BARELY passed one because the essay was 3 days late, but got a distinction in the one that I had completed before I got "sick". I never told a doctor or anything because I didn?t see the point, and I wasn?t really looking at the bigger picture. I also don't know how to explain why it took me so long without sounding like I don't give a damn about college. We were supposed to have enrolled in all our classes by now! I love it there, I really do- and I could do really great, but if I went back now (I?m still not 100% the way I used to be) I know I wouldn?t reach my potential. BESIDES, I left it too late anyway because I was being an idiot. I just need a structure for a letter explaining that somehow less ?personally? if you know what I mean. ANY ideas would be greatly greatly appreciated. Thankyou so much boots! That really really helped. I think I needed someone else to write it out so I could just take a step back from it. Lol. It all sounds ridiculous, even though it's true it wasn't nearly as bad as it reads. I think a cropped (of some parts) and toned-down version of that will do perfectly. Thanks agian so much.
