The Foundation: A Great American Secret; How Private Wealth is Changing the World

Foundations are a peculiarly American institution. They have been the dynamo of social change since their invention at the beginning of the last century. Yet they are cloaked in secrecy- their decision-making and operations are inscrutable to the point of obscurity-leaving them substantially unaccountable to anyone.
Joel Fleishman has been in and around foundations for almost half a century...running them, sitting on their boards, and seeking grants from them. And in this groundbreaking book he explains the history of foundations, tells the stories of the most successful foundation initiatives-and of those that have failed-and explains why it matters.
The baby boomer generation is going to participate in the largest transfer of wealth in history when it passes on its assets to its successor generation. The third sector is about to become more powerful than ever. This book shows how foundations can provide a vital spur to the engine of the American, and the world's, economy-if they are properly established and run.

Open Question: Ex's Psycho Parents...Heartbroken =[?
Soooo, my (now ex) boyfriend and I have been best friends for over two years, and been together for over 8 months. During this time I moved away to Louisiana, discovered I was pregnant, he moved to live there with me while I was attending college, I had a miscarriage, and since then we have had several tragedies all with his parents working against us, even using excuses like "GOD doesnt want you two to be together". really petty, ignorant BS. His mom hates my guts since he was her baby boy, and he left her basement for me. (she has issues cutting the cord apparently) well they forced him home due to his lack of funds and the fact that he was still on all their insurances since he is in college. Since we were home we have had to secretly meet up as best friends but have had very romantic times, the way things used to be. New years eve, instead of partying we planned a romantic night, and well things were going fine until we pulled into a gas station and discovered his dad FOLLOWEDDDD his adult son to my house and saw him pick me up, etc. He went home and since them I have not seen him or heard as much as a peep from him. They have his cell phone, and his laptop and do everything in their power to make sure he does not see me. I am leaving back to Louisiana tomorrow and I am literally a mess. I have been heartbroken over this whole thing and it has caused me issues with eating and sleeping. They even banned his best friend from talking to him because they knew his best friend had gotten to know me, and talks to me. His other friend (who the parents allow him to talk to) told me nothing is going to change even when im in LA. I am extremely heartbroken, and feel as though my best friend in the whole world has literally died. id give anything to see him. I dont really know what to do with life anymore. HELP.
UPDATE: we broke up because his parents told him if he kept seeing me they would remve him off health and car insurances, take his jeep, wouldnt pay for school, and would kick him out of the house. Oh, and God's "vision" to her that we werent meant to be together... demented people.
Oh, and i cant really tell him anything they have his phone
I think i may have went a little overboard though, i texted his mother saying: "Just so you know alot of people who know your family find it sick that you dont want your son to be happy. You'll regret it one day when he is tired of the way you treat him and he leaves you. I'll pray for you."

Open Question: Where were the dishes Laura Bush purchased made?
I agree with many responders that it isn't an issue of "can she" or "if it was funded by a private foundation". It is an issue of sensitivity, discernment, common sense and awareness of the NEED that exists in our present economic crisis. I don't know if the private foundation would have offered to donate the funds to FEED hungry children, provide EDUCATION to areas hit by major education cutbacks due to loss of tax revenue or some other worthy cause, and there are so many. A discerning empathetic, aware president's wife would have turned down the opportunity to leave this most unnecessary mark on the white house china cabinet given our present economic condition and would have made that request..

Open Question: Places where they should mandate vaccines?
I'm preparing a bill for a debate tem, and i want to do one where certain vaccines are mandated on college campuses, but that is a state issue.. the bill has to be FEDERAL. so are there any loopholes, or can you think of federally funded places where mandating vaccines would be a good idea??

Open Question: Is a "Pet Agreement" payment the same as a non-refundable pet deposit and meant to be applied to any damages?
I made a $3000 security deposit on a property in Texas last year, $600 of which was applied to the "Pet Agreement". Whereas I was under the impression it was a non-refundable pet deposit, this consideration is defined as 'a one-time, non-refundable PAYMENT". I moved out last month and have just received my 'itemized deductions', and that $600 was automatically deducted from the top as "non-refundable portion of deposit per lease agreement", and THEN the pet damages were deducted. $499 for carpet cleaning, $280 for carpet repair, $138 scratch on door, etc. etc. Bottom line is landlord is requesting an additional $556 (of 'damages' that are a whole separate issue of 'normal wear and tear'). My question is this, is that pet agreement payment basically considered 'pocket money' or a fee for ALLOWING the pet? I have searched and searched and cannot find anything that specifically addresses whether those funds have to be applied to property damage or not.

Open Question: Bringing the NRA To School?
I'm a freshman in a private high school in Nevada. I have a clean record, no detentions etc. at school and I've been gaining reputation as "the gun kid" because many of my classmates found my shooting videos on Youtube.com/dawok370. I'm also acknowledged as being fairly fluent in firearms, at least compared to everyone at school. Now, as an Expert rank of the NRA, I want to try and start an NRA Club, maybe by a miracle bring back a rifle team. I am by no means trying to find a way to get everyone to bring firearms to school, just to simply bring more members to the NRA and provide education about safety, etc. I thought this would be the best time to actually start an NRA club.
I also have the full support of the Silver State Shooting Association, the branch of the NRA in Nevada. I can talk to my NRA administrators to send one of the many instructors to talk to my school. I've also been e-mailing my principal back and forth about this issue, sending her all she needs to know about the NRA including their website link, and this PDF file:
http://www.rmgo.org/images/GunFacts4-2-Press.pdf
If this is successful, then my instructors can provide the safety classes at school and then have target practice at another location after school, the same way the swim meets are held at YMCA since we don't have a pool or soccer practice is at another field since we don't have a soccer field. Since the school makes quite a lot of money, I have a feeling it will sponsor the target practice at the range, otherwise I doesn't cost very much(like $5.00) so the students themselves could pay for it anyway. I have 3 locations that I can think of, there are more that I don't know about. They are the American Shooters Gun Range, which has limited space and lots of fees. The Tule Springs Skeet Shooting range which is the most probable, but only shotguns are allowed, which might cause some disappointment to people wanting to fire AR-15's and all that. The last range is the NRA Range located in the airspace of Nellis Airforce Base(not the base itself) that I practice at, but it's very far from my school, and the schedules of all the certified instructors may not be able to fit any school schedules.
I've been researching and studying as much as I can remember the gun laws and the most likely of questions to be asked in case I have to speak myself, but as a 14 year old I still have a feeling I have some flaws. The major yet passive problems I see are anti-gun activists, the media, political issues, funding, and... my age.. I need your guy's input on this and fill in anything that I might've missed...some advice would be appreciated.
I also have been e-mailing my principal back and forth about this issue and would like to talk to me personally, and no my school does not have JROTC. There are, however, teachers who have served in the military. I've also been providing my principal with links to gun control myths and facts videos and etc. Meanwhile I'm trying to do all I can so my principal isn't able to say no.
To mramell48:
The whole reason I'm doing this is because of the SAFETY education about firearms. I didn't mention anything about "mature" since in my NRA branch trains children as young as eight years old. We also have just as many adolescents like myself. You are the kind of person I'm trying to change into an educated person.

Open Question: Who do I report my bank to if they are jerking me around? You know kinda a BBB but for banks!?
I made a fraud report with my bank on Dec 22, 2008 beginning with a withdrawal made by someone with my license. Between the 18th and 20th of Dec, whoever stole my license had a field day cashing checks and making withdrawals from my bank account. It has now been 15 days and I still have not received my funds back and they tell me they don't give credits for fraud checks and they have up to 45 days to solve this issue from filing. I just called for an update and the fraud dept told me they had not received the updated signed forms from the 29th, and so nothing has been done towards solving this or me receiving my funds back. The banker that I had signed them with is gone on vacation for the next little over a week! And he didn't turn in the papers as it seems. This has left me totally behind and destitute! Is there someone I can report this too to light a fire under their butts?

Open Question: How do you get yourself out of a rut (long question)?
I'm just looking for other people's stories about how they managed to recover from mental problems, especially when isolated. I've been previously diagnosed with Tourette's (comorbid with OCD, depression and anxiety), BPD and purging disorder. I've gone through extensive treatment in the past, mostly for Tourette's (meds) and social phobia (CBT) which gets really severe when not being treated, but am currently not taking anything.
I moved to Europe about 7 years ago for a relationship. The marriage ended about 1.5 years ago, after he became emotionally abusive and I found out he was torturing (and in one case killed) our pets. I had to move away, because I couldn't find housing in the city I lived (long waiting lists for rentals), and I feel sort of like I've been living out of my suitcase ever since. I tried to get medical help in my new location for managing all the original problems (now with PTSD and frequent panic attacks), but was told the waiting list was over a year, and I didn't have money at the time for private treatment.
I was really bad off for awhile, but managed to get myself together enough for things to seemingly work out. I moved to a new country over the summer, and am seeing specialists now, but the process is very slow.
I thought I was managing okay on my own when I first moved here. I found a great job offshore and felt like I was getting settled for the first time in a few years. Then my father was diagnosed with cancer back in the US, and I had to leave my contract to go back. After staying several weeks, I returned but had a message as soon as I landed that he had caught pneumonia and was very ill. I flew back the next day, only to find out he had died during the night, so I showed up for his funeral.
The two emergency trips set me back thousands of dollars (which I didn't have, since I just moved countries, and unfortunately the airline doesn't offer bereavement fares) and I no longer had a job when I returned. I don't know anyone at all here, I speak a similar language (but have some difficulty with the local dialect, which makes finding new work less easy), and I have no close family or friends elsewhere. My family back in the US either a) has severe mental issues of their own or b) is abusive, and I just can't deal with their problems on top of mine right now. My father was the only one I talked with, and now that he's gone I just feel lost. I had nowhere to stay in the US anyway (so that wasn't an option), no history there (employment, education, credit etc), and I moved away so early (I was 20) that I feel like a complete foreigner.
I'm here because I don't know where else to go, and don't have the funds to move elsewhere anyway. I'm living off savings currently, but it won't last forever. My father's death has really affected me badly, I feel very isolated, and then the job/financial difficulties on top of everything has made me feel pretty awful. I haven't really left my flat since I've returned, except to go to the doctor. Tourette's tics have worsened from anxiety, and I hate going out in public because of it. I've lost more weight than I should (about 15kg in 2 months). I just don't know where to start to change things, everything is unfamiliar and sort of overwhelming.
I'm hoping the doctors can help in some way, but Tourette's makes me very sensitive to medications, so it's taken intensive treatment and a lot of time in the past to even get basic recovery. I don't think I've ever actually felt okay since I was a teenager. And the process, as I mentioned before, is sooo slow. My doctors are afraid to put me on meds because the only ones left to try have bad side effects (tricyclics and MAOIs) and they don't want to make the Tourette's even worse.
What have others in similar situations done to make the necessary changes? How did you get back into the real world without support? Any tips at all would be appreciated.
Please don't mention religion though, the country I live in is very agnostic so it's not a great place for social networking anyway. My ex was also the son of a pastor and very religious, and some of the abuse revolved around that, I really don't want to revisit those emotions right now.

Open Question: I recently left a company who issued cash advances for the purpose of traveling expenses etc?
Two months later and they have contacted me stating that when I left, I had an outstanding balance on my latest advance. They are attempting to recoup the funds. My question is does anyone know what the repercussions of ignoring them would be? Do they have any legal recourse if I ignore them?
