Ancient Landscapes of the Colorado Plateau
Ancient Landscapes of the Colorado Plateau Imagine seeing the varied landscapes of the earth as they used to look throughout hundreds of millions of years of earth history. Tropical seas lap on the shores of an Arizona beach. Immense sand dunes shift and swirl in Sahara-like deserts in Utah and New Mexico. Ancient rivers spill from a mountain range in Colorado that was a precursor to the modern Rockies. Such flights of geologic fancy are now tangible through the thought-provoking and beautiful paleogeographic maps, reminiscent of the maps in world atlases we all paged through as children, of Ancient Landscapes of the Colorado Plateau.Ron Blakey of Northern Arizona University is one of the world’s foremost authorities on the geologic history of the Colorado Plateau. For more than fifteen years, he has meticulously created maps that show how numerous past landscapes gave rise to the region’s stunning geologic formations. Ancient Landscapes of the Colorado Plateau is the first book to showcase Blakey’s remarkable work. His maps are accompanied by text by Wayne Ranney, geologist and award-winning author of Carving Grand Canyon. Ranney takes readers on a fascinating tour of the many landscapes depicted in the maps, and Blakey and Ranney’s fruitful collaboration brings the past alive like never before.Features:

More than 70 state-of-the-art paleogeographic maps of the region and of the world, developed over many years of geologic research

Detailed yet accessible text that covers the geology of the plateau in a way nongeologists can appreciate

More than 100 full-color photographs, diagrams, and illustrations

A detailed guide of where to go to see the spectacular rocks of the region

Your Guide to the Grand Canyon (True North Series)
Your Guide to the Grand Canyon (True North Series) The author of the bestselling (and controversial!) Grand Canyon: A Different View, Tom Vail teams with co-authors Mike Oard, John Hergenrather, and Dennis Bokovoy to present a one-of-a-kind exploration of the Grand Canyon. It is a massive, beautiful natural landmark carved out by water - but was the Grand Canyon formed slowly over millions of years or quickly after the Flood? This is the essential argument between the evolutionary and the creationist points of view. The Canyon's eight million yearly visitors are presented only the evolutionary view - that is, until now. This unique handbook is a detailed guide to the beautiful sights and landmarks of the Canyon and is an essential tool for families and individuals interested in the park. The guide includes significant geological sites, suggestions for visitors (whether you have a lot of time or a little), biological and historical tidbits, and much more. Has over 25 full color fold out pages.

Windows into the Earth: The Geologic Story of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks
Windows into the Earth: The Geologic Story of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks Millions of years ago, the North American continent was dragged over the world's largest continental hotspot, a huge column of hot and molten rock rising from the Earth's interior that traced a 50-mile wide, 500-mile-long path northeastward across Idaho. Generating cataclysmic volcanic eruptions and large earthquakes, the hotspot helped lift the Yellowstone Plateau to more than 7,000 feet and pushed the northern Rockies to new heights, creating the jewel of the U.S. national park system: Yellowstone. Meanwhile, forces stretching apart the western U.S. created the mountainous glory of Grand Teton National Park. Smith and Siegel offer expert guidance through this awe-inspiring terrain, bringing to life the grandeur of these geologic phenomena as they reveal the forces that have shapedand continue to shapethe greater Yellowstone-Teton region. Over seventy illustrations, including fifty-two in full color, illuminate the beauty of the landscape, while two final chapters provide driving tours of the parks to help visitors enjoy and understand the region's wonders.

Resolved Question: What is wrong with using this method of radiometric dating?
I asked this question nearly 2 hours ago in the earth science and geology section and still have no reply. I was hoping that the popular R & S community could answer it to some satisfaction. Here it is: What are some scientific reasons that radiometric dating of diabase sills would be less accurate than other dating methods such as potassium-argon, rubidium-strontium, etc? Some basic background information on the reliability of dating these sills, found in places such as grand canyon strata: Diabase sills are intrusive in relation to formed strata obviously indicating that it is younger than the intruded rock strata but older than that at the base of the intrusion. Diabase sills are highly homogeneous. Diabase sills were rapidly emplaced because of the evidence of rapid injection. Diabase is ideal for whole-rock and mineral isochron dating because of these factors. (more...)

Resolved Question: Could some one please help me make this paragraph make some sense?
The burning of fossil fuels is another leading cause for concern in the Bahamas. These emissions can be seen when you start your car on a cold early morning and the muffler smokes the pavement behind it. This would be true, because the more cars that sit for a longer amount of time on the road; the more CO2 is admitted into the air. It can be seen in the form of smoke in the heavily populated cities like New Providence and Grand Bahama. Many things contribute to global warming. Such things are industries, transportation, electricity used, waste produced, and agriculture. Global Warming is an increase in temperature in the earth?s atmosphere. This increase may be due to the trapping of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, which hold the heat we receive from the sun. Greenhouse gases do not just include carbon. In fact, CO2 is less than 3 percent of all greenhouse gases. Water vapour takes up the other 97 percent. The rest are methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone and trace gases. Many people pollute by burning fossil fuels, which puts carbon into our atmosphere. But plants feed on carbon and release oxygen. A study by Dr. Kevin Telmer, assistant Professor in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria, and Dr. Jan Veizer, Professor of Geology at the University of Ottawa, shows that the larger amounts of water vapour in the atmosphere at higher temperatures permit more carbon to be absorbed by plants. This means that when the world heats and more water is evaporated into the air, plants will absorb more carbon. Therefore, the system regulates itself to deal with climatic changes (EnviroTruth). Before humans inhabited the earth, the world had actually been through far more extreme changes than what we see today. (more...)

Resolved Question: What is the Creationist (YEC not Old Earth) response to Plate Techtonics?
Plate Tectonics are the foundation (no pun intended) of modern Geology. They explain the creation of (non-volcanic) mountains, the Grand Canyon, continental expansion and drift, and the geologic record. This science is well developed (but still ever expanding and vast) and accepted throughout the spectrum of the sciences. Above all, it demands one recognize that the Earth is billions of years old. What is the (Young Earth) Creationist response to this? @ vrzz - Crap, forgot earthquakes. Plate Tectonics explains those too. Thanks for the save. Also I seem to have misspelled "Tectonics" in the actual question. Sorry. (more...)

Resolved Question: Need Help!! What would be a better geological feature to do a final paper on?
I have a final paper coming up and I am trying to choose between doing a paper on the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone National Park's Old Faithful. I would like to know which one would have the most interest for a geology paper and if you could provide me with websites for research, that would be so helpful! Any information known on either of these places would be great too! (more...)

Resolved Question: if intelligent design is allowed to be taught as science...?
should we teach the great flood in geology classes as an explanation for what caused the grand canyon? or perhaps we shouldn't use a biblical reference. we should mask it so some people will be fooled into thinking it's actual geology. what would be a good non-biblical sounding name for the great flood? vishal, yeah i like the intelligent part. as it assumes there was a hand involved in it. i was thinking more along the lines of irrigation though. that's it!!! intelligent irrigation!!! id was created by creationists. anyone who denies this is in serious delusion. do some research on it. keywords: dover school board, intelligent design. it seems Kjelstad got it while i was adding details. good job. Resolved Question: How did mountains rise up underneath fragile clams....?
without destroying them? How did fossils sit for millions of years (some with skin and shape intact) while they were sedimentarily buried without getting eaten or rotting or scattered? How did water flow uphill for millions of years while it carved the grand canyon down to the height of it's source river? Some of the things in these geology books just don't add up. Angela: Pretty precise conditions indeed; being buried quickly, pressure, water; all present during Noah's flood, but not covered under evolutionary theory. Half Man Half Ape Not magic:flood. There's nothing magical about water. Evolution relies on magic in these instances. I understand the answers. The answer is Noah's flood. It accounts for all these things. Those who don't believe in the flood are the ones with these problems. HMHA: Mountains growing may be science, but lifting clams up with them without destroying them is fairytale. jl-water lays down layers quickly, and buries whatever is in them, they were not laid down over millions of years. Where did all this dirt come from, and why didn't it burn up in the atmosphere? (more...)

Resolved Question: Does Paul Bunyan's recently verified existence increase the likelihood of Young Earth Creationism?
Prominent creation scientist Em Adjineri has recently been studying geology and discovered that Paul Bunyan's existence proves that the earth is approximately 6000 years old. Em Adjineri found fossils of Paul Bunyan's blue ox Babe, thus proving the existence of Paul. One of the problems with Young Earth Creationism is its inability to explain the existence of canyons and lakes. Geolutionists claim that they were formed by glaciers and rivers over millions of years. Em Adjineri has proposed a faith-based alternative to this theory, in which Paul Bunyan dug the great lakes and grand canyon in a matter of days. Since it only took days, this makes it possible for the Earth to be much younger than it is. Don't you think this proves the validity of Young Earth Creationism? (more...)

Resolved Question: did you know, that a dead goldfish floating, proves that fossils?
could only have occurred due to the biblical flood? i just witnessed a christian guy on tv, declaring that scientists only can have a hypothesis about ancient events, because they were not there to witness them. he then goes on to explain that the environment for facilitating dinosaur fossils could only have occured during the biblical flood. to further prove this, he uses an analogy. by obseving that a dead goldfish floats when it dies, & other fish eat bits of it, etc, eventually there is nothing left. this somehow proves fossils only could have occured during said flood. good grief. he also griped about his book abt the origins of the grand canyon being taken from shelves on the grounds that it was not scientific. i was wondering do all evangelists discard scientific & geological 'hypothesies, if it conflicts with their faith, but are quick to declare their creationism 'hypothosies' about science & geology to be fact, simply because it renfoces their beliefs? Mike had spoken to the girl that the cops where watching but he did not buy anything from her nor did he know she was selling drugs. Mike is studying geology at SJCC and did have a piece of quarts that he was going to show his teacher, the cop took it and realizing it wasn't cocaine, throw it in the street. The cop stopped another person how did have cocaine on him and the cop put some of that cocaine on Mike.
