Incubated them, they hatched and one survived the hot west sun to fly away. The other died of sun exposure. They are cute and curious but very unwanted on my balcony. My family and I live on 6 acres out in the country and we want to raise chickens for eggs. I was in the FFA for 3 years and we raised them at school so I have a good feel on it. We had them in a coop, It was a wood structure with a door, open spaces with wire net around it, and it had food, water, etc. I thought that if we built the same thing at my house that it would work well. Would it be cheaper and easier to buy the chicks after they are hatched so I dont have to mess with an incubator? I found a website that i really like http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com It seems to have good information and good products. Plus we have big gardens every spring and summer, so we figured we could use the chicken manure. Does this sound like a good idea? Please give any tips and advice! (more...)

It is winter, and it is very, very, snowy. But, about 2 weeks ago, while my parents were putting in hardwood floors in my basement, my mom found this caterpillar. It has a black stripe, then a dark brown stripe , then another black stripe. She didn't bother it, but then 2 days later, I found it in our laundry room. I put out some spinach leaves next to it, and the next day it has eaten almost half of one leaf, which seemed alot for a caterpillar. When my dad had to do some "messy" work with the flooring (lots and lots of sawdust, etc.) I decided to out the caterpillar in an aquarium. There were many leaves. But the caterpillar slowly stopped moving, and now he doesn't move at all. Some of his hair has fallen out, but I don't wan't to put him (or her) outside when its actually hibernating, not dead. How do I tell if he is hibernating or dead? On another note, in the summer at my cottage I found a cocoon underneath some boards that my dad had ordered to make a swimming platform. I rescued the coocoon before the board was used. It has been about two months and the cocoon still hasn't hatched. It still moves sometimes. Do caterpillars in cocoons take all winter to from into butterflies? Will it hatch in the spring? Is it going to die? I read somewhere that cocoons take only 2-3 weeks to hatch. Also, should I take both the caterpillar and cocoon to a museum where someone can take care of them properly and professionally? I am too attached to them to just put them outside. I would need to know that they are safe and that I did not kill them. But I am also scared that the museum would perform experiments on them and such. (more...)
