HISTORY OF THE PANORAMIC MAP

A popular cartographic form used to depict U.S. and Canadian cities and towns during the late 19th and early 20th centuries was the panoramic map. Also known as town views, panoramic maps are not generally drawn to scale. They show street patterns, buildings, and major landscape features in perspective. Preparation of panoramic maps involved a vast amount of painstakingly detailed labor. For each project a frame was developed, showing in perspective the pattern of streets. The artist then walked the streets, sketching buildings, trees, and other features to present a complete landscape as seen from an elevation of 2,000-3,000 feet. These data were then entered on the frame in his workroom. The most successful print publisher in the nineteenth century was Currier and lves. Best remembered for their views of daily life in Victorian America, they also prepared birds-eye views of New York City, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, and Washington. Famous panoramic artists included Albert Ruger, Thaddeus Fowler, and the brothers, O.H and H.H Bailey. Surviving panoramic maps are very popular today and command premium prices from map and print dealers. Panoramic maps give a pictorial record of Anglo-Americas cities during the post-Civil War period and for many localities, provide the sole nineteenth-century perspective of the community. Woodstock - 3 Days of Peace & Music (The Director's Cut)
Woodstock - 3 Days of Peace & Music (The Director's Cut) The three-day Woodstock music festival in 1969 was the pivotal event of the 1960s peace movement, and this landmark concert film is the definitive record of that milestone of rock & roll history. It's more than a chronicle of the hippie movement, however; this is a film of genuine historical and social importance, capturing the spirit of America in transition, when the Vietnam War was at its peak and antiwar protest was fully expressed through the liberating music of the time. With a brilliant crew at his disposal (including a young editor named Martin Scorsese), director Michael Wadleigh worked with over 300 hours of footage to create his original 225-minute director's cut, which was cut by 40 minutes for the film's release in 1970. Eight previously edited segments were restored in 1994, and the original director's cut of Woodstock is now the version most commonly available on videotape and DVD.

The film deservedly won the Academy Award for Best Documentary, and it's still a stunning achievement. Abundant footage taken among the massive crowd ("half a million strong") expresses the human heart of the event, from skinny-dipping hippies to accidental overdoses, to unpredictable weather, midconcert childbirth, and the thoughtful (or just plain rambling) reflections of the festive participants. Then, of course, there is the music--a nonstop parade of rock & roll from the greatest performers of the period, including Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Canned Heat, The Who, Richie Havens, Joan Baez, Ten Years After, Sly & The Family Stone, Santana, and many more. Watching this ambitious film, as the saying goes, is the next best thing to being there--it's a time-travel journey to that once-in-a-lifetime event. --Jeff Shannon

Bounty
Bounty Director Roger Donaldson (Thirteen Days) has breathed vibrant new life into the classic story of the mutiny on the Bounty. With a dream cast--Mel Gibson, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Sir Laurence Olivier, Liam Neeson, and Daniel Day-Lewis--and a script by Robert Bolt (Doctor Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia), The Bounty takes a revisionist tack through the well-charted waters of an oft-told tale. Hopkins's Captain Bligh is no raving sadist in the Charles Laughton mode. (Laughton played Bligh in the first Mutiny on the Bounty, 1935.) Instead, Sir Anthony plays Bligh as a hard-nosed imperialist explorer simply trying to get the job done in the time-honored manner: on the backs of the poor gobs under his command. Still, when Bligh's suppressed powder keg of rage finally blows, Hopkins is formidable indeed. Mel Gibson gives one of the most soulful performances of his career as mutiny leader Fletcher Christian. He's also at the height of his blue-eyed, buff good looks, and his romance with Tahitian maiden Mauatua (lovely Tevaite Vernette) is decidedly erotic. Liam Neeson is a veritable force of nature as the scrappy seaman Charles Churchill, and Daniel Day-Lewis is sublimely hateful as Master John Fryer, a pompous toady. With special effects to rival those of The Perfect Storm, the alluring eye candy of a tall-masted schooner under full sail, lush tropical greenery, and bevies of bodacious South Sea Islands babes, plus a gripping story line, The Bounty deserves a rescue from undeserved obscurity. --Laura Mirsky

Anne of The Thousand Days
Anne of The Thousand Days This lush, perfectly cast 1969 drama concerns both a doomed, royal love affair and a pivotal moment in British history. Based on Maxwell Anderson's 1948 play, Anne of the Thousand Days concerns the mess that surrounded King Henry VIII's decision to rid himself of his first wife, Catherine of Aragon (Irene Papas), and marry the young Anne Boleyn (Geneviève Bujold). Anglophiles know what happened next: Henry (Richard Burton) solved his problems with the Vatican's condemnation of divorce by having himself named head of the Church of England (see also A Man for All Seasons), while Anne's perceived problem conceiving a male heir made her vulnerable to plots by the nefarious likes of Oliver Cromwell (John Colicos). Director Charles Jarrott does a splendid job bringing all of these intrigues to life, though the story is ultimately about Anne, a naive young woman who prepares herself to navigate some of the dangers of Henry's court. Bujold and Burton never gave better performances, and this strange, tragic chapter in the history of the kings of England has never been more compellingly told on film. --Tom Keogh

Roots, Volume 1
Roots, Volume 1 From the moment the young Kunta Kinte (LeVar Burton) is stolen from his life and ancestral home in 18th-century Africa and brought under inhumane conditions to be auctioned as a slave in America, a line is begun that leads from this most shameful chapter in U.S. history to the 20th-century author Alex Haley, a Kinte descendant. The late Haley's acclaimed book Roots was adapted into this six-volume television miniseries, which was a widely watched phenomenon in 1977. The programs cover several generations in the antebellum South and end with the story of "Chicken" George, a freed slave played by Ben Vereen whose family feels the agony of entrenched racism and learns to fight it. Between the lives of Kunta and George, we meet a number of memorable characters, black and white, and learn much about the emotional and physical torments of slavery, from beatings and rapes to the forced separation of spouses and families. Nothing like this had ever confronted so many mainstream Americans when the series was originally broadcast, and the extent to which the country was nudged a degree or two toward enlightenment was instantly obvious. Roots still has that ability to open one's eyes, and engage an audience in a sweeping, memorable drama at the same time. --Tom Keogh

Open Question: For executing the best play in the history of baseball, should Rick Monday be elected into the Hall of Fame?
Baseball is truly an American sport, and what Monday did on that day was heroic. I think that baseball should honor not only those great at the game of baseball, but those that did great things not related to baseball. I am not saying since Josh Hamilton made a big comeback to baseball, he should be elected. But Monday's play was patriotic. I think that the Baseball Hall of Fame should honor him. I want to hear your opinions on this matter. No right or wrong answers, just as long as you respect other people's opinions. (more...)

Open Question: Demonic attack. Advice please?
I've been saved for 11 years. I have 3 sisters and one brother. Just recently one of my sisters was saved (Praise God. Been praying for 10 years for my family.) But no one else is, including my mother. My brother has been struggling financialy and is his spirit is kind of down right now. He has been saying lately that he and his wife want to find a church and start going. I've explained to him about recieving Christ as Savior and confessong your sins etc etc. He has been "close" The other night I get a phone call from my brother. He tells me " Hey bro something weird is going on" He proceeded to tell me that in the past 3-4 weeks he is being attacked. Cubbards in his house are repeatedly opening after he closes them. The Smoke alarms are going off by themselves. Things that require a switch or button to turn on are turning on by themselves. He is seeing shadows from the side of his eyes. He is feeling cold chills in his house. He is waking up every night at about 2 or 3 in the morning by some "stirring". The other night he was awkened again at about the same time. He saw in the dark a shadow walk from the bathroom over to him and leaned over him as if to talk to him. He thought it was his wife and he said "What? What's wrong babe?' Is wife half asleep answered him from behind him and said "What? He then looked back and the shadow was gone. It was so real that he even spoke to it. The next day he was in his house and once again he saw something from the side of his eyes. This time out of anger and frusteration he yelled " Get the F*** out of my house! " Then he quickly calmed down and then said "In The Name of Jesus get out of my house!" He said that after he did that, he went upstairs and as he was walking up the stairs he said he felt a "burning" sensation on his back. He went straight to the bath room mirror and lifted up his shirt and their were multiple scratches on his back. His wife took pictures of them and sent them to me. There they were plain as day looking like cat scratches. (He does not have a cat or any other pets)) That is when he finally called me and told me all this. I was straight with him and asked him what he has been doing to allow this to come in his house. Any dark places or anything like that. Maybe movies or games or anything else of darkness. He sais he has a few vampire movies and the excorcist movies that he has had for years. He promises that he has not changed anything in his routine or been to any places or dabbling in anything like that. He did confide to me that he has been hooked on internet pornography and that it has been getting progressevly worse. I told him that that could be part of it but there's got to be something more. I asked him about the history of his house but he didn't know. He has been there a year. I told him that the devil knows when your down on your luck and he will kick you when your down. After talking with him that night he accepted Christ has his Savior and got rid of a bunch of pornographic material on his computer. That night he slept like a baby. Myself and a couple of Christian friends of mine were going to his house today (Saturday) with some oil and pray over his house and his family (He lives about 2 hours away from me) His wife is out of town for the weekend and she is very adament about being home when we come over so they re-scheduled it for next week. I told him that he shouldn't hold off too long and that the Bible sais that after casting out unclean spirits, if your not carefull then they will come back seven-fold. We sent him a list of churches in the area. So...anyway any advice and prayers would be greatly appreciated. (more...)

Open Question: Horse eats manure, straw, etc?
I just got a horse about 2 months ago that came from a questionable situation. She came from an auction, but the owner said she was 8 yrs old, had been a lesson/4H horse. Its obvious from her behavior under saddle and on the ground that it could not be true. Her teeth show she is closer to 15 yrs old. Anyway... She eats her straw in her stall, along with manure and will forage in the manure pile if she can get to it. She is on a vitamin/mineral supplement and gets plenty of hay. She is also on a small amount of senior feed twice a day. We dont know her history, but she behaves as if she has been abused. She gets very nervous around strangers, and especially men. She has begun to trust us, but is jumpy and suspicious around others. Would a history of abuse cause her to eat straw or manure as a nervous behavior? (more...)

Open Question: Scary Dreams - What's the Reason?
A few days ago, I had a dream. At first, I was at a Chinese monastery, which may be explained by the fact that I watch a History Channel special on Chinese monks. I also dreamed something about fish, probably because all of my fish died recently. But anyway, back to the topic. I was at a Chinese monastery with my family, and we were about to be served what was supposed to be the best fish in the world. All of a sudden, we were in my aunt's house. I was okay, but there were zombies everywhere. I pushed one over, stepped on his neck with my heel, and snapped his head off. I then went to what was supposed to be my little cousin's room, but it was my friend's room. I reached over to a bat rack that usually wasn't there, probably because he doesn't really play baseball, and I started killing the zombies by hitting them in the head with the bat that I picked up. Then, I woke up. I didn't think that it was scary, but I was a little confused. This was because I woke up with my head, pillows and all, completely turned around. I was at the foot of the bed. I have no idea why, but it was as if I had gone to sleep that way. A night or two later, I had a different dream that is kind of unexplainable to me. Maybe it's because I watched Full Metal Alchemist and saw Gluttony, or because I listened to music from The Nightmare Before Christmas. I was minding my own buisness, but then I saw Rock Lee from Naruto, and I helped him get into a wetsuit. I don't know why. Then, I was suddenly outside on a hill at night. I walked into a small building, where there was a small meeting room and large bathrooms. I went into the bathrooms and heard Oogie Boogie's voice say "Where are those kids?" in an angry tone. I then found myself inside his body, as though possessing him, and I used a giant icing tube to kill someone. I put them in, squeezed it, and thier blood, organs, and skin came out of the end while thier bones were still in it. Then, I saw Gluttony with Oogie Boogie's voice, and he was talking to me. He was telling me that he wouldn't kill me if I told him where everyone else was. Then I woke up. Am I some kind of evil person? Or have I just been watching wierd shows lately? If you can help me interperet these dreams, would you please do so? Thank you, ~ iSpaz Vivien B and Talia M, thanks. But I don't usually think about anything before I fall asleep. I just kind of....fall asleep. And I'm not worried about anything, really. Any other suggestions? :/ I'm not worried about what they mean or anything. They're just the closest two nightmares that I've had in my whole life. I have a dreamcatcher that I think works. Since I got it, the only nightmares that I've had were those two. I've had it for quite a long time - at least three years. Does this mean that I'm just overdue for some fright in the night? (more...)

Open Question: Remember "Kramer" racist comment?
I recently received this via e-mail. It is apparently a response Michael Richards had regarding his so called racial rant at a comedy club. Now I have seen for many years now how society has shaped itself into a civil right movement / minority first. While i support the base of the creation of such movement and agree with their "original" work and focus. I find myself today wondering what has gone wrong for those movement to simply take everything out of context and implicitly reinforcing minorities rights OVER white people rights. It seems that "Kramer" puts it pretty well in his words when he asks why are just Whites called racist? you read ... and you tell me what you think. I am trying to understand how we all got to this point and why are the civil right movement lost so much of its credibility. If you want to be rude, crude or incapable of having a decent conversation know that you will be reported and deleted. Someone finally said it... How many are actually paying attention to this? There are African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, Arab Americans, etc. And then there are just Ameri-cans. You pass me on the street and sneer in my direction. You call me 'White Boy,' 'Cracker,' 'Honkey,' 'Whitey,' 'Caveman' ... And that's OK. But when I call you, Nigger, Towel head, Sand- nigger, Camel Jockey, Beaner, Gook, or Chink ... You call me a racist. You say that whites commit a lot of violence against you... So why are the ghettos the most dangerous places to live? You have the United Negro College Fund. You have Martin Luther King Day. You have Black History Month. You have Cesar Chavez Day. You have Ma'uled Al-Nabi. You have the NAACP. You have BET... If we had WET (White Entertainment Television), we'd be racists. If We had a White Pride Day, you would call us racists. If we had White History Month, we'd be Racists. If we had any organization for only whites to 'advance' OUR, lives we'd be Racists. We have a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a Black Chamber of Commerce, and then we just have the plain Chamber of Commerce. Wonder who pays for that?? A white woman could not be in the Miss Black American Pageant, but any color can be in the Miss America pageant. If we had a college fund that only gave white students scholarships ...You know we'd be racists. There are over 60 openly proclaimed Black Colleges in the US . Yet if there were 'White colleges' That would be a Racist college. In the Million Man March, you believed that you were marching for your race and rights. If we marched for our race and rights, you would call us racists. You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and You're not afraid to announce it. But when we announce our white pride, you call us racists. You rob us, carjack us, and shoot at us. But, when a white Police officer shoots a black gang member or beats up a black drug-dealer running from the law and posing a threat to society, you call him a racist. I am proud... But you call me a racist. Why is it that only whites can be racists?? There is nothing improper about this e-mail. Let's see which of you are proud enough to send it on. I sadly don't think many will. That's why we have lost most of OUR RIGHTS in this country. We won't stand up for ourselves! Mr Bad Touch? the reason is very simple ... it is because we in california ... Get some P.... while some others like you don't. Thank you for your contribution ... as lame as it was. (more...)

Open Question: Why have I been given Propranolol instead of Citalopram?
A locum GP prescribed me Citalopram 10mg 4 weeks ago for anxiety, which have helped tremondously. I saw my regular GP to get a repeat, and he has given me Propranolol 40 mg once a day, and is weaning me off the Citalopram over the next 4 weeks. I find this rather odd as the Citalopram are working well. Has anyone else had this happen to them? I am willing to give it a go, but have a history of depression and anxiety, and thought these would have been the better choice to carry on with. I used to take Prozac, but in the long term began to feel very emotionless, and stopped them myself in the summer. My GP said that the anxiety was a withdrawal of coming off the Fluoxetine, but this is 6 months later? (more...)
