(Civil War Map Reprint: 36 High quality reproduction of a historic map from the Civil War Map Collection from the Library of Congress. (most 1860s-1890s). Collection contains nearly 1,700 maps from the digital collections. Some are just from the era of the Civil War, while most are battlefield maps made during or soon after the end of the war. We currently list only those maps that are in the public domain. These maps vary significantly in image density, size, wear, visual appeal, and quality. We are in the process of digitally "cleaning up" these maps to try to restore them to the extent possible. This is a very time consuming process and some types of damage cannot be repaired. We are also producing these maps as orders or inquiries are made about them individually (also keep in mind that some people want to receive prints of the maps as is--i.e. without removal of wear, aging, library stamps, and damage). These are High Quality Prints offered by AntiqueReprints.

The Source
The Source This documentary is a treat, a look at the beat writers that benefits not only from a wealth of vital source information, including interviews with major figures, but also from an abundance of intelligence and wit. Interspersed with clips of Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady, and William S. Burroughs are brilliant montages of clips that set the beats in the context of their times. The story of how the beats rebelled against American conformity in the 1950s is well known, of course, but this documentary manages to find fresh ways to relate their views on life and writing. Segments in which Johnny Depp, John Turturro, and Dennis Hopper portray, respectively, Kerouac, Ginsberg, and Burroughs may strike some as extraneous, but the good performances redeem their inclusion in the film. As befits the documentary's title, The Source devotes considerable attention to the influence of the beats, and interviews with such notables as Ken Kesey, Jerry Garcia, and Philip Glass, performance clips of Bob Dylan, and news footage from the 1960s establish how the sensibility of the writers trickled into all of society. This is not only a fine introduction to the beats, but those who already revere them will find the profusion of material contained it to be a delight. --Robert J. McNamara

Open Question: Reasons to believe that God exists?
1. Matter is neither created nor destroyed, so the principle behind this must be eternal 2. Just as pain teaches us what not to expose our body to, our conscience is what teaches us to adhere towards honesty, morality, and the truth. Why would we care so much about the truth if it did not possess some inherent quality to it? Especially knowing how people will try to lie to get what they want knowing that the truth often doesn't always satisfy our desires but rather our needs. So if a lie gets what you want, why is it that the conscience is geared towards the truth? And why must the liar always pretend that the lie is true unless everyone knows that a lie is worthless. And knowing this, it becomes obvious that a lie only works because it contains a part of the truth. And if there does exist this truth, it must be objective as well as subjective. It is both objective and subjective. 3. Why would every group of people throughout history desire freedom, unless freedom could promise happiness. And why would every dictatorship desire power to control others and rob them of their freedom, unless they thought that this power would bring them happiness. So how is it that the average person and the tyrant, two completely opposite poles of being, both want what they think will bring them happiness? And if life contained no trace of happiness, everyone would welcome death and even suicide. And so if happiness exists and it is possible for multiple people to seek it and even obtain it, it must be objective and not just subjective. It must be both. 4. One correlation between all games is the idea of "wining" and to win is synonymous with good. But life is not a game, and there are no clear rules of what is good or not. Sometimes simply being lawful is good, but other times people rebel against laws they think are unlawful in order to strive to do what is good. If there were no rules to life there would be nothing good at all, not even artificial forms of goodness, and so the idea of a game would be impossible. Since this is not so, it must be that there are very subtle rules to life that go beyond all man made laws. People willingly follow these laws especially in times of strife, chaos, and catastrophe. Why else do people risk sacrificing themselves for others when danger is lurking if they do not believe that what they do is good? God is typically called Eternal, the Truth, the Good, and is a source of happiness for His followers. If each of those qualities exist, it is reason to believe that something exists which contains those qualities. And what do those qualities have in comparison to each other? How does Eternity relate to Happiness, Goodness, and Truth? That which is Eternal is beyond all temporal reality, it is unchanging in the midst of change, and thus is the Truth of all things, this Truth is Free of all physical laws and thus is the Law of all things, a Law that is ordered, and by following this Law a being can transcend all unlawful laws, and by following this Eternal Law it is Good for him or her, because it avoids everything false, unlawful, and temporal, and consequently this leads towards their Happiness. Thus God is all of these qualities, and all of these qualities are in fact one thing only, namely the Lord God. (more...)

Britain and France took too strong a stand against Hitler?s aggressions. (more...)

Open Question: What is Israel's aim in Gaza?
First of all, let us agree that victory in a conflict does not depend on the number of people you kill. It depends on a whole range of factors, from which is the meeting of military aims. From this standpoint at least, Israel has made a total blunder. It claims it's aims are to put a stop to all rockets being fired into Israel. In order for Israel to 'win' here, it must meet this aim of its, and doing so will be very difficult - the Israeli attacks and raids have only provoked more retaliation from Hamas. But for Hamas to win, all it has to do is fire a rocket into Israel (thus breaking the Israeli military aim). Which leads me to question what the real motives are. This is especially so given that there is evidence to say this 'Operation Cast Lead' had nothing to do with the cease-fire and the rockets of December following Israel's breach of the truce (see http://www.creative-i.info/?p=3402 to verify this) as it had been planned even prior to the 6-month cease-fire: "Sources in the defense establishment said Defense Minister Ehud Barak instructed the Israel Defense Forces to prepare for the operation over six months ago [June or before June] , even as Israel was beginning to negotiate a ceasefire agreement with Hamas."(Barak Ravid, Operation "Cast Lead": Israeli Air Force strike followed months of planning, Haaretz, December 27, 2008) "Barak told the assembled lawmakers that the defense establishment spent months preparing for the Gaza operation." ?Haaretz Israel News, Dec. 29, 2008 There is evidence that natural resources (in this case Gas) in Palestinian territory has been a part of the Israeli agenda: http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=11680 This all appears to be under the general disregard for Palestinians and the 'zionist-supremacy' that Israel is guilty of, something that runs throghout its history till today: "We must expel Arabs and take their places." David Ben Gurion, future Prime Minister of Israel, 1937 "We shall reduce the Arab population to a community of woodcutters and waiters" Uri Lubrani, PM Ben-Gurion's special adviser on Arab Affairs, 1960 "There was no such thing as Palestinians, they never existed" Golda Meir, Israeli Prime Minister June 15, 1969. "Everybody has to move, run and grab as many hilltops as they can to enlarge the settlements because everything we take now will stay ours... Everything we don't grab will go to them." Ariel Sharon, Israeli Foreign Minister, November 15, 1998. Whatever the case, we can certainly establish that Israel is playing a game of deception with the world. The question that remains is: are you buying into it? Eric M, please let the 'Little One' teach you something. The 4 children left clinging to their dead mother were not 'islamofascist terrorists'. The 40 dead taking shelter in the UN school were not 'islamofascist terrorists'. The piles of dead children and babies, and the maimed and lame are not 'islamofascist terrorists'. And nor is evry Palestinian male a 'terrorist' There are more people invovled in this thing than just your 'islamofascist terrorists'. In your own wise words: 'it ain't just a football game, little one'. And your expert analysis has got is spot on: the Palestinians are the one's 'causing' their own deaths, wounding and killing their brethren, women and children, flattening their own houses, and starving their own population, JUST so the world can feel sorry for them 'accidentally', and Israel has nothing to do with this at all. Please spend some time analysing yourself and why you stand by supporting the Israeli war criminals and show no support for the oppress For the full list of quotes above, please see: http://stoprapingpalestine.blogspot.com/2008/12/just-how-racist-are-zionists.html (more...)

Resolved Question: Christians, why don't we hear about the Israel's history by non-Christian sources...?
Surely, the lineage of the children of Israel would have continued, or did that particular line of generations lose it's historical significance after "the messiah"? You may argue that "Jesus came and did away with all of that", but did that mean everyone adhered to the belief that Jesus was a messiah? As a result, wouldn't 'cause and effect' mean that history would have continued from a generational standpoint for non-believers? Christianity largely focuses on generations doesn't it? If so, why didn't (1) the next "generation" of apostles take the reins and continue logging their travails or (2) others noted the lives of the children of Israel for all to read in the future? Did I miss something somewhere? Who has anything on the history of Israel from the death of Jesus to at least the middle ages? The full question is "Christians, why don't we hear about the Israel's history by non-Christian sources even after the death of the last apostle of the first "generation" of descendants of believers? To CREDIBILITY COLLECTOR: "Jewish scholars" is a good example of what I am referring to. To SINNER: it's a bit more complicated that that. I would not immedately assume that a person who could heal is a god. To do so would be backward-minded. I would assume that there are truths higher than the ones we know, or, suffice to say, "There are no truths; only varying degrees of mis-truth." (Rustum Battachariya, "Dark as Day" novel series by Charles Sheffield.) I would then be dang curious as to how he did it, as did the Jews back then who dwarfed him because of his technological prowess (I'm incorporating my theories into that statement. For example, a machine that has a lasik laser to fix astigmatism for making the blind man see. It didn't take much for a simple-minded person of that time to consider perfection and healing). I don't think that immediate assumption as you put it proves your mental worth as a person. Don't let the bedtime stories of Christianity lull you. It's hard especially if you grew up in that environment. To SCHMO: thanks for the link. Consider why couldn't the apostles then teach other apostles, who could carry the "generational" helm? I think it's too easy to say they began to doubt AS A WHOLE after seeing their messiah not fulfill prophecies. I doubt anyone is that like-minded. Concerning like-mindedness, the only way for a congregation to be like-minded to that extent is by peer pressure growing up in that environment; my opinion. In other words, it has to be etched into the brain- nothing natural about it at all, and is what Christianity has to do to keep "faith" within. The quesiton, then arises, "Why?" To AFANOFREASON: But if Jesus had to SAY he came "not to change but fulfill the law..." wouldn't that carry some manipulation to it? Would it be possible not to manipulate something if you had to tell others you were a messiah. Wouldn't signs outside of your control be the indicator? To LON: "savory sexual practices" LOL! Thank you for your informative answer! To LON: I never thought that would come up in this question! (more...)

Resolved Question: A bit of "prose" regarding the books of the Bible?
I attended a private Christian school and in our Bible class in the mid-80s the teacher used a source that included a line for each book of the Bible. While I can remember much of the Old Testament, i get lost around the Prophets, and can't remember much of the New Testament at all. Is any one familiar with this work? A sample; In Genesis the world was made In Exodus the march was told Leviticus contains the Law In Numbers are the tribes enrolled In Deuteronomy again we're urged to keep God's law alone And these five books of Moses are the oldest writings that are known Brave Joshua to Canaan leads In Judges oft the Jews rebel We read of David's name in Ruth and First and Second Samuel In First and Second Kings we read how bad the Hebrew state became In First and Second Chronicles another history of the same In Ezra captive Jews return While Nehemiah builds the wall Queen Esther saves her race from death These books historical we call Anyway, there's a line along this manner all the way through. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank You! Kitten Mitten - Wow! this isn't quite the same, but so close. This indicates a music copyright of 1988, I graduated from high school in 1986. The class would have been in 83 or 84. I assume this is based on the same work, but there are subtle differences. (more...)
