In Griot Time
In Griot Time Djelimady Tounkara is only one of the memorable people you will meet in this dramatic narrative of life among the griot musicians of Mali. Born into families where music and the tradition of griot story-telling is a heritage and a privilege, Djelimady and his fellow griots -- both men and women -- live their lives at the intersection of ancient traditions and the modern entertainment industry. During the seven months he spent living and studying with Djelimady, Banning Eyre immersed himself in a world that will fascinate you as it did him. Eyre creates a range of unforgettable portraits. Some of the people who stride through his pages are internationally known, musicians like Salif Keita, Oumou Sangare, and Grammy winner Ali Farka Toure. But the lesser-known characters are equally fascinating: Adama Kouyate, Djelimady's dynamic wife; Moussa Kouyate, the Tounkara family's own griot; Yayi Kanoute, the flamboyant jelimuso (female griot) who failed to take America by storm; Foutanga Babani Sissoko, the mysterious millionaire who rebuilt an entire town and whose patronage is much sought after by the griots of Bamako. But the picture Eyre draws is not just a series of portraits. Out of their interactions comes a perceptive panorama of life in Mali in the late twentieth century. The narrative gives us a street-level view of the transformation of musical taste and social customs, the impact of technology and the pressures of poverty, at a crucial time in Mali's history. In individual after individual, family after family, we see the subtle conflicts of heritage and change. Even the complications of democracy -- with democracy, mango vendors think they can charge anything they want,Djelimady points out -- are woven into an unforgettable saga of one man, his family, his profession, and the world of Malian music.

Open Question: So,finally,Arabs recognize that "the palestinian people" does not exist?
On March 31, 1977, the Dutch newspaper Trouw published an interview with Palestine Liberation Organization executive committee member Zahir Muhsein. Here's what he said: "The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct "Palestinian people" to oppose Zionism. For tactical reasons, Jordan, which is a sovereign state with defined borders, cannot raise claims to Haifa and Jaffa, while as a Palestinian, I can undoubtedly demand Haifa, Jaffa, Beer-Sheva and Jerusalem. However, the moment we reclaim our right to all of Palestine, we will not wait even a minute to unite Palestine and Jordan". The distinguished Arab-American historian, Princeton University Prof. Philip Hitti, testifying against partition before the Anglo-American Committee in 1946, said: "There is no such thing as 'Palestine' in history, absolutely not." In 1937, a local Arab leader, Auni Bey Abdul-Hadi, told the Peel Commission, which ultimately suggested the partition of Palestine: "There is no such country [as Palestine]! 'Palestine' is a term the Zionists invented! There is no Palestine in the Bible. Our country was for centuries part of Syria." The representative of the Arab Higher Committee to the United Nations submitted a statement to the General Assembly in May 1947 that said "Palestine was part of the Province of Syria" and that, "politically, the Arabs of Palestine were not independent in the sense of forming a separate political entity." A few years later, Ahmed Shuqeiri, later the chairman of the PLO, told the Security Council: "It is common knowledge that Palestine is nothing but southern Syria." If all the Arab world says there has never been such a country as Palestine and that the Palestinian people does not exist-maybe it would be wise to believe them? There is a question,though...If the palestinian people does not exist-who are all these Arabs who hang about Israel and Judea, and what the hell are they doing there? (more...)

Open Question: Do I have a good chance of transferring into Stony Brook University?
Hey whats up guys? I am currently a student at Iona College, and I am looking to transfer over to a school where I can dorm, enjoy the college life, not spend as much money, and also find somewhat of a challenge with academics. The problem with Iona is that the academics are too laid back, and I live only 15 minutes away from Iona College. Due to this, I have no reason to convince my parents to dorm at Iona College. My grades are as follows: - Introduction to Business Law: B - Business Law- Law Agency, Business Org., etc.: B+ - Introduction to Accounting: B - Communication Skills- Writing 1: B - Foundations and Traditions in Literature: B+ - Introduction to Oral Communications: B+ - Introduction to Philosophy: A - Moral Philosophy: A - History- Evolution of Western Civilization: A - History- Tradition and Modernity: B+ - Mathematical Thinking- Statistics: B - Brief Calculus: C - Computer Science: B - Film Genres: B I am currently a sophomore with a 3.3 GPA and also have dropped a religion class. I don't know if Stony Brook University takes an interest in high school background, but I attended Salesian High School in New Rochelle as well. I scored overall with a 89 Aveage, and my extracirricular activities consisted of being ahead of the Literary Magazine Club, tutoring students, joining the cooking club, chess club and also being selected to join the National Honor Society. The only concern of mine is an 820/1600 SAT Score. Other than my academic history in question, I was wondering about the student life at Stony Brook University. Is it fun? Is it easy to make friends there? Are there a lot of activities you can take up? Please get back to me about this. Thank You. (more...)
