Open Question: Can anyone give me feedback on this personal statement? It's still a draft but i'd be really grateful?
Anyone can write, but the ability to write and influence others is a powerful tool. For this reason Journalism is a subject I have long been intrigued in, it's a great way of presenting facts and expressing opinions. It's power is such that it can persuade it's audience towards the writers way of thinking.I first became interested in writing during school English Lessons, our teacher would allow us to write short stories using our imagination. I found improvised writing liberated my mind and helped me escape the stress of dreaded Maths Lessons. My hobbies include Football, Music, Playing Guitar, Socialising, Reading Books and Newspapers. I usually read 3 Newspapers a day and especially enjoy reading the columnist pages, mainly for their controversy. A few of my favourite columnists include Tony Parsons, Paul Routledge and Sue Carrol. I admire them for boldly expressing their views and having to face the angry torrent of e-mails. However like most men my favourite page is the sports one. I love to play, watch and read abut Football, next to work it takes up half of my life. I play for a Sunday League team and take turns to write the match reports on the club website. Others in the team see this as a chore, but I love doing it. I'm currently working in a Law firm where i started as Office Junior. I gradually progressed into the Accounts Department and now hold an important roll in the Management Accounts team. I have completed NVQ 3 in Business Administration and the Intermediate level of my Accounting course. Whilst I enjoy my job I'm pushing for a spontaneous and exciting career that I have a passion for. I have a broad general knowledge stemming from my interest in Newspapers and Media, and strong analytical skills from my role in Accounting and my time serving on the Jury. I've also been offered a weeks work experience with a Newspaper firm in February, where I hope to pick up a valuable insight into Journalism. I want to go to University to better myself and gain a qualification I can be proud of. I crave a career in Journalism and want to gain the best possible knowledge on route. I have the enthusiasm and drive to succeed and influence those around me. If selected for the course I look forward to an exciting new experience and hope to meet some fantastic people along the way. Open Question: Your thoughts on this letter, which appeared in a local newspaper in my area; it's about Gaza etc?
I thought it made some valid points - do you agree? 'To the best of my knowledge, the Taliban in Afghanistan has never attacked the UK, is not openly committed to killing as many British civilians as possible, and does not hold any British hostages. 'Yet the British fight the Afghan terrorists, killing as many as possible, and *civilian* casualties since 2001 are estimated to be in the ****tens of thousands****. How would the British government have responded to the Taliban if they had fired 10,000 deadly missiles at British cities, the way Hamas has been attacking Israeli cities for eight years? 'How would the British government have responded to the Taliban if they had sent over hundreds of suicide bombers, and in this way killed thousands of British civilians, as Hamas has been doing to Israel for the past eight years?' Good letter? I thought the bloke who wrote it put it rather well! STEFAN - so because YOU didn't hear about them, you just assume it never happened? Wow. What an illogical response. I can assure you they happened - if you'd like me to email you a list of the ISRAELI VICTIMS just say the word. Oh and FYI - who says parts of some Israeli areas are NOT 'in ruins'??? You been there? No. Thought not. RICHARD - the actual analogy would be if the IRISH GOVERNMENT of that time had been attacking us. And had they been YES, we would have, actually. The IRA didn't run anything. Hamas CONTROLS GAZA. It is the ELECTED GOVERNMENT. G2 - you are wrong. Would you like me to email you a list of the attacks, with dates and names of victims...? MKK EUROPE - please get your facts straight. Nobody was 'ethnically cleansed'. Go and read the autobiography of the then ruler of JORDAN. STEFAN *********** lol lol - typical. You can't really answer so fall back on that weary old lie. Answer this: if what you say is true, WHY is America constantly pressuring Israel to do things she really doesn't want to??? It's really hilarious that you could only answer with yet more ignorance. DAVID S - er, hello? The Palestinians ELECTED Hamas! GINGERR - what part is 'stolen land'??? Hamas are firing missiles into Israeli land that is UNDISPUTED. Israel was created the same way AS JORDAN. Legally, ratified by the UN. (more...)

Open Question: Car seat's ejecting while belted in?
We just had a child in our community die in a car accident. The newspaper said that she was killed while the belt holding her car seat in broke. Is this common. I know the LATCH system is better but if you can't afford a newer vehicle you are stuck with the old fashioned way. I had my car seats checked by the State Police and they are installed correctly with locking clips, now there is this worry. The child was in a late 90's model vehicle, how do you tell if seatbelts are "dry rotted"? Yes, I do know that carseats have an expiration date. I have my seat installation checked by the State Police. I am very up to date on my knowledge about carseats, the question was about "seat belts" in the vehicle breaking during a accident instead of holding the seat in. (more...)

Open Question: Up there. A Story Made By Me. What do you think of it?
Not done yet. Please read it. Enjoy! Up There. In a world full of pain and sorrow, there once was a boy; an orphan he was. His parents were mysterious to him. That young boy lived with an old man, a man who had picked him up of pity. That young boy- poor and freezing lived with only one boot, ripped and scratched, and a coat, ragged and dirty. The young boy grumbled ?if only life was better? then he sat up from his laying stance, and cracked his way up to a stand. He felt his legs begin to tremble. He bent down to pick the bucket filled with water that he was suppose to send to his master, and he began to walk slowly, loosely he grabbed the bucket, but held it strong enough to support its weight. He could hear old newspaper crunch and garbage crash as it was kicked aside as he pushed his way through to garbage. He was in an alley heading toward to a destroyed old house. Bricks had tumbled from that house, mold grew, and spiders crawled like all spiders do at night. He walked past the road, with no fear of death, not a single droplet of sweat dripped down from his head. He reached the other side and found an old man wearing an old ragged coat staring at him. The boy glanced at the old man shyly and looked down toward the ground; he began to walk into the destroyed old house in front of him, while the old man followed behind him. They both sat at a table. The old man began to speak ?go fetch the wood from the oven, boy?. The boy got up and began to walk tiredly toward the oven, which was nothing but a pot over a fire. The boy finally came to a halt by the fire and he bent to pick up logs beside the stove, and began to bring it back toward the old man. He began to walk as his arms began to hurt, but he trudged along the wooden floor. He sat the logs on top of the old crooked table and watched the old man bring out his knife, and begin to carve into the wood. The old man stopped, and looked at the young boy, only to continue cutting his wood. The boy sat there, watching to old man cut right through the ridges roughly. He knew he was hungry, he knew since his stomach had been sending out a signal, a signal of hunger. ?Grrrumble? it went, every time it did that it sent out a wave of pain toward his head. He thought it was the slightest grumble, the grumble softer that whispers-yet stronger than death. The boy looked at the old man, looking for any hint of food. He found none. The old man suddenly began to speak while slicing though his wood ?there is some bread over in kitchen, you may have some?. The boy humbly spoke ?Thank You sir?. His thoughts filled with happiness, he had the tiniest smile, but still had a very happy feeling. He sprung out of his seat as fast as he could which was very slow, and remembered his last meal as he eagerly walked toward the kitchen. His last meal had been long ago, two days to be exact. The kitchen had always been rather small, but just big enough to be able to eat in. He saw the bread with delight; he grabbed it aggressively and ripped out a bite. He tried to chew as fast as he could since he knew it was the best taste he had felt in days. One bite is all he needed, suddenly his body renewed with energy but, it only lasted for so little. He had to take another, and he just continued chewing the bread, until he stared at his hands with nothing but tiny crumbs lay rested. His mind faded from a golden glow, to a dull grey. His smile reduced to a frown, and he felt depression. His energy increased when he walked though. He felt more of a hope to his walk, which made his feelings glow. He sat down next to the old man and was surprised by what he saw. Before him, that boy saw an amazing craftsmanship. Of a strange creature, with four legs- it looked like a dog but was bigger and flowing hair that ran down its neck. On top of what seems to be this creatures back was a man who had a strange looking hat and deep eyes. Even though it was a carving, with not color, he saw light. He turned to look at something else, and he began to think about the life before him, and the life after. He knew how poor his life was, but were there other people out there that are living with wealth? Do they live with pleasure and joy with everything around them? He began to think about wealth, and happiness, and all the joys in life. He couldn?t think of any that were reasonable. Life continued with this boy very much like the way he had it, but not much like it either. He began to wonder, his curiosity built up and finally, after a few months of waiting he could not hold it. He knew his master would be very easily irritated if he was to ask, but he could not hold the temptations. One day he was sitting at that same table the same one he sat in amazement. He began ?Master.? He cautiously spoke. He waited for a reply signifying his approval. ?Yes?? the old man finally spoke. ?Is, is there a better world ou At the end, the boy dies (sad :( ) but he makes a big diffrence. he makes their world like our world, and he his what some at his world might call gods helper. im planning on making a good ending next to a dramatic sadness to make the reader cry with joy :'D it got cutt off so heres the rest. ehhe... out there? You know. A life more pleasant?? he shyly spoke. The master was silent. After along silence with only the noise of the oven cooking stew, the master inched closer toward the boy and looked at the boy with death in his eye. ?You will not speak of this, or I will indeed hang you on that wall-? The master pointed at a wall old rusty chains hanging from it. ?I will make sure you will suffer a great deal before you die, do you understand?? The boy nodded hastily, and resumed to his food. He knew his master was always evil to him, but he knew he wasn?t that cruel. He thought about asking his master about the reason he was that cruel, but he had token too much pressure for now. He waited until nightfall, He had to ask. Sweat beaded down from his red faced head as he laid on the ground preparing to sleep. He eyed the door until he heard foot steps-faint slow foot steps. He knew it was his master, and he knew he had to ask. (more...)

Open Question: Does this reflective essay sound okay?
Ryan Hawk Mr. Edward English 3 4 January 2009 Reflection on Recycling Activity Recycle. What a vigorous word that never quite pronounced itself in my daily activities, at least not until a month ago. As I sipped the remaining drop of diet coke and mechanically threw the empty container into our overcrowded garbage disposal, the word recycle bombarded my mind. Quite a while back, my family had planned, what seemed like an organized and easy arrangement, to recycle and earn a little cash for recreational activities, but it seems that they, including myself, have become very lazy and unmotivated to go through with the task. Well, I realized that I needed to do something about that. I began to remember various commercials, which have become increasingly popular, about becoming active in the ?green? community by recycling and saving energy. So, I consciously plowed through our pantry and retrieved a separate garbage bag, proudly hung it on the knob outside our pantry and threw the vacant can into it. With no further delay, I motivated my family into a recycling plan, which involved recycling empty soda cans and paying monthly visits to my father?s company called Bighorn Bolt & Anchor. My father unselfishly let me recycle some usable pieces of steel he had been using for boat projects. Within a month or so, I had obtained over three hundred and sixty four cans of diet coke, amazingly, and about fifty pounds of steel. With my truck loaded and ready to go, I drove down to the Empire Recycling Center near West Park Plaza, and deposited my treasures. I proudly went home with fifty seven dollars in hand. Now having finally recycled, I hope to put my newfound habit to use. Through this experience, I realized that recycling is a way of life. Once we have made that choice to implement all the steps of recycling in our daily lives, and stick to that choice every single day, recycling becomes second nature to us. Sure there will be lapses; because we creatures have habits. But no matter, we push on. Every small contribution to the recycling movement and the initiative to protect our environment adds up to how our present society eventually shapes our nation?s and the Earth?s future. As I press the issue further, I have begun to recycle even more products throughout my household, such as light bulbs and newspaper, even though they do not hold a high value in the recycling market. Along with recycling new products, my family and I have also planned to establish a neighborhood recycling program, which involves distributing a separate recycling bin to neighbors, which will be collected each month. Within the course of this experience, a new sense of accomplishment has publicized its way into my life, and even though the activity may be petite and vigorous, there are no regrets. Now that the habit of recycling has pronounced itself into my life, I feel that it will become an unregretful habit throughout the span of my life, and hopefully influence others to follow in the habit of reducing, reusing, and recycling. Please comment or give me corrections. (more...)

Open Question: World Challenge Expedition To Mexico 2010 - Fund Raising Ideas?
I need to raise £3500 by Summer 2010 so I can go on an expedition to Mexico, Belize & Guatemala. This is apparently a once in a lifetime opportunity & I'd appreciate hearing of other peoples' experiences of these kind of trips. Also, I need ideas for how I can raise enough money. I am already looking for jobs, babysitting and planning to hold these events: + school disco for year 7 & 8 + sponsored silence + bag packing at supermarkets + writing to newspapers and companies for sponsorship + busking possibly? + non uniform day at school etc... Any more ideas? Thanks. (more...)

Resolved Question: funny religious jokes...not offensive!?
The head priest at a certain church was out for the day, so he asked the deacon to do confession for him. The deacon agrees, and the first person that comes says, "Forgive me, for I just gave a guy a blow job." He says, "You have sinned." Then he looks at the sheet on the wall that had punishments for certain sins on it, but blow job was not on there, so he went out to ask one of the altar boys what he usually gives for a blow job. The altar boy answered, "Oh, about five dollars." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A married man goes to confessional and says to the priest, "Father, I had an affair with a woman... almost." "What do you mean almost?" question the priest. "Well, we got undressed and rubbed together, but then I stopped." "Rubbing together is the same as putting it in," explains the priest. "You're not to go near that woman again. Now, say five Hail Mary's and put $50 in the poor box." The man leaves confessional, says his prayers, and then walks over to the poor box. He pauses for a moment and then decides to leave. The priest quickly runs over to the man and exclaims, "I saw that... you didn't put any money in the poor box!" "Well Father, I rubbed up against it and, like you said, it's the same as putting it in!" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A drunk man who smelled like beer sat down on a subway seat next to a priest. The man's tie was stained, his face was plastered with red lipstick, and a half empty bottle of gin was sticking out of his torn coat pocket. He opened his newspaper and began reading. After a few minutes the man turned to the priest and asked," Say, Father, what causes arthritis?" "My Son, it's caused by loose living, being with cheap, wicked women, too much alcohol, a contempt for your fellow man, sleeping around with prostitutes and lack of bath." "Well, I'll be damned," the drunk muttered, returning to his paper. The priest, thinking about what he had said, nudged the man and apologized. "I'm very sorry. I didn't mean to come on so strong. How long have you had arthritis?" "I don't have it, Father. I was just reading here that the Pope does." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Is God Real? An atheist professor was teaching a college class at Alabama and he told the class that he was going to prove that there is no God. He said, "God, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you 15 minutes!" Ten minutes went by. He kept taunting God, saying, "Here I am, God. I'm still waiting." He got down to the last couple of minutes and a big 240 pound football player in the class walked up to the professor, hit him full force in the face, and sent him flying from his platform. The professor struggled up, obviously shaken and yelled, "What's the matter with you? Why did you do that?" The football player replied, "GOD WAS BUSY; HE SENT ME!" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There was a Minister whose wife was expecting a baby. The Minister went to the congregation and asked for a raise. After much consideration and discussion, they passed a rule that when the Minister's family expanded, so would his pay check. After five or six children, this started to get expensive. The congregation decided to hold a meeting again to discuss the Minister's pay situation. You can imagine there was much yelling and bickering. Finally, the Minister got up and spoke to the crowd, "Having children is an act of God!" In the back of the room, a little old man with a full beard stood up, and in his frail voice said... "Snow and Rain are also 'acts of God', but when we get too much, we wear rubbers!" i'm glad i cheered you up tanya... =] (more...)

Voting Question: Do things look good for this relationship?
Before I get started, I realize the stigma attached with online dating, but I am looking for honest opinions here. The reason I chose online dating is because I live in a small town and it is difficult to meet new people. Please don't hold that against me. Now, I've started communicating with this girl who had a free trial on eHarmony. She had an account previously, and she sent me a message on Myspace asking if I was the same person that was eHarmony. She said I was the only person who she found she was interested in. Well, we've been communicating through e-mail, about six or seven day, for the last few days. She asked me for a picture, and I sent a few, joking with her how it would probably scare her off. She said it didn't and put a smiley face in her reply. We've talked about everything, from family, to jobs, to education, sports, etc. A real feeling out process. She said she was attracted to me because of my looks, education, goals and even thought my job as a newspaper editor and writer was "sexy." She's a teacher, so she said she might not be able to write back as often since school has started and she doesn't have the internet at her place. But she said she would definately respond. The last messge I sent, I gave her my phone number and said I really would like to get to know you more and maybe we could grab some coffee or lunch. How do you think things look for this relationship? Do things look good? (more...)
