Bryn Terfel - Something Wonderful (Bryn Terfel sings Rodgers & Hammerstein)
Bryn Terfel - Something Wonderful (Bryn Terfel sings Rodgers & Hammerstein) In the opening song of "Something Wonderful," Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel sings, "All the sounds of the Earth are like music." They most definitely are when Terfel surrounds them with his resonant baritone. Every phrase of Rodgers and Hammerstein's music is imbued with uncommon sensitivity, impeccable phrasing, and dazzling beauty. Terfel's rich and meaty voice shares a plate with delicate pianissimos, unabashed sentimentality, and swaggering forthrightness. He successfully tackles songs originally written for women. In "It Might as Well Be Spring," he transforms dippy into dapper. And he turns "Bali Hai" into a foreboding, demanding, and seductive call; the listener must helplessly succumb to the world of his sensitive manliness. His interpretations of the old standards--"If I Loved You," "Soliloquy," "This Nearly Was Mine," "Some Enchanted Evening"--are stellar. Despite the temporary lulls caused by the second-class songs from "Allegro," Terfel does a first-class job of bringing them to life. Undoubtedly one of the best crossover records of all time. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

High Society
High Society MGM's bold idea to remake George Cukor's Oscar-winning upperclass romantic farce, The Philadelphia Story, into a star-studded, Technicolor musical with Cole Porter tunes somehow works splendidly and remains an underrated gem. Even the plot and character names--and some bits of dialogue--all remain the same as the original. Crooning Bing Crosby replaces Cary Grant as the wealthy ex-husband trying to win back his soon-to-be-remarried ex-wife, spoiled ice queen Tracy Lord (Grace Kelly, stunning and aloof in her last film role, originated in the earlier comedy by Katherine Hepburn). Unlike Grant, however, Crosby has jazz great Louis Armstrong, playing himself, in his corner for quixotic persuasion. Frank Sinatra (cocky in James Stewart's former role) and Celeste Holm add support as the nosy reporters covering, and subsequently complicating, the upcoming wedding. Sure, High Society lacks the original's witty satire, sarcasm, and character complexity; but it's assuredly paced and wonderfully acted, and contains enough romantic chemistry to keep the plot engaging. And then there's the music. Unlike the grandiose production numbers of many '40s and '50s musicals, High Society's musical sequences are considerably low-key and intimate, focusing on Porter's lyrical content, and the style in which it's delivered by the charismatic performers. Armstrong kicks the film off in telling style: he sings the title track, a calypso tune outlining the plot like a Greek chorus, not as an elaborately choreographed song-and-dance number, but instead stuffed claustrophobically in the back of a limousine with his jazz band. Other musical standouts include Sinatra and Crosby playfully tossing barbs during "Well, Did You Evah?"; Crosby and Armstrong teaming up for an energetic clash of styles in "Now You Has Jazz"; the two soaring, archetypal ballads by the leads--Crosby's "I Love You, Samantha" and Sinatra's superior "You're Sensational"; and, finally, the satirical Sinatra/Holm duet, "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?," the closest High Society ever comes to social or class commentary. --Dave McCoy

Good Neighbor Sam
Good Neighbor Sam Can this outrageous rent-a-husband scheme work? .... Superior quality video tape recorded in the LP Mode... Jack Lemmon is in peak form as a harried ad man in this scintillating comedy. As the only clean-living person at his agency, Sam Bissel (Lemmon) is put in charge of its most important account, Nurdlinger's Dairy, headed by straight-laced Simon Nurdlinger (Edward G. Robinson). Sam and his wife Min (Dorothy Provine) celebrate the promotion with longtime friend Janet Lagerlof (Romy Schneider), who has good news of her own. She stands to inherit $15 million -- but only if she is happily married. Since Janet has just seperated from her husband, she offers her good neighbor Sam $1 million if he will play the part. As complications multiply, Sam and Janet are forced to continue the charade, both to win her inheritance and to advance his career.

Open Question: How do I get started on selling my home? ?
I'm planning to call a realtor, but I'm not sure what to say. Do I ask him to come out to the house to see it, or should I speak to a few different people on the phone first before I decide who to use? We would like to list the house in the spring. Is it too early to talk to a realtor? (more...)

Open Question: Out of Debt with Dave Ramsey?
About a year and a half ago, my better half came home and was telling me about this guy she heard on the radio. He was carrying on about paying off your credit cards, driving an "old beater", and getting out of debt. She told me his name was Dave Ramsey. Well, long story short, we've been listening to him ever since. His approach to a debt free lifestyle was so simple, I couldn't believe we hadn't been doing it that way all along. We began applying Dave's "Debt Snowball" shortly after and started working the "Baby Steps". And so far, with the exception of one loan on a service vehicle (sorry, bought before Dave), and balance of a mortgage on a second house, we've wiped out all of our debt. Our plan is to sell the second house this Spring, use the proceeds from that to pay off both the mortgage and the loan on the truck, and the move on up the "Baby Steps". Right now, we're still on Step 2, but I can hardly wait until we can call in to the show and scream "we're debt free" on the radio. What a rush. I know there are other Ramsey fans here, I've seen their answers. So, here's my questions. Which "Baby Step" are you working on right now and what's been the hardest thing so far? (more...)

Open Question: First impressions outfit, spring break?
I'll be going back to my home town very soon. I moved across the country to be exact. And when I'm coming back back there's going to be people i haven't seen in a year, and there's going to be people i haven't seen in over 5 years. All at the parties i will be attending. Like the big blow out ones. Family, friends and ex's. (: I have two weeks back. Can someone give me advice on what to wear, or even send links on where i could purchase that. I've change so much and i want to make a good impression when i get to finally see everyone. And i get to see my two closest friends i've known since i was 4. Any good ideas. I wanna be stylish every since day, and I'm shopping this weekend so now would be a good time to get in ideas. From hair, to access, shoes, earing recommendations. Ect. (: (more...)

Open Question: my daughter is sick... do you feel she was rushed through our doctor office?
here are the symptoms. EXTREAMLY lathargic as in laying around barely holding her head up and sleeping all day. and when not sleeping crying. Cauphing all the time and green goobys out of the eyes. this morning when we changed her diaper she was dry. Fever of 100+ we went in and she kinda sorda looked her over and then she gave her an anti-biotic because "her ears lokk a little red" and may be an ear infection. I left frustrated and felt rushed out. since she has been home (the appointment was at 11:00) she has slept all day. this is my third child so i am no spring chicken. I have done this before and I can't help but to think she is REALY sick (more...)

Open Question: 32 and never dated, is it to late?
Hi everyone. I've been really really depressed lately. I'm 32 now and I have this problem called never having a girlfriend and still being a virgin and loosing every friend I ever thought I had as a result of it. I feel so jelous and pissed off every time I go out and see young couples smooching and holding hands! Or yet some high school punk in his beat up honda with a coffee can muffler cruising around with some hot girl! I just want to yank his *** up and beat the **** out of him and say what makes you better then me! I know that's the wrong additude to have but 20 years of being told that your not good looking enough to be boyfriend material has broken my give a damm!!!! From middle school thru high school to co workers, to friends, friends of friends, to blind dates to online dating so on and so forth for over the past 15 years I always got the same rejection over my looks. I've always thrived to be a good person and treat others as I would like to be treated. I've always offered my complete and total friendship to anyone that needs or wants it, and it has all back fired on me. I can't get thru a day without wondering how my life would be today if I had meet someone 10 or 15 years ago. And I can't lay to rest thoughts of the good times and sweet memories I should have of my youth with someone special that isn't there but only the memories of how I was always told I wasn't cute, good looking, or attractive enough! But every pretty boy Tom Dick and Harry treated them like **** and they loved them just because they was pretty boys!!!! It's hard for me to even look at the guy in the mirror every morning knowing that I've never even been accepted to go on one single date, never been kissed, never had a warm hug and hearing words like I love you. NOTHING! The differance from me and people that wants to kill themselves is that most people have to try to think of ligit reasons to do it. I have to try and think of one reason not to. People I used to consider friends have nothing to do with me anymore because of this and how I don't get ***** everyday like they do. I've been called every name in the book and a new book started. Gay, queer, even pedofile because I've always had a warm spot for kids and used to dream of the day I became a father and the fact that I've never had a women in my life people judged me totaly wrong. Two summers ago I was living in Nashville Tn where I was training to be a railroad engineer. At the same time I was working on one of my car restorations of a 1987 Trans Am. I had just got the paint and graphic work done and was going to drive it back to my home town of Kingsport to let everyone see it. I called up Brian and Mike that was old high school friends and told them I was comming in. They made plans to meet me at circuit city. They made big jokes of my black and gold TA with the big eagle on the hood and ask who are you suposed to be Burt Reynolds? I just laughed about that but I didn't know they had set me up to get me in the store and away from my car so they could have there way with it. They knew how much time, work, and money I had in this thing and what it ment to me and the paint job wasn't a week old. They took red spray paint and painted the words *** boy, queer, and painted a big dick over the bird on the hood. They recorded the whole time on cam making slurs about me and what a looser I am being a virgin and never had a GF! When I came out and seen my car I feel to my knees and threw up right there in the parking lot, I was so weak at the knees I could not stand! I've since lost all faith in people and the future. I feel I'm already dead it's just my body still walks around empty with no sole. Just to answer some questions, I'm not fat I still weigh 147 as I did when I graduated high school. I've always been active and come from a slinder family. I'm 5 foot 10 blue eyes and light brownish hair kinda like Tom Cruise's style. As for ways I've tryed to be the cool cat thru the years, I studied music, voice and guitar thru my early teens and was lead guitarist in a rock band in high school. Took 4 years auto machanics and got into restoring classic muscle cars all thru my 20s as I still some what do. I built a 1972 plymouth duster that I used to drag race and won placks and trophies with before it was stolen in spring 2004 and found striped out 3 months latter in Virgina. Total loss there. I've since went back to college and am now an engineer for CSX railroad. Would you say my window of opportunity has long since shut at this point of my life???? And could someone please tell me where I went wrong and what I have done to deserve this???? Just if you wanna see some pics. http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=170902874&albumId=407995 There is more pics in my photobucket just look for T_TopBandit, you can also IM me on yahoo messanger at T_TopBandit. Open Question: Out of State Tuition - Will FAFSA help cover the costs?
I'm currently attending a small university in my home state of MN. I'm a junior, but should have about 1.5 years left after this spring semester. I know the financially wiser choice is to finish up here, but i seriously want to transfer down to UH in TX. Their out of state tuition is over $12,000 per semester for 15 credits. Will FAFSA be able to help me cover the costs of tuition? I'm currently getting enough to pay my school's tuition which is about $4000 a semester, if I include the grants and loans. Will the need of financial aid and the higher cost of tuition raise the amount of grants and loans I can take? (more...)
