The Adventures of Indiana Jones (3 Tapes)

As with
Star Wars, the George Lucas-produced
Indiana Jones trilogy was not just a plaything for kids but an act of nostalgic affection toward a lost phenomenon: the cliffhanging movie serials of the past. Episodic in structure and with fate hanging in the balance about every 10 minutes, the
Jones features tapped into Lucas's extremely profitable
Star Wars formula of modernizing the look and feel of an old, but popular, story model. Steven Spielberg directed all three films, which are set in the late 1930s and early '40s: the comic book-like
Raiders of the Lost Ark, the spooky,
Gunga Din-inspired
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and the cautious but entertaining
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Fans and critics disagree over the order of preference, some even finding the middle movie nearly repugnant in its violence. (Pro-
Temple of Doom people, on the other hand, believe that film to be the most disarmingly creative and emotionally effective of the trio.) One thing's for sure: Harrison Ford's swaggering, two-fisted, self-effacing performance worked like a charm, and the art of cracking bullwhips was probably never quite the iconic activity it soon became after
Raiders. Supporting players and costars were very much a part of the series, too--Karen Allen, Sean Connery (as Indy's dad), Kate Capshaw, Ke Huy Quan, Amrish Puri, Denholm Elliot, River Phoenix, and John Rhys-Davies among them. Years have passed since the last film (another is supposedly in the works), but emerging film buffs can have the same fun their predecessors did picking out numerous references to Hollywood classics and B-movies of the past.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

The third episode in Steven Spielberg's rousing Indiana Jones saga, this film recaptures the best elements of
Raiders of the Lost Ark while exploring new territory with wonderfully satisfying results. Indy is back battling the Nazis, who have launched an expedition to uncover the whereabouts of the Holy Grail. And it's not just Indy this time--his father (played with great acerbic wit by Sean Connery, the perfect choice) is also involved in the hunt. Spielberg excels at the kind of extended action sequences that top themselves with virtually every frame; the best one here involves Indy trying to stop a Nazi tank from the outside while his father is being held within. For good measure, Spielberg reveals (among other things) how Indy got his hat, the scar on his chin, and his nickname (in a prologue that features River Phoenix as the young Indiana).

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas's 1981 resurrection of the Saturday-matinee adventure genre was deservedly popular, and kicked off a successful trilogy. Set in 1936, this first feature introduces Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, an archaeologist and adventurer whose quests for rare antiquities frequently find him running from one menace or another.
Raiders finds Dr. Jones in the middle of a Nazi plot to use the mysterious powers of the Ark of the Covenant to win the war. Karen Allen plays the love interest with an old-fashioned "man's woman" appeal (she can drink anybody under the table and is free with her fists). The constant, cliffhanger appeal of the movie is great fun--one is always wondering how Indy will get out of one scrape after another--and Ford's career got a big boost with his self-effacing but masculine portrayal of the hero.

Open Question: Will there be an Indiana Jones 5?
Open Question: Does anyone else besides me "get" the recurring jokes about Karen Allen on The Simpsons?
I think they poke fun at the way the actors in Indiana Jones are always, repeatedly calling her character "Marion" beautiful, when, well, Karen Allen... isn't exactly all that great. You know how Mr. Burns or someone else sometimes chimes in with "Well, she's no Karen Allen, but...."

Open Question: Has DRM become too ridiculous?
Here are some problems with DRM that I faced in 2008:
1) Could not uninstall a copy of Oblivion I borrow from a friend to test if it worked on my computer because it didn't work on his. Apparently you need the CD to uninstall the game. Ridiculous! I know this was purposefully written in to piss off those who would pirate the game and would need to run install/uninstall trials. Screw you Bethesda!
2) Assassin's Creed conflicting with my virtual drive. Fallout 3 conflicting with my virtual drive. I'm sick of disabling it every time I want to play. Everyone uses NoCD cracks anyway, what's the point of getting groggy over virtual drives.
3) Assassin's Creed installed SecuRom into my kernel. Cannot be removed.
4) Bioshock has installed SecuRom into my kernel. Cannot be removed.
5) Couldn't place the songs from my iPhone to my computer after reformatting the computer. Had to go through a third party program.
6) Got a nasty call from LucasArts telling me that if I try to pirate Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis they would come to my house and rape my family. Is it my fault they still hold ESRB rights to this game and don't sell it?

Open Question: Weird LEGO Indiana Jones start up?
Whenever I try to play LEGO Indiana Jones on my computer, it will load all the way up to where i need to select a controller type. As that screen is loading (when the little LEGO plane starts to fly in), The game will immediately crash. Instantly cutting off. there is no error message, or anything that would suggest why it does that. I'm pretty sure I got all of the game requirements on my computer. So, anyone got any ideas on why it won't work?

Resolved Question: Recommendation - The definitive WWII/Nazi Thriller?
I've seen a few WWII / Nazi thrillers but I'm looking for that a single film with the following criteria -
a) A story set in the backdrop of WWII
b) The story must be set in Europe primarily (not the US or Japan or Russia)
c) SS officers
d) A spy story
e) Great cinematography
f) Less ideology and more thrills, suspense
g) A race against time
h) Its shouldn't be a narrative of a battle (eg. D-Day, Pearl Harbor). Just an all out action/spy thriller.
It shouldn't be one of the following (or similar) -
Valkyrie, Enemy at the Gates, Stalingrad, Eye of the Needle, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Saving Private Ryan, Escape to Athena, Force 10 movies, Enigma and a couple others.
I'd really appreciate your recommendations. Thanks, guys!
