West Side Story
West Side Story Leonard Bernstein's musical update of Romeo and Juliet, with a young Stephen Sondheim's brilliant lyrics, had already galvanized Broadway with its vivid reinvention as a parable of racial intolerance and generational conflict. But director Robert Wise's lavish widescreen presentation broke fresh ground by taking the story to its most impressionable audience, the teenagers who could identify directly with Tony and Maria, and opened up Jerome Robbins's kinetic choreography through bravura camera work. The original soundtrack album was not merely a huge seller but a unique touchstone for an otherwise rock-oriented audience, and its release on CD benefits from an expanded program untenable in its initial LP release, as well as a 20-bit digital transfer. With Richard Beymer, Marni Nixon (Hollywood's vocal doppelgänger of choice, here standing in for Natalie Wood), and Rita Moreno dominating, the show's bounty of terrific songs and exciting instrumental pieces remains an ear-filling treat, mixing operatic passions, tart social commentary, and high comedy. From "Tonight" to "One Hand, One Heart," "America" to "Jet Song," this is a landmark in American musical theatre and film beautifully realized on disc. --Sam Sutherland

Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory
Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory Having proven itself as a favorite film of children around the world, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is every bit as entertaining now as it was when originally released in 1971. There's a timeless appeal to Roald Dahl's classic children's novel, which was playfully preserved in this charming musical, from the colorful carnival-like splendor of its production design to the infectious melody of the "Oompah-Loompah" songs that punctuate the story. Who can forget those diminutive Oompah-Loompah workers who recite rhyming parental warnings ("Oompah-Loompah, doopity do...") whenever some mischievous child has disobeyed Willy Wonka's orders to remain orderly? Oh, but we're getting ahead of ourselves ... it's really the story of the impoverished Charlie Bucket, who, along with four other kids and their parental guests, wins a coveted golden ticket to enter the fantastic realm of Wonka's mysterious confectionery. After the other kids have proven themselves to be irresponsible brats, it's Charlie who impresses Wonka and wins a reward beyond his wildest dreams. But before that, the tour of Wonka's factory provides a dazzling parade of delights, and with Gene Wilder giving a brilliant performance as the eccentric candyman, Wonka gains an edge of menace and madness that nicely counterbalances the movie's sentimental sweetness. It's that willingness to risk a darker tone--to show that even a wonderland like Wonka's can be a weird and dangerous place if you're a bad kid--that makes this an enduring family classic. --Jeff Shannon

Soylent Green
Soylent Green Charlton Heston seemed fond of starring in apocalyptic science-fiction films in the late 1960s and early '70s. There was Planet of the Apes, of course, and The Omega Man. But there was also 1973's Soylent Green, a strange detective film (based on Harry Harrison's Make Room! Make Room!) set in 2022 and starring Heston as a Manhattan cop trying to solve a murder in the overpopulated, overheated city. His roommate (a necessity in the overcrowded metropolis), played by Edward G. Robinson, tries telling him about a better time on Earth before there were no more resources or room left; but Heston doesn't care. Directed by Richard Fleischer (The Vikings), the film has a curious but largely successful mix of mystery and bleak futuristic vision, somewhat like Blade Runner but without the extraordinary art direction. This was Robinson's last film and he's easily the best thing about it; his final scene seems terribly appropriate in retrospect. Joseph Cotten makes an appearance as the man whose murder results in the revelation of a shocking secret. --Tom Keogh

WarGames
WarGames Cute but silly, this 1983 cautionary fantasy stars Matthew Broderick as a teenage computer genius who hacks into the Pentagon's defense system and sets World War III into motion. All the fun is in the film's set-up, as Broderick befriends Ally Sheedy and starts the international crisis by pretending while online to be the Soviet Union. After that, it's not hard to predict what's going to happen: government agents swoop in, but the story ends up in the "hands" of machines talking to one another. Thus we're stuck with flashing lights, etc. John Badham (Saturday Night Fever) directs in strict potboiler mode. Kids still like this movie, though. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, theatrical trailer, Dolby sound, director commentary, optional English, French and Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

Open Question: How to get a medical discharge?
HI, my husband is currently in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. He's completed BT, and is about to begin AIT in 2 wks. Although, he's been on profile since the 2nd weeks of Basic. It began when he got cellulitis, then stress fractures in his feet, then stress fractures in his knees. The cellulitis eventually healed, but the stress fractures didn't. After graduating BT, they sent him home on a 30 day con leave. He's returned back now and was supposed to begin PT, but the doctor said he's not yet healed enough to begin PT, so he'll be put on a 15 day profile...AGAIN! This has been going on since September 15th, and he's at the point now....he wants to get healed or leave. No one is seeming to help him out. He's stuck between a rock and a hard place. He feels now with his knees getting worse, and still not being able to participate in anything that it's best if he were to leave the military. This whole siuation had brought his spirits down and caused lots of stress. I feel awful that he's stuck in MO with out any idea of what to do. Is there a specific person he can speak with who WILL BE OF HELP! Any suggestions? (more...)

Resolved Question: How difficult is Basic Training and AIT at Fort Leonard Wood in Waynesville Missouri for MP?
I will be joining the Army National Guard within the next two weeks most likely as an MP. My understanding is that Fort Leonard Wood in Waynesville Missouri is where BCT and AIT will be held. I am wondering how difficult the physical part of the training will be. I am 39 years old, 5'6", and was weighing about 232 pounds (now 205 - I have been dieting and working hard to lose the weight and get back into shape) I would appreciate constructive comments from those who have actual knowledge of the training. Resolved Question: How much time did you or someone you know get between basic and AIT?

Jackson South Carolina and the time he will have to get on a plane for Ft. Leonard Wood Missouri for his AIT. Anyone know? I hope it's more than 24 hrs. (more...)
